Eastern Oregon sheriff is still on the fence about ‘Greater Idaho’ movement

  • Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley is critical of recent ballot measures, ones he thinks have made his little agency's job of policing a large, sparsely-populated county more difficult. But he still has hope for the future and isn't ready to endorse "Greater Idaho" as the answer.

      We have sheriffs like that in our country, but I agree with this sheriff that the problem of Boise will be just like Portland. Boise is more liberal and it's metro area will soon be over 1 million people. And the power in government here is the Idaho Cattleman's Association. Compared to Grant County I guess I live in a small county but it is still the largest county in Idaho and the 18th largest in the U.S. But if we get Oregon, the Boise area will get even bigger and be just like Portland was for eastern Oregon.

    Do what West Virginia did from Virginia and break away from Oregon without becoming part of Idaho, become East Oregon.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't want to do that because of the political challenge. Adding a State requires a larger majority vote from Congress than moving the borders of one. Also, since adding a new State would mean 2 new conservative senators, there's effectively zero chance that a single Democrat would vote for it. Changing the border would just change the letters next to some Republican representatives' names, and maybe Idaho picks up 1 or 2 electoral votes.
      West Virginia got past all that because the entire South was busy trying to be a foreign country and the North was happy to admit anyone into the Blue Team.
      The only route I see for a separate State, whether it be Eastern Oregon or the State of Jefferson (rural OR+CA) thing, is to strike a deal. Democrats have been trying to get Statehood for Puerto Rico since forever, but Republicans block it because of how it'll affect Congress and elections. If Red State Jefferson is admitted at the same time as Blue State Puerto Rico, that could potentially be a handshake. DC is another liberal Statehood ask. However I think both sides are generally too insular with their own thing to recognize the parallels there - I haven't seen anyone talk about such a compromise except me.

People have fled California because of what it has become but moved to hear and are changing to what they left. The only way we can fix this is to go to an electoral college voting system. Southern and eastern Oregon have no voting power., If Portland wants more taxes, no guns, and electric machines let them have that. Often times the law will not allow for "the individual" to take responsibility. It boxes them into "a solution" which is requires impractical or unreasonable to implement and drawn up not by the locals, but by the ideologues in Portland and Salem. It imposes it's own values, on a people who do not hold them.
    I tell this story periodically because it displays the disorder the Olympian house is in. Years ago a wolf advocacy group pushed through an initiative to bring in a pack of wolves into NE Washington. Note, like usual, they want them in someone else's land, though historically speaking wolves also lived in Western Washington (but we are a historically selective lot). Unforeseen only to the child, the wolves began to massacre the cattle. The ranchers were told to build better fences. I will leave to you to research the cost of fencing 250 acres. In meantime, another advocacy group pushed through an effort to bring in a herd of 100 Canadian Caribou. The wolves massacred them too and a few years later the last caribou got trapped and implanted into another herd back in Canada. Certainly the initiative was reported on initially. "Look at us, restoring this animal to its rightful home". The Seattleites ego's must have purred as they watched the nightly news. But not a squeak about the actual outcome. Only raging debates on fm/am radio waves well outside of Spokane.
    This is one of many examples. So, either consider the realities of the community, implement solutions that are at the expense of those voting for it, or let them go. Everything else is a power trip/abusive relationship.

Trump just tried to use it to steal an election, pull off a coup and install himself as dictator for life. So, the electoral college has become a danger to democracy and therefore it has to go.

    I really don't see an issue if they split off. Doesn't affect any Portlander's lives, except they won't have to subsidize EO anymore. What I haven't heard, though, is a good reason beyond "because we said so" on why Portlanders don't want them to be able to leave. Just sounds like a power trip. It's not like they have any respect for EO and think they're just podunk morons, like some other lovely individual in these comments said. So, why do you want to keep these podunk backwards people if you despise them so much? Just to have someone to hold power over? Are there any good legit reasons to keep them beyond "because we have the numbers?:

    • @renovatio1988
      @renovatio1988 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do not live in Oregon. Right now in my ignorance I think those 11 counties should be allowed to join Idaho. I do disagree with the Sheriff. Being arrested for cannabis does not help drug addicts. I am not sure if those counties have the three strikes law. If they do once they get that third strike the can not get any kind of help. Also last time a checked cannabis does not cause people to go crazy. Why is he confusing other drugs with cannabis. If a person buys weed and in that weed was something they did not want is it their fault? I'm still looking forward to hearing from someone official from Idaho. Any news about someone doing a formal report about Greater Idaho? I would like to see some numbers in black and white.

    Punishment does not help with addiction- rehabilitation is much more effective, so statewide money needs to be switched from law enforcement to treatment centers with medical detox available. Extended Medicaid covers treatment for drugs and alcohol and mental health or dual diagnosis treatment. Laws need to make sure that the providers take extended Medicaid, and the state needs to make sure that the doctors and treatment centers are provided for in a timely fashion.
