The montage is actually written in the original script for the episode. At the time of writing they didn't know what the future held so it was written as a series finale and since they were too far into production to change the story once they found out, just ran with it as the 100th episode.

The Gift was the series finale of the show on the WB, but S5 was such a banger season & so well received, Buffy was brought back for two more seasons on UPN. Then the two networks were merged to form the CW, certain shows were canceled, & the golden era on teen content was over. The move to UPN is also why there were more black characters and people of color cast in episodes. Lots of hit black tv shows were on UPN: Moesha, The Parkers, Jamie Foxx Show, Steve Harvey Show, etc.

Tired is the best and saddest way to describe it. Being the slayer is so fucking exhausting, and even if you win the day, beat the bad guy, and save the world? Your prize is more of the same... more suffering... and that's ALWAYS the prize. Until you can't win anymore. Can't think of a more thankless existance. This is why in Once More with Feeling, Giles' song is always the one that crushes me... "I wish I could lay your arms down, and let you rest at last."

Ah when you realise this episode has been built up since the season 3 finale…this for me is the high point of the series, remember in season 3 during Buffy and Faiths shared dream sequence Faith talks about “Little Miss Muffet counting down from 730” this was a direct reference to this. Little Miss Muffet as you saw was a reference to Dawn and 730 was the fact that from the season 3 finale there were 730 days until Buffy died which was this episode. For me the next 2 seasons do not have the same level of build up.
Also no Buffy’s death does not produce a new Slayer, only if Faith dies does a new Slayer come about. See when Buffy technically died in season 1 that meant the Slayer line went on to the next candidate and that was Kendra who we meet in season 2. As Buffy was resuscitated she was technically returned to life and kept all her Slayer powers but not the part that triggers the next Slayer upon death as that had now been passed on to Kendra. Then Kendra was killed by Drusilla in the penultimate episode of season 2 which triggered Faith. So as far as Slayers go Buffy is an anomaly as she is a Slayer but no longer the “bearer” of the Slayer line (think All Might giving Deku One for All but still having access to its powers without the inevitable lose of said powers)

"What is St. Crispin's?" The St. Crispin's Day Speech is the rallying speech Shakespeare wrote in HENRY V where the king talks about the solidarity and bond of those who fight together and the glory and pride you can share by knowing you fought for a good cause. It is considered a very famous speech that is used as a model for many such speeches in fiction where characters know the odds are against them but one of them then rallies everyone together. And this was originally written as a possible finale since they were being taken off their network and were still in talks to see if the show could be moved to a different network to continue.

I loved in North Texas when the show aired. The WB was a small network with no presence. I don’t think there was even an UPN channel when this aired. When the BTVS and I watched this we did not know about the future of the show. There was not entertainment news like today and most of us were not big internet users.( Ask Jeeves and AOL where the used search engines I remember) Many of us will not forget how we felt watching. The general thought was somehow Glory would be defeated, Buffy would triumph and someone will die. The consensus was Spike and that his heroism would finally get some loving feelings from Buffy. But the reactors and viewers after this episode cannot imagine the shock, sadness, and disbelief of the final 10 minutes of The Gift. All of us thought victory was achieved when Ripper killed Ben. Then time seemed to stop and everyone said that their television made the room surreal. When The First Slayer says Death is your gift , it changed. I get that feeling when Buffy starts to run…. The perfect Swan Dive… Spike , the soulless Vampire, sobbing and breaking down… and then that horrible shot of that cursed tombstone… Buffy Anne Summers. 1981-2001. No show, movie, or play made me have such raw emotions.
It was over a week later that a friend found out Buffy was returning. But what a great show that could make a dozen people feel so invested.
Great reactions and really enjoy the channel. I think Seasons 6 and 7 are great. Fantastic writing, superb acting, and very adult themes about morality and character. Some wish the show could stay in High school forever but the show is about life and the choices we make in becoming an adult. Life is a lot messier when you are 22 than when you are 16 and that’s the point. Buckle up and prepare for the last and most impactful dive into the abyss of the Buffyverse. I can only say enjoy the ride and hang on.

I imagine Joss had sketched out the whole season and, at that time, thought this might be the finale. After the 1st season, the show was picked for 2 years each time. Therefore S1, S3, S5 and S7 were sketched out as a finale just in case the show ended. S2, S4 and S6 are cliffhangers. There was talk of an S8, but SMG had had enough 14 hour days at that point.

They knew there was a good chance they would be renewed, but if I recall correctly since they originally planned this kind of ending for season 5 they decided to go with it anyway because it was so tight and thematically was really solid. If someone wanted to believe it ended here, it would be perfect.
Other things, I remember watching the show week by week back in the day and by the time this ep aired most of the audience (but not all) knew they were moving networks, and after the credits there was a small Thank You text by the WB to Buffy that helped the confusion on if it really was over or not. Queue a whole summer of online speculation on how they would go from here, that was a fun time!

Keep in mind that Giles and co. had no idea that Ben decided to kill Dawn anyway! The Ben/Glory switch doesn't affect more than a few moments from the transition, so from his POV, he knows Ben =Glory, but the only thing he knows beyond that it that Ben is the doctor that saved his life. It makes the moment so much darker.
