This video was perfect. Thank you. I learned so much in this quick vid and i have been shooting on canon for 10 years... never messed with log but need to for the next couple of jobs. Thank you again.
Thanks Josh! Super helpful for a guy like me who jumped from a Canon M50 to a R5C. Jumping cameras was easy in the photo settings, but the video is another story. I appreciate your help.
I really really appreciate your videos. I totally messed up the exposure on an unboxing video. Ended up losing detail in the shadows. Overall it was usable but it made me a little sad. I came back and watch your video a few more times. Sometimes it really takes training yourself a few times over. That's why your videos are so helpful. Short into the point with great information
I find the dynamic range being so good I can expose by looking on the camera monitor with view assist. If it looks good I can do final adjustments in post. Also I like prioritising skin tones before blown highlights. Great content - keep them coming.
Thanks for the video. To keep shadows clean using clog 3 on the R5C, I find it's possible to overexpose into the super whites. It may look a little over exposed on the LCD display but if the highlights don't flatten a few percentage points past 100 IRE on the waveform monitor it indicates there's still information there. Works particularly well with raw as you can lower the ISO in post and get back to correct exposure with shadow detail looking a lot cleaner and highlights still in tact. Using a color managed workflow in Resolve also helps as it provides a larger color space to grade in prior to outputting to rec 709.
Excellent tutorial Josh! I'm just starting to play with these tools myself, so your video was very timely! My current cameras don't have the tools, but my external monitor does ;) Thanks for making it so clear and easy to understand for those new to log footage workflows and best practices. You nailed it and Thank you! 👊
Very helpful video Josh! I recently got the canon R5C and am new to the cinema line of cameras. I would very much enjoy a detailed video on how to apply LUTs to video in Final Cut Pro. Thanks, Tony
Thanks! Glad you found the video helpful. To apply LUTs in Final Cut, search for "Custom LUT" in the Installed Effects and drag it onto a clip. You can then select the LUT you would like to apply.
Thank you, my dear friend. You provided a clear and understandable explanation, which is highly valuable. Your video turned out to be extremely helpful. I intend to subscribe to your channel and give it a thumbs up. You are a friendly and experienced specialist.
Cool. I definitely would like to make some content about this. I personally don't find either easier or more difficult to work with. Clog 2 is usually better since that usually comes with more dynamic range, but the R5C has a lot of dynamic range to work with in Clog 3.
I basically only use the Ninja V as a monitor or for screen recording to make TH-cam videos/tutorials. For normal stuff, I record internally in the camera.
Loved the video! Dumb question, but why did you use a gray card to set your white balance? I didn’t realize that also worked. I thought you had to use a white card.
Do you have any videos on shutter angle? I understand what the 180 means but coming from photography I’m not sure if I need to make any adjustments if I want a more frantic look to my scene. For instance shooting 30fps in 120. It makes it look jittery which is what I want for some of my films.
I don't have a video about it, but it's pretty straight forward. Shoot at the base ISO of whatever log profile you are in. Shutter speed is double the frame rate. 24p ->1/50, 30p -> 1/60, 60p-> 1/125, etc. Get your proper exposure using the aperture and a variable ND filter (if it's bright outside or if you want a very low aperture).
@@Josh_Sattin doesn't shutter angle mean that whatever frame rate you are on it will just automatically double it in camera? as opposed to shutter speed where you would have to double it yourself? I'm new to this too
Just bought the R5C yesterday after skating by shooting for clients with the R6. I am very excited the relegate the R6 to a B cam. The R6 is in unbelievable tool, but when clients are involved and you need to constantly keep the camera on and running, it just doesn't hold up.
See that you have it at base 800 ISO, when I used it before the image looked like crap compared to 160 ISO, but here it looks great. Maybe because I was filming inside... IDK. TY.
Let me clarify the question. In this video, @ 2:10, the flip-out screen on your Canon R5C displays white lettering on a black background in Video mode, similar to the Photo mode; how did you set this up? I have the R5C but my flip out screen is displaying a hazy, light gray background with the white lettering in Video mode. Thank you for your rapid response!! Signed, subscribed!
Hello @josh sattin, I have a question I think you didn't cover... I use the R5C without ant external display. Is there a way to have a 'lut' or to 'color' when we shoot in CLOG 3 and we need the image to be properly exposed? Thanks a lot
NOTE: I found if you do white balance with a ND filter on it doesn't work, colours turn out awful. Well on my R3. You need to remove for it to work. I just expose to the zebras at 65% (in conjunction with my hystergram). I know this is slightly high. But i find if i set it lower the subject is a little dark for my liking, causing me to add brightness in post which effects the image. I use Lumafusion so haven't got the tools of other editors for colour grading. Hope that helps some users. 👍
False Color vs Zebras - Do you use them differently or just have a preference? For doing talking head stuff like this I find myself using Zebras (set for 35% for exposure and 95% for clipping) so I can monitor when I am in place with a big external monitor but not look like I have predator vision.
Hey I was wondering now that you got your hands on the camera again if you know any way to change the color space when using C log 3 on the R5C? I know with the R5 you can change the color space in the CLOG settings from wide color gamut to BT 2020.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you so much lol. I ended up figuring it out and recorded one video. Still have some comparisons and testing to do with ninja V + before I use it more. HDMI raw in ProRes light has been my favorite choice so far.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks for clarifying. do you reccomend specifically this VND or would a cheaper one be comparable? I need to purchase a lot of equipment to complete my r5c rig and have to decide where to be cost effective and where to settle for more expensive higher quality gear. I think I am going to cave and buy the very overpriced 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which makes me want to stay on the cheaper side for VND, mics, monitor, batter source, etc., but do you think it is important to get a more expensive/higher quality VND to not compromise the quality of the very expensive lens and camera body?
If you have an external HDMI recorder / monitor, does it also capture the false color and other tools (menus, settings, etc) or does it somehow know what is the pure video from the image and what is not? i.e. How do you tell the external recorder what parts of the HDMI feed you want to record and which parts you do not want to record? Or... perhaps, before you start recording, you must turn off all of the extra info.
Hmmm... Is it clipping in camera on the histogram or in your editor? Are you shooting in Clog3? Also check your exposure with your false color to make sure you are not clipping highlights.
@@Josh_SattinI was looking at the waveform monitor on my R5C at 2 times magnification as it does not have a histogram in the video operating system. I am shooting in Clog3 like you using cinema gamut. I have not used false colour but I will. Your video clearly shows the waveform stretching up to and above 100 whereas mine bunches up and won’t go above 80. I have tried with and without zebras turned on. It is a bit baffling. Any other suggestions?
Oh sorry, yeah I meant waveform. I get questions about so many different cameras. I just played with a bunch of settings in my R5C and couldn't get it to limit to 80 so I'm not sure what's going on. I would make sure you are on the newest firmware. Also go into your Clog3 settings and reset it to Clog3 to make sure you are using the default settings for Clog3.
Are you planning to do photography review for R5C? Interested to know how or if absence of IBIS affects photos in different situations? Is lens based stabilization sufficient? Can I treat it just like R5 in absence of IBIS?
Unfortunately I focus on video stuff on this channel because I personally don't do much photography. As far as I know, the R5C in photo mode is identical to the R5 without IBIS.
Regarding the effects of no IBIS on stills, it's a math problem that only you can answer for how you intend to shoot. It should go without saying that if shooting handheld in low light, you're going to sacrifice IQ (by cranking ISO) to maintain a sharp image @ 45MP assuming aperture already wide open. The Lens OIS helps, but, compared to an R5, you're giving up several stops by not having IBIS. Frankly, I think Canon got it right by not putting IBIS on the R5C. IBIS is designed/intended for stills photography to deal with jittery hands, etc., but its effects are seen when shooting video w/ sweeping motions and it makes the video look very amateurish IMHO -- this holds true for all systems (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.), but esp. w/ Canon w/ it's wobble problem when shooting at wide angles.
Can you also compare R5C and R3 dynamic range in a future video? In Gerald Undone's Imatest score that he showed in his R3 review it shows that the R5 has actually higher dynamic range in video. Could you ever get the chance in the future to compare both in this regard? Thank you!
I have founding the right exposure from the R6 in Clog 3 is around+2/3 to +2 depending on what you are filming, like real estate usually between +1, +2....this for the color space transform on Davinci using Rec 709. Any tip on how to work with gray card or color checker on the R6, as we don't have false color? Thank you
What memory card are you using? I see at one point you had 400 minutes recording time! That’s insane - my R5C is currently saying but rate to high for SD card so assuming I need an upgrade? I got a CF card but still not good enough for my but rate 😢
800 is the base ISO for Clog 3. It will give the best balance of DR in terms of highlights and shadows. If you lower the ISO below the base you are shifting stops of DR to the shadows: th-cam.com/video/AWzqLE64TzI/w-d-xo.html
Just upgraded to R5C from the 1DX3. When I shoot CLOG it looks like regular c-log on camera playback, however when I import the footage (I use both FCPX & premiere) it’s not in CLOG anymore and I can’t figure out why. Any suggestions ?
Sometimes Final Cut will automatically apply a LUT. Check the Info Inspector on the right side of the window. I'm not sure about Premier, I don't use it.
I think that waveform monitor goes to 110%, not just 100. So you shouldn't see the red clipping bits until you hit 110. You have a bit more wiggle room than you think. Not sur ehow usable the highlights in the 100 to 110 range are (probably the yellow parts on the false color).
There is quite a bit of latitude in the highlights but I found if I exposed slightly less than when red showed up in the false color, the highlights would be clipped when I brought it to edit. I lower it just a bit more than that. If you are interested in the dynamic range of the R5C, I made a video about it: th-cam.com/video/USqWeohuB14/w-d-xo.html
Hi youtube.com/@Josh_Sattin , what is it , how do you change those controls "aperture - F2.8" or "ND filter to adjust exposure " and so on , ? Are turning up or down the lens controls ? OR settings from menu ? or from ... where?
It’s good to have a white balance button. The process on the EOS R for setting custom white balance in video is absurdly dumb (go to photo, monkey around forever, then go back to video where you just lost your settings from switching to photo, etc).
Ok but how in the hell do you do this without a ND filter, I am trying to shoot outdoors in the sun and at ISO 100 and F22 my shots are completely overexposed, there must be a way to bring this down in the cameras settings it cant only be possible with an ND filter surely?
I mean…. assuming you’re serious, you could raise your shutter speed/decrease shutter angle and that will also help to darken your exposure. But if you’re shooting way below the base ISO, stopped all the way down, and with a super high shutter speed, your footage will look bad. There’s no way around that. It will be choppy, with a super deep DOF, and decreased dynamic range. If you’re shooting video, you really should be using NDs. They are essential essential essential for video work
Sorry, but this is not quite right exposing in CLOG 3. You need to consider that Clog 3 is compressing highlights and shadows, and once converted to REC 709 it will decompress and hit the clipping point. This happened to me ones and I had to color grade everything manually. Yes if you are normalizing color manually, it might work but it is not correct. It needs to be converted into REC 709 first. Normalizing color is not just manually pulling contrast and saturation. The bottom line, when exposing in Clog you need to leave space for rec709 conversion.
If you are exposing as high as possible without clipping then you might need to adjust the exposure in post before applying the REC 709 conversion. Depending on your software either use nodes or put the adjustments in the correct order. exposure adjustments -> REC 709 conversion -> extra grading

It's been a while since I shot this video, but I believe I was using this card with Long GOP

What's the battery life with the battery grip?
About two hours in 4K 24. I go over battery solutions and rigging in this video: th-cam.com/video/uDfJopMFXhg/w-d-xo.html
Any reason you're using ISO 800? I've found that a lower ISO doesn't affect the Dynamic Range.
800 is the base ISO for Clog 3. It will give the best balance of DR in terms of highlights and shadows. If you lower the ISO below the base you are shifting stops of DR to the shadows: th-cam.com/video/AWzqLE64TzI/w-d-xo.html
@@Josh_Sattin I don’t think it impacts the R5C in the way I’ve seen it impact using CLOG 3 on my R5.m at lower ISO values
color grading video would be great.

La cámara es 10 Bits? Porque veo que utilizas Log3, y tal cual en Sony Log 3 no sirve para cámaras de 8 Bits.
7:44 what are you exactly raising here ? Aperture or ISO ?
I am adjusting the intensity of my key light.
@@Josh_Sattin Thank you 😊
Isnt it easier and faster to just set zebras for skin tones?
I don't use skin tones to base exposure since human skin is all different colors.
@@Josh_Sattin well not on my country 😅
Just upgraded to R5C from the 1DX3. When I shoot CLOG it looks like regular c-log on camera playback, however when I import the footage (I use both FCPX & premiere) it’s not in CLOG anymore and I can’t figure out why. Any suggestions ?
Sometimes Final Cut will automatically apply a LUT. Check the Info Inspector on the right side of the window. I'm not sure about Premier, I don't use it.
What kind of nd filter are you using?

There are links to all of my gear in the video description.
@@Josh_Sattin you're awesome! Thank you.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Quick question! Have you tested how long the battery grip lasts in a single long take? I do long-form stuff and 1.5 hours is my magic number lol
I haven't yet, but I will be doing those tests to include in the rig video coming soon.
He has the grip on in the video and assuming full battery the camera says 117 mins. I would expect less than that when filming however.
@@Josh_Sattin nice! I got the dummy battery for r5, which is fine, but it would be soooooo nice not to have to use it
I think that waveform monitor goes to 110%, not just 100.
How do you record camera screen?
I use the Atomos Ninja V to record the screen.
Hi youtube.com/@Josh_Sattin , what is it , how do you change those controls "aperture - F2.8" or "ND filter to adjust exposure " and so on , ? Are turning up or down the lens controls ? OR settings from menu ? or from ... where?
How do you turn on the level?
Menu -> Monitoring Setup -> 5 -> Custom Display 1 -> Level
It’s good to have a white balance button. The process on the EOS R for setting custom white balance in video is absurdly dumb (go to photo, monkey around forever, then go back to video where you just lost your settings from switching to photo, etc).
100%! Having a legit custom white balance in there is awesome. Wish it was in their non cinema camera menus.
Wait im confused on why your iso is at 800?
That's the base ISO in Clog3.
@@Josh_Sattin Not on my r5c and clog 3??
turn on fake colors, press auto aperture, adjust 1 to 2 stops every now and then
How about show some 8k raw show what it can do

They are essential essential essential for video work
Hey, Josh? Did you send me a response saying that I won something from you and to message you in a telegram or were you hacked?
No. That is a spam bot. This unfortunately is common in TH-cam comments nowadays.
I couldn’t see the ND level info showing on the screen… my imagination?
The Canon R5C doesn't have a built in ND filter. I am using a screw on variable ND filter on the front of the lens.
Duh. My question made no sense.
