    Thanks to those of you correcting me on the image stabilization in the 24-70 f/2.8. The f/2.8 versions from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma Art do have IS. The two Canon 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't - however, the f/4 version does. My bad ;)

    • @njrtech
      @njrtech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In this day of mirrorless cameras handling higher ISO so well I don't need a 24-70 2.8 anymore! I now use a Sony 24-105 f4 for nearly all my travel shots and it's awesome. Anyone saying otherwise is full of it

      There's also the new Canon RF 24-70 f2.8 that will have IS.

      The Sony 24-70 f2.8 does not have image stabilization, but such an expensive lens would be used on one of the Sony bodies that has IBIS stabilization, so not really an issue. However, the Sony 24-105 is my workhorse lens. Thanks for the video.

    The Canon RF 24-105 is a great street photography lens for Portland and the Pacific Northwest. It’s amazing how often 28mm isn’t quite wide enough and 85mm isn’t long enough. With 24-105, rarely do I find myself wanting a different lens.

    Love my Sony 24-105 as well. And as you can attest Mads, it holds up great, even when rolling out of ones bag, down the rocky slopes of Fossa, into the water at Nigel's feet! 6 months now and still working great!

    Great points. I would also add that with today’s DSLR/mirrorless cameras it is easy to adjust ISO to compensate for exposure at f/4 versus f/2.8. But having that extra 35 mm of focal length can’t be added so easily. I like the perspective in the 85-105 mm range for portraits which makes the face look very natural and proportional.

      It obviously depends what your main use of it is. It works for portraits, but if that's your main use of the lens and you like the bokeh it's probably better with a 2.8 or something smaller :)

    I switched over from Nikon to Sony about 2 years ago and kept the 24-240 kit on my A7R3 as a general purpose lens, and invested in 2 primes. I purchased a Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art and the Zeiss Batis 85 f1.8 as I was doing more portrait and product work so I was was good. NOTE: I was waiting for the Sigma a 24-70 f2.8 to be released and that was to be my next purchase. I figured I could used it for Landscape and portraits alike.
    However, one of the reasons for a 24-70 was to have the flexibility of shooting "family" portraits with one lens, adjusting the focal length to accommodate the group size. But... When shooting couples or family's, I would have to stop down to f4.0-f6.0 depending on the amount of people in the frame, so that would negate the f2.8 on the 24-70... So the 24-105 f4.0 was a no brainer for my particular needs and your video, including a few others that praise its sharpness, helped me decide! So, thank you for that!

    Brilliant upload
    I had a lot of Nikon lenses and gear sold off to move to Sony
    Although I don’t have ur skills I have ended up with a 24-105. 100-400 and wide 16-35 - the wide 16-35 has more use for me compared to 12-24 as sometimes I use it as Jack of wide and mid range - also for video and my CZ has OS
    The 2.8 or primes have no place in my camera bag - the weight and range of 2.8 lenses is very prohibitory for me
    Great review and superb photographs

    I’ve the 18-105 G myself! Not the sharpest, but honestly I can’t imagine being without that convenient, on-demand range! It’s so so nice to not have the weight of other lenses and not have to expose my sensor to the elements much at all. Do want the FF eventually of course for the performance and quaintly, but honestly I’d probably still consider just getting the 24-105 as my first lens!

    Been using the FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS since March 2015 when it came out. Like the long ago Canon 50-500mm and 60-600 travel lenses this lens by Sony hits near and far just as sharp as the 24-105. Both are the same size. Only differences are the button and switches for stabilize and af/mf. The 24-240mm will do moon shots at 360mm in APS-C and get stars during lunar eclipse and a beautiful diamond ring during solar eclipses with stars also. Do a sunrise at 24mm then some birding at 360mm. Do a landscape at 24mm but zoom to a cliff and trees further than 105mm. Yes the 24-105 is f/4 constant but with a Sony what is f# when you have the +3 to -3 dail. Soon you maybe able to afford the internal zoom and fast focus motors of a new 105 or 240.

    Great lens. I have it also on the A7R2 and the R3. I would also mention that the 24-240, although not constant aperture, is not bad, especially when considering the focal length and the use for landscapes.
    Do you have a video comparing panorama vs. wide angle shots? I see a major difference in the images of the rocks on the beach and wonder if that is really as pronounced.

  • @Xiaoyi_Wang
    @Xiaoyi_Wang 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    从构图上讲,变焦范围越大,可能性就越多,所以24-105是好的焦段。同时也得考虑:最大光圈、对焦速度、防抖、最近对焦距离、成像质量、机身做工、价格等因素。另外,如果你拥有了24-105,那么你是否需要一个105/2.8 macro?你是否需要70-200/2.8呢?
    Compositionally, the larger the zoom range, the more possibilities there are, so 24-105 is a good focal length. Also consider: maximum aperture, focusing speed, anti-shake, nearest focusing distance, image quality, body quality, price, etc. If you have a 24-105 macro, do you need a 105/2.8 macro? Do you need 70-200/2.8? 85/1.8?:-P...

    What's your tradeoff between f2.8 and f4 aperture for 24-70 and 24-105 lenses respectively? I am currently in a dilemma whether to go for 24-70 or 24-105 because one offers high aperture and other offers extra telephoto range with cheaper price too. So if I am spending that extra $600 for 24-70 f2.8, I need to have a strong reason, but I am not finding convincing conclusion yet. Choosing f2.8 gives that extra DOF which is required for portrait photography which I will be missing in f4, so would like to understand your perspective on that. Bdw, I am looking for all purpose lense that covers landscape, portrait and street with 6D mark2.

    • @MadsPeterIversen

    @Mads Awesome video and pictures. Thank you. I have a basic 6D with the 16-35 f.4 and 70-200. I also have the 100-400 but it's heavy, mostly tripod only lens if not bright, and far from having the sharpness of the 70-200 (1st version non IS), even with 1.4 extender on the 70-200. And with all that, I was wondering if you found the canon 24-105 to be a sharp lens vs the 24-70 (even Version 1) from Canon, or against the 24-105 from Sony ? Your impressions would be greatly appreciated. I don't know, looking at some close up images, it seems that the Sony 24-105 could beat the Canon 24-105 in image quality, but you would know better, having experienced them all...

    I’ve really been considering replacing my 24-70 f4 for the canon RF 24-105 for my EOS R but it’s the messing around with then some lenses needing an adapter and one being native that puts me off.

    • @AnVoPhotography
      @AnVoPhotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Downey I understand your concerns. I just leave the adapter mount on the 24-70 (or 50, 1.8) when I switch to the native RF 24-105. Works for me, but it might not work for you.

    Thanks a ton for your videos! Super helpful! I just bought the Sony a7iii with the kit lens and the 24mm GM. I'm also looking for a zoom lens, would you recommend the 24-105mm with the 24mm GM?

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say the 24mm is specific for night photography, so generally you can choose whichever zoom lens you think you'd need the most. A 24-105 is a good start or the 16-35mm.

    I have been using a canon 18-135mm lens for year and you can shoot almost everything with it, but it needs updating. So I will get the Sigma 24-105 ART soon, most people say its better then the canon version. what is your opinion about this?

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried the Canon but I've been happy with my Sigma. The Sony version is however way better in the corners than the sigma.

      @@MadsPeterIversen thanks, I don't think there is a Sony lens with a Canon mouth. Do will go with the Sigma!!

    While everyone must decide what gear works best for them, I agree that the 24-105 is a workhorse. It was my go-to lens for walking around and traveling with one lens for 20 year when I shot Canon (24-105 f/4 L). When I moved to Sony last year, the 24-105 was the first lens I bought. Yes, I use plenty of other lenses when I know what I am going to be shooting and can plan the look I want, or have a pack full of kit to haul around, but I can walk out the door with the 24-105 confident that I will be able to capture a well framed, well exposed shot in almost any situation I am likely to encounter. Of course, if I was going out to shoot sports, this would not be the lens I would take. I have always owned 24-70 f2.8 as well, but I rarely use it. Like you, I find that I miss the extra reach when I am using the 24-70 far more often than I miss the extra stop when using the 24-105. These choices work for me. Your mileage may vary.

    Thank you for such an excellent and detailed video! I really want to buy the Sony FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS as my first lens to get the amazing versatility the lens offers, but I felt worried that F/4 wouldn’t let in enough light compared to F/2.8. After seeing your AMAZING photos, I’m convinced that F/4 will be just fine! Your landscape photos are truly inspiring man! Absolutely beautiful!

    I've had the Canon 24-105 f4 for about 4 years, it has been my go-to lens for almost everything. It is amazingly versatile as you've said, sharp, not too heavy. However I have just bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC (stabilisation) to try out for a bit. I still have the 24-105 so will have to work out whether I'm happy with losing 35mm of focal length, could I get over that with a long lens?
    I did have a 70-200 f4, but I didn't use it often as I preferred to just carry the 24-105.
    It's gonna be tough to decide.

      It's really about compromises. Optimal image quality and carrying 85 different primes or practicality of carrying one zoom ;)

    Thanks for this highly informative video Mads! After watching many TH-cam videos, I was unsure which zoom to go for and left me mistakenly thinking that an f2.8 lens would be 'better', but your video cleared this up and helped me understand that based on my needs, a 24-105 f4 lens would be perfect (for taking landscape shots) as I can also edit these in Lightroom afterwards. I have just ordered this lens, so thanks again :)

    This will be my first lens when I go to Sony selling all my canon gear now for a A7r 3 and a 24-105, 100-400 then one day a 16-35 2.8

    This is your first video that I have watched, I like the pace. Very calming :). I've got a 24-70mm Canon with no IS but I don't miss it. Lovely lens. Its the closest I have to a 'kit lens' so I don't miss the extra focal length either but I have heard people say they miss that 35mm more zoom on the 105mm lens.

    Recently went through the thought processes about 24-70 or the 24-105 to fill my gap as I already had a 16-35 and 70-200, I chose the 24-105 and just love its versatility, maybe an astro specific lens next year, if I am doing a wild camp and looking to reduce weight then the 24-105 will give me great focal range coverage, I am loving the results up to now :-)

    If I ever hit the lottery or get adopted by Oprah, I plan to switch to Sony. For now, I'm still using Canon. The 24-105mm F4L IS II USM lens was the first L Series lens I bought. It's on my camera most of the time. Thanks for your helpful videos and for sharing your incredible photography. Your landscape photography is quite possibly the best I have ever seen.

  • @BernardGarceau

    Absolutely agree. The 24-105 is always on the camera when hiking to a location or touring a city. Love the versatility without changing lenses and the loss of one stop of the 24-70 f/2.8 has never meant a great deal to me. Especially Panos! So literally all of your reasons here really resonate with my photography and approach.
    Funny enough, you dropped this video while I was in the Faroe's, but from the title alone I knew it would be good one! As as you can imagine, the 24-105 was right there with me the whole trip!
