Thank you for providing interesting historical information and showing fantastic structures and boats in your splendid videos. Your music choices are superb.
Thank you Matt and Jessica. My wife and I love watching y'all and just finished watching from start to finish again. Y'all gave my wife the energy again. After 18 year's of teaching Kindergarten, she is finally ready to start our adventures. We just bought a Hunter 37 a few weeks ago. We are about to side y'all some money, it's not a lot. But with us saving everything to put in the boat, we just wanted to send yall a little to say thank you for the motivation and allowing us in to a small part of y'all's life. Thank you
Hi Jessica and Matt It’s Saturday here in Camas WA. I’m sitting in my warm house as the rain seems to never stop. Watching your new episode makes the day just fine. Your episodes are always interesting and so well done. Be well and safe.. Jessica your voice is a true pleasure to listen to.
I was fortunate enough to visit the KM boatbuilders in Makkum a few months ago, the builders of the Besteaver range. They were outstandingly hospitable and I was given a tour of their latest 45 and the big arctic going yachts they are building. Their boats are simply superb.
Price tags as impressive as the build, but totally worth it if you have the budget! I dream of owning one. Are you thinking of going that direction? Matt

First of all, Happy (belated) Birthday to Jessica!! Looked like a delicious birthday meal with a satisfying beer. Stones and a castle, what a fun episode. I haven't been in many castles (Hearst Castle in Cambria California, Edinburgh, London) but they intrigue me and what it must have been like to live in one. So much effort on our behalf with the drone. Glad you dodged that bullet when the drone went crazy. I have had several drone scares over the last several years owning one (crashed a couple times but never lost one, yet, fingers crossed). The last was in the Sierra back country with my brother. We decided to use the drone to recon a stream on the far side of the lakes we were kayaking. I started with a full battery and preplanned to start returning with 2/3 battery left. The stream was 2 miles away. So I got there and got some good shots and started back (all over water). Unfortunately the collision avoidance feature (Mavic Pro) has a tendency to interpret the sun as an obstacle...and the sun was directly in the direction back. So I had to tack back and forth so it wasn't facing the sun. The problem was that this used more battery coming back than it had going. It was beginning to look like I was going to lose the drone in the water and my heart was pounding like crazy. Fortunately I got it down with a couple percent of battery! Lessons learned. Great episode and terrific scenery and shots.
Scapa Flow has been talked about in my history many moons ago. I am so happy that you Jessica and Matt have had a chance to experience this Nordic historical sight. the north's men came from places such as these and founded Dublin, Ireland, my home country.
Wow! So beautiful 😍 Shame about the cold and rain, but after all, it’s what the UK is known for 😉 Happy belated bday 😊 I can see why it took you so much time to edit this one. It paid off though - it was a great watch! x
Jessica, just like my kids, complaining about the cold/wind with a hood lying on your back! 😑 Great video, fun to watch travels to places I’ve yet to see (which is most of them.) Keep up the good work! 😎👍🏻
Fabulous video of Orkney and its historic sites, maybe you missed or did not include a visit to Scara Brae, the Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel perhaps some of the most interesting sites on the island. Keep up the great work. Regards...John
We did hit a few more spots that you mentioned, but either had microphone issues or didn't get that great of film. Oh well, we got the experience for ourselves :). Matt
Hi Guys, I think you mentioned a while back that you were intending to make it to Plymouth, if you do dont forget to include Dartmouth and Salcombe, both quite close to Plymouth and I think you would enjoy them.
I have just seen the last video from Dellos. Diving with blue sharks on the azores. It lokke like they have found a way around the Schengen ruls so you can stay as long as you like :-)
If those folding bikes become troublesome, might I suggest the Zizzo Via folding bikes. They have a lot of stainless on them, and are pretty light with an aluminum frame. Also yes, best boat cat ever.
This was a wonderful video visit. So few capture the splendor of the northern latitudes. Scapa Flow and its history are so exciting. Thank you for taking us along. Happy Trails PS That is one very cool cat!
Never seen a cat on a leash. Lol. Pretty cool. Well yesterday I started looking for boats. I will be joining the community soon. It's time to take the splash and sail away
I’m British and cannot understand why you visit our cold climate. But as it’s new to you I realise your curiosity, we have loads of history here in the uk. I live in East Yorkshire near the North Sea, horrible brown water, yuck. Bahamas all the way xx lots of love both
MJ Sailing yes we live in a very lush and green place but that’s because it rains so much. Lol, fully understand your sense of adventure you certainly live life to the full so does Georgie girl. My 18 year old Persian cat is winding down with age, nothing specific wrong with her except she is just old, although still eating and drinking but rest of time asleep, bless her she is the sweetest cat so gentle. Sad but she is loved and gently cared for, electric heat pad under dear her blanket. 😥 xxx
Thanks for showing us around. The Orkney's are beautiful. A guy I use to work with took a vacation there to dive on SMS Karlsruhe II. He liked it so much, he quit his job and went back to school to be certified to work in the UK. Then he moved there. How's the heater holding up?
Great video...I love the Orkneys...they have sheep there that feed on seaweed ! Marine life of a different kind ;-) Is that Bestevaer the "Zenith"? Pity you couldn't do a tour...would have loved to have a closer look...I love that whole bestevaer-range with the straight bow...wish there was a sailing channel that sailed around on one...unfortunately I heard KMY is going to put the models with the straight bow in the freezer and focus more on the models with the S and C-shapes in the nearby future...
I can't imagine KM would discontinue the line since the order list doesn't seem to be slowing down and Hoek already dominates the spoon bow market. That would be a huge shame 😣. Matt
matt johnson yeah i don't know what to make of it either, but that's what kmy anounced themselves on a facebookpost of 28 august 2019 (i looked it up but can't link it now) about the bestevaer II. Apparently they only get orders for bestevaer straight bows and they want to build more bestevaer spoonbows and cutters again...it's hard to imagine they would turn away potential customers though...and i'd love to see more fifty threes...the lines on that model are esthetically very pleasing.
From their web site: Bestevaer was a nickname given to Michiel Adriaanszoon De Ruyter, one of the important Dutch admirals of the seventeenth century. The crew loved their captain and called him ‘Beste Vaeder’ (best father), which was then shortened to Bestevaer. The word Vaer also means sailor, seafarer. An interesting read is the story of the Imperial German High Sea's Fleet, all 58 ships scuttled by the crews in the aftermath of the Great War at Scapa Flow
Just for info - a minor point - 'Maeshowe' is pronounced as 'Maize' like latin for sweetcorn genus, and 'How' in How do you do.... A 'howe' is a north British word for a hollow or dip...

At the end of WW1after Germany surrendered. The German naval fleet of 74 ships were held in Scapa Flow by the British Navy, on the 21st of June 1919 the Germans began scuttling the entire fleet, to stop the British taking over the fleet. In the end over 50 ships sank to the bottom, many have been raised and cut up for scrap, others are still visible where they sank in shallower water.
Belated happy birthday, fascinating video, I never made it that far north in my 3 1/2 years living in the UK, although I did go surfing in the far north of Scotland. The megalithic structures, cairns, quoits and henge's are prolific in the Celtic parts of the UK, particularly the South West (where I lived for a few years) generally they were built as astrological timepieces, ceremonial burial sites and pagan ritual feasts and festivals, and after much in depth research I am led to believe that they were built by the nephilim hybrid giants spoken of in Genesis Ch 6 KJV Holy Bible and the book of Enoch. Another theory, and a very plausible one is that they were electromagnetic power stations based on Tartarian knowledge of free electromagnetic energy, later resurrected by one Nikola Tesla in his Wardencliffe experiments. They remain very interesting and as yet unexplained (by modern science) structures. Look forward to your next episode
i fully concur on ur observation "reasonable restaurant rates",,, living in norway myself im embarrassed to take foreign friends out for dining or drinks,,, but then, our (median) salaries are the highest in the world
Our stereo is horrible! I planned on installing a good one this time, but boat a marine brand called Fusion since it worked with our chartplotter in the cockpit. It barely drives our 50 watt speakers and needs an amp... Not happening. Oh well, next boat :). Matt
@@tomshively5419 I no longer have the money, electrical power, or will to invest the effort for a good system, so our stereo will always be pretty basic. Next time I'll just get a car stereo and call it good. Our marine head unit was designed for a power boat with 1000 watt amps and subs with the primary goal to annoy the anchorage not provide good quality sound. Oh yeah, the 4x50 watt head unit is wired in series to two speakers attempting to properly drive the speakers, but they are still underpowered and tinny.
I'm delighted to see we got a mention of Twatt in the map opening sequence. I've replayed the last scene several times to try and figure out exactly what the Viking graffiti was, and failed... can anyone enlighten me, politely?
Those stones have a lot of history and myths over the ages. I think the were old when the Vikings first sailed around those parts. The stones are "cairns" are calendars of sorts - astronomical and solar and seasonal calendars and so much more. THIS GUY, did a lengthy series on the "stones", not rolling - yet Standing with Stones, from the tip of Northern Scotland the the south, in North Africa! -- going backwards, in backwards in time -- The Scottish Isles | Part 7 of 'Standing with Stones' (long intro) th-cam.com/video/M7PLubBz6Is/w-d-xo.html Scotland | Part 6 of 'Standing with Stones' th-cam.com/video/M7PLubBz6Is/w-d-xo.html
Aye m8's, Hmm… drone wasn't in best shape. On the other hand - what drones does is a tough and weary job. I'm looking forward to share anchorage some time. ⚓ (Probably have said that before, but what the hey?)
Viking graffiti in Maeshowe is a little more classy than modern efforts...."Ingigerth is the most beautiful of all women", although the guide will always point out the expletive example, it gets the customary giggle!
You poor dears! Raise your seat posts so that your knees are only slightly bent when the balls of your feet are on the lowest position of the pedals. This will add miles to your endurance.
Unfortunately that is the max height of the seat post. I'm not sure if this model was sold in different sizes, but if it was, this isn't the one for us :). Matt
Ok, so you are not divers? What? Doing what you do, basically missing half of it. Now I understand why of this trip. It's different from others, but element one is sailing, element two is underwater and last is beaches/land/cities. You need me as a online manager.

Cool video..I'm glad you were able to retrieve Georgie from the rocks!! Do you guys have a nice stereo aboard?
Our stereo is horrible! I planned on installing a good one this time, but boat a marine brand called Fusion since it worked with our chartplotter in the cockpit. It barely drives our 50 watt speakers and needs an amp... Not happening. Oh well, next boat :). Matt
@@mattjohnson6716 I don't know Matt the sound of water to me is almost hypnotizing lol..what would an upgrade cost? I do love your musica!!
@@mattjohnson6716 maybe some high quality headphones, but either way you guys are thriving I think! Good luck with everything Matt!!
I wonder if there is a connection between Balfour Castle and Arthur Balfour (the Balfour Declaration)?
I'm delighted to see we got a mention of Twatt in the map opening sequence.
I've replayed the last scene several times to try and figure out exactly what the Viking graffiti was, and failed... can anyone enlighten me, politely?
several attempts later 'healthy .... something ... something ... fornicated'... ? not sure what, though.

Hurricane Dorrian, before Christmas...
Christmas in Gosport or Plymouth with UMA
Question. Today? Portugal or past the Gibraltar gap?
Plymouth until April. Uma is here and we've spent some time with them, but we are currently in the Canaries off the boat for some sun. Matt
Might be that the Gulf Stream flowed farther north 1,500 years ago than it does now.
The Orkney's, where my ancestors come from.
Aye m8's, Hmm… drone wasn't in best shape. On the other hand - what drones does is a tough and weary job.
I'm looking forward to share anchorage some time. ⚓ (Probably have said that before, but what the hey?)
New Tender?
Left Indiantown with that one. 🙂
Did you "remember" or did the Mavic refuse to fly?
We turned it on and it gave us the message that we could not fly. 😉
Too bad that you couldn’t film inside, at least we could see the entrance and the engravings on the wall.
I probably could have tried to be sly about it with the GoPro, but I just wouldn't feel right about it, haha.
Why are there people’s names that appear in small type hidden within the video??
It's one of our Patreon benefits. You get your name hidden within an episode 😉.
:)
Viking graffiti in Maeshowe is a little more classy than modern efforts...."Ingigerth is the most beautiful of all women", although the guide will always point out the expletive example, it gets the customary giggle!
I want a puffin: 6:11
We just want to see one that close! 😀

Matt
@@mattjohnson6716 Before you condemn the bikes,I would suggest locating a bicycle shop and see if you can resolve the problem.
about 50 ww1 german naval ships were scuttled by the germans at scapa flow ..
I see there no shortage of makeup on the boat
😑
Ok, so you are not divers? What? Doing what you do, basically missing half of it. Now I understand why of this trip.
It's different from others, but element one is sailing, element two is underwater and last is beaches/land/cities. You need me as a online manager.
