- When Byakuya Kuchiki was almost killed by Äs Nödt, many fans hoped his little sister Rukia would step up to the plate to fight the terrifying Quincy. When that finally happened, we got a fight that allowed both sides to showcase their true power - but was it a satisfying step for Rukia's development, and for Äs Nödt as a villain?

I feel like byakuya holding rukias hand and telling her that she had a splendid bankai and to thaw out slowly was one of the best moments in the tybwa

@@Mugetsu2021 Byakuya dying is not a debate since that was the writer's original plan. Byakuya survived because he couldn't handle the pressure fans where putting on him.
Rukia fighting As nodt could be seen as avenging her brother.
It would've been brilliant if Rukia won and fear started to creep up again sinds she can't properly disable her bankai. With nobody there to help her she starts building up fear as she's cracking apart.
Ultimately Rukia dies a hero but she also died alone and fearful. Her body never found because the ice melted away.
@@Mugetsu2021 it literally served no purpose for him to stay alive. Rukia vs As Nodt was 10x more lame because he didn't even kill her brother.
Rukia’s Zanpakto is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Soul Society. I’m so glad her Bankai followed suit.

Bleach filler has the opportunity to be some of the best filler in any anime ever, I hope they don’t fuck it up
If they end up on expanding on the final arc with direction from kubo trying to give more time to stuff he hadn't been able to explore in the manga is that still filler?
Kubo would besides its been years he prolly got it planned out.
That sequence between Byakuya and Rukia is probably my favorite in the entire manga. Byakuya's character comes full-circle, and seeing him both acknowledging Rukia's strength and embracing his role as her older brother was immensely satisfying. This is why I'm glad he wasn't killed off; he might not have had a major role in any of the final Quincy fights, but this scene more than made up for it in my book.
Personally my favorite is the moment with Nemu and her captain. After all this time, her finally shows that he has a heart
I love Rukias cold dead eyes. Adds something to her character. Makes her that much more badass.
Makes me feel like she is really his sister and student and has finally graduated his class!
Yeah. It shows how hard Rukia was trying to act like she wasn't phased by As Nodt's power, but she underestimated him slightly because of what she was able to do with Sode no Shirayuki, but that his power worked in such a way that was difficult for her to counter until Byakuya came to give him a brief reprieve and allowing her to regain her focus and using her Bankai to end the fight.
I hope when As Nodt is introduced in the anime I hope they make the scenes with him as scary as possible

When Byakuya said "A sword swung in fear protects no one." It made me think of the fight between Hisagi and Findor. Hisagi says anyone who doesn't fear their sword has no right to wield it.
When you swing it with fear and only fear it are 2 different things if you think about it.
@@kledio2804 I suppose so. You can swing it out of fear like Byakuya when he had a meltdown fighting As Nödt. Or you can swing it with fear and obliterate your opponent like Hisagi did to Findor.
Quamel Webb or it could just be two different ways of thinking. Like you originally stated. Hisagi has fear when he fights it pushes him as he has fear of his power destroying everything so he fights to shelter that fear of hurt by as he fights and Byakuya uses his heart and courage to guide his sword towards his target something he cannot do with fear in place of his heart. Remember He said “swung out of fear”

Totally different situation. Byakuaya is talking about attacking out of panic fear. Hisagi is referencing the idea of understanding that your actions could have fatal consequences.
As Nodt was definitely the scariest and best designed character next to Ulquiorra.
I love him so much. Beside Haschwalth and Uryu, my favorite sternritter. Hoping he was a little more powerful but still great.

I think everyones transformations forms are top tier of anime. Literally every transformation is just litty.

I think As' personality shift isn't *too* out of left field. I can imagine that, going into the first invasion, he was stoic and quiet because he didn't fully know how his fight with a Captain would go. And you can see him being quite shocked when Byakuya does manage to cut him his hand a bunch, but when his Fear begins to work, he begins his monologue about fear, his confidence surfacing. And it's that confidence that he exudes in the 2nd invasion, as I can imagine that As is feeling pretty proud of himself for stealing one of the most powerful Bankai in his Daten and having left the infamous Byakuya near death. So when Rukia arrives, he keeps riding that wave and when she shatters it, he can't handle it and freaks out.
Please do byakuya vs ichigo. Not because it is the most iconic battle in the series, as even people who stopped or barely watched bleach have seen this fight, but due to the moral clash going on underneath. Byakuya's stance of choosing to uphold the law in spite of his relation to Rukia by all means should be the moral right. In this day and age where nepotism can buy justice byakuya stands in direct opposition to this. Yet the main character and the one we as the audience sympathize most with is actually advocating for the use of your own personal skills or power to aid in the disruption of the law by your fanily member. I just like how much was really going on there
Very well said. I love the fight between Byakuya and Ichigo, it was probably my favorite fight in the series. I would love to see a fight analysis incorporating the political ideas mentioned in your comment.
People being maf byakuya didnt died. We got an awesome moment between him and rukia and also renji. Im glad he survived
As Nodt is my favorite Sternritter. I got so much joy seeing Rukia achieving her bankai. Only wish she could've used it again. Still this is one of my most anticipated fights i want to see animated.
I think it would’ve been interesting to see Rukia train for her bankai with not only Byakuya but Orihime as well. Heck I would’ve even liked to see Orihime and Rukia battle together .
Reasoning ; earlier in the series you see Rukia and Orihime often times relying on each other to train and get stronger . During the arrancar arc Orihime felt useless because they didn’t want her to fight , and she knew she lacked the power to really be effective like she should be. I’m the TYBW arc dang near every soul reaper feels this exact way , and I’m sure Rukia esp felt this way when Byakuya fell to As Nodt. I think it would’ve been a sweet call back for both characters that’s not out of context .
I love it, Rukia was the FIRST Shimigami we were introduced into the series, the staple for the first season and poster girl from there on out. She is the first thing we think of when we think of soul reapers, shimigami, DEATH GODS. Its fitting that when we finally see her Bankai, its one that embraces death, one that kills her whilst furthering her power. As any other death, cold, deadly, and beautiful.
You can even twist it around saying its her Kuchiki Pride and superiority leaking out stating proudly that shimigami are gods of death and are stronger in the afterlife than humans and superior than spirits. Can't tell you how many times she actually looked like her older brother during this fight.
Seeing as Rukia is BEST GIRL i’m happy with the way her fight went. I liked her bankai debut and that one scene where she says “i can’t be affected from your fear because i’m not alive right now”

Rukia is definitely one of my favorite character of Bleach and this fight made me love her character even more.

Rukia’s bankai is definitely of the most powerful yet riskiest as it will affect the user’s life too if not fully mastered. Since it has limited radius too, the enemy should be immobile as well.
I know this video is a bit old by now, but I just came across it. I liked your analysis very much, specially the part where you mentioned the parallel between Rukia and Ichigo, being white and black, but there is something else. I'd like to add: Rukia's Zampakutou is called Sode no Shirai Yuki, which means "Snow White's Sleve". When I saw her Bankai I immediately thought of a princess, but in a Japanese style instead of the European used to represent Snow White.
Rukia Bankai is basically a cold fusion bomb.

I just realized. Kubo always paired Rukya with the most creepy or disturbing enemy. First her exchange with Ichimaru when she explains how she always found him unseatling, then she fights Arroniero, an eldritch abomination and a traumatic experience and then Äs Nödt. Poor Rukya.

As Nodt's personality change might not be a personality change... it might be part of The Fear, changeing how he acts to unnerve his target more.
I felt like this fight would've been more impactful if Byakuya died against Nodt.

Did anybody else notice that Byakuya's normal shikai now is on the level of his bankai? Cause he straight up tells As Nodt that he wasnt using it. Which begs the question.....how freaking strong did byakuya get with his royal realm training?
Because byakuya is kind of fearless his only fear was to loose his honor which ichigo helped him win over and the second would be to lose rukia so his presence would be justified

Rukia power boost was indeed astronomical
the requirement for a SR to steal a Captain Bankai is to have equal or more Spirit power/Reiatsu than the Shinigami/bankai they are stealing, in the case of Yamamoto only Yhwach posses the power to take it but in AS Nodt case he could steal Byakuya bankai which means they posses similar Power levels, we also get a glimpse of this when Cang Du is defeated by Bankai Toshiro but then breaks his ice seal with his Volstandig which again means they are also of equal power.
Rukia had no problem one shoting Base As nodt with her Shikai and then one shoting him with her bankai so Rukia is muchs tronger than BYakuya was before his Royal realm power boost.
While she got major power boost, she couldnt defeat as nodt alone. She wouldve lost when he activated tatarforas without byakuya interferring. And her shikai and bankai were both absolute zero, as nodt survived absolute zero, so it doesnt make any sense

As Nodt always reminded me of Karasu and how he was introduced in YYH. They seem very similar in style, battle tactics, and personality tbh
What's weird is that from my understanding Shinigamis are supposed to be beings of pure spirit so As Nodt's thorns never should've worked on Byakuya since according to As himself the thorns needs to make physical contact for it to even work but Byakuya shouldn't have a physical body unless he's using a Gigai. Same goes for As Nodt's Volstantdig to transfer fear via the optic nerves but again Rukia isn't supposed to have optic nerves let alone blood

I think its an interesting take that in order to conquer fear and death, rukia had to bring herself to the absolute closest to death.

Oddly enough I see Rukia's first release similar to a character from an old and unpopular anime in the US: Cygnus Hyoga and Aquarius Camus from Saint Seiya.
Both of them are regarded as "the magicians of ice and cold", Hyoga goes as far as being able to use the absolute zero in both offensive, defensive or just to restrain the opponents. All of those skills are in the arsenal of Rukia's zanpaktou.

i feel like one thing we do have to b careful of when it comes to manga analysis is the translation discrepancies. it might just be a translation issue due to language incompatibility. but yeah, solid analysis!

I think that's the 2nd biggest issue with the TYBW the convenient match ups. The amount of convenient ability matchups and counters is annoying. Lille Barro vs Nanao and Mayuri vs Pernida even though he had no idea what Pernida was.
I thought the same thing earlier. I was imagining what if shunsui was the one to encounter pernida? He would have died.
Nanao part wasn't even a match up thing. It was more of plot pull. We didn't even know nanao could fight. Kubo pulling stuff outta know where, I just mean nanao's sword ability was ridiculous.
@@rayvonvelez3129 thats my point his ass pulls are God-tier. Like he could've easily set up the still silver by just showing it form after the first Aushwalen in one of the dead sternritters. Also yes Nanaos ability is super specific and OP

fair enough that byakuya destroyed the veil before the eyes engulf him with fear, but a while back rukia couldnt move because she was looking directly at as nodt. so shouldnt byakuya also be paralyzed with fear? which at no point he was or didnt even try to look away.
He should be yeah - I'm guessing this is one of those nebulous instances where his reiatsu maybe overpowered As'? Not sure.
@@MrTommo2304 i never liked that...i thought it was cheap to have someone use an ability, even put in effort to execute it to than just use their spiritual pressure to negate it...it was ok with aizen because thats his thing(even during this war) , but now when you make op characters , you use spiritual pressure to throw everything out the window

This fight wouldve been better had Byakuya actually died.
It makes more sense, cause Byakuya story arc basically complete. He's a better man than previously, acknowledges Ichigo and others.

I have to disagree about the scientific part being a bit of a mess. It’s actually really cool to see a real world application and not just something fantastical. It also remind me of the Quincy ability to use reishi to move their broken limbs it’s pretty much the same concept.

Theres a lot of hate for the bleach movies but i think they are all quite interesting stories just by themselves.
Even now after i seen all possible bankais i rank Ruikia bankai as the most broken bankai in bleach, absolute zero? imagine that in the hand of someone with insane reiatsu, Rukia with her bankai should defeat any being that doesn't have an absurd level of reiatsu above her, NODT should have die the moment Rukia activated her bankai and went absolute zero

This battle would have been infinity times better if byakuya wasn't alive. Seeing rukia avenge her gone brother would've been great. It felt weird with byakuya being alive and when he shows up in the fight. Didn't feel right.

I liked the fight overall, though around this point things start to get out of hand, be it last minute Bankai all of a sudden, op Quincy powers, convenient counters, little depth because of Kubo's haste... Hopefully the anime will do it better.
My only dislike is when Rukia reveals her Shikai true ability. Maybe it was a translation issue but I didn't like that it did absolute zero. It would have been better if it just went to extremely low temperatures thanks to her being able to control her body temperature and that her Bankai had the ability to instantly turn everything down to absolute zero. If not, I don't see how the Bankai is more powerful than absolute zero Shikai haha

Uhm, common sense said that if her Shikai is absolute zero, so is her bankai. It's new so if mastered, she's basically a Yamamoto in reverse, that anything comes close freezes to absolute zero.
Byakuyas line are opposing to hisagi lol and kaname take on fear
Would love some added material in the anime that Kubo had for this arc, cause it seems like he had so many ideas he wanted to explore, but he was running out of time. They’ve had so many years to develop these ideas, it would be great to see them in the anime.
As Nodt was heavily based on the appearance of Avatar's lead Singer Johannes Eckerstrom and maybe some other previous metal singers (the outfit itself is pretty goth, as almost nobody else has that many unnecessary button. lol
Overall a great character design even if he wasn't the strongest sternritter.
I thought that maybe her blade was affected by zangetsu since her shinigami powers essentially spent a few months on ichigo. Byakuya removed them but they had to go somewhere right.
