When Buffy gets the class protector award I always tear up no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

Jonathan beginning his speech with “We’re not friends…” has a whole different feel if you haven’t seen “Earshot,” which most us hadn’t when this first aired. You start out thinking that she’s about to get another high school humiliation.

Good luck with the finals. 😎👍
This episode is Sarah Michelle Gellar's personal favorite since she didn't go to her high school prom (she graduated in 1995) because she was busy attending the Daytime Emmy Awards, receiving her DE for her work on the now-late daytime soap opera, "All My Children".
SMG actually cried for real during her breakdown because she was invested in the Bangel relationship. David had to console her between takes.
SMG got married to actor Freddie Prinze Jr. in 2002, after they worked on the slasher film, "I Know What You Did Next Summer", which came out in 1997. During production, Prinze noticed that SMG was driving a second-hand car that was ready to break down at any minute. So Prinze became SMG's chauffeur. They have two kids.
Cordelia's dad's tax problems came after the death of the serpent god in the episode, "Reptile Boy", since it benefitted rich people. The dad probably had an accountant who was part of the fraternity that worshipped the serpent god. When Buffy killed it, Cordelia's life went south. Oh well...
You're right about the practicalities of the relationship between Buffy and Angel. Do I think Angel could have handled the break up better? Maybe, but I doubt Joyce would have told Buffy to break off with him because she's still a kid, despite her destiny.

I’ve never considered that Reptile Boy connection to the Chase misfortune. I guess because it wasn’t immediate, it makes sense that it could have been via an intermediary like an accountant. Any sources or is that just head canon?😊

Round of applause for Vic who understands sometimes the bad guy can be right. That's the whole point of this episode and the last. Just because someone's conclusion is wrong doesn't mean they don't have a point.

Some very funny comedy moments in this episode especially when Xander says to Anya when the says she hasn't got a date for Prom and he says ' it must be your sales pitch ' Xander shows he still cares for Cordelia by paying for her dress. The interaction with Joyce and Angel is very interesting and Angel knows deep down she's right. Overall the story of the episode is pretty average, only saved by Buffy's award at The Prom at the end. The Oscar's type feel to the presentation is so well done, a great scene. SMG said this was her favourite scene from the whole show. The last two episodes season finale are great, you will love them, parts 1 and 2 of finale are brilliant!

Yeah, Angel and Buffy both realise in this one that their relationship literally cannot work long term. Not just the curse, as you say, the fact that he's a vampire, any long term happiness they'd have would eventually be agony as she ages and dies, they can't ever be in the light together, etc. Basically any relationship with a vampire is doomed.

    • @donsample1002
      @donsample1002 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

But neither of them have a long life expectancy. Slayers tend to die young, and while vampires can “live” a long time, if they avoid stakes, fires, and beheadings, Angel hasn’t been avoiding those things so much lately.

Tucker did this because he got shot down. Once. And not even in a mean way.
A friend of mine is an extra at the prom. When I watch for her, continuity goes out the window as she's in nearly every shot, often making her last location impossible.
If Giles tried to make out with Buffy, everyone would freak out. Angel is over 200 years older than Giles (Tony was then 45). The California age of consent is 18, so they broke the law when they had sex in S2.
I love The Sundays cover of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses."
I never went to any school dances.
I was very over Buffy/Angel by this point. The Buffy/Angel drawing on her notebook shows just how immature she is compared to Angel.
I don't think Angel understood the meaning of the prom to Buffy as he wouldn't have ever had one, and that would've been ancient history to him by this point anyway.
Alexis is four years older than Charisma. If Wesley and Alexis are the same age, he's 33 and Cordy is 18. At least it's legal.
Most people turn 18 during their senior year (or at least the year they graduate) in the US.
Anya is fully human at this point.

4:45 Isn't it funny that so many people freak out about the 4-year age gap between Wesley and Cordelia but are perfectly fine with the 225-year age between Buffy and Angel...
But even if we take his vampire age out of the equation: He was 26 when he was turned and would therefore still be at least 10 years older than her (she was not even 16 when he first saw her in California).

Buffy defending the idea of her not being a "swoony, little schoolgirl" shows she is, and that her whole relationship with Angel is that of high school romance. She doesn't understand the real concept of love, but assumes she's in love like all other people her age, which is what Angel finally realized. That's why he realizes dumping her is the right thing to do. Underneath Buffy knows this and says so to Willow, but she never would have done so on her own without trying to get back together with him, as seen from _Lovers Walk_ to _Amends_ (or at latest, the _Enemies_ episode).
It's not actually about either of them being too in love. For both of them, as Angel had never been in love before, either. It was just high school "new" love on Buffy's part, as well as on Angel's, as he didn't know what love was before Buffy, either. He was in the position of swoony, little, school-boy position and realized it because he's over two hundred. The only way they could work is if kissing was the height of physicality and Buffy left the denial-land of "When I look into the future all I see is you." That's what she says in _Bad Eggs._ And even then they would have to understand she will age and he won't, so no matter what, there will be a breakup.
None of the above paragraphs even adds in the fact that if Angel never fit into her high school life, how is college going to work? Even a local college is an expanded world Buffy can't ever share with Angel and will need to keep him seperate from. I don't see it working on any level. The only reason their official three months of _Haloween_ to Angel losing his soul worked is because they were denying what they can't anymore. Vic sounds like she's trying to go back to her way of denial, but knows she can't and is still hoping that the land of denial still exists.
There are people who blame Angel for doing this in the sewer. I don't get that as Angel tried not to do it there, but she pushed for him to say what he had to say at that moment.
People like to say how wonderful it is that Xander bought Cordelia the dress she could no longer afford, but they seem to forget the reason he knew she couldn't afford it is because he went into the store to tease and bully her. He was the one who cheated. He should leave her alone. Whether the dress comes off as bribery or an apology, he should be leaving her alone, instead of acting like she did in S1.
Tucker Wells' actor, Brad Kane, is the singing voice for the Animated Disney's Aladdin.
Cordelia being able to tell the group, "Are we all catching up now?" is perfect.
Cordelia and Wesley is technically OK because legally she is of age and he doesn't work at the school, but there still seems to be a creep factor to it as he's been hanging around the school all year without officially working there and he had been eyeing Cordelia when she was, as Faith said, "jailbait." Giles probably had to unofficially tell people he was an assistant.
My guess is the origin of Tucker was a lifetime of being bullied, including about where he lived. The blonde girl flashback was more than likely just a breaking point.
Prop class clown is still funnier than Xander. When jokes stem in part from anger, not all jokes will be funny.
The students showing that Giles phrase of, "People tend to rationalize what they can and forget what they can't" isn't always true when they give her the umbrella, is tear inducing.

angel had one clear chance not to have that conversation in the sewer -- not bringing it up there at all. once he brought it up, it should have been foreseeable that that's where they were going to have it. but regrettably, i think he was thinking out loud.

A reminder about Anya. This is not her natural form/ body. She tells her boss, D’Orfreith?( never can remember his name) she should not be stuck in Sunnydale. She assumed the body of an 18 year old HS senior to get close to Cordelia and grant the Vengeance wish.Anyanka was punished for losing the wish pendent by being cursed by forces to remain as 18 year old Anya. That’s what is the point of what makes her such an interesting character. She has been inflicting pain and brutally killing men and now she suddenly is a teenage American girl. Her , men are evil, will you go to the prom with me says it all. Of course an ex female demon is attracted to Xander. Praying Mantis teacher, Inca Mummy Girl, ex Vengeance Demon… exactly the girl that goes for him and did Xander ro be with.

The thing is, knowing Xander (an avatar for you-know-who), he's the LAST teenage boy to find any interest in, due to his own issues. Anya shows bad judgment by falling for him while the other demon women just wanted to kill him. They have their powers. Anya doesn't. That's very telling.
