    A great all around lens. I have a 24-105mm for my Sony A9, had a 24-120mm for my Nikon system before I switched to mirrorless systems; and I have the LUMIX 24-105mm for my L mount cameras. I’ll take a 24mm or 50mm (or 85mm) prime for low light when we travel; but the 24-105mm stays attached to my camera most of the time.
    Enjoy your lens, and great video!

This lens works amazingly in reality. .

      Ignore all of the technical mumbo-jumbo - It means nothing in real life to me! As long as it produces clean images with great colour, that's all that matters! Granted it's not the sharpest lens to have ever existed in the world, but it's definitely sharp enough for all of my paid work and i've never had anyone say otherwise :)

    I opted to buy the 24-105 rather than the kit 20-60 when I got my S5 recently. It’s just such a flexible focal range. For me the 20 isn’t wide enough that I wouldn’t still want an ultrawide (I also got the 16-35f4) and 60 would be frustratingly short as a general purpose walk around lens. I plan to get a couple of primes for low light work, but I’m really happy with the 24-105 😃

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree with you here. The 20-60 is a great lens, but I get a lot more use from the focal lengths above 60mm so the 24-105 was a no brainer. I'm also in the market for a 16-35 or something similar, so it sounds like we're on the same wavelength!

    I have just ordered this lens for my Lumix S5II after much deliberation I decided I had to due to the reviews of how good this lens is and seeing a great deal for the lens at Wex. It won't be my first lens as I bought the S5II with a kit 20-60 f3.5-f5.6 and 50mm f1.8. I've also already bought the 18mm f.8, 85mm f1.8 and 70-300mm f4.5-f5.6 so I think the 24-105mm f4 should be a nice addition as although it overlaps some mof the lenses I already have it will be very convenient and versatile to have as a lightweight travel setup.

    I wouldn't call the focus breathing "minimum" for the lens 24-105. Not at all. It is there quite sigificant. I still like the lens in any case though but you have to bee careful when you not are "in a move" at all. When moving....it's not a problem but ex.during an interviu I would strongly recomend to shut the autofocus/tracking mode Off.

  • @angelisone

    Hate to say this but the 24-105/4.0 is a common slow lens that many people buy.
    Unfortunately, it's 24-105/2.0 or at least 24-105/2.8 would be nice for amateur photographers.
    It's best buying just the camera body, ATG H/Ps adapter & use Hasselblad CF lenses.
    With the full information on the CF lenses, one can actually shoot & nail the shot much faster than relying on AF lenses!

  • @raksh9
    @raksh9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I started shooting video in 2011, it was with the 5D Mark II and the 24-105. It's such a versatile focal length range. When I left Canon for Panasonic m43 in 2013, there was no decently fast equivalent lens with that range. The fastest was the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8, which has a f5.6 equivalent aperture and no way near as long as the old Canon. Recently I got a Speedbooster, which allows me to use the 24-105 again. If/when I go into L mount, the 24-105 will be on the list.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the 24-105 range is definitely something I think a lot of photographers/videographers sleep on because of the F4 aperture, but if you buy into the L Mount system, you'll see how amazing these bodies are for lowlight, so the F4 really isn't limiting at all!

      @raksh9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshCameron Today, I shot a stills job with my old 5D Mark II and 24-105, and was surprised how versatile and 'right' it felt to be able to zip through that zoom range. There's a good deal on a secondhand S1 near me, a few hundred less than a new S5, so I'm super tempted. I look at the S1 as a G9 on steroids, which is fine by me.

    Hi Josh. I run a few comparable sized TH-cam channels to yourself. I upload daily and it's now becomes my job.
    Before I talk about the camera I just wanted to say that I really like your channel and in particular your friendly nature in front of camera. I wish you the very best of luck.

      The 24-105 will be just fine for vlogging. It won't give you the widest frame, but 24 for me is wide enough to get my face, arms and shoulders in a standing shot :)
      I do indeed get commission from the Amazon links, so using them will help me out greatly and I'd really appreciate it!

    I'm primarily a portrait photographer with a fondness for pulled-back shots that show the whole person, and I shoot MFT currently so even with a wide aperture like 1.4 I still don't get the greatest bokeh on pulled-back shots. Do you have any sample portraits shot at f/4 pulled back? If I get into L-mount I'll very likely get a Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 that will give me more options, and likely a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 prime too but I'm intrigued by your video. This 24-105 f/4 looks like an extremely versatile lens.

    Great breakdown Josh! I'm looking at picking up a workhorse lens like this next as I'm currently using the 20-60mm kit lens that came with the S5 bundle. I wonder what you think of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 vs the Panny 24-105?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Richy! So I’ve never actually used the 24-70 by sigma, but from what I’ve seen, it’s a little slower with AF speeds in video mode. If you’re shooting stills it may also be a hair slower too, but I don’t think that’s worth worrying about...
      I guess it depends on what you’re planning on shooting tbh. The 24-105 suits me to the ground since I love having that extra reach, plus it’s stabilised, and the F4 aperture really doesn’t bother me that much (it’s still able to let a lot of light in and gives a good amount of compression above 85mm)
      Honestly, any of those lenses would be a great step up - but if you’re looking to get the most performance out of your camera then native Panasonic glass is the way to go!

  • @jackhkf1419

    Did you consider the 24-70 sigma for L mount when purchasing the 24-105? Faster lens vs more stable lens - I guess you went with the stabilisation right? Do you use Continuous AF for videos on the 24-105 or not at all? Cause I guess it's an advantage also against the sigma lens right? I'm so torn up between the two. They both cost around 1200 pounds so it's quite a big decision for me to take! D:
    I'm used to shoot on a crop nikon body with a sigma 30mm 1.4. I always had to manually focus though.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jack! It crossed my mind, however for my first lens I wanted it to be made by Panasonic for the more reliable AF and stabilisation. I had come from a crop sensor body so therefore in my head, F2.8 on a crop sensor is equivalent to F4 on a FF body - so for me the F stop didn't bother me too much.
      However, now after using the 24-105 for 6 months, I'm definitely ready to get another lens that can potentially specialise in the areas where the 24-105 doesn't. But, with this in mind, I must say that the 24-105 is an absolutely exceptional lens for pretty much everything I've thrown at it so far.
      Really love it! And if I were you, I would go for the 24-105 as you'd be surprised at what you can do with it :)

Maybe a bit edgy as well (possibly due to no anti-aliasing in the S5). Is there a way to smooth/balance all that out during say, a live stream using the S5?

My 20-60mm kit lens allows me to set the focus to linear as well as adjust the focusing throw so I thought this was part of all Panasonic s lenses. Yeah you can use linear focussing with this lens - you just enable it in the menu on the S5 . You can change the Focus ring control from Non-Linear to Linear, or even set the degree of focus ring control - really handy!
