Why do North Indians Look Different from South Indians? The Genetics of South Asia

  • Today, we're going to answer the questions of why North and South Indians have such vastly varying features, and look at the genetic history of South Asia as a whole.
    I'm not trying to offend anyone with my tangent on skin color discrimination in Bollywood and Indian society, merely stating a fact that Bollywood actors are of a much lighter complexion than the average Indian so it's not fair to judge what the average Indian looks like by looking at South Indian celebrities.
    Indians with light skin are not any less "Indian-looking" than Indians with dark skin. Don't post racist comments in my comment section. Thanks.
    Let me know your thoughts on India and Indians in the comments below.
    Thanks for watching!

    This video is pretty heavy on the maps, hope you don't mind.
    Also, Indians are not any less "Indian" because they have light or dark skin.

      Masaman not all Indians are bad. There are good and bad in all races and people. I guess the media is very good at showing the worst of any country culture traditions etc of non white peoples. But sometimes people of colour don't help the situation by upholding the racist stereotypes placed upon them by acting out evils upon one another.

      Here's an interesting story for you. I'm from Kerala and I did my Engineering in Tumkur, Karnataka. There was a store owner right in front of a popular college in the city and he used proudly announce to every Malayali student that there is this dam in Idukki built by the Kannadigas!! But the dam was built with aids from the Govt of Canada and technical inputs from a Canadian private company. Even after showing him this on Wikipedia, he did not believe that it was Canada and not Kannadiga!
      This came to my mind all of a sudden when I saw Kannada and Canada in the same line :P

    India is not like what outsiders think it is
    India is just like whole European countries together as one
    Every state there are different races, language, culture
    And under those states there are more different ethnic minority groups, It has around 1500 language and dialects and every Indian races are different from one another including their mindset and way of behaviour

    Most Westerners don't realize that India is a complicated place. I lived there for well over a year living in the north and south . Cuisine changes a lot, but basic Hindi and English is spoken everywhere. India was one of the first civilizations to "urbanise" and even at the time of Buddha, India was very urbanized. India invented Zero and many other advanced mathematical ideas. It was NOT the Islamic people. They got it from the Indians through trade routes.

      @@vcx666 \You are definitely correct. I visited many very ancient archealogical sites and Holy sites of great antiquity. Mostly Hindu of course, but Jain, and Buddhist too. From Lonavala just south of Bombay, to Badami, and Hampi in Karnataka. There is also anextremely ancient Holy cave, on the road between Chaggi Bank station in the Punjab, to Hmachal Pradesh. It's seen as mostlly a very early Buddhist cave, but a Hindu Sadhu has been living in it for a long time, and showing it to tourists. It's a nog semi-luxury cave with the river running by with clean water direct from the Himalayas. There really was a sense of an India, and Indian identity, right from ancient times. Just look at Nalanda.

      actually its all migration because of which you are able to find fair people in south india. r1a gene is present in those people as a major part . where as a native south indian (mostly found in tamil nadu and moderately in other south indian states) contains r1b gene which is also present in negroes from australian origin. for example r1a gene is present at around 70 percent in the higher cast people of andhra or karnataka and brahmins from tamil nadu or kerala(see kerala people from karnataka side has r1a genes on the major part). (i am not being racist or anything and i am also a guy having r1b as the major part..,,but stating things)

      Yes, pal. I'm with you. I can't fathom the state-wise divide that we Indians keep building and deepening within us. I've witnessed this in so many Indian communities in other countries as well. Why do we Indian people feel the need to proclaim our region-based superiority through denigrating and belittling others? India is diverse, as are its peoples and cultures. If south India can stake claim to gentler, simpler and more grounded people, northern and western Indians can rationalize our more direct and aggressive traits due to the centuries of wars and invasions that were inflicted on us by foreign invaders. Please remember that North and Western India is where most of the invaders came from for centuries into India and we were the ones who were looted, pillaged, killed, slaughtered, and often subjugated by these rulers for hundreds of years (e.g. the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Emperors). Just look at the warrior histories of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Punjab and see how these peoples, and I count myself among them, have had to develop aggressive resilience to survive with our culture, religion and heritage intact over these centuries of attack. (BTW I am a proud Sikh women who was raised in Uttarakhand and now lives in USA). If we Indians are to truly realize and live with the idea of an undivided India which welcomes and embraces all of its diversity, we cannot have whole regions of the country vilified as I have seen in this comment section and, alas, all too often in millions of other forums. Can we not just talk about what is great about the regions we come from without feeling the need to also vilify other Indian regions as well as Indians we feel are different from us? Tearing each other down will get us nowhere. Peace and wellbeing to all.

    So glad to hear you recognize that Indians are not a race or an ethnicity. So many people assume that my race is "Indian" (I'm Indian-American), to which I respond that Indian is a national and political definition, not a racial one. I'm Asian, racially speaking, although of course that's a broad term.

      Asian isn’t a race either. It’s a continent. East Asians are mongoloids and south and Asians are predominantly caucasoid (indo-aryan and Dravidian in India for example). That’s like calling everyone from Africa the same race when there are different races in Africa.

      Of course India is united. Just because there is occasional problems between religions or castes, does not mean the nation is divided. By your logic, US is not united either since there is constant conflicts between blacks and whites and hispanics.

      @seansteel3326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      95% of US is Christian and an equal number speak English as their first language. Pretty homogenous compared to India or EU if you ask me. Remember, second generation immigrants wherever their parents may come from, still speak English as their main language.

    • @seansteel3326
      @seansteel3326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I did not say native tongue, I said their primary language which is English and this includes most hispanics and almost all second and above gen immigrants today. Tellling me that the US is as diverse as EU or India is a joke. Are you going to tell me that there are big groups or areas of Hispanics or other immigrants where Enlgish is not understood ? If you go to a small town in Europe, you will find just that. Also, if you go from one state to another in India, a large percentage of people won't be able to understand you well at all if you spoke in Hindi or English (common languages)..Christians make up 80% of US, with people putting "no religion" constituting 16% (but of this a large percentage 95% were born into Christian families, hence have a very good understanding of the basics of Christianity and its culture)

The people I was referring to most probably have European ancestors, and that's why they look strikingly European. I know how a Punjabi or Kashmiri looks like, mate.

    I visited India for the first time in 2018 and l will admit l was shocked at how many people l saw. We were in New Delhi and usually when l visit places l go out and sight see and meet people, but in India l didnt. It was just too too much, the crowds, the smells, the noise. When we did drive out there traffic and a few times there was a cow in the road that caused the traffic.

For every instance of terrorism you can point out in Iran, I can point out a related major crime from India (though most of these are with cybernukes, India has one of the highest rates of initiating cyber attacks and email phishing schemes in the world). The point is, at a PERSONAL level, people are generally the same, and there's no reason to hate someone you know nothing about just based on their ethnicity. I think its to do with the Silk Road and the people that historically travelled on the silk road. The silk road doesn't reach southern India and only crosses across the Northern parts of India. The Semitic races probably travelled these roads throughout history and this is probably why the northern Indians look different because they mixed with the semitic peoples whereas the Southern Indians did not.
