We did actually consider staying in Norway for the winter, but we run into Visa issues, which is the number one reason we're in GB at the moment. Most of Europe is Schengen territory meaning we only get 90 days in within a 180 day period. With GB, we automatically get 180 days, and it is renewed by just leaving the country for a few days and coming back. Same kinda Wx we experienced up North in the Tromsø area. This is why we went with a motorsailer for Northern latitudes. We know from 4 trips to Alaska to you can sail but most often motoring or motorsailing is a he only way to go with the best tides nd currents for your daily passage.
Totally true! We were warned that we'd be motoring a lot around here, but thought that everyone was exaggerating and being dramatic :) I do wish we had invested in a code-0 on a furler before we made the trip North. -Matt
Code 0 is nice but still won’t help when every turn you make the wind is on your nose. IMHO the only sail that really could WORK is a self taking blade jib so you tack back and forth quickly (and effortlessly) as if going up a river. You won’t make great time and you will only have about 6 productive hours and even then you may still want the motor at about 1000 RPM. Sad realities of off the beaten track cruising. But look at it another way- sailboats are the best motorboats. Both our boats have exactly the same hull just vastly different modes of propulsion.
@@vraymond108 Yup.... and why we typically just put the main up, centered and flip the engine on :) What motorsailor did you buy? There were a few beautiful Dutch steel Noordkaper's that caught my eye in the area. -Matt

Arktika has been around the world already above the Arctic circle except around Greenland so essentially the Northeast and Northwest passages. Both hulls are 12mm plate. for the sides and 15 for the bottom. Joubert design built with the Strongall method from the Meta yard in Tarare France. It is where Bernard Moitissier had his famous spray hull Joshua welded. Of course his was steel and now they are mostly aluminum. Peter Smith designer of the Rocca anchor did the interior for our sailboat which has a swing keel but only 1000 liters of fuel. I could send you some pictures if you have bandwidth.

Got a question. At about 2:45 in the video your tiller is in the raised position and I don't see any manual or electronic device holding it in place. How is your rudder staying in the straight forward position? As always, really enjoyed the video from the shore of Saginaw Bay. BTW, No Ice here Yet!
The hydraulic linear drive is in the lazerette and connects to the rudder shaft just like in a wheel steered boat. It's also how the Cape Horn windvane is connected too (there is a video from the beginning showing the install). -Matt
I'm hooked on this and love that it's used at the end of these videos. I've come to associated them together. I've looked but it isn't on Spotify. How much in a hurry are you? The Finnish archipelago would be really something to experience, but not until summer (July more or less). Why not even Finnish and Swedish inland waters (through Saimaa and Göta channels).
I feel silly asking the two of you this... (as experienced sailors). I've not heard you mention "Predict Winds App" before. Do you use another way for your travel plans? Thanks and I truly enjoy your sailing lifestyle😁
We don't use Predict Wind since there is a fee for their service. Instead, we use the free Windy site and GRIB files in OpenCPN's weather routing program to figure out when and where to be. Oh yeah, and a good dose of luck :) -Matt
Lot of sailors use Predict Wind, which is nice especially if you get it with part of Iridium Go package. But yea it is not free. Windy is a good free one, as is earth.nullschool.net. I am sure there are several others as well.
There is no deterioration from the state that we purchased her in. The aluminum was pitted when we bought the boat, and we replaced about 50 sqft of plating, but there still remains spots of corrosion that weren't bad enough to justify cutting out and replating (75% thickness remaining). These spots haven't gotten worse so we'll just continue to monitor them. -Matt
God always answers our prayers. Sometimes yes, sometimes no and other times wait. There is a fourth and dangerous answer, and it is very scary as God has a sense of humor, and this comes in the form of "If you insist". I tell you this to spare you the outcome of this one. Many years ago I had a problem with alcoholism. Having joined a 12 step program, and attending countless meetings, I noticed the speakers always coming back to a common theme of learning to be pious and humble. Being a deeply afflicted victim of the disease, I couldn't wait to become a speaker so I could share how humility had become the cornerstone of my substantial 1 year plus of sobriety. Every day I prayed for God to make me an instrument of His will, and make me humble. I was serious about this to the point of demanding that it happen through my earnest prayers. Well the opportunity finally arrived, and someone approached me about being the main speaker at their weekly meeting. It was my great chance to show the world how humble and pious I had become. One of the largest meetings in our city, attended by well over a hundred people every week, and I was to be in the spotlight. I checked myself with my sponsor who only asked me one question. Are you sincere in all that you have asked of God in healing your soul? The answer, so I thought was absolutely YES. So I accepted the speaking task. The big night arrived. I got showered, and even used after shave. Dressed in the finest clothes I owned and even got a fresh haircut and shave at the Barbers. I arrived early to the meeting as was expected and even made sure to curb my normal foul mouthed language in order to appear as Holy as possible. The meeting began with the normal routine and it was time for the secretary to introduce me as the speaker. That done, I stood to begin my talk as I had been taught to do. My whole body turned into one big stomach cramp from nerves, and I was overwhelmed with an irresistible urge to fart. It hit so suddenly that it just had to come out. It did, and it was loud and very stinky. In one moment God had granted my prayers. I learned true humility in a way I could never have expected. Right in front of all the very same people I had hoped to impress. Remember... Yes, No, Wait.... and "If You Insist"! If it seems that weather is not going your way. That is God telling you to wait. I strongly suggest you don't push for "If You Insist". God has a sense of humor.

Some folks can't have anything nice, because they don't take care of things. I can't have a nice girl like Jessica, because i yell at them when the boat breaks. Hey, recognizing my flaws is part of the problem solving process!! hahaha
Really enjoyable, as always, with the added fun of name spotting!
Is that new? I haven't seen it done before, so am I unobservant or is this the first time? Anyway, it's good fun to spot them! I have watched twice now to see if I missed any
I got 5
The name spotting is a new Patreon benefit we've just rolled out and started incorporating it in videos since Ep 131. Usually about 4-5 names an episode as we're currently going through the list of long time Patrons first. 😉

Nice episode. Interesting they can keep the lobsters outside in a tank. What do they do in winter?
That's a good question!
Eat them.... :-)
-Matt
@@mattjohnson6716 Wow, guess I missed that video. Will check it out. tanx
Olhos lindo de rainha
I looked for your great theme song Pandemonium at Spotify, but I don't find it. Could you tell Mondays to publish it there?
I'm hooked on this and love that it's used at the end of these videos. I've come to associated them together. I've looked but it isn't on Spotify. This is a cover of the Monday's song (the original is a faster tempo) by Hanna Stone and I've only found the full version of the cover on TH-cam, th-cam.com/video/tp1zhEEJxew/w-d-xo.html
We get it through Epidemic Sound, I'm not sure if it's available through other sites?
UK, and Baltic countries in winter, bugger
How much in a hurry are you? The Finnish archipelago would be really something to experience, but not until summer (July more or less). Why not even Finnish and Swedish inland waters (through Saimaa and Göta channels).
Georgie is an International Grass Connoisseur,,,,just plain lawn grass....not the other kind.....
The best grasses in all the lands. 😺
Oh yeah, and a good dose of luck :)
-Matt
Lot of sailors use Predict Wind, which is nice especially if you get it with part of Iridium Go package. But yea it is not free. Windy is a good free one, as is earth.nullschool.net. I am sure there are several others as well.
Hope you guys can do Denmark and the Netherlands. Not to sure how far behind these videos are but if possible, do a Meetup with Mads from Sail Life!
This video is from late August...we make sure to put a time stamp at the beginning with the map. 🙂
@@MJSailing how on Earth did I miss that!?! Haha
Northern passage to the Pacific?
Hope your salty enough😎
Still too much to see on this side first. 😉
@@MJSailing ok, sounds good!
Have you watched "The Vikings" show on the History Channel. Its all about the part of the country that you in.
Not yet, but it's on our list for this winter! HBO show I think? Showtime? One of them we need special access to.
MJ Sailing We found it on Amazon Prime.
Actually, it is not filmed here.
There is no Norwegian locations in The Viking series, the parts that might look like it is filmed in Ireland.
Gosto muito deste lindo casal maraviloso principalmente está linda modelo atriz bailarina muito linda e muito boa
Which hiking shoes do you recommend?
I used the store brand from Decathalon, and they worked great for me. Just a nice waterproof shoe. 😊
@@MJSailing Tbank you
Stay in Norway, meet up with RAN sailing...
We were hoping to have the chance to cross paths with them. 😀
Matt I would like to ask a question how is the hull on your boat doing is the alum ok.
-Matt
I had a great time in The Netherlands, BUT!!! If you go there don't refer to them as "The Nether Regions," they hate that
You poor people, always wind straight on the nose. :)
“Pandemonium” is readily available in TH-cam.
Mike Blanda????
It's a Patreon benefit we offer...hiding your name in an episode. 😉
@@MJSailing ok thanks. Nice. Love your videos. Hope to see you in Denmark soon.
Man, I do not envy these weather-based decisions.
