    Today my S1 and this Kit lens arrived. 1st... It is huge but sharp even at f/4 and in combination with IBIS (Dual) it is really great for video. All your explanations are more than correct. Thx a lot!

    A very good review, thank you. I've got this lens with a Leica SL and while it is fantastic at the wide end, for me it needs more careful handling at the telephoto end and isn't quite so bitingly sharp when the subject is at a distance (I wondered if this was my technique, or if it is the fact that the SL has no IBIS, not sure, I need to try harder). This is probably me expecting too much from a lens which has quite a long and useful zoom range, but Zooms are always a compromise. For those thinking about the lens, the bokeh is very nice and the AF is fast enough for a running dog and generally very accurate. I expect the newer Panasonic S1 and S5's will be better again than a 2015 Leica. I got it because it is so flexible, light weight and weather sealed which is great as I live in the English lakes so it is a great lens for hiking and can cope with the rain that keeps the lakes full. Would I like the Leica equivalent, yes except for the high price and the significantly greater weight. Maybe the rumoured Sigma 24-100 will take such zooms to the next level?

    Thanks for the review. I just completed my G9 kit with PL 8-18, 12-60, 50-200mm 2.8-4 lenses as well as a Sigma 16mm f1.4. I was very interested to hear your evaluation of the S1 and 24-105 because I still have my Nikon D750 FX kit that includes a Sigma 24-105 Art lens and the total weight of the S1 kit is similar for those occasions I need the FX for low light, greater resolution and all of the great mirrorless advantages you get with the G9. I was possibly interested in a new mirrorless full frame with Panasonic’s very good menu system to match with the G9. I think I will wait a bit longer to see if my G9 kit will serve most of my needs for travel photography. It seems like the S 24-105 lens may not be up to the quality of the S1 camera. Thank you for the great information on Panasonic gear. I appreciate your candor.

      sulantoblog Thank you for your reply. I have just watched your review again to see if I misjudged your opinions of the lens. I apologize if I got the incorrect impression that you intended. I guess it was the use of the phrase “very descent “ that led to believe that you thought it was OK but not exceptional. With your reference that you prefer prime lenses I can see that it could not meet that standard. I’ll give it another look if I decide to make a full frame switch. Meanwhile I am looking forward to using my M43 kit for an upcoming trip of Maritime UK, Scotland & Northern Spain.Thanks for the great reviews.

    Hi Matti. Very nice, comprehensive and informative video on this Lumix 24-105 f/4. I am very interested in the S1 with this lens (and the 70 - 200 f/4), as a landscape and product photographer who values image sharpness and detail. Have you tested the "High Resolution Mode" of the S1 with this (or any) lens? (It's this Mode that makes me think I don't need the S1R, since a 97MB image is more than enough for a 30" x 40" print. Thank you sir.

      Thanks! I have tested the hires mode of the S1R, but not the S1. However, I hope I can test also the S1 soon. Based on my experience with the hires mode of the G9, I'd say the S1 probably looks very good. You have to be careful with moving scenes, though.

      Renderman.pro, very interesting comment, and one that reinforces my decision to go with the 24-105 f/4 "kit" lens with the S1. As a sharpness fanatic, I'm usually hesitant to go with a zoom of this range, just because I value image sharpness and detail above other considerations, but from this and other comments, I think this lens is the exception to the rule! Thanks!

    Well what can I say, I am a Lumix GX9 girl with a full kit; I was about to buy a 24-105mm f4 today (not Lumix but Sony) and this video has put me right off it. I have already picked up the S1 with zoom in the photo shop thinking, hey this body will take my APS Leica TL lenses and I am a Lumix girl. Well it weighs a ton and looks like the equipment of a Nat Geo outside broadcast unit. Long story short, I was put off the L mount aliance completely and sold all my Leica last week. Problem: I was using my Leica TL2 with adapters to fit all my legacy Nikon and Voightlander MF lenses, what to do, even though my Nikon D700 isnt as heavy as a Lumix S1, its still heavy and the MFT sensor is too small to make best use of full frame lenses? So I bought a Sony A7 with 50mm f1.8 kit lens which was on offer and a Leica M adapter for my legacy lenses. So problem solved. Well how do I use cameras? I use primes and on my Lumix GX9 that means 17mm, 25mm and 45mm f1.7or8. For nature country walks and the Zoo I use the lovely Lumix 14-140mm. Nothing full frame is going to ever change that but I would like the option. So today I was going to buy the Zeiss 35mm f2.8 for the A7 and the Sony 24-105mm f4 for nature. Then I see your video reminding me what that lens is like. What it looks like is my Sony A7 is not going to the Zoo and that pleasure will be reserved for my GX9 with either the 45mm f1.8 or the 14-140mm. Long lenses and full frame just dont mix I think. As for lens design I couldnt disagree more strongly; all software correction degrades the image, its just a fact of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics so there isnt any point arguing about it. So software correction is a compromise. Well as far as I am concerned the choices made by modern lens designers are definately not to my taste so they can keep their big heavy full frame lenses (and that goes for Nikon and Canon too). If they used software correction to reduce size, reduce glass elements and reduce weight and increase microtones I would be first in the queue to buy but, I hate the image quality of these over sharp contrasty flat field lenses anyway which is why I buy classic lenses from the film era; they are perfectly corrected (there is no photoshop on a film enlarger) compact and drip microtones giving amazing depth and clarity in images rather than the fog filled bokeh nonsense that modern lenses are optimised for. My low glass MFT primes have this property too. I will be sticking with my lovely Lumix MFT kit. Have fun ;-)

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. Stop Press: Decided I will probably buy a Sony 85mm f1.8 instead for the Zoo and use my Pixel2 XL phone camera for the wide stuff. Conclusion, I wont be buying any full frame Zoom lenses. Thanks to your video I have clarified my thinking but alas, not the way you hoped from your video ;-)

    My Panasonic G85 is my only digital mirrorless quality camera (I have a Nikon L26 for quick point-and-shoot, and a ton of old film cameras) -- and I tend to use the Lumix 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens in situations where I want photos as well as video of "unpredictable" subjects -- so the variable focal length is very useful. If I want to push to the wider apertures and narrower depth of field, I will swap out the 12-60mm with my 25mm f1.7 or my 42.5mm f1.7 -- those are good focal lengths and good wide aperture lenses. If I really have time to plan and set up my shots, then I have about (yikes!) 75 vintage 35mm lenses and adapters to use for manual exposure and manual focus.
