    An Obituary is a tribute written about someone who died and it talks about their life achievements and usually mentions their surviving family members. They are usually printed in the newspapers every week and also posted online.

      They are not, however, typically printed in high school newspapers. The fact that the SHS newspaper has a permanent obituary section is a consequence of the town's high mortality rate.

    They wrote and shot this episode, then a week before it was going to air, the Columbine High School massacre happened. As a result, they didn't air the episode until later that summer when season 3 was in reruns.

      But it did air on a station in Canada by accident so bootleg copies of it circulated on-line. I still have a five part RealVideo version of it on a hard drive somewhere.
      Ironically, the episode that still aired the actual day of Columbine was a rerun of The Zeppo.... which featured a bomb at school.

      @@ffaristocrat I don't think it aired in Canada "by accident". A lot of American TV shows are internationally syndicated, and Canada, though a part of North America, isn't a part of the United States.

    I think this was one of the best episodes of S3. Even though the tone is very comedic in terms of Buffy being able to read minds, it deals with potential mass murder, and teenage suicide. The writers did an incredible job to match these two themes throughout. The embarrassment of Xander's thoughts, as with other teenage boys obsessed with sex, and Joyce's attempt to try and stop Buffy finding out that Giles had sex with Joyce are embarrassing and so funny at same time. Earshot is always a fan favourite, keeping up the quality of S3 episodes. Jonathan's attempt to commit suicide is of course stopped by Buffy, as she understands his angst and emotional pain. It was if course not shown on TV at time as well it coincided with the Columbine massacre. It was a brilliant piece of writing.

    When she drops her tray and the crowd applauds is a very real occurrence. An example of mass sarcasm.
    School shootings were comparatively rare when Columbine happened right before this episode. It's nothing like the problem we have now.
    Because the message of the episode is positive, particularly Buffy's speech to Jonathan, they only delayed the episode a tew months. If the shooting happened on the show. It likely never would have aired at all.

    I loved when Angel says you don't have to read my mind. He will always be honest with her. When you start watching Buffy S04 and Angel S01 there is a viewing guide. It is kind if important because there are cross overs from time to time that are right up until the end of both shows.

    With Cockney rhyming slang, you pair one word with a short phrase and the rhyme is from the last word
    eg
    "I left the trouble at home" ==trouble and strife --so trouble replaces 'wife'
    "take a butchers at that" ==butcher's hook -so butchers replaces the word 'look'
    The origins of 'berk' is from berkley hunt, shortened to berk and replaces a very rude word which rhymes with 'hunt'
    Berk has become its own much less rude word for decades now.

    A fun reaction and I appreciate how you saw the sadness of some of the characters. Most times we get lost in the humorous parts and the reveal of what happened in Band Candy but…. the core of the show is Buffy and her travel into being an adult. This episode shows the facade that we cover teen angst with constantly. We have school spirit, sports, activities, intellectual discussion on literature ( that we will never apply in life) and a culture that never tries to help anyone not keeping up with the crowd. Buffy may hear the anguish, the sad lustful desires for intimacy, and the separation from umami contact but she knows this first hand. Being a Slayer has taught Buffy what it means to be alone. Her sense of duty has kept her from involvement in the mainstream high school life. ( Remember she was a cheerleader in LA and actively involved with popular culture). She spends her free time patrolling , killing demons, and protecting anonymously. It is not the telepathy that gives her empathy with Johnathan but her daily life. She even can’t be intimate with Angel for fear she will be responsible for bringing back Angelius. Her ability to read minds is a reminder that everyone in High School has a journey to becoming an independent, strong centered adult. Most of the kids at Sunnydale are immature and still evolving. They are thinking about sexual conquests, there selfish desires, and foolishness. The teachers are not much better… Walk Like An Egyptian? Really! It is Buffy that tells Johnathan what is really going on and that is not from a few hours of hearing thoughts but 3 years of isolation in being the chosen one. She is the one girl in all the world…. Now that is lonely.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But she has a support system, albeit not a perfect one (Xander's immaturity, Angel's volatility, Cordelia's shallowness), and she makes a difference in the world. Buffy's loneliness is nothing compared to what Jonathan is going through. We don't get to see him do anything of great importance because, on a cosmetically shallow level, there's nothing attractive about a short male teenager on a TV show (I think JW, with his personal issues, made his fantasy world all about him under a veil of feminism).There's no empathy here. Only bad assumptions while a real, potential mass murderer is on the loose. Buffy thinks Jonathan is a face in the crowd who's turned into a disgruntled loser. Jonathan thinks Buffy's not different from Cordelia and her Mean Girl posse. They're both wrong. So why aren't they friends?

    • @williambowman1660
      @williambowman1660 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Madbandit77 Buffy answers the question you ask about being friends when talking to Giles. Remember when Giles ask if she will answer yes and go to the Prom with him and Buffy says,” What is he 3 feet tall?” Yes Buffy have an impassioned speech, she does heroic acts, and is the Slayer but she is still a young girl and immature. As she tells Giles, “ I’m not St. Buffy!”. She can empathize with Johnathan and his situation and shows her innate goodness in the past and future but she still has a long and painful journey. Maturing of emotions and thought with application will take time. Buffy does not comprehend the depths of Johnathan’s feelings to want to commit suicide but at least she knows her own loneliness and can sympathize with his plight.No one can exactly know the inner demons and thoughts that plague a person but the curse/gift of telepathy that Buffy has gives her a better insight. This time with the inner turmoil of others mixed with her own experience gives Buffy a commonality with Johnathan.
      Of course this is a 42 minute show that’s number one priority is to stay on the air so it must be entertaining for a mass targeted audience ( 18 -29 females at the time). The ability that the writers and actors could develop many different concepts about life decisions and moral principles while being enjoyable, action oriented, and humorous is quite something.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@williambowman1660 I agree with that, and Buffy's immaturity is tied to what Angel said about actually talking to a person in order to get to know them, especially if they're in pain. Empathy matters in the larger scheme of things, but, unfortunately, in the context of high school, it's not emphasized enough, and since the airing of the episode, cruelty is common on social media as it was right in your face. For someone who was responsible as a teen like Buffy, I expected a better sense of wisdom from her (she could have invited Jonathan into the Scoobies, but he probably would have been Xander 2.0 without the brimming misogyny), but your point about her journey is valid. If you put Angel and Jonathan in a room with teenage girls, those girls would go immediately to the two-hundred-plus-year-old vampire, instead of the seventeen-year-old shlub. That's a sad fact.

    What Buffy experienced with being unable to shut out all the "voices" is something autistic people experience in crowds. We have, to a greater or lesser extent (some are affected more than others) trouble filtering out sensory impressions. This can be overwhelming, leading to emotional meltdowns.
    I don't think that was deliberate. The understanding of autism back when this was written was rather basic. We know a lot more now.

    "Earshot" is a love/hate episode with me. It deals with the serious issues of school shootings and teen suicide, but it does it in a trivial way that's off-putting, since, like Oz said, school shootings are all too common in the United States, whether there's a Hellmouth or not.
    This episode was supposed to air on April 27, 1999, but the Columbine High School massacre happened a week before, forcing the WB Network to delay it. Sarah Michelle Gellar, being a victim of bullies when she attended an elite grade school in Manhattan, lobbied for the episode to air on time, but no dice. It finally aired a few weeks before the fourth season's premiere episode. If you lived overseas or in Canada, like yourself, Vic, you were lucky to see it on time. Some Buffy fans overseas were nice enough to ship VHS copies of the episode to fans here at the time.
    It's going to be the 25th Anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre in April, and, in the United States, not a lot of us have learned from the tragedy. That just compounds it.
    And then there's the speech. Despite the good intentions (Jane Esperson wrote the episode, but Joss Whedon, who's not a paragon of virtue nowadays, wrote the speech), it doesn't work because it's based on a wrong assumption, and I've been where Jonathan's been. A little kindness means a lot to someone who doesn't fit in the world. Yes, people have their personal problems, but it doesn't mean you have to be careless or cruel to someone who's lonely and at the end of their rope. Jonathan, who'll appear in future episodes and not in a good light, is wrong about Buffy being like Cordelia and her Mean Girl Posse, and Buffy's wrong about him being a face in the crowd who's become a psychotic shooter. So why aren't they friends? Buffy's life isn't all peaches and cream, but at least she makes a difference and has a support system. What does Jonathan have to offer to the world, other than being the school's laughing stock, punching bag and ghost? Four years of high school could either make you or break you, and he's a pile of rocks. Like Angel said, you have to talk in order to help someone who's in pain. Telepathy doesn't work on them. Empathy matters.
    In an odd way, Angel and Jonathan are ghosts, yet, in a sad way, if you put them in a room together with a bunch of women, Angel would get more attention than Jonathan.
    You're probably the most thoughtful and responsible Buffy reactor when it comes to this episode, Vic. Thanks.
