    AMD Fluid Motion Frames generates interpolated frames at the driver level in any DX11 or DX12 game. Previously the preview driver (this tech is not fully released) was available only for the RX 7000 series GPUs, but AMD has just provided support for their RX 6000 series GPUs. So far I've been trying to find a game where I feel like AFMF has been an overall improvement to my experience since it has a lot more drawbacks than a native FSR3 implementation. Comments on my videos have suggested trying out racing games and/or CPU limited games. So in this video we test out AFMF on the RX 6800 XT in the new Forza Motorsport on an older CPU (i5-9600K) which becomes CPU limited in this game before it can reach 120FPS. Let's see if the tech is working on the RX 6800 XT, and if so, is it improving my experience?

    I just installed it a couple hours ago, this technology is absolutely incredible and it feels like magic. I was seriously considering upgrading to a 7800 XT from a 6750 XT (only a 40% performance increase according to TechPowerUp) just for the new RDNA 3 features but I'm shocked that AMD pretty much just gave it to us for free.

    One of the games that I've found to work really well with AFMF is Mortal Kombat 11 with motion blur left on. It looks a lot smoother and because you don't move around the camera often, it doesn't drop the generated frames. It might be worth taking a look at other fighting games that are locked at 60fps too

      So the game is engine locked at 60, but still works with fluid motion frames? That sounds awesome.
      I wonder if it also works well with games like Fallout 4 and Dark Souls? They notoriously have problems when unlocking the frame rate.

      @@WickedRibbon Yeah basically it works similar to converting 30fps videos to 60fps. It doesn't actually run faster but it looks like its at double the framerate with animations and all, moving the mouse quickly feels the same though.
      And for those I don't know. For most third/1st person games it works best when the base framerates at above half the hz (so 72fps for 144hz). I don't own Dark Souls but I do have Fallout 4 so I'll have to try it out (and I'll let you know how it goes since you've got me curious too).

    • @blankusername5914
      @blankusername5914 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@WickedRibbonSo I just tried to get it running with Fallout 4 and I'm giving up on it lol. Part of how the fluid frames runs is with fullscreen on but having fullscreen ingame in Fallout 4 unlocks the framerate. It goes to 60 when its in windowed borderless but the fluid motion frames doesn't work with that game display type on Fallout 4. Trying to tweak the ini files didn't lock the framerate either. Turning on radeon chill turns of fluid frames too. I think you might be able to get it working with a mod like ENB to set the framerate but I'm not sure. Sorry if it was disappointing but yeah.
      On the flip side though most other Bethesda games run well with it. Using mods to fix the framerate on Skyrim and using a heavy enb with it runs pretty well. And for starfield it runs decently, though you'll want a decent base framerate to see the best results.

    Just played GTA V at 1440p very high settings 4x MSAA and got 220 fps on a RX 6750XT with very little latency and micro stutter. It was mind blowing how well it worked. However, Plagues Tale Requiem was a bit of a mess with latency and micro stutter but thats with over double the fps. I improved it fiddling around but it feels more like the beta it is in that game. I am sure they will have it polished up nicely when the full version releases, no more hit or miss with different games. Its amazing how it works on every game. Did a test run in Yakuza 2 Kiwami with my 6800. Since it is a third person game, AFMF rarely turns off (only during heat actions from what I have tested). I got a boost from 55-60 to 120-130 and this is HUGE, because the game no longer dips below the refresh rate of my 60hz monitor AND in-combat fluidity is on another level. There are artifacts mainly in interface if you go up and down the menus really fast and sometimes you can see distant NPCs get a sort of trail behind them, but for me personally this is rarely if ever noticeable.
    This is not (at least now) tech for every game, but in most genres where the camera does not move all over the place, it can provide a stunning boost if you hit at least 45fps without AFMF. It seems to go well with Motion Blur, since that masks the jittering objects. AFMF combined with upscaling of FSR is such a longevity boosting tool and I adore the fact that they did not lock it behind the 7000s series.

    Flight simulators. I use AFMF with a heavily modded Juno (Simplerockets). Due to the nature of the game it works well. That said, you can enable AMD enhanced sync with AFMF to prevent screen tearing.
    Also, I used a capture card to record at 120fps. It seems that a lot of the judder comes from what looks like the GPU handling interpolated frames in blocks, with each block being inconsistent with its neighbour as to how far in motion must be calculated. This gives a weird blocky stutter that is not across the whole screen, but in certain areas of the scene. Hopefully AMD can work on improving that, as that alone makes a low fps game terrible to play with AFMF on.
    Great Vid as always Daniel!

    I have always felt that going from 60 to 120fps (even with real frames) don't matter that much in racing games, as there is often high quality motion blur on the road surface close to the camera already blending motion between frames. But as a player you often look at the road ahead of you, and the pixel movement is so slow at that distance that 60fps is actually enough to perform really smooth motion already as it is. 120fps would only really help if you look out from your side window, where the scene is passing by at a much high rate. Although I am very curious about FMF, I will still wait for the official stable release. I'm getting the feeling that the technology won't work as well, because when I need motion smoothness is when turning the camera quickly, but since the technology is reducing frames/cutting off the technology it feels kind of counter intuitive. I can see a massive benefit for something like the Steam Deck if they manage to deliver perfect 30 > 60 fps vsync lock without much added latency. It would work great for games with less camera motion, Adventure games like 'Tunic', Fighting games like 'Gang Beasts', Even slower paced gamesPhantasy Star Online comes to mind for a retro nerd like me (which has forced 30fps). But yeah, on my main PC FMF will probably be disabled most of the time.

    Persona 5 Royal is locked at 120 Hz, so I've used it to play at 165 Hz quite nicely as well. I think this could be a godsend for emulation especially allowing 120Hz without changing any of the game code which would require likely decoupling the logic and frame rate. Also, since it runs at 120 Hz already, and with more frames I think there is less of a difference with them, you can move the camera as fast as you like and it never turns off really

I did not have the time to test this myself on my 6800XT, but if the FMF does not work with V-Sync, how about trying to cap the framerate with Riva Tuner Staristics Server. Maybe it will eliminate the judder.

    Honestly, I expected in-driver FSR3 (aka AFMF) to release for RX 6000 series around january~february '24, after they finish tuning and debugging it, and also reap the dough of it being temporarily exclusive to the 7000 series.
    This has its ups and downs. On the positive side, even the owners of some older cards get to try the new tech as it matures and develops. On the negative, it's still obviously in process of development and maturation, basically "open beta", as evident from multiple limitations of the technology, e.g. in frame pacing with VSync "off", and how when rapid mouse movements are detected it stops generating frames for a brief moment.

    • @jackoberto01
      @jackoberto01 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is only available with pre-release drivers so it's definitely an open beta as you say more than a full release.
      I also expect that the full release will be Q1 24 and hopefully they'll have time to iron out the bugs. I really hope to see how it could be applied to games with an in-engine frame rate cap which is rare but not extinct nowadays.
      I highly doubt we'll see the "turning off on fast movement" to disappear though. It would fundamentally break without access motion vectors and the rendering pipeline

    Love the analysis here. It's tough to quantify. I can tell you that if I play a game that is over 70 fps on my 7900XT and I enable FMF... I am not percieving anything glitchy. Funny enough I enable it and feel like, Ok maybe a little smoother to the eye sure. Still responsive ok.... But then play for 30 minutes and turn it off and immediately ... ya this is no longer as smooth. For me that is the case in CONTROL. A game I normally see 80 ish fps at 1440P maxed out. Acceptable feeling game and looks great. Flip on FMF and it just SEEMS smoother. No artifacts that my eyes pick up and almost never tearing in horizontal lines although occasionally I get a quick glimps of a small one. This is likely because my screen is at 165 Hz and with FMF I am in the 150's to 160's in framerate. In games like Forza 5 where am I already near my monitor refresh at all time's and freesync is doing it's thing? I don't bother. Now I am wishing I had a 240 Hz screen LOL. Its not in fast paced, often 1st person focused games. Using any interpolation here is a compromise at best. Where AFMF shines are strategy games that often are seriously CPU limited and far less latency or render artefact sensitive. In those games, AFMF offers a solution to a problem that has existed for many years. You can easily go back ten years and still find older DX11 strategy games that benefit from AFMF.

I tried this AFMF on my 6600XT at various games like Forza Motorsport and Baldurs Gate 3. I had similar thoughts like this video. Framerate number goes up but smoothness and better experience is doubtful. I already did some videos using RX 7000 series GPUs, although in other games. I've played more off-camera as well. In general the only advantage to the 7000 series that I noticed is Anti-Lag + support (in certain supported games) to help cut down on the latency increase. Other than that the image quality and frame pacing seems to have similar issues. I wouldn't expect miracles from the final release, but if they improved frame pacing a bit, maybe better freesync and vsync support, and added HDR support it would be better than it is now.

    Tried it in RDR2 and it didn't feel that great, I normally play on Vulkan and average around 95 fps so switching to DX12 left me with a base frame rate of 85 which felt alright on its own. When I turned FMF on although the FPS went up it didn't feel as smooth as with it off. This was even while moving around a bit slowly to prevent it from turning off (which helped but is pretty pointless). Vsync was off and FreeSync was enabled but it felt like I was playing on 60~ FPS when moving around. One good thing was that the latency was hardly noticeable because of the base frame rate being high to start off with but the overall experience was underwhelming. Hopefully they provide an option to prevent it from turning off when moving around because at a high base frame rate I don't think the generated frames should be that bad.

    Where I'd like to see these technologies eventually demonstrated is on stuff like the Steam Deck / Rog Ally. The technology seems like it works better when the existing framerate is already higher, and that seems almost pointless. Competitive games tend to already have absurdly high framerates, mostly to keep input lag as minimal as possible. If you're going from 180 -> 240, but you're adding 20ms+ latency to do it, it seems like it's almost a wash.
    This tech seems like the best use cases would be lower end hardware, where it's getting an inconsistent 30-40 fps, and this would get you consistently above 60 for a little extra input latency... or cases like Cyberpunk, where even a higher end rig would struggle with stuff like path tracing, so this pushes it over the line.

    I feel that most people fail to notice that frame generation is often worse option than simply lowering graphical settings. Worse appearance, and lower responsiveness.

    I found that it works great in games that have no refresh rate/fps limit and you are limited by the game engine. Like Holocure. the 120frames with afmf feels so smooth that now I can't play it without. Even though the rock solid 60 are ok and smooth...now that I had a try at afmf I can't go back and playing it on steamdeck with 60fps feels choppy.

    I was absolutely gutted when I tried to install the preview driver on my 6800m laptop and it didnt work. The sad part is the 6800m has basically the same performance as the 6700xt and significantly better performance than the 6600xt
    I'm really worried that they're never going to bring it to the laptops because not many people own amd laptops so there won't be an apparent demand.

      AMD has a pretty large audience using integrated graphics, so I think they'll probably want to adapt the tech for it, and it would be quite ridiculous for them to not allow it for laptop dGPUs with that in mind. At the end of the day, it's all RDNA2, so I doubt it will be difficult to enable.

    The big thing this is really useful for? Games with a 60fps cap. So Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Sekiro - they're obvious candidates for AFMF, they're much better played with a controller and the increase to judder and lag isn't as noticable because of the slower, heavier more considered gameplay. Another example comes to mind - Wolfenstein, The New Order and The Old Blood. Both those games have a hard cap of 60, both are DX11, both are classics held back by technical issues. But instead of running idTech 5 tweaker to fix the 60fps cap and fiddling with fan patches, you could just flip the AFMF switch and jump to 120fps. Pretty cool, right? Can't wait till thos gets rolled out officially :)

    think it's more a case of if you have a higher then 60 hz monitor this will help a lot if your cpu/gpu cant keep up.
    the biggest issue seems to be gsync/freesync and well sync in general, aka pacing. if they get it right...well you really do be downloading free frames.

    I tried it and I think it looks decent on games with locked FPS. Playing casual fighting games smooths out the motion and the input lag isnt very noticeable

    One thing I noticed in the Forza test was the ghosting, it was way way worse... you can easily see it in the comparison you made side to side, especially on the poles to the side of the track at 8:50
    I tested it on slow paced games such as ETS2 (main gain would be less power comsuption for the same fps) and it didn't really have any artifact, I wasn't able to cap the FPS (if anyone can tell me how to do so, please I'd really need it) but with only around 20W more while going from capped 144 fps to 160fps (on rtss, amd overlays shows N/A on the fps, so it's actually 320 fps).
    I think it needs some work, but after all it's still a preview driver, so this gives me quite some hope!

    so i have something to ask in some games like fighting games you actions or moves is like per frames for example right punch is like 5 frames for example that's why it's locked at 60 frames even if u have best pc
    so does this affect these type of games like does it affect the game engine or it only affect your screen
    cuz i heard you can go above fps caps with this
    and what about amd reflex or anti lag (sorry not good with names) does it help with the latency at all
    and if it actually reflect the game engine for game i play called Black desert online where u want to hit 144 and for some specs(classes) u wanna hit 300+ fps it's a really a game changer

    I got a 7800XT recently so I downloaded the forspoken demo to see how the FSR frames looked and felt. I don’t think 60fps is anywhere near a high enough starting point, it still looks as choppy as 60fps but with potential artifacts and extra latency. To be honest, going from 100 to 144 still looked more like 100, but 100 is just so acceptable already that it was harder to notice.
    I would be happy with some artifacts in order for that v sync smoothness, if latency was also tolerable, but even if the visual quality was 1:1 with real frames I currently wouldn’t bother.

    • @HunterTracks
      @HunterTracks 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you configure it properly? It currently works best with Vsync on and a outside the game FPS cap in Forspoken.

    • @constantinesoldatos
      @constantinesoldatos 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Enable Vsync on the AMD panel (not in game), turn on FSR Quality+FG and cap the avg framerate you see on RTSS (for example if you're getting 120 cap it in RTSS at 110 to compensate those frame drops) believe me you will then feel and see the difference. Capping your avg framerate in RTSS will bring the 1% lows up to par with your real time FPS and make it feel even smoother. I had the same issue as you in the beginning before I figured it out. Vsync alone needs to be used with FSR FG cause FSR FG disables VRR which is why it feels choppy. So do that till it gets fixed.

  • @boerbenlp8659
    @boerbenlp8659 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As long as your 1% or 0.1% lows do not get any better with that technology it is hard to improve smothness with driver based generated frames by increasing latency at the same time. I tested a few games (like Cyberpunk, Starfield, Satisfactory, Witcher 3...) with AFMF and the only noticeable positive experience so far was in Medieval Dynasty where it definitely feels smoother when you go from 90 to 165 fps (monitor cap). So I guess it can be positive and hopefully AMD manage to achieve that at least for games where respnsiveness isn't that important it might be an upgrade.
