  • The owner of a brew pub in little John Day has plenty of complaints about the state of Oregon, and she agrees on a lot of issues with proponents of "Greater Idaho." But she doesn’t think the answer is to leave the state.

I'm curious why would a state mandate how many licenses should be granted in a local area. Should that be a county or city law? Does Idaho have they same state law that Utah has, statewide lower limit in alcohol for every bottle of beer. I lived in SLC in 2001. I didn't drink at the time but that was just stupid.

Please remember that the collapse of the timber industry in Oregon happened because LP and GP didn't feel like dealing with unionized millworkers. They'd rather ship raw logs to Asia, which they ultimately ended up doing, and however much you may blame the Owl, you'd be wrong.

    • @CRneu

timber collapsed across the entire country because of automation taking the majority of the jobs. It used to take hundreds or thousands of peoples to work a mill, now it takes a couple dozen. The timber industry was warned about this for a long, long time. they refused to acknowledge facts, much like rural oregonians are doing with the greater idaho movement, and instead made it an identity crisis while blaming liberals. the death of timber towns was almost entirely self inflicted. They lost jobs to automation which killed tax revenue, then their schools and public services dried up because of the lack of tax revenue, then they refused to pass new taxes which lead to no police and public services. Now all the old timber towns are dead/dying, their populations are aging, and nobody wants to live there because of no public services. It's entirely self inflicted because they refused to modernize, much like what eastern oregon is doing.

It's easy to blame unions when many times it's just that the corporation knows they can make more money by using cheap labor overseas. Which do you think might be better for America, good paying jobs here or shitty paying jobs for poor people in Asia? We need to rebuild our system of tariffs that would force corporations to employ Americans and pay them a good wage which is good for America.
When unions were strong a man with no high school diploma working on a loading dock would earn enough to own a home, not need his wife to work and buy a car every few years and take the family on a vacation every summer. College was almost free so his kids would fare much better than he did.
Unions gave us THE WEEKEND. They ended CHILD LABOR. They created the 40 HOUR WORK WEEK and OVERTIME , SICK LEAVE and PAID VACATIONS as well as a lot of other truly great things. When unions were strong this country built an infrastructure that was the envy of the world and the economy was humming.
The notion that Unions are bad which you've been indoctrinated into believing is true is in fact a lie.
When unions were strong, the wage of the CEO was seven times the wage of the worker on the line. Now the CEO wage is HUNDREDS of times the wage of the worker on the line.

Currently the State spends more in Eastern oregon counties than they contribute to the state coffers. So at least as far as money goes, Eastern Oregon is not pulling its weight….. for Idaho, the increase of land and population would bolster the state and have more land for those looking to come to Idaho which has 75% of its land within their border being federal land that can’t be lived in.

Interested in how this this situation plays out. Reason is, this “not listened to” thing is EVERYWHERE! Including the province of British Columbia, just north of you. It’s where I live. The conservative but lightly populated mountain areas feel they’re ignored by the highly populated Vancouver area; Vancouver Island (where the actual capital is in Victoria) feels ignored by the mainland, and so on. And so on, and on, and on…
Nor is it any better in Alberta (one province east), where I used to live. Rural south feels ignored by gung-ho conservative Calgary, who feels ignored by industrial Edmonton (capital city), and forestry north feels ignored by everyone, and so on and on and on…

I think the ruling politics involved in this hear what the rural areas are saying. They just don't care. Their ideology will always win out over the good of all the people. This is happening everywhere. The idea, in this new reality, of the left and right coming together at the table to work out differences and find the common good for ALL citizens has sadly vanished. There are no more debates. Do as we say, or else, period. Look around you. Do you see or hear of the left and right coming together to hear each other's views and get to the middle ground of issues. NO! Twenty or thirty years ago, it was possible. Not anymore. Do you ser or hear the younger generations debating issues. NO! If anyone disagrees with their beliefs or agendas that person is deemed racist, homophobic, etc ,etc.,etc.

  • @UnpepperedAngus

From an economic perspective, I think a lot of the problem is that most of the US upper middle class is made up of highly specialized jobs that you (for the most part) need large population centers to sustain. Other than Bend, (which is more central Oregon, and I believe wants to stay in Oregon), Eastern Oregon just doesn't quite have that. As a mechanical engineer with an emphasis in computational modeling, there just aren't jobs in rural America. It would be different if we had more minerals to mine. Or had a major river in the southeast portion, to support more agriculture. But, as it stands unless federally we start incentivizing more business development in rural areas, I don't see a whole lot changing, whether the area is Idaho, or Oregon.
Also I don't think enough people appreciate that people leaving rural America and housing costs in urban America are symptoms of the same problem.

Portland and Salem have changed their mentality about "family," stating over and over that they can do whatever they want because they have the vote in the Oregon house. EO is ignored and mocked constantly. EO wants freedom, lower taxes, and a state government which aligns with our values. Oregon stopped listening, negotiating, etc. Oregon basically stopped inviting EO to "family gatherings", left EO out of financial and decision making discussions, and took EO money to spend it on things EO doesn't approve of. The problem has been festering for decades. As for Utah, that state has a religious divide that separates non-Mormons and declines to support them in business. Their "urban/rural" divide runs much deeper than mere civil and lifestyle boundaries. It is deeply religious and cultural.

Hilarious. I grew up in Idaho and I left it in my early 20s and I have never missed it. Most of my friends that grew up in Idaho have moved away and they don’t miss it.
People should know that in the early 2000s over 86% of Idahoans voted for tournaments and the Idaho Senate ignored them. Let me repeat that the Senate ignored them. It was the death of democracy in Idaho and the nation did not notice and the people of Idaho did not care that their own senators told them we hear what you voted for but we don’t care. The Senate said they were not going to uphold civilian votes because the people were naïve and didn’t understand that those men had been there for so long that if they left the entire state would collapse and have a major problems so in the interest of the state they overrode democracy. It has the lowest minimum wage in the nation. And it used to have a low cost of living but that has changed over the last five years and the apartment that I used to live in in Boise now cost $200 less than the apartment that I live in in San Diego. I make over $10 more an hour in San Diego doing the exact same job. The cost of living in Idaho is in sane! And if that’s not enough think about this it is a big government state it is a nanny state it protects you from yourself. Marijuana is still illegal. Speed limits are intentionally driven down to 20 mph even in a four lane zone with no residential areas. In California I get 32 miles to the gallon when I go to Idaho it drops down to 25 miles to the gallon. The reason is because they put stoplights and stop signs at every intersection and the speed limit is usually 20 miles an hour this means your vehicle never generates enough forward momentum to let off the gas and you are constantly sitting at intersections with a very long time the lights even if you were the only person at the intersection you can sit there for several minutes with your car idling. In California in orange county I could drive 10 miles and it would take me approximately 10 minutes in Boise Idaho I tried to drive 4.6 miles to my friends house and it took 25 minutes simply because 20 mile an hour speed limits with stoplights at every block.
I’m finally the people in Idaho actually believe that there are more billionaires in idaho per capita than any place in the world because that’s what their statesman newspaper tells them. I have never tripped over any fancy cars in Idaho because they don’t exist because the people up there are broke. There are more Mormons per capita than any place else in the world so you’re going to live with a bunch of people who wear funny underwear they believe is blessed with God who will tell you that marijuana will lead you to the devil and that supporting your local business on a Sunday is blasphemy towards God. Oh yeah Idaho’s a great fucking place to live if you hate America

The Northwest logging/lumber industry has its tentacles attached to executives with maps on walls in high rises as far away as New York, London, Berlin, and Tokyo. It wasn’t the Spotted Owl that caused the decline of the Timber industry-and hurt families that had logged the forests for generations. And it wasn’t the fault of Conservationists who became an important voice for our over logged forests resulting in catastrophic damage to our ecosystems.
    Follow the money.
The forests of the great Northwest are a fraction of what they had been in the past. Greed blinds people of nobility and simple common sense. Do you have to log every last tree? Has it ever occurred to you that replanting a once thriving forest with a single species can never produce a thriving ecosystem for the long run? That a forest is by definition full of diverse species; including countless critters like frogs and insects and millions of tiny organisms that play their parts in maintaining their thriving communities? All of which are killed by the implementation of modern logging practices-including the spraying of pesticide poisons after a site has been clear cut.
The karma finally caught up with the industry.

    • @donadams8345
      @donadams8345 ปีที่แล้ว

I worked for a number of years for the USFS in north Idaho. The easy timber was taken out of the forests over many, many years of logging. Yes, there is still timber there but it is not as good as it used to be and it will damage the land to get it out. The environmental impact will be greater too since much of the other forested areas have already been logged. The Forest Service I knew didn't do clear cuts but commercial forests may still do it. You have to be careful about who you blame for bad forestry practices, be it federal, state or private.

What I don't understand about the concept of moving the OR/ID border is what happens to the demographics as the decades and centuries pass? Many people in Eastern Oregon do not feel heard by the governance of Oregon and want to be better represented. That I understand. But what happens, and it WILL happen... when these areas get built up and the public's needs evolve away from the current needs? These areas will not remain rural 200 years from now and public needs will change and the scenario of wishing a border was not moved way back in 2023 could become real. Is anybody considering the long-term impact of moving an existing border. Personally, in 2023, I am good with whatever they do as I split time between both states.
