This is a REVIEW of the Panasonic 24-105mm f4 Lens for the L-Mount Alliance and Panasonic S1 camera system. (Lumix S1H) . As i've said time and time again, glass, glass, glass, glass, glass. Glass is super important if you know what you're doing with it. This lens is "okay", it's not going to move the world but I was able to get very good results with it.

Useless lens. It didn’t pass the wind tunnel test.
It’s actually an extremely close focusing macro lens too. Picked it up when I found out that the new 70-200 F2.8 doesn’t have OIS. Making this the better video lens.
What an unfortunate title... Panasonic 24-105 definitely does not suck! Yeah, it's a little expensive, because it's really damn good! Even the 20-60 kit lens is damn good! The Panasonic system is so underrated,don't know why... I've tried a lot of brands,including the overhyped Fuji and its lenses (even the most expensive ones). So far I have been most satisfied with Panasonic! I encourage everyone to give this brand a try! You will not be disappointed! 😉

panasonic is a newcomer among professionals, and they are conservative and equipped with traditional brands, I also have panasonic and I am satisfied

This lens is good for hand-held filmmaking on the new Pana 'S' cameras. The autofocus is decent on the S1 and the dual stabilisation is great to have too. Handholding it is easy too, very light and the zoom and focus rings are buttery smooth. To finish, the hood is probably the easiest to fit hood I ever experienced. Great Vid Jarid, love those LR Presets!
I got this lens brand new on amazon today for $750US inclusive of delivery. The moment I bought mine, I went back to check just out of curiosity, and the price went back up to approx $1240US!
What about the parafocal, focus breathing and stabilisation and macro capabilities of this lens? Do the other two competitors offer these same capabilities? I would pay 300 extra for it if they don't...

I’ve used a bunch of lenses and have noticed that even over the same focal range different lens designs have Different signatures. From an artistic point of view, i really like the signature of the 24-105 which reminds me a lot of my leica gear. I think for the price, it is actually cheap, if you’re looking for that look. If all you want is a focal range, cheap works. If you are looking for artistic expression, I think you need to look beyond just the specs and look at the images themselves.
Jared, I know it's personal preference but imo your editing always makes your pictures look a little cartoon like.

Not a pro here, but I did some researches lately around the LLLLL MOUNT ALLIANNNCE (love it btw xD). It seems that the panasonic lens has built in image stabilizer, is weather sealed and has better/faster autofocus than Sigma lenses for the L-Mount. Can't tell the differences to the canon lenses though.
Old post I know but just got a used one for $400. Take into account that most Panasonic gear plummets in value not too long after release...unlike any other brand. Leads to crazy value buys.

I know this is years old. But the canon version here in Canada is $1750 and the the Panasonic is $1250. $500 cheaper! Not sure what changed?!
I totally get the multiple references to the value proposition, but this viewer is completely interested in the dual OIS, which is not available in the less expensive lenses mentioned several times. Fun stuff, keep it up

Keep in mind, you get this lens for $900 if you purchase WITH the S1. That’s a $400 savings and makes is cheaper than the Canon RF.

Matej Varga Yes but this is about LUMIX S1, S1R, S1H owners like myself...not Canon. I bought the package deal with the 24-105 and I saved. So your post is not relevant.

The 24-70 2.8 is supposed to ship this week although I have found this 24-105 F4 to be excellent. Sometimes though, you just need 2.8.

I know this video is 4 years old, but I just recently bought this lens brand new for $997.99 before tax on Amazon through the Panasonic Store. Certainly, price is no longer an issue.

I wouldn't buy this lens off the shelf for that price, but S1 kit came with that lens and a V-Log key for $2,999.00 USD (summer sale pricing) so I'm happy.
Hey Jared! Nice review, but stop horsin' around with the price! Obviously, if one gets the S1 or S1R with this 24-105 f/4 as a "kit", you're no longer paying $1300 for it, right? Thanks for showing us how sharp and detailed images obtained with this lens and camera combo are! It would also be nice to show an image using the "High Resolution Mode" of these cameras.
I ordered (January 2024) a S5ii, 24-70 f4 and 85 f1.8 for £2199 GBP
Not having a "pro" on it usually just means that it's not weather sealed and slightly less solidly built. The optics are usually pretty much the same.
Totally agree on the vignette thing. It looks weird when you remove it in post.

Yes you want that OIS, the IBIS is not enough for good stable videos
For a "kit" lens it's well built and a high performer. I think it's supposed to serve as a benchmark for what an actual "pro" lens could further achieve for the L-mount. Just my 2c! Thanks for the review!
Hey man! Love my S1 - just a question. When you shot these - did you more or less use Auto - ISO?
Both the S1 and the S1r are fantastic cameras but let’s be real. The only great thing about the L mount alliance is when Jared says it. It was a Rick James slap in the face to not allow af-c with an mc-21 adapter.
It may be fine together with the S1, but when using the S1R the 24-105 f4 is not able to handle the higher resolution. I also have a Sigma 24-104 f4 EF and using it on the S1R with the Sigma EF to LLLLLLLL mount adapter this lens is producing just sharper images once you crop in to the image . . . And I guess this is the reason why the Panasonic 24-105 f4 is not a "Pro" lens.
That is not the reason for the omission of 'pro' in the Lumix 24-70 f4, there are many other 'pro' labelled Lumix lenses testing with less resolution.
I have owned the Panasonic S1 and this lens since a week or two after they both were released. To this day, the 24 to 105 is the only lands I own, but will likely trade it in for the 24 to 70 on day one. I have used this lens a lot for video and for a lot of outdoor sports like volleyball and baseball photography where I can go anywhere I want. I think the lenses great.
However, now that it's getting closer to Winter we have transitioned to shooting more indoor sports, including bowling once. Not having f 2.8 was a real hardship in that situation because the lighting was so wildly inconsistent.
Lens monopoly pricing..? Now lets see a test of the Sigma 24-105 on a 24mp Nikon/Canon to see what the difference is, if any, other than price. The S1 is a superb camera, very much needing a wider lens range to make a proper system.

I would like to see some reviews on Rokinon lenses. I like their prices but not sure about the quality. I have two reasons to hesitate on shelling out big money on lenses. One, it's a hobby and I don't make a living of my camera and the other is, I'm married. Now try to explain to the wife that I shelled out say $1,400 on a lens.
I have both S1 and A7r3, I just prefer the Lumix images so slightly every time.
Why? How do these compare in aspects like colour and sharpness?

It is considerably less as part of the kit and why do you discount the stabilization that allows for slower shutter speeds and more light?
Hello, thanks for the review. What is the thing on the hotshoe , is that a flash, a remote for a flash, a microphone?
It records the output from the HDMI so you can see what he sees thru the evf including info overlays etc.

@@Ira88881 No, but if you are using the Panasonic / Lumix camera it offers in-body stabilization. Some of Sigma lenses do have stabilizaion.

Currently if you buy it as kit lens with Lumix S5 the lens will cost 850 € in my country.

As the time goes, there is still no Sigma Art 24 to 105 for L mount. Does it mean that this lens is still a good choice for this range and money?
I think Sigma is focusing more on the new DGDN prime lenses at the moment...

Hey Jared should i get canon 24-105mm f4 or the tamron 70-200mm f2.8 the old one with out the vc on my aps-c camera im trying to make it jn photography portrait and some street photography and some videos here and there right now i only have the 18-55 kit and im low on money so i need to pick something up wisely

At and right near 24 and 105, the lens vignettes at f4. Stop down even just one stop and it’s (supposedly) gone.
I love my GH5, and want a S1... but it's all about the lenses. And they're just not there yet, either in variety or cost. Part of the appeal of MFT is the huge variety of native lenses, and the ability to adapt just about everything else. The L mount 180 degrees different. Oddly enough, Canon seems to be really upping their game regarding RF lenses and their nearly perfect EF adapter. Panny's efforts seem a bit lacklustre by comparison. That might be completely different story by the end of 2020, but right now it's a deal-breaker.
Gotta disagree the price of m43 lenses is sometimes more or barely less than ff lenses.
Hi Jared, sorry for being late to the party with this comment but I've recently bought a Panasonic S5II and so far have got an f.18 18mm, 50mm, 80mm, an f3.5-5.6 20-60mm and an f4.5-6.3 70-300mm for it but I am looking at this f4 24-105mm lens. It's currently at a not so expensive price on Amazon plus Panasonic are giving cash back after the purchase. It's still a tough choice to either buy this lens for around £900 (yes I'm from the UK) or just invest in another camera body with cheaper and more varied lens options such as maybe a Fuji X-S20. Which reminds me, what do you have against the "L-mound alliance"?
Hi I just ordered S5ii, 24-105 f4 with 85 f1.8 from Wex for £2199. The sales guy did try and sell me the 20-60, 50 and 85 kit for £2099 but I know what I wanted and need 😊
@@nocturnal1970 Nice choice and I'm sure you will be happy with it, I love mine. I did buy the 24-105 f4 and I find that is the lens which is on the camera most of the time and gives me the best working range for my photography. I have also bought the 18, 24, 35, 50 and 85 primes so have got the full set of f1.8 lumix primes apart from the recently released 100mm f2.8 macro. I have the 20-60 kit lens and the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 lumix lens so the only lens I'm still looking for is the Sigma 60-600mm f4.5-6.3 DG DN Sport but at £1,999 it's not a priority.
@@pipnmaz Thanks, I'm looking at the 60-600 also as well as 150-600 but I think the 60 has better AF motors and is slightly better optically again, but 2x the price of the 150-600! Also later looking at the new Sigma 14mm f1.4 for Milky Way nightscapes etc.
However that is for later times and I'm really looking forward to the 85mm f1.8 as I've never had one of these.
I'm coming from Pentax APSC so it's a huge jump in technology nevermind to full frame. I've done a lot of 35mm film photography and still have those, have all the darkroom equipment also. 😎
@@nocturnal1970 I came from a Canon Ixus 105 to a Lumix FZ330 bridge camera to dip my toe in, then to the S5II once I decided I would enjoy photography and wanted a little more flexibility and quality than the FZ330. The jump in features and quality for me was probably even bigger than for you and as I said I couldn't be happier with my choice of the Lumix S5II.
@@pipnmaz Yeah you're jump was a lot bigger but it's great you bought into a great system to help your photography. I already had several lenses costing £1000+ and still got my top Pentax F*300 f4.5 prime which has stellar optics to use with the S5ii, no AF with the S5ii but I'm used to MF and apparently the S5ii is excellent for MF.
No one is buying this lens individually. The S1 cameras just came out. As it kit lens it about $900 and seems like a great option for most people just starting with them..which would be everybody?

Sadly the sigma art will be a rehash of the DSLR version and thus have a motor issue preventing accuracy in AF-C and slower AF... annoyingly the L mount alliance isnt producing what we expected when we bought into the system.
not to mention 2 inches of adapter welded to the end of it.

Thing is, there is no Sigma zoom lenses in the roadmap of the L-mount alliance. Sigma will deliver primes which still is a good thing but yes could be considered an excuse not to kill off the sells of Panasonic zoom lenses....
There is already an 14-24 sigma zoom for L-Mount and I'm pretty sure there will be an 70-200 f2.8 next spring.

Too much noise in your pictures. Just shows how weak F4 is. Maybe for pictures it's fine, but for video that's very slow.

Hello Fro'. As you have used the new S1 and the new Sony mirrorless v3 here is my question.
The Sony mirrorless are very well known to be prone to have loads of dust on the sensor pretty quickly. How does cope the L-mount counterpart in this regard ?
So they get dust? All cameras i've used get dust. You wont see dust at 2.8 or 5.6 for that matter. It's a non starter.

It think this is your only option if you want OIS as well as the IBIS right? You look at the “pro” lenses and none of the have the OIS. Some people with shakes jelly hands take pictures too 🤣
