I must admit, you guys fell off my watch list for a while but since you headed northeast, my interest has changed dramatically. Loving catching up on your Scotland/Norway series. Equal best with RAN's PNW series in the past year (IMHO). Really appreciate the orientation you provide with maps and conversion of temperatures, terms, etc for non-Americans. Looking forward to your further episodes.
Aye m8's! First part, passing the island group of Vega was a thrill in the mist. Then - I was screaming straight out when you where at the island of Leka (with the chromium yellow cliffs), where I know most of the good places to navigate a vessel like yours, and some very rewarding fishing areas🎣, but you where in that dense fog! 😳 Which makes it not a little dangerous in those quarters… phew…! Then passing Rørvik, there is a lot of history from 10'000 years ago to be told here around. Thnx for sharing all these moments 🙏
Love the quality of your new Sionyx camera, and it very reasonably priced considering what you get when you buy it. Others cost a lot more for less overall. Now we will be receiving even better video from you, thank you for the past and the new future.
Those ruins on the hills looked totally intriguing! Would had been great to have seen more and know a bit about their back story. The sunset at the end was breath taking awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Hello great friends Matt and Jessica, when I first saw Matt holding the orange piece in his hand and telling us about the fog horn and the bird, two things came to my mind, maybe the bird thought you were telling it “foods here” , the other was I thought that the fog horn was powered by a gas cartridge and a much deeper sound, then I watched Matt start blowing on the thing with a very much higher noise, I just had to laugh. Sorry Matt, I guess that shows how much of a boater that I am, counting things that I have learned from you guys must be pushing over the hundreds, and that is a wonderful thing. I just love seeing you three boating with or sometimes without a sail and all the things you do to give us all those magical moments spent with you. How do you set up a menu when you are out sailing and at anchorage??? What has been your best favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner on the boat???
We got tired of trying to find replacement gas canisters for our air horn (it was over $50 in the Cayman Islands just for the refill cylinder) so thought this human powered version would be a good idea. It works, and it's loud, but the sound is a little funny :) Tacos is the answer for all options... well, maybe pizza too. We're very simple eaters and not that food oriented. Matt
Noting your vision challenges with the fog: Have you ever considered polarized yellow lenses? I've used them for about 20 years, and they are amazing! Oh, cute bird. Beautiful sunset at the end! Ahhh, thank you. :-)
Nice job, guys. That's a neat little camera. The color view compared to the monochrome a FLIR or a PVS-14 is nice. The sport version is $200 less than the sport FLIR and $2000 than the PVS-14. Not a bad deal. They should add a head harness to the explorer kit. Happy Anniversary!
Fog Horns - Viewers may or may not be aware, quite a few VHF Marine Radios include automatic and manual foghorn sounds, that are selectable for the vessel type, in their settings menus. It is a feature of the P.A. as long as an external loudspeaker is installed. Another cracking video, Happy (recent) Anniversary :-)
Ha, ha, ha..........................you guys should have been around back in the 1950's when I was fishing salmon with my dad off the Oregon coast. No radar, just a loran. I can remember having our heads on a swivel watching for other salmon trawlers sneaking up on you out of the fog.(back then there were two or three hundred boats in the immediate area) Some time's we wouldn't see each other until it was too late and we'd lock trolling poles with other boats. When that would happen someone's pole would break...........................................and it was NEVER the other guys!!! It was always ours!(:) Hey, when you get done gallivanting around the EU, ya need to come back to the Pacific side of the USA and sail up to Alaska, through Canada. It's beautiful................................Before I forget, you two have a Merry Christmas and a happy, safe New Year.
I suggest when you don't need perfect eyesight that you don't use any vision aids. 15 years ago I started doing this. My eyes have now totally corrected themselves. Music recommendations are great.
Did you guys happen to google those ruins you could see from the drone? So beautiful in Norway and you have been able to show us so much with the use of the drone. Most excellent.
We've come across things like that a few times. Foundations of stone structures which no longer exist. I think there are so many of them that most ruins would not be documented. ☹️
I was able to find a name on google maps, but after repeated searches, no data or information came up. I'm sure it's listed somewhere in Norwegian. Matt
Funny seagull! Too bad you have to leave Norway. What a beautiful place! We've thoroughly enjoyed your visit there. Would you mind giving us the info on your cockpit chairs? Leaving on a trip soon. Thanks!
The chairs are from a US company called Sport-a-seat. They've had new covers added, but they are from 2010, have lived outside their entire life, and are still working great. They aren't cheap, but the quality is well worth it. Matt
Your new camera seems to out do GOPRO. I remember using night vision scopes in the 60's turning my world GREEN. We certainly have come along ways. Better equipment enhances your and our experiences of your journey. Thank you for the up grade.
The fog reminds me of sailing Maine or out to Nantucket in the summer. On our boat, when we saw a fog bank heading our way, everyone new to put on fleece and foulies...it is amazing how cold it is in fog. Great video. Your videos (both the photography and incorporation of the music) are like art. Do either one of you have that kind of artistic training, or it just natural? I checked out the Aurora, and it looks like a nice piece of kit. Even for a coastal cruiser who has had to sail at night more than a few time (with a couple of scary incidents getting into a harbor (Nantucket after dark trying to find our mooring) this would be a great piece of safety equipment.
We've always just used a good set of binoculars at night, but the difference between analog and digital is truly night and day. We were given the upgraded model, but even the lower cost Sport looks to be a great option. Matt
I don't know how you manage to be with each other every single hour of every day without going mad. I love my wife but man am I happy when she goes and sees her siblings for the day and I can be alone. Hint: we are both retired. Time to get to a pub in Norway for some socializing . lol. Fair winds.
Before we left to go cruising, everyone made the same statement about being isolated with their spouse on a boat. But honestly, I think it's the part I enjoy the most about this lifestyle. It's going to be a real struggle when one day we have to get jobs that keep us apart for 8 hours a day. We may be a little codependent now :) Matt
Jess...I just read Matt's reply and that has to be one of the best anniversary gifts ever!! I'm divorced from a not so loyal hubby and can only dream of sailing around with a truly adorable and adoring crewmate! Good thing I'm up for the challenge of solo sailing but gotta say that this bit of loveliness brought tears to my eyes!! Happy New Year you lucky ducks! An old kid from Michigan, hoping to retire soon in Nashville and aiming for at least half of your destinations!!
As I watched this awesome video, it got me wondering what was the scariest situation that you ever encountered....the dense fog? Pirates? Equipment failure? First night sailing? I wondered.......
Your fog horn makes about the same sound that gulls make when they detect food. It probably thought you would feed it. Next time a seagull shits on you ,,, just remember the fog horn :-))
Haha, hey that was a pretty decent commercial. I know some folks complain but that's how you get toys and tools to be able to make these videos and money saved can go for cat food and diesel! Hey Matt, what is the hull covered with? Is it gray hull paint or clear epoxy or what?
Glad you liked our commercial!, haha. It is a debate on how much we should incorporate things like that...but we'll always only choose products we would already use without the sponsorship. It is sad though, the small amount Google pays out for ads within a video. Definitely not enough to sustain yourself unless you're a really big channel.
True and lots of folks have ad blockers so they never see an ad and I am sure YT/google can tell that and makes the view non-paying. As long as it comes off as sincere and relevant then I think people are mostly ok with it. If we start seeing lawn care items people might start doubting the honesty of the endorsement! I loved the drone shots of those ruins and really hope we see more from the Scotland videos!Fair winds.
Daniel, the hull is just bare aluminum. The oxidation that forms when marine grade aluminum is exposed to saltwater protects the underlying metal from corrosion. We like the work boat patina, but the dull uneven look isn't for everybody. Matt
matt johnson in fact aluminum reacts to form alumina, not with the water, but with the oxygen, in the atmosphere, or dissolved in the water, sea or fresh makes no difference.
Western Europe routinely has 4 seasons in one day. It is juist one of these things you get used to when you live there. That said, layering is key there.
Great job on the plug for SiOnyx! It was seamlessly incorporated into your video and I actually enjoyed watching it as part of your journey. I'll definitely check out the SiOnyx night vision camera. Thanks!
It's been fun to watch how your adventure has progressed. When I first started watching, you hardly had any subscribers, your camera and sound sucked and you were living in a marina dry dock. Glad to see your hard work pay off and allow you to see the places you want!
It has taken 3 months , but finally caught up with all your vids . I remember way back when Jess mentioned it was your 12th wedding anniversary ---- my first thought was , arrest that man . I honestly thought Jess was about 24 then . Matt , love your accent , and get that beautiful wife of yours back to a hot country . Missing those bikini shots . Great content and stay safe . Love to Georgi .
We're planning on heading back to the warm this summer. We thought we were going to do two Northern seasons in a row, but since we have the time, figure we mind as well break it up and come back up here 2021-22 after thawing out. Matt
Yachts must get hit by lightning now and then since you are often the highest thing about for miles, so how come you never hear of freshly fried sailors? I *guess* that the charge travels around the sails and mast because they are wet, and 'earths' itself to the sea?
Hangout in Florida or Panama- boat's get hit there all the time. We've been lucky so far, but have witnessed some really close calls to other boats. Matt
Hey Guys, just wanted to say hi and glad Ya'll are safe. How is the audio on the SiOnyx? I haven't seen any comments, nor did I hear anything about the audio in your cute little commercial (very well done btw). Is there an external audio port? I'm aware that you guys mainly use it for navigation but I was curious. Decently priced as well, especially if the audio compares to that of a Go Pro. Have fun, be safe and KEEP ON SAILIN ON! cheers RJ
I was very pleasantly surprised with how well it recorded audio. I wasn't exactly expecting much since that wasn't the primary driver for the device, but audio was clear, loud and did a good job with wind. A Gopro is a good comparison to this for audio. Matt
Who'da thunk it?!? I'd have sworn that was a moose call not a seagull call!!! LOLOLOL ;-D Edit to add: I liked your commercial too. Whenever y'all endorse a product I know you are doing it cuz it's good stuff NOT just for the $$$. I really liked how you made it more of a review showing us what a difference it makes for you, and how helpful it would be for cruisers, not just reading off a script. Nice job!!!
We're sorry to see you go, but with Google/TH-cam paying out so little on the pre-video ads, occasionally promoting a product we would use on our own is what helps us continue the journey.
MJ Sailing perhaps I was a little harsh, and premature. In hindsight I realise it’s a fine line between fulfilling your dreams, and the means to pay for it. While there are other channels that have sold their souls completely to google and TH-cam to fund their adventures, at least you have the decency to be ‘upfront’ about your reasons for promoting a particular product. Because your content, photography and sailing insight is so good of course I didn’t unsubscribe. Sorry for saying I did.
That sunset alone was worth the price of admission. Just breathtakingly beautiful.

Gotta love a well trained birdie ....next step is landing in the rigging with well aimed releases!

Are you setting the first careful steps considering another boat? :)
There's always going to be a 'next boat' on the horizon. 😉
Around 20 years ago I got fed up with contacts & glasses and had my eyes lasered. Recommended.
That Airhorn sounds a lot like the noise I make when I break an ankle or something.
Wow, where did you get the (fog) horn??
YIPPEE! first time ever being number 1! Always love watching you guys.
bo kendrick - ditto
Great video! I noticed you had both head sails out but not the main. Why not hoist the main as well? Just curious.........

Aww bugger I wanted to see the homemade Pizza
Nice vids from Norway! Do You skip the Swedish West Coast? There are some nice places here too ;-)
We would have loved to, but we started to run out of time and the season changed on us. We explain it all in about 3 episodes. 🙂
