Yep, got the R3. The only issue i have is the red/magenta shift in the skin tones, not a fan. I can actually see it in your video. I don't like rigging out the cameras as you have mentioned it limits the camera uses, increases more complications to give trouble. I tossed up so much between the C70 and R3, but in the end i do feel the R3 is a better fit for me. The C70, from the RF and 35mm sensor to the poor build quality put me off as i have mostly RF lenses and there is not many short focal length options, i didn't want to use the speed booster. Then there is the AF as i am a one man shooter.
But at the end of the day, very happy with the R3. Would buy another.

@@chiokehart-kelly3481 Sorry for the long delay. I can confirm that with a full original Canon battery when you start up the camera it estimates you 62 minutes of run time when ready to shoot and if you change to the media the estimate changes to 167 minutes so at least the camera itself seems to expect it to last way longer when the media window is open. I didnt bother to wait for it to run out and clock it tho so theoretically it can just also be a glitch too.

Many people complain about the sharpness of the R5C and lack of log 2 but both problems can be solved by a 1/8 promist to soften and shooting/setting RAW to CLOG2 in post. In resolve you can set the sharpness to 0 also as by default it is set to 10

I talked with a local Canon rep few weeks back about this and he said that R5 and R5C are not the same, and its intentional as the cinema line users do not usually want the snappy, unnatural focus transition which you have with a photo camera. As long as their data from customers keep on telling them its not a wanted video feature they wont be adding it to the cinema line. Thats the impression I was left with.

I have been mainly a stills shooter. But lately I'm being asked by clients to do more video assignments. After researching and waiting for the right camera literally for years (current camera is a 5D mkiii), I bought the R5C and everything you recommended but the Matt Box. Because I have EF Mount lenses I chose the canon ND filter. The Meinke was sold out. I use a separate Recorder H4N for Audio and wireless lavs. I've done 3 video jobs in the last week. Other than a small learning curve, the jobs went smoothly. Files ran like butter on my iMac pro. I'm about to do my 1st photoshoot with the R5C camera body this evening. I rented an R5 recently and loved it. So I don't think there will be any issues. I really need a second camera body. Switching back-and-forth from a cinema rig to a stills rig is a pain. Damien great stuff! (I own the R5c and r3 for video). Gerald undone gave out this tip- up the auto focus sensitivity on the R5c to +3, helps for sure!
The r3 with the ibis and bigger body is for me the king of handheld footage for canon shooters- I can’t recommend the r3 enough.. I use it all the time. The R5c codecs are butter 🧈 only problem is the battery life.
If the R1 is an R3 body(ish)with cinema capabilities like the R5c with IBIS on/off option plus the improved battery life-plus some ND built in. That would be game, set, match- perfect cam for me!
I think it’s in the works a mixing of the cinema OS and photo OS that would bring everything full circle. Both OS’s need improvement from there current layout and options.
And for the record I have shot a few projects on the R5C in wide DR- it’s getting to the point where log isn’t needed for everything. Wide DR has a lot of latitude. Fast and easy to edit-try it out!
Love your channel Damien- I can’t say enough thanks for all the tips, tricks and workflow ideas I have gained from you the past few years! You have become the go to channel for Canon shooters!🍻cheers my man!

    • @HenryOrtlip

Just for the record the ibis on the r3 works much better than the normal r5, the shape of the r3 is balanced it has more weight which allows for really steady handheld work. I would not shoot handheld when I had the R5 too many wobbles, the R3 is different, it’s a fantastic video camera. The c70 with it’s huge size and cropped sensor just for built in ND has never made sense to me- but we all have different needs and workflows. 😝🥳

@@thecalebpringle hey Caleb! I go back and forth on this. The R5C has an amazing image, codecs and all the video features are fantastic.
I’ll give you an example. Yesterday I was at large hospital chain here in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m documenting there service dogs 🐕‍🦺 that work in the hospital. I shot the interviews on the R5C connected to PD USB. Then I put the R5c on the gimbal and was following the handler and dog around the hospital for a bit. At a point I switched to the R3 handheld. I’m in a hospital room with a real patient watching the dog and patient interact. The R3 with the IBIS is clutch, good low light performance- And the auto focus is touch accurate and the animal tracking is kicking in. Then I can get low to the ground and get the patients hand petting the dog just a few inches above the ground. The R5C would have fallen short in this situation. Though I have big clients, I’m often in situations I need to have as little presence as possible- not the big rigs that fill the thumbnails of youtube. mobility and speed are everything.
The R5C cinema OS is nice, but for 10 years I have learned to be a professional with canon photo OS and can work fast an efficient with it, though it has its short comings.
I took only the R3 to Mexico City two weeks ago and didn’t miss the R5C for one moment on that project. (I was documenting a pro soccer team, and filming matches)
I recently invested in the great joy RF 50mm, so I’m going to be shooting more anamorphic projects in the future. Which the R5C is the only true option for anamorphic.
Long response, I know- it depends on your needs. But if you do get the R3 only get the canon batteries for it! Watson and other brands will force the camera to overheat when shooting at 60fps for long takes -its not know on the internet, but I have experienced it filming the soccer matches at 60fps. The canon batteries though the R3 runs forever.

so i have a very specific use-case... we have a c300mkiii as an a camera, and needed a camera that is light and has good AF for gimbal work with matching color science to the c300. we *sometimes* shoot photos - cool, the r5 can do that... but the kicker - we quite often shoot in full daylight in Florida and the regular r5 can't keep up for obvious reasons. yes, the lack of internal NDs sucks, and so does the battery life. but i don't really have a problem using vnds and when the camera isn't on a gimbal it's a b-cam in an interview setup and we can either use a usb pd battery bank with the smallrig battery bank hot-shoe holder OR an lp-e6 dummy to dtap with one of our spare c300 core swx batteries that have dtap (also held via the smallrig battery bank hot-shoe holder).
the biggest point of contention for me is that the lp-e6 battery needlessly drains when it is in video mode in complete IDLE. the battery shouldn't drain as quickly as it does when recording when in idle. super stupid. and hopefully a firmware fix helps.
i will say it is a bit annoying... canon keeps coming out with these cameras that are ALMOST perfect and then drops the ball with a stupid thing like power... just give me a different battery option - i don't care if all my lp-e6s are useless and i have to invest in new batteries... I also don't understand how the fx3 gets like 3x battery life using a similar mAh battery leading me to believe with some optimizations to the cineos - this issue could be somewhat resolved.

I have a Kinefinity mavo 6k as my main film camera and just purchased the R5C to replace my 5D4, occasionally I’ll do photo events and capture some video as well so this should be perfect for that, also as a B camera for live events, multi cam interview as with clog it should match much easier to the mavo, surprising the 5d did very good with tripod stuff, I never fell in love with it for handheld so I hope this does better as I don’t plan on rigging it up, that’s what the mavo is for personally

you'd only regret it IF when shooting video you aren't prepared to get some sort of external battery solution. i'd also suggest an external monitor, not because of the screen quality, but size.. it isn't really super good in bright scenarios, or when you need to get critical focus or check AF.

I was just hoping maybe Sony would unlock full frame 60P in 4K on the A7IV after this camera was released. Having shot on the original BMPCC, the battery life on the R5C is way more tolerable than I thought it would be. Haha. To me, battery life is a non-issue. If I need more power, I will just add a larger battery on the rails; still lighter than our FS7 rigs at work.

  • @Mintyseden
    @Mintyseden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The canon rep is 100% wrong. All EOS C line cameras downsamples, EVEN WHEN NOT RECORDING.. R5C downsamples from 8k in most modes, and that takes a toll on the tiny battery.
This could easily be fixed by using the same mode as the photo mode of the camera, when in standby. Doing this will ease your range anxiety a lot.
Pro tip every R5C owners. Hit the “media” button, this will instantly stop the down sampling, and pause the drainage, and you are only using as much as the “photo mode”
    You’re welcome.

Nah! I 100% would go for r5c instead of C70... Why just take away your photo ability, on a photo capable sensor!! The whole system utilizes whats given much better. Internal NDs are nice of course. There is way too many and easy workarounds...
I think the main point is good image quality. The rest kinda can be worked around. And if you look at whats been out there for the last 10 years, there realy isnt that much anything else. You can get a superb image quality on a 5dmk3 with Magic Lantern. Wich costs 400euros right now!!! And if we would compare image quality, i guess r5c is better. Actualy i would like to see some more comparrisons... But there realy isnt much in the middle! What camera has a better image that 5dmk3 with ML from past 10 years ??? Unless its a cinema camera!!!
I personaly like the image of the old movie cameras like Red one. Old reds going for 2k right now. So thats actualy affordable, that body is quite big. That image i 100 percent prefer. BUT! you cant just grab a RED one and go out shoot an event. its a different kind of camera. For staged work. For film. Sure, its probably worth dealing with it. I am 100 percent sure that just the smallness of r5c would help alot in filming a music video with small team... At least thats my thoughts, that the body size, new technology, and image quality is at a VERY high point in that thing!!! By taking many things into account its at a good mid point... I hope that battery life thing is kinda fixed though!

OK... I think that you said it in verdict... if you want to shoot video, buy video camera... This camera is no where near the professional needs of a camera operator. It is a hybrid camera, for wannabe filmmakers that want to avoid paying for a real camera.
Having said that... I would love to get one. At my work I have professional camera, if a need arises I could always rent something even better than what I have at work. Now, as someone who likes photography and occasionally needs to own something that shoots pro/semi pro video this camera is perfect. Same goes for occasional pro photo shoot.
If you work, and need to own pro video camera, skip even c70 and go right to c300... or fx6/fx9... or venice if that is your need. If your needs are eng/occasional docu... don't even concider those above, buy z280 or z750. If you work solely as a photographer, there are other better options, Nikon immediately comes to mind, for example.
If you do a bit of this and a bit of that ... buy something like r5c and it won't sit idle at the bookshelf.
    That's my 5 cents.
