Why a fifth generation Oregonian is pushing for a ‘Greater Idaho’ takeover

  • Sandie Gilson has lived in the John Day area for years. She’s a board member for "Greater Idaho," the group looking to have Idaho annex the eastern half of Oregon. For her, it's a matter of both political and cultural considerations, and she says that both sides would benefit from the divorce.

Speaking as an at least 5th generation eastern Oregonian (Malheur County), I support the greater Idaho movement 1000%! If I could sign a paper that divorced us from the other side of Oregon tomorrow, I would GLEEFULLY sign it RIGHT NOW!

The truth is that the rest of Oregon wouldn't miss the economic burden of providing services to Eastern Oregon that greatly exceed the state tax revenue generated in the area. I noticed that Sandie Gilson blamed the Spotted Owl for the decline in logging. Let's pretend that the primary reason for the decline in timber production is due to the fact that cutting second growth forest does not produce as much as old growth did. The vast majority of the forests are on federal land where the last few remaining old growth trees have been reserved from harvest. Even if the last old growth tree were sent to the mill it wouldn't make a significant difference to timber production rates. Ms Gilson wasn't even honest about how far it is to the nearest Wallmart! (It's 2-1/2 hours, not 3.) Another obstacle to your plan is that if Idaho ever looked at the economics of letting eastern Oregon join them they wouldn't want you either. Nevertheless, I hope you succeed in your efforts to move the state line. If you do get the chance to leave, don't let the door hit you in the backside on your way out. 😝

Why does the federal government own any land in Oregon or any other state? Perhaps a military base or post, and federal office buildings could be federally owned, but other than that the federal government doesn’t have a right to own land in states.

The State government needs to stop imposing laws on the entire state that do not benefit the entire State. Most of these issues seem to need local action not statewide mandates. If Portland, Salem and Eugene want cannabis sales, allow them to impose local ordinances that permit that activity. If those cities want more gun control, let them, but allows other areas to function within the 2nd Amendment. I think “party” politics are at play here. The “party” wants cannabis, stricter gun controls, less or more restricted law enforcement, lighter sentence for criminals, illegal immigration, and so on. Those positions do not suit everyone in the State, nor should they.

Ever hear of “swing states”, I know you have: the six to twelve moderately sized states that decide who becomes president by way of the electoral college. Folks like you keep repeating the myth that the EC protects the small states, but in fact, it protects slave owners, and the rich, and the swing states cut the Californias and Vermonts right out of the picture. How does it benefit you, or anyone else when a repulsive degenerate gets the White House after he lost the election by 3,000,000 votes? That’s not democracy, and you’re not calling for democracy, you want santa to exempt you from the modern world. There is no santa, and when change comes, you either roll with it, or you get rolled over. And if you want to see what happens to people who think they can resist change? Look no further than San Francisco and its nasty housing market. That’s the textbook of example of what happens wen you try to resist change (instead of planning for it and steering it).

The Supreme Court case of Gray v. Sanders in 1963 ruled the County Unit System in Georgia unconstitutional. This removed all electoral college like systems in all states nationwide. The only reason the federal Electoral College is still active is it would require a Constitutional Amendment to abolish the Electoral College.
The same happened to over 30 state senates modeled on the US Senate with the SCOTUS case of Reynolds v. Simms (1964).

It does seem as if many on the left no longer hide their contempt for rural American's. I truly wish this was not the case, and worry about the idea of states breaking up, but I am not sure what the solution is. It is completely expected that you will from time to time elect people who support your ideas and periodically elect people who do not, but what do you do when after 30 years only people you do not support get elected. At that point are you a valued member of a free society, or are you a subject who has to do what you are told in perpetuity? When you have ONE county like Multnomah who voted for Kotek with 265,805, the question becomes, how can 8 counties with a total population of only 191,051 compete with just that one county during a state election? 2022 election where out of 36 counties only 12 counties voted for Kotek meaning 24 counties voted for Drazan with a 75% of those population of voters. 12 counties in western Oregon can out vote the other 24 counties is a dictatorship and a problem. The government only cares about a few selected people, and to heck with everyone else. Including the people that vote for that government. It's a shame that this kind of division is even allowed to be part of any discussion. Political and ideological differences fractures the unity of a nation. Since 2016, the division within the nation has exponential increased. The US is militarily probably the most difficult nation to invade but why even think that way? Adversaries know how the mighty USSR ended. Not by invasion whatsoever. Neither did the great Ottoman empire or the Roman empire end that way. The US's adversaries aren't playing that game. If they don’t want to partake in legal cannabis then don’t? Also who is trying to take away the self-sufficiency? The only argument here that made kinda sense to me is how the gun laws should work differently in the country vs the city. Everything else feels like “I want to impose my way of living on other people.” Everyone here has a very fair and free choice to not partake in anything that doesn’t reflect whatever values they hold. Gun laws initiated by the ideological Left work exactly the same in the city as they do out in the country in that they open the door to further lawlessness and despair. Such gun laws work AGAINST the interests of those who are law-abiding. It's the Left who want to impose their ideals on everyone else, not the Right. I have lived on Idaho and eastern Washington
Oregon does not have enough revenue to maintain its state like Washington
does from Boeing to Barley and boat building. Oregon has a logging industry but is reluctant to utilise it. Oregon
relies on tourism and small business and federal money for the 5 freeway.
So they want to let go of anything past 30 miles East of the 5 freeway...if the current administration was not busy redefining the word infrastructure to fit their pie in the sky dream , Oregon could benefit from a desperately needed infrastructure bill just sitting on the House floor. I would like to hear Ms. Gilson explain how pot legalization is any different in rural counties than urban ones, and how it is anything other than a step toward allowing people to live their lives as they see fit. The only meaningful evaluation of the disagreements between the urban and rural areas is to examine each particular policy of contention and determine exactly the point of contention. No doubt there are some where rural interests were clearly overlooked. However, I suspect there are many points of contention, like pot legalization, where the objections of some rural residents are little more than sour grapes. No way to say for sure without working the details.

Sour cream is something most Oregonians can agree to, but sour is too kind a word to describe the disagreement between two large groups of people in Oregon, that disagreement ultimately about how serious or how Fraudulent mental healthcare is.
Typically, local media censors much the same as local schools, serious talk among the adults. That said, the reality in Oregon that is the disagreement between Oregonians is ultimately about how serious or Fraudulent the psychologists and psychiatrists are.
This disagreement didn't exist before the Progressive caucus became the dominant political faction within the Democratic Party, in Oregon. Since that happened and/or was reported to have happened in Oregon there has been a profound disagreement that is typically not spoken to in mass media nor at schools for children, primarily.
Many Oregonians live in information silos which are the metaphorical equivalent to a right wing survivalist's information silo. That reality has allowed for the profound and existential disagreement between what is church or cult of state (having nothing to do with science nor reason, indeed a faith based group) and what is legitimate government. Its the same disagreement that Governor Kitzhaber got himself into with influence peddling.
Mental health is, largely, the profession of influence peddling. It is used, more than in any other sector, the medical sector of the economy. Oregonians play dumb about how good and how wonderful the Oregon Health Plan is when Oregon, statistically, has the most medical malpractice for sex abuse by doctors to their patients in the entire USA. I used Google, found the law firm that talks about the "prevailing" academic study on medical malpractice throughout the USA.
Its not a disagreement about abortion as that disagreement pre-existed, was a pre-existing condition, and never was Greater Idaho talked about.
Progressives want something like a Mormon Utah, only instead a Progressive Mental Health cult of state that is never guilty of influence peddling. They are, I think and this is only my opinion, the Oregonians who really love the Oregon Health Plan because they use it all the time. The Greater Idaho Oregonians don't use it all the time and probably the least often (gross) and per capita..... "mental healthcare professionals" to assist them with decision making.

I'm glad you are stepping up to take care of your responsibilities. I grew up in a small rural town, I know how the elite deal with their problem people, they send them elsewhere. As for momon utah, they are using religion for tax exclusions and claims. They are the reason many find religions offensive because they are businesses. Time to tax them and cut off loopholes. Spirituality if free. That is why Jesus Christ never had a building or asked for tithing. Because people use it for status and making money. Religion in the US is f'd up.

@@carsi7282 Do you have the courage to speak to what everyone sees and does not speak to in public? That there is no scientific merit to any DSM-5 diagnosis as none of them are neurological nor genetic diagnosis. DSM-5 is peer review same as a church committee of deacons and their version of a board meeting. The chemical imbalance theory for diagnosis was proven non scientific, pure speculation.
And look at all the money the state pays the mentally ill. Look at affordable housing and the priority scheduling different people get for the same affordable housing unit.
Everyone knows, its both plain and obvious, the psychiatrists and psychologists are NOT the neurologists and genetic scientists or DNA sequencers. The first pair does not use science they use peer review and esteem and self esteem of those peers is also their merit. The second pair, the neurologists and geneticists, are scientists as in scientific medicine, fact based medicine.
Its obscene. It really is obscene how cult of state mental healthcare has become and how those advertisers for for profit psychiatric medication effectively run the journalists at all the major news networks. The journalists don't even care to do journalism, they just don't want to get in trouble or be in trouble such they are lectured by a psychiatrist or worse, a psychologist who is merely a member of the Progressive caucus instead of the expert opinion on being human, of the state PhD that isn't a real medical doctor despite most people insisting psychiatrists are medical doctors, "oblivious" of the financial incentives for being so disabled.

This is why the federal government has 2 congressional bodies. The state gooberments need the same idea. The new body would be like the US Senate. Each county would get one representative in this new legislative body. It would be equal in powers to the existing body. The 2 bodies would have to work together to pass legislation to send to the governor for his final approval. This would give the rural areas equal representation. Of course this creates a whole new bunch of bloodsucking politicians and staffers but I don’t see any other solution. The left would fight this tooth and nail.

Well, i have a sibling that lives in Idaho (Boise) & she is a Democrat such as am i, & she says Idaho is a very RED - State; and 'their' "values" are those where she often openly hears racial slurs, their government is rabidly anti-woman (pro fetus above the health & life of the woman), & no, you really would not want to risk any Democratic type bumper stickers on your vehicles or signage in your lawn. In fact, she only sees pro trump type imagery around her. Even her own son who lives there, is someone she can often barely tolerate 2b around ... just sayin ...

@@aguerra41 Right? Thats just a first amendment sort of issue though. It doesnt REALLY matter if you are a morally repugnant piece of filth right winger (or the strawman that they pretend you are so they have a bad guy to attack, which means they are the good guy in their minds). The second amendment cannot be exercised in the state of Portland either. At least not if you are carrying a gun and get attacked by a mob of protestors that beat the mess out of you...Pro-fetus is a new term. I think it is absolutely and definitely still pro-life but again, language is very important to leftists. You see...These sort of problems are why things are as bad as they are and have like 70% of the land mass of the state wanting to leave. The sad reality here is; We just want to be left alone and we disagree with the other sides ideas/opinions. They viscerally hate a group of people that dont actually exist in large part but they attack us as if we are all ACTUALLY that group.

Anti abortion is not anti woman necessarily. Over 98% of abortions are NOT for rape, threat to mom's life, or extreme fetal abnormality. People are upset that abortion is being used like a handshake. MANY far left socially liberal "values" are based on little to no logic or are morally disastrous to human civilization

Ask a Native American first about having white people take over. Have they traveled to Idaho and asked if they are wanted? There are big cities and rural areas in Idaho with the same issues. Has anyone told them they can't shut down schools if needed? Maybe the gun law can be adjusted for rural areas? If the cops are three hours away, what cops are going to search your home to check for a gun safe? I have had deer, coyotes, chipmunks, squirrels, and raccoons in my backyard in Forest Grove, OR. We have farms here also. Western states are large, and all the population is never going to see eye to eye on everything. They can make county and city laws, and it seems sheriff's can pick and choose what they want to enforce. Does it just seem they are pissed because they are considered to be in a blue state?

  • @marmac7619
    @marmac7619 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I can understand some of hers & the others concerns about certain gun laws, for sure; & i guess i don't have enuf info to get why the pot laws are bothersome, since one can 'just say no;' but its when the many of them talk so much of a different set of "values," i have to wonder exactly 'what' values those are? Are they supporters of white, male supremacy? Of forcing women to keep a fetus even at risk of death? and just things like that? I would agree to the need for some work arounds on some weapon specifics, but those other 'values' as yet not so clearly defined, now if they are what i believe they to be, well i just can't see ever compromising with a type of people who are anti-POCs, anti-Woman, anti-LGBTQ ... & even anti-Immigrant and along those lines?

I hear you… but those tax dollars also pay for specialized medical care you’d need if you have a heart attack or stroke. And that care would only happen in (gulp!) Portland. I think we all need to slow down and not have knee-jerk reactions because we don’t like this law or that law. Do you think that everyone agreed with the U.S. constitution when it was drafted? You have to take the good with the bad; nothing is absolute.

understanding the frustration. But to start the process of moving borders because your unhappy. is political suicide. because then you open up for CA, texas, and every other damn state to be the same and instead of a united states of american you have red and blue states. if they wan representation, make inner oregon more attractive for folks to come, visit, understand. otherwise its on you as a rural oregon native. Popele are attracted to cities, that give jobs, housing etc. while expensive, there's alot more amenities there, many rural locations across the country don't want housing built, or other things that will modernize their area to make it more attractive. its simple logic. want more representative? get more people to live in your area NO matter how many idaho senators think its a good idea, they do not have the funds to transfer the dollar mount needed to buy everything. and IF YOU THINK congress will allow it? hey Non Oregonians? Will YOU HELP PAY for rural oregon to move to idaho on your taxpayer dollars because they are unhappy with their elected officials?

Conservative Californian counties (There are a lot of conservatives and conservative areas in Cali) should not be held as colonized people's by urbanites. The same with Illinois, same with New York. Rural Areas will inherently have less people, what you are saying it fuck your agriculture industry, fuck your natural resource industry, fuck your wild life conservation, fuck daring to be rural. Just be a city instead, that fixes all the issues. That's not how this works, and just cause cities have more people does not mean rural areas should live under subjugation as second class citizens. At the end of the day, cities need rural areas. Cities need food, cities need natural resources, cities/urab areas are incapable of conserving wilderness, and at the end of the day, are incapable of doing most of these jobs. Rural areas can survive just fine without urban areas, it is urban areas that are reliant on rural areas. So your logic is backwards, and if it was followed to it's logical concussion it would mean no rural areas which would mean no food or natural resources.
Also most of Oregon, especially east Oregon is privately owned or owned by the federal government. There is not much to buy. On top of that , east Oregon has a lot of mining opportunity which cannot be done under Oregon's democratic government. Under Idaho's regulations, those natural resources can be tapped and would cover the cost of Oregon plenty of times over.
