Since I've had the pleasure of trying out a lot of different lenses available for the L-Mount, I thought it would be good fun to rank them using a tier list I made.
I've used multiple different primes, zooms and cine lenses for the L-Mount with my Lumix S5, S5II and S5IIX. I feel like I have a good grasp of what lenses I like, and what ones I don't.
I really hope this video is helpful for you guys, and hopefully it'll help to inform your next purchasing decision!

I've only got the 20-60mm & 70-300mm and I literally love both of them. The 20-60 is just a really useful focal range for a kit lens and that 70-300 is just too good! I never want to take the lens off!!

That was fun! My main change would be adding the 70-200 f4 to god tier. Never tried the 70-300 but the 70-200 is fantastic. Sharp, beautiful rendering, super stable, no breathing, lovely bokeh… love it.

agree, i love my 70-200 f4, 35 1.8, 85 1.8 and thinking now after watching i might have to have the 18mm 1.8 regardless of $. Loved the inputs. With the L mount ecosystem finally flourishing, it is nice to put things in perspective and provide a user feedback on the what is hot and not. I have a 85 mm 1.8 (along with the 20-60) and absolutely love it . I would have loved to have seen the ranking include other 3rd party lenses for L mount ecosystem - Meike lenses/TTartisans too.

Also own the 70-300. I replaced the 24-105 after I found 90% of my shots were over 70mm and often cropping in 2X at 105mm. I am very happy with that decision - it's a great lens and my copy seems sharper than my 24-105 did. Also I still own the 20-60 if I ever need anything wider.

What a fantastic video. You’ve helped me so much in transitioning from Fujifilm to Lumix S5ii, you and Matthew Rudderman. Curious what you’d recommend between the Lumix S 16-35 Pro f/4 and the Sigma 16-28 f/2.8. The Lumix is on sale so price is less of an issue. It is more about the Lumix having the more useful range and the Sigma having the aperture advantage. I really focus more on photography and less on video. I’d love to see you do a comparison video between these two lenses. I can’t find much on TH-cam comparing them. Keep up the great work! Really enjoying your channel.

Sigma 24-70 is a certainly 'fantastic' for me. Half the price and 100g less than then (also good) Lumix 24-70.
Great alternative to the 24-105 if you're fine with a bit less reach (+ crop zoom option) but get a full stop of light + AFL button in return!

      @@cameraprepper7938 What, why?
Zoom lenses have more use in photography than videography, because you generally don't zoom while filming. And if it's a sharpness issue, then you're either pixel peeping beyond what anyone considers reasonable, or you're doing something wrong while shooting.

Very interesting choices Josh. I would probably keep the 35 1.8 God-Tier and add the 24-105 to the God-Tier as well personally. Same with the 16-28 from Sigma. I would probably have taken the 50 1.8 down a notch to the Fantastic category and that's pretty much it. And probably upgraded the Sirui 50 2.9 to Meh rather than would not recommend. I am hoping they come up with the carbon fibre variant of the 50 2.9, but the rendering from the Sirui 50 2.9 is definitely special and has a place for fiction work, even if not so much for run and gun

Thanks for this "shoot out". Most of us don't get to experience this many lenses, and I trust that gives you some degree of objective viewpoint. Looking at just the range of L mount lenses you have compared here, it's nice to see there is a range of good, to pretty damn good, lenses available. The L mount has gained traction, and I suspect it will continue to do so.
I have the Lumix S 24-70 f2.8, and have to agree it is a heavy lens. I bought the kit lens as a walk around lens, and it works fine for exterior shots.
I use DZOfilm Vespid primes for my video work, but the 18mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8 primes would be sweet on my gimbal.

I got the 24-105 as my first lens after watching your reviews and really couldn't be happier. The ois is so good - if i accidentally flip it off, i notice immediately. Im personally really happy with the sharpness on my copy and i use the semi-macro all the time. For documentary and travel type shooting, it really is a jack of all trades with few compromises.
Someday, maybe I'll grab a prime or a tele-zoom like the 70-300 or 100-400. But for now, i think I'm set.

    • @karikaru
      @karikaru 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@borborcarcar I've never owned a gimbal but I think it depends on what kind of camera movement you're doing. Walking? No. At least not just with a bare rig. If you have cage and sidehandles, and a bit of weight on the camera like a monitor and such it would probably be very close. For a simple crane type shot or short dolly-in/dolly-out you're probably good for anything subtle.

Hey Josh, fantastic video. I fully agree on the 35mm f/1.8 "god tier" status, it is indeed a very nice lense. The lighter and more compact design is a huge plus, especially when compared to the bulkier Sigma 35mm f/1.4. Panasonic really had a home run with the 1.8 primes, and it’s actually incredible how much quality they packed into such a small, lightweight profile.
The only reason I demoted the 35mm F1.8 is because it doesn’t get as much use as it once used to, so therefore I was thinking more about my urge to reach for it; but that doesn’t take away from how amazing it is!

Sigma 40mm F1.4 (used is super cheap), Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN, Sigma 105mm F1.4, Sigma 135mm F1.8 are all some of the best and most unique lenses out. A 35 or 50mm F1.8 is nice, but it's about the least special specs humanly possible for a prime lens.

I have all yours Meh, so the 70-200 f2.8 is so fuking good that I haven't notice the weight, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 is perfect for interiors and artificial lights but in exterior you have to correct aberrations. I also have the 24-70mm f2.8 which is the best lense I have ever used, big and heavy but is the most near to a 5k leica lens, no aberration, very sharp, smooth focus, no breathing, fast and I think the only missing thing for the price is stabilization, it beat the 20-60mm so far and the 24-105mm too.

I have to completely disagree with putting the 14mm f1.4 in "Meh", esp with the reason given here. It is kind of saying that a Ferrari is "Meh" compared to a Corolla because it is heavy and expensive. Well duh, it is designed for a special purpose: to shoot at ultra-wide angle and still at fast aperture. And since it mostly cater to the astrophotography crowd / to be used at low light landscape situation in general, the lens needs to be designed specifically for low light performance (e.g., chromatic aberration), which lead to its size and price. This is never supposed to be a lens that you carry with you on your SL all the time. I do agree that it is indeed expensive and heavy, but honestly should we really expect otherwise for a full-frame 14 1.4 lens?
I don't own many L-mount lenses. Most of mine are M-mounts, which are much much smaller and lightweight. Many of the vintages lenses I own are also much cheaper as well. But that doesn't automatically make another lens that is heavy and expensive meh. It is a fantastic lens for low-light situation.

Sure, opinions are opinion, but then why make this video? It will really only help someone if you establish your criteria. For example, are you ALWAYS going to take price into account? Is the chart primarily about best value? Is optical perfection more important? Apparently not, because you hardly mention optics, where the difference in distortion between similar lenses might make a significant ranking difference. Finally, I wonder how can zooms and primes be compared when they suit such different photography styles and situations?
Set some constraints and criteria... or it's just arbitrary.
But if you want my opinion, the Panasonic 35mm and 85mm are God Tier. Both more useful than the 50mm focal length. I would never consider paying more and carrying a heavier lens, just to go from f/1.8 to f/1.4 at that focal length. In fact my other God tier 85mm is the Contax Zeiss Sonnar, which only goes to f/2.8. Doesn't stop it from taking excellent photos.
I would put the Lumix kit zoom in Fantastic because... do you know of a better kit lens?
So that my opinions make sense, I declare my criteria: weight & size, optical quality, and the fact I hate zooms. 🙂

@@JoshCameron I have the 70-300 (got it for 250 euros, which was insane and basically forced me to get it). I love the lens, but my use case currently is mostly making short videos about the Spanish civil war (riding around Spain on my Triumph), so I use the 18mm, 50mm, and 85mm quite a bit. I sometimes use the 20-60mm but not as much as I thought I would as changing out lenses on my RS3 gimbal is just so easy with the primes. I'll usually use the 18mm and the drone for some establishing shots (and the 18mm works well for peering out from bunkers and walking through trenches). Between the 18mm, drone, and 50mm I cover about 70% of what I shoot. When I'm with my kids I like to have the 20-60mm because who the hell knows what I'll need with them. But I always bring the 85mm 1.8 because the photos of them come out so wonderful. I'm really trying to work the 70-300 but I just don't have as much experience or imagination on how to use it for what I'm doing and here in the city (Madrid). I can see myself using it this summer at the beach for dolphin pods, sailboats, and fishing boats (or the kids playing in the wash from afar). But for my civil war stuff I just don't know.

Frankly inferior zooms from f4 should be at the bottom, not at the top of the table.
With a variable focal length, only 150-600 dg dn os sport makes sense, the rest are better with a fixed focal length, including manual ones, like laowa 12 f2.8 or 90 f2.8, which will give more than plastic from sigma or panasonic.
Although sigma 85, 35, 20 with f1.4 are quite good....

The 18mm because is light, good, and you can do excelent night sky photos. the second will be the 24-105 f4 and thats all. Nothing more. I have nikon camras too and i miss so much this focal lens 24-120mm. It is sooo good you go further than 105mm anyway... I prefer almost everything in Panasonic. Colors, dynamic range... video. One more lens stay with me, but not for hike, but for landscape photos. it is the 100-400mm from sigma. versátil lens. well. Sorry about my english. From Brazil 😅. thanks

Sigma 16-28 + 28-70, Lumix 70-200 f4, Leica 24-90, all ‘Fantastic’ and every day lenses for me. The 24-90 would be ‘God’ if it was either smaller & lighter, or f2.8 constant aperture (because both might be asking too much!). If I had to pick just one and done, Sigma 28-70 and waiting for a 70-180 to replace both the Leica and the Lumix 70-200 on size & weight.

  • @Gynra

The Leica 24-90 mm f2.8-4 SL is an amazing lens, but it weighs about the same as a dustbin filled will ball bearings. Since I'm getting on a bit and am not a weightlifter I sold it recently. I'm now looking for a suitable L mount lens to replace it. The Sigma 28 - 70 looks really tempting. I'd prefer a wider angle at the lower end, but 24-70 f2.8s tend to be quite heavy, as you say. Maybe I should pair it with the 16-28 f2.8? I love the Panny 20-60 as a walk around lens, and I don't really need anything wider, but sometimes one needs a larger aperture. Any suggestions are welcome (well, almost any).

I have the 70-200 f2.8 and I hardly ever use it purely because of the weight. Pretty much to the point if you travel internationally with it, you are going to be hit with excess baggage. The 70-300 looks like better value to quality ratio.

Thanks for the great review. I'm interested in your opinion, will the sigma 35/1.2 be worse in terms of color? Because, despite the much higher light power and good sharpness, it is the sigma optics in conditions of dimming that the color of the skin tones seems to lose more saturation than the optics of Panasonic, Canon, Nikon.
