💭 Some ppl have super-soulful eyes that really communicate other realms; Mother Maybelle had these beautiful eyes. ( Oh, & then there was her amazing guitar playing 😉)
This woman was a freaking legend. I love may belle carter. She is amazing, her whole family is talented as shit, but she is the nucleus that leads it all.
Lots of people play like her, but unoriginally- the Carter scrstch is by no means technically complicated even up against the old time musical catalougue- it's the fact that everyone who plays like her now is imitating HER. She did it independently, originally, and first. and that's what makes it and her so so special
Artificial eyelashes were very fashionable at that time. Dolly Parton wrote a song about their necessity to a woman performing on stage. Look up "False Eyelashes"
@@colinhaines9369 I'm filled with so much joy when I see someone keeping the memory of the original sound of country music alive thank you from the bottom of my heart
Betty here....the harp is an Oscar Schmidt 'Guitaro' which was manufactured from mid 1960's through the early 1970's. It was introduced during the folk music revival and has 24 strings vs. 36 on the Autoharp. How do I know this???? I have both Guitaro and Autoharp!
I don't believe I've ever seen anything so extraordinary on You Tube. Imagine salvaging this incredible video, this performance. Extraordinary is an understatement. Thank you for posting this!
Here locally we have a historical ranch complex that has several historic buildings on it that you can go and tour. They have a Guitaro just like the one Sara plays here.
I still have the VHS of this in storage, one of very few I kept. So glad this song got isolated. Maybelle may be my favorite player ever, she makes me smile and tap my feet.
dblair1258 of course, glad you enjoyed it! I always loved this version so when the video was take down I had to put it up again, because I know many people enjoy this recording.
Their first studio recording of this song is actually one of the few songs A.P. Carter led with The Original Carter Family. It's probably his best. Check it out if you haven't heard it.

They were pals but for many years wouldn't see each other much. Must have been a great event for them both when they met up and I suppose Maybelle would always want them to play and sing. A lot of sadness in the Carters' lives really.
Damn, thanks for saving and posting this! (Also, I suspect Woody Guthrie used this tune as the basis for his "All You Fascists Gonna Lose." It's not exactly the same tune, but similar.)
You could very well be right on that! Woody was a huge fan of the Carters and so many times took their songs, added new words and wrote an entire new song. This Land is Your Land is the best example of that
@@colinhaines9369 Yeah, absolutely. We recently played a mashup of "I can't feel at home" (Carter Family) into "I ain't got no home" (Woody) that was a lot of fun, but I didn't catch onto this derivation 'til tonight.
There is a photo of Helen, Sara and Maybelle Carter that is seen on the label of this video, but that photo is not on the video. Is there a way I can view that photo?
Update to my comment. Sara wasn't raised by Maybelle's family. She and her older sister lived with her mother's sister Melinda Nickels and her husband Milburn. The story that A.P. heard her singing in her Aunts parlor led me to believe it was the Addingtons who were a very musical family. Some sites say she was an orphan. I don't think that's true far as I know her father was alive. She had 4 siblings. Sara was 11 years older than Maybelle. Although they were cousins I think their musical connection was Ezra Carter, A.P.'s brother. Sara & A.P. Sang as a duo for several years. Maybelle formally joined after she married Ezra.
My father was a hard working farmer but he did not work on Sunday. He would lay on the couch and listen to this music. It was his form of Church.

This just popped up on my TH-cam home page. And i clicked it. And i surely enjoyed it!
Nobody's ever played guitar like Mother Maybelle...there've been plenty who've tried.

Maybelle has the most beautiful eyes I ever seen♥️
With massive stick-on eyelashes 👁 ? Or was that for real...
Artificial eyelashes were very fashionable at that time.

True
Unbelievable I got goosebumps and was overwhelmed so unbelievable
Thank you
In the presence of greatness
Thank you
❤
I see a little smile in Sara’s face at the very end. 😍
Joi Jackson Perle A very rare sight to see! :)
She smiled very rarely, but when she did it could light up a whole room!
Nice music 🤓

I just realized that the strumming and picking pattern that Sara and Maybelle are using sounds like the sounds trains make as they go over the rails.
Oui.... Et un petit peu plus tard, je trouve que Johnny Cash avait ce même son dans ses compositions ....❤️❤️❤️
Oui, c’est vrai!
Incredible.
Another timeless gem💎
Oh to step into this video and listen to them sing live❤

Love it and love that Sara is doing that kinda-sorta smile at the end. She had a hard life so it was a rare sight. But good to see nonetheless.

love watching both do that scratch picking copied my picking style off them 60 years ago
No wonder Johnny cash was such a huge fan boy
Why does she play with the capo so high up on the fretboard.????
Maybelle typically favored playing in C position and just capo'ing to whatever key she needed to be in.
she does it to match Sara's singing
Areal they sisters?
Marianne Bøtker They we’re first cousins who married brothers, so they became sister-in-laws!
Sara lived with Maybelle's family. Her mother died when she was 3.

A.P. should have been singing that instead of Sara...
