Was thinking of trading in my forte5 SX for the VN but went the other way and got an outback onyx XT. Love the soft ride and power on tap without throttling the engine within an inch of its life. Still have the forte5 and enjoy rowing gears once in a while. I’m sure the mods I’ve done to it doesn’t come near the enjoyment a VN would bring but it’s still a peppy turbo hatchback.
@@hychiu1610 Kona n reminds me of a baby cayenne or Macan. Pretty cool car and dare I say better value proposition than a VN. It bridges practically with fun-ability nicely. Ideally though I wished Hyundai didn’t make it so low and gave it usable clearance so you could still make use of the inherent utility of its class.

I daily drove my FR-S for 5 years before I wrecked it on the track! Totally doable. Daily commute, track use, I've ever slept in the back a couple times with the seat down!
The N actually stands for Namyang, a city in South Korea where Hyundai's N performance division is located in. But it's true that the Veloster N was developed at the Nurburgring as well.
I own a 2020 Veloster N and could not be happier. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. The exhaust is awesome. Test drove the N and Type-R, preferred the N. More giggles per mile.
I’ve driven both as well and for the money the N is the no brainer even though the Type R is the better performer. It’s just not worth the 5-8k more then the N. They are pretty close in performance but the ability to customize the N is really dope.
Love this video because I find it so relatable. I owned a 2013 FRS for 4 years and ended up trading it in for a 2019 Veloster N because I needed more practicality but didn't want to skimp out on the fun. I definitely miss the more raw feeling of my FRS from time to time but the Veloster N is by all means an upgrade in almost every aspect. Fantastic vehicles overall and I'm excited to see what the new gen 86 can do.

ITs funny how that happens. My first manual car was my 02 wrx, which I still drive....most other cars feel downright boring and flat compared to it , even 20 years on
@@TrojanRabbit521 I'd be hard pressed not to chose an ND RF just because Mazda piston 4cyl NA engines are very reliable engines and the hard top looks gorgeous IMO, but I chose a low mileage FRS due to price, trunk, coupe rigidity and rear end feel. Did you buy a 124?
@@dannnsss8034 Appreciate, they will, but financing makes leasing so appealing, you have to buy something everyone wants, everywhere, for the sake of trade in time. Fwd sedan or suv it is, no identity. Just find an old hoopty Beemer or fox body to tinker with and help some crate store polebarn worker get a fresh ride and build credit, so drop more than a stimmy on it.
Absolutely love my Veloster N DCT. I’ve owned several hot hatches, GTI’s, mazdaspeed3, civic, and GLA AMG45, this one is the funnest, most adjustable and the best value for your money. O-60 4.8 and that exhaust!
I desperately hope the new 86 gets the Hakone appearance option at some point. One of the best greens I've seen on a car since the classic Integra and bronze wheels that manage to not look garish. Combine that with the new 86 having a good front end design for once? My goodness, perfection. I know it was meant as a special, but a man can dream, dang it!
I've owned both and currently have the Veloster. 86 for looks and RWD dynamics, but man the tech and capability of the Veloster on track will surprise you. It hauls on track and understeer is nowhere to be found unless you come in insanely hot. My perfect car would be the 86 chassis with the Veloster's engine and tech. A manual supra? :-)
I mean that’s pretty easy. Add a turbo and an aftermarket CarPlay radio. Boom. Perfect car. I always tell people it’s easy to add power but it’s impossible to make a Veloster, 370Z, Mustang, Camaro, M2, and many other sports cars to handle like a twins because they are so much lighter and lower.

@@doubled8247 the backseat isn't good, but it's doable. I've had recently a BRZ which I used to travel often with wife and kid.. went to Germany a couple of times etc. It can definitely fit a kid in the back - and a surprising amount of stuff in the trunk

I just bought a 2021 Veloster N a few weeks ago. The upgrades they did over the 2019-2020 are amazing, The new seats sold me on it. If you haven't driven one, do yourself a favour and go test drive one.
I can't wait for both of you to drive the new 86/BRZ with its 2.4L NA boxer 4. I feel like Paul will suddenly become a big fan, like he did with the ND2 Miata.
Love this review and the channel! Agree with you that most of us are being conditioned to think that SUVs are the way to go, but I resisted and got us a sports wagon instead! It does everything right and we certainly don't need an SUV.
It's fun getting funny looks in my 370z among the national parks around Moab... People just STARE because they're used to the same suv/cuv's everywhere. The Z does require you to pack your photography gear, clothes, food efficiently, but I've been able to pack for 2 people for a 7-10 day stay just fine.
As a lone enthusiast, I love the 86. The Hakone in particular has a spectacular color combo of my liking. But to make it the one car? The only car for me and my partner? I simply can't see it. I've driven maybe a dozen in different specs and enjoy them a lot, but one instance I had the chance to bring it home to share with my partner (I really enjoy sharing different vehicles with her to see how she feels about something). In any case, it took us less than 20 minutes to know that it simply didn't have the sophistication to do it all. The ride and road noise was enough to turn her away. My work had a 2007 BMW 330i manual sedan for a few months, and I drove it around on and off for around 100 miles, picking up co-workers, parts, whatever... and it amazed me. I'd driven the E9- platform a few times in the beginning of my career path and never saw what the raves were about... but once I had more of a palate, it came to me: the balance. Not just of handling, but the smoothness, the execution. Coming into driving, I expected every performance car to feel razor edged, which now I feel is wrong often, from AMG's to the Supra GR (there is such a thing as "too firm" as it starts to become too skittish and annoying). The 3-Series is relatively quiet, the ride isn't overly jarring, all while handling well and managing decent performance and economy all in one place. Right before COVID-19 struck, we were looking at the E91 (the 328i wagon), testing an '07 rwd automatic, and indeed we're sold on the idea with how serene, practical, and balanced it is. We can see doing nearly 400 miles through the California Redwoods to our favorite NorCal spots in it. An 86? Not as easily. The Veloster N... well, I'll have to wait until we have one come through work, though I wish I had the Toyota 86 (and Focus ST and MkVII GTi) right there for direct comparisons. I also have my doubts about the Veloster's interior quality, considering early complaints about it being cheapened from the original (which I actually am surprised by, regarding soft-touch materials, such as knee pads on the center tunnel). And then there's the question of road noise isolation. I realize we're talking about a low-cost performance bracket here, but let's look at the used market price of a 2011 328i wagon versus a 2014 BRZ... suddenly it becomes neck and neck for price (around $12k-16k), 0-60 and economy isn't too far off, etc. The world of GTi's and Focus ST's could also be thrown in for fun.
I really want this redone in 6 months when the 2022 GR86 comes out with more power, less torque dip, new look. Might as well add the trifecta and grab a 2022 WRX (not STI) and have FWD vs RWD vs AWD. Veloster N vs WRX vs GR86. Want to make it even more interesting could do the AUTO versions as they are also all different. CVT vs Torque Convert vs DCT.
Lol fr, me too. My dumb 18 year old back then wanted to buy a wrx or sti as my first car (because I used to think AWD and turbos were cool and the way to go) but as luck had it, I ended up getting a manual 2015 FRS instead. At first, I wasn't too much into it and didn't like it much (I wasn't even completely sure what it was tbh) but the more I drove it (and the more I learned about cars), the more I started to love it. I'm almost sure I would've ended up getting arrested or totaling my first car had I gone the wrx/sti route back then but the "slow" and forgiving chassis of the FRS taught me how to become a better driver both physically and mentally. So if anyone is on the fence of buying one of these (especially if you're cross shopping between this and the wrx), I would 100% recommend going the brz/frs way (the new 2022+ brz/86 are going to be even better so wait for that). I drove a 2017 WRX for a bit and the only advantage it had over the FRS was straight line accel. Literally every single else thing is better about the brz than the wrx/sti.

I drove an FR-S for 6 years then traded it for a Veloster (Not an "n", but the Turbo Ultimate) The Veloster def was fun and quite loveable, but ultimately I had to go back.After 18mos I traded it for a 2020 BRZ. In the end the Analog "old school" RWD low-to-the-ground feel of the 86 wins out for me
That's funny, I did just the same with a fiesta ST a few years ago. 86 every time. Pisses me off I had to tune and add headers to get some midrange though.
People buy crossovers and SUVs for those two times in their lives where they'll need it to buy a couch. But they don't realize that many buisnesses offer free shipping/install. So ultimately they still end up with a boring vehicle that gets worse fuel economy and costs more upfront just for a one or two time "what-if"
It's interesting how few times people actually use their suv/truck to haul people and/or gear. I think the concept of capactiy and "being prepared" are big marketing points for products in America, so it's hard to convince people that for the same money they could get a more fun vehicle without actually making any sacrifices
Renault Megane RS 275 is my sole car I use as a daily. Seats 5 adults, has a reasonably useable boot, amazing Recaro CS seats, Nurburgring engineered, eats nearly any car in the twisties and competitive in a straight line too.
First props for actually knowing what the hakone turnpike is, I got to drive it and understand the hype. I daily my 2019 86 and I've got 21k miles and 10 track days and its been great with some reliabilty mods and suspension, brake, and tire upgrades. It has plenty of room if you're good at tetris. I've fit 4 wheels a jack and duffle bag in the car roadtripped to thunderhill raceway, tracked, and drove back.

I test drove the 2021 N a week ago, we tried the automatic because my wife wants to drive it too and we love it, I’ve been eyeing the veloster since the very first regular veloster came to Canada, I like it simply because it’s odd other thinks it’s ugly but I like a car that’s different looking at it, all this N need to fix now is abit of soft material on the door handle and centre console where you lean your arm on, and a better backup camera, then you got a perfect hot hatch for what it’s worth, and that NGS button is something to live for, my wife eyes wide open when I press it and step on the gas, now I only need to think whether I can bear it on long commute in the long run...great review guys.
Veloster N owner here. Super curious how the comparison works with the 2022 GR86/BRZ vs. my car. One mundane question.... how do the back seats compare? I have a daughter who's only 5 ft tall who would ride in the back.
The 86 is always the answer. I daily drive mine all year round, rain, snow, shine and have 2 kids in boosters in the back. It isn't easy but it works. Even in deep freezing Ontario snow I still drive it with winter tires. I haven't crashed or got stuck...yet. I obvious upgrade would be a cayman but then you'd still need another car.
If you like to modify car, brz/86 maybe a better choice because they have large aftermarket supports. On the other end, if you want to keep the modify minimal, Veloster N is for you. I used to have a lot of free time, so I used to own a brz. I now owned the Veloster N
The reason so many believe they NEED an SUV is because of the rampant amount of consumerism forced into our daily lives. we simply own and buy too much useless clutter.

When you have roads like you have in the review available to you, then cars like the 86 & Miata make sense. Most reviewers live on the coast where they have these roads. For the rest of us that live where the roads are flat and straight we need more power
I said it once and I’ll say it again…the Veloster N is truly the spiritual successor to the ‘95 Civic Si. Yes, it’s turbo’d, but so is the current Si. Definitely the best affordable hot hatch today….would love to see Hyundai continue improving it instead of killing it (with it’s low starting price, there’s plenty of room to add improvements and STILL be affordable). Come on Hyundai, make the Veloster a legend and not just a footnote.
That's why I have a VW Golf MK7. Performance, holds lots of cargo, and I use it to tow my 4x8 aluminum utility trailer for hauling what will not fit inside the MK7.
I wanted to cross-shop an 86 with the Veloster N. Within 250 miles there was ONE BRZ with a slush box. Not a single Civic Si coupe manual. It made this an easy purchase in 2020. I wanted a sporty manual. I am certainly not disappointed with my Veloster N.
Hatchbacks are more fun and slightly less practical than crossovers and SUV's. But I guess Americans like tall, overly large vehicles for 1 person to commute back and forth to work...
This is why I watch EverydayDriver...hope. That while I'm currently holding out for the turbo CX5 in a few years when I can afford it used, this shows me I may not have to. Maybe, maybe, I can get back to my roots as a car guy and drive a car that makes me want to drive, well, a car. To have that which makes me want to stand in the garage looking at it... smiling...anticipating. Not enjoying the utility first and merely getting along with the performance second; never giving it another thought when I leave the room. Thank you guys for dealing in the precious commodity of hope.

This just made me very excited for the new GR86. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised with that car. And I think the Veloster, Civic Si, and MX-5 will be no match for that car. The Veloster was fighting a generation old 86. The playing field will be levied soon.
Along with the Miata, these cars are the most fun, cheap and cheerful cars available. Todd understands lightness and driving experience is what matters most, not power or numbers on the spec sheet. Great review.

I love my Veloster N. I have it ecu tuned, downpipe, intake, BOV, short shifter and oh my. 340wtq on this thing is so fun!! I had a nismo 370z and this N is much better all around
I have owned the veloster N, and now I own the 86 hakone. This video is pretty spot on. The N was a lot more practical, great gearbox, good power, fun and best all rounder. The 86 is less practical, less power, more fun (imo), better seating position, RWD dynamics and better appearance. I had the performance blue VN, and now I have the hakone green 86, and both got their share of compliments on looks, but I think the hakone will age a little better. You can't go wrong with either one!

The best all around car I've ever owned is in 08 Acura RDX. Had just the right amount of ground clearance that I wasn't tearing the bumper off. Fun enough that I wouldn't end up in jail. Reliable. Generic but handsome styling. Outstanding dependability. Room for 5 and weekend hardware store trips.
I drive my 2020 Veloster N year around. It does surprisingly well in the snow. It’s only hindered by deep snow and the fear of damaging the low front end. I live in Colorado and enjoy my winter drives.
Love my Veloster N ... while it is true that RWD is a true "driver's car" must have, you have to remember that these people practically drive for a living. If you want a car that you can jump into and absolutely hammer without fear of slipping the back end out into a curb or wall, the N is for you. The perfect blend of performance and forgiveness for the average driver in my opinion. Daily driver for 2 years and loving every minute of it. The bit about "the exhaust may annoy you" ... I think he forgot about the customization .. you can tune down the exhaust to be nice and quiet with a couple touches of the touchscreen.
I went from a BMW 335i to the Veloster and while I miss the way a RWD hits a corner I've learned to trust that the veloster can dive into and handle everything I've thrown at it which makes it rather unique. I would love to see Hyundai make a RWD N car now

@@joshuawalker7038 I am! I daily drive it and I have taken it to a couple "Driver's Edge" events, with tons of flat out driving on track. I am still very happy with the purchase. I do however find that the stiffest suspension setting is too stiff, even on a good track ... I have about 27K miles on it at this point ... the one suggestion I would make is to ditch the 19 inch wheels and go with 18's (assuming you get the performance pack) the 19's have a much smaller selection and are far more expensive. Any random tire shop will have an 18 in stock you can slap on in a pinch, but almost nobody will have the 19's .. special order. also improves ride quality a noticeable amount.
I do actually need space for two kids and lots of stuff. But also know it doesn’t need to be boring and slow. I’m tired of people having the misconception that bigger = heavier with compromised dynamics. I bought a manual awd mk7 Golf SportWagen. My SportWagen weighs 3,100lbs, the Golf R weighs 3,300. Sunroofs, leather seats are where the extra weight is found. Also, the drivetrain, suspension components are where most of the weight is. Elongating a vehicle only needs to add a small amount of weight. In fact the new, BRZ/GR86 weighs 2,800lbs and the ‘21 Impreza wagon only 3,050 lbs. I’m sure that if Subaru thought it could sell they could easily put in the BRZ’s drivetrain and lose 150lbs just by not having an axle and diff in the front. Another example: Ford Focus weighs slightly less the Ford Mustang and has more space. Videos like this, convince people that a sports car has to be a coupe. This is not helping the sports sedan/hatchback/wagon segment.
After owning 6 coupes, NA & turbo I4s, V6s & V8s, my next coupe will be the 86/BRZ. I get it, and I find it quite practical for it's size, with that old school Prelude and RX feel to it. No, not the Lexus RX. What I don't understand how many auto journalists praise the balance & handling, then seem to not center the car in the lane during their video shoots!

I'm considering getting the 2022 GR86 to replace my VW GTI. I have almost double the power but I think I'll like the balance for corners better with the GR86.
My daily driver/only car has been a sports car for the past 29 years: First a Porsche 944S, now a Porsche Boxster. Driven year-round, including Nebraska winters (with winter wheels/tires, of course!)
I've been driving FR-S and BRZ since 2014. Daily commute, everyday, all year round. And I live in Quebec, so yes I drove it into a few snowstorms and I loved it. The low profile and aerodynamics make it that you don't really feel the wind and the limited slip diff can get you out of quite a good amount of snow. I never lowered any of them, so I have a higher ground clearance than a Toyota Echo. My FR-S got totalled by a drunk driver that rear ended it while it was park in front of the house. So I replaced it with a BRZ to have the heated seats.
The Veloster N could win for me, as I am not a single-car person, and any discussion of the 86 invariably ends up with me deciding I like the ND2 better. But in Hakone green, my heart was sold before the video even started.
I've had my FRS for 8 years now and love it, the torque dip sucks but mods did help it. I'm now looking to get a wrx which is the best of both worlds in my opinion.
I just want a 90s civic or prelude. Manual everything. All this new tech, we're paying so much more. Just give me a manual with a steering wheel, I'll handle the rest

Love this video because I find it so relatable. I owned a 2013 FRS for 4 years and ended up trading it in for a 2019 Veloster N because I needed more practicality but didn't want to skimp out on the fun. I definitely miss the more raw feeling of my FRS from time to time but the Veloster N is by all means an upgrade in almost every aspect. Fantastic vehicles overall and I'm excited to see what the new gen 86 can do.

I am spoiled. The first manual car that I've driven and still own is my 2013 Scion FR-S. Now that I get into other vehicles, I feel like they are too tall or too unbalanced.

ITs funny how that happens. My first manual car was my 02 wrx, which I still drive....most other cars feel downright boring and flat compared to it , even 20 years on

@@TrojanRabbit521 I'd be hard pressed not to chose an ND RF just because Mazda piston 4cyl NA engines are very reliable engines and the hard top looks gorgeous IMO, but I chose a low mileage FRS due to price, trunk, coupe rigidity and rear end feel. Did you buy a 124?

Fwd sedan or suv it is, no identity. Just find an old hoopty Beemer or fox body to tinker with and help some crate store polebarn worker get a fresh ride and build credit, so drop more than a stimmy on it.
Absolutely love my Veloster N DCT. I’ve owned several hot hatches, GTI’s, mazdaspeed3, civic, and GLA AMG45, this one is the funnest, most adjustable and the best value for your money. O-60 4.8 and that exhaust!

I desperately hope the new 86 gets the Hakone appearance option at some point. One of the best greens I've seen on a car since the classic Integra and bronze wheels that manage to not look garish. Combine that with the new 86 having a good front end design for once? My goodness, perfection.

I heard the BRZ and GR86 will be noticeably different. The BRZ is softer (grand tourer type thing), while the GR86 is more rougher (sportier)

I've owned both and currently have the Veloster. 86 for looks and RWD dynamics, but man the tech and capability of the Veloster on track will surprise you. It hauls on track and understeer is nowhere to be found unless you come in insanely hot. My perfect car would be the 86 chassis with the Veloster's engine and tech. A manual supra? :-)
I mean that’s pretty easy. Add a turbo and an aftermarket CarPlay radio. Boom. Perfect car. I always tell people it’s easy to add power but it’s impossible to make a Veloster, 370Z, Mustang, Camaro, M2, and many other sports cars to handle like a twins because they are so much lighter and lower.
@@jjchockey the rear seats and the trunk on the 86 is a joke though. You can actually have a car seat in a veloster. Ultimate dad, tuner, dog Dad, track toy 😂

@@doubled8247 the backseat isn't good, but it's doable. I've had recently a BRZ which I used to travel often with wife and kid.. went to Germany a couple of times etc. It can definitely fit a kid in the back - and a surprising amount of stuff in the trunk

I just bought a 2021 Veloster N a few weeks ago. The upgrades they did over the 2019-2020 are amazing, The new seats sold me on it. If you haven't driven one, do yourself a favour and go test drive one.

Love this review and the channel! Agree with you that most of us are being conditioned to think that SUVs are the way to go, but I resisted and got us a sports wagon instead! It does everything right and we certainly don't need an SUV.
It's fun getting funny looks in my 370z among the national parks around Moab... People just STARE because they're used to the same suv/cuv's everywhere. The Z does require you to pack your photography gear, clothes, food efficiently, but I've been able to pack for 2 people for a 7-10 day stay just fine.
As a lone enthusiast, I love the 86. The Hakone in particular has a spectacular color combo of my liking. But to make it the one car? The only car for me and my partner? I simply can't see it.
I've driven maybe a dozen in different specs and enjoy them a lot, but one instance I had the chance to bring it home to share with my partner (I really enjoy sharing different vehicles with her to see how she feels about something). In any case, it took us less than 20 minutes to know that it simply didn't have the sophistication to do it all. The ride and road noise was enough to turn her away.
My work had a 2007 BMW 330i manual sedan for a few months, and I drove it around on and off for around 100 miles, picking up co-workers, parts, whatever... and it amazed me. I'd driven the E9- platform a few times in the beginning of my career path and never saw what the raves were about... but once I had more of a palate, it came to me: the balance. Not just of handling, but the smoothness, the execution. Coming into driving, I expected every performance car to feel razor edged, which now I feel is wrong often, from AMG's to the Supra GR (there is such a thing as "too firm" as it starts to become too skittish and annoying). The 3-Series is relatively quiet, the ride isn't overly jarring, all while handling well and managing decent performance and economy all in one place. Right before COVID-19 struck, we were looking at the E91 (the 328i wagon), testing an '07 rwd automatic, and indeed we're sold on the idea with how serene, practical, and balanced it is. We can see doing nearly 400 miles through the California Redwoods to our favorite NorCal spots in it. An 86? Not as easily.
The Veloster N... well, I'll have to wait until we have one come through work, though I wish I had the Toyota 86 (and Focus ST and MkVII GTi) right there for direct comparisons. I also have my doubts about the Veloster's interior quality, considering early complaints about it being cheapened from the original (which I actually am surprised by, regarding soft-touch materials, such as knee pads on the center tunnel). And then there's the question of road noise isolation.
I realize we're talking about a low-cost performance bracket here, but let's look at the used market price of a 2011 328i wagon versus a 2014 BRZ... suddenly it becomes neck and neck for price (around $12k-16k), 0-60 and economy isn't too far off, etc. The world of GTi's and Focus ST's could also be thrown in for fun.
I really want this redone in 6 months when the 2022 GR86 comes out with more power, less torque dip, new look. Might as well add the trifecta and grab a 2022 WRX (not STI) and have FWD vs RWD vs AWD. Veloster N vs WRX vs GR86.
Want to make it even more interesting could do the AUTO versions as they are also all different. CVT vs Torque Convert vs DCT.

Lol fr, me too. My dumb 18 year old back then wanted to buy a wrx or sti as my first car (because I used to think AWD and turbos were cool and the way to go) but as luck had it, I ended up getting a manual 2015 FRS instead. At first, I wasn't too much into it and didn't like it much (I wasn't even completely sure what it was tbh) but the more I drove it (and the more I learned about cars), the more I started to love it. I'm almost sure I would've ended up getting arrested or totaling my first car had I gone the wrx/sti route back then but the "slow" and forgiving chassis of the FRS taught me how to become a better driver both physically and mentally.
So if anyone is on the fence of buying one of these (especially if you're cross shopping between this and the wrx), I would 100% recommend going the brz/frs way (the new 2022+ brz/86 are going to be even better so wait for that). I drove a 2017 WRX for a bit and the only advantage it had over the FRS was straight line accel. Literally every single else thing is better about the brz than the wrx/sti.

This is great!! I've been wanting to see you guys do this comparison! I drove an FR-S for 6 years then traded it for a Veloster (Not an "n", but the Turbo Ultimate) The Veloster def was fun and quite loveable, but ultimately I had to go back.After 18mos I traded it for a 2020 BRZ. In the end the Analog "old school" RWD low-to-the-ground feel of the 86 wins out for me
That's funny, I did just the same with a fiesta ST a few years ago. 86 every time. Pisses me off I had to tune and add headers to get some midrange though.

People buy crossovers and SUVs for those two times in their lives where they'll need it to buy a couch.
But they don't realize that many buisnesses offer free shipping/install. So ultimately they still end up with a boring vehicle that gets worse fuel economy and costs more upfront just for a one or two time "what-if"
It's interesting how few times people actually use their suv/truck to haul people and/or gear. I think the concept of capactiy and "being prepared" are big marketing points for products in America, so it's hard to convince people that for the same money they could get a more fun vehicle without actually making any sacrifices
Renault Megane RS 275 is my sole car I use as a daily. Seats 5 adults, has a reasonably useable boot, amazing Recaro CS seats, Nurburgring engineered, eats nearly any car in the twisties and competitive in a straight line too.
ED: there isnt an SUV that drives like this.

First props for actually knowing what the hakone turnpike is, I got to drive it and understand the hype. I daily my 2019 86 and I've got 21k miles and 10 track days and its been great with some reliabilty mods and suspension, brake, and tire upgrades. It has plenty of room if you're good at tetris. I've fit 4 wheels a jack and duffle bag in the car roadtripped to thunderhill raceway, tracked, and drove back.

I test drove the 2021 N a week ago, we tried the automatic because my wife wants to drive it too and we love it, I’ve been eyeing the veloster since the very first regular veloster came to Canada, I like it simply because it’s odd other thinks it’s ugly but I like a car that’s different looking at it, all this N need to fix now is abit of soft material on the door handle and centre console where you lean your arm on, and a better backup camera, then you got a perfect hot hatch for what it’s worth, and that NGS button is something to live for, my wife eyes wide open when I press it and step on the gas, now I only need to think whether I can bear it on long commute in the long run...great review guys.

Veloster N owner here. Super curious how the comparison works with the 2022 GR86/BRZ vs. my car. One mundane question.... how do the back seats compare? I have a daughter who's only 5 ft tall who would ride in the back.

The 86 is always the answer. I daily drive mine all year round, rain, snow, shine and have 2 kids in boosters in the back. It isn't easy but it works. Even in deep freezing Ontario snow I still drive it with winter tires. I haven't crashed or got stuck...yet. I obvious upgrade would be a cayman but then you'd still need another car.

If you like to modify car, brz/86 maybe a better choice because they have large aftermarket supports. On the other end, if you want to keep the modify minimal, Veloster N is for you. I used to have a lot of free time, so I used to own a brz. I now owned the Veloster N
The reason so many believe they NEED an SUV is because of the rampant amount of consumerism forced into our daily lives. we simply own and buy too much useless clutter.

When you have roads like you have in the review available to you, then cars like the 86 & Miata make sense. Most reviewers live on the coast where they have these roads. For the rest of us that live where the roads are flat and straight we need more power
I said it once and I’ll say it again…the Veloster N is truly the spiritual successor to the ‘95 Civic Si. Yes, it’s turbo’d, but so is the current Si. Definitely the best affordable hot hatch today….would love to see Hyundai continue improving it instead of killing it (with it’s low starting price, there’s plenty of room to add improvements and STILL be affordable). Come on Hyundai, make the Veloster a legend and not just a footnote.
That's why I have a VW Golf MK7. Performance, holds lots of cargo, and I use it to tow my 4x8 aluminum utility trailer for hauling what will not fit inside the MK7.
I wanted to cross-shop an 86 with the Veloster N. Within 250 miles there was ONE BRZ with a slush box. Not a single Civic Si coupe manual. It made this an easy purchase in 2020. I wanted a sporty manual. I am certainly not disappointed with my Veloster N.
Hatchbacks are more fun and slightly less practical than crossovers and SUV's. But I guess Americans like tall, overly large vehicles for 1 person to commute back and forth to work...
This is why I watch EverydayDriver...hope. That while I'm currently holding out for the turbo CX5 in a few years when I can afford it used, this shows me I may not have to. Maybe, maybe, I can get back to my roots as a car guy and drive a car that makes me want to drive, well, a car. To have that which makes me want to stand in the garage looking at it... smiling...anticipating. Not enjoying the utility first and merely getting along with the performance second; never giving it another thought when I leave the room. Thank you guys for dealing in the precious commodity of hope.

This just made me very excited for the new GR86. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised with that car. And I think the Veloster, Civic Si, and MX-5 will be no match for that car.

Along with the Miata, these cars are the most fun, cheap and cheerful cars available. Todd understands lightness and driving experience is what matters most, not power or numbers on the spec sheet. Great review.

I love my Veloster N. I have it ecu tuned, downpipe, intake, BOV, short shifter and oh my. 340wtq on this thing is so fun!! I had a nismo 370z and this N is much better all around
I have owned the veloster N, and now I own the 86 hakone. This video is pretty spot on. The N was a lot more practical, great gearbox, good power, fun and best all rounder. The 86 is less practical, less power, more fun (imo), better seating position, RWD dynamics and better appearance. I had the performance blue VN, and now I have the hakone green 86, and both got their share of compliments on looks, but I think the hakone will age a little better. You can't go wrong with either one!

The best all around car I've ever owned is in 08 Acura RDX. Had just the right amount of ground clearance that I wasn't tearing the bumper off. Fun enough that I wouldn't end up in jail. Reliable. Generic but handsome styling. Outstanding dependability. Room for 5 and weekend hardware store trips.

I drive my 2020 Veloster N year around. It does surprisingly well in the snow. It’s only hindered by deep snow and the fear of damaging the low front end. I live in Colorado and enjoy my winter drives.

Love my Veloster N ... while it is true that RWD is a true "driver's car" must have, you have to remember that these people practically drive for a living. If you want a car that you can jump into and absolutely hammer without fear of slipping the back end out into a curb or wall, the N is for you. The perfect blend of performance and forgiveness for the average driver in my opinion. Daily driver for 2 years and loving every minute of it. The bit about "the exhaust may annoy you" ... I think he forgot about the customization .. you can tune down the exhaust to be nice and quiet with a couple touches of the touchscreen.
I went from a BMW 335i to the Veloster and while I miss the way a RWD hits a corner I've learned to trust that the veloster can dive into and handle everything I've thrown at it which makes it rather unique. I would love to see Hyundai make a RWD N car now

@@joshuawalker7038 I am! I daily drive it and I have taken it to a couple "Driver's Edge" events, with tons of flat out driving on track. I am still very happy with the purchase. I do however find that the stiffest suspension setting is too stiff, even on a good track ... I have about 27K miles on it at this point ... the one suggestion I would make is to ditch the 19 inch wheels and go with 18's (assuming you get the performance pack) the 19's have a much smaller selection and are far more expensive. Any random tire shop will have an 18 in stock you can slap on in a pinch, but almost nobody will have the 19's .. special order. also improves ride quality a noticeable amount.

I do actually need space for two kids and lots of stuff. But also know it doesn’t need to be boring and slow. I’m tired of people having the misconception that bigger = heavier with compromised dynamics. I bought a manual awd mk7 Golf SportWagen. My SportWagen weighs 3,100lbs, the Golf R weighs 3,300. Sunroofs, leather seats are where the extra weight is found. Also, the drivetrain, suspension components are where most of the weight is. Elongating a vehicle only needs to add a small amount of weight. In fact the new, BRZ/GR86 weighs 2,800lbs and the ‘21 Impreza wagon only 3,050 lbs. I’m sure that if Subaru thought it could sell they could easily put in the BRZ’s drivetrain and lose 150lbs just by not having an axle and diff in the front. Another example: Ford Focus weighs slightly less the Ford Mustang and has more space. Videos like this, convince people that a sports car has to be a coupe. This is not helping the sports sedan/hatchback/wagon segment.

After owning 6 coupes, NA & turbo I4s, V6s & V8s, my next coupe will be the 86/BRZ. I get it, and I find it quite practical for it's size, with that old school Prelude and RX feel to it. No, not the Lexus RX. What I don't understand how many auto journalists praise the balance & handling, then seem to not center the car in the lane during their video shoots!
I'd rather have the Toyota GR Yaris over both of these cars, but sadly it's not sold in North America.

I'm considering getting the 2022 GR86 to replace my VW GTI. I have almost double the power but I think I'll like the balance for corners better with the GR86.
My daily driver/only car has been a sports car for the past 29 years: First a Porsche 944S, now a Porsche Boxster. Driven year-round, including Nebraska winters (with winter wheels/tires, of course!)

I've been driving FR-S and BRZ since 2014. Daily commute, everyday, all year round. And I live in Quebec, so yes I drove it into a few snowstorms and I loved it. The low profile and aerodynamics make it that you don't really feel the wind and the limited slip diff can get you out of quite a good amount of snow. I never lowered any of them, so I have a higher ground clearance than a Toyota Echo. My FR-S got totalled by a drunk driver that rear ended it while it was park in front of the house. So I replaced it with a BRZ to have the heated seats.

I've had my FRS for 8 years now and love it, the torque dip sucks but mods did help it. I'm now looking to get a wrx which is the best of both worlds in my opinion.
I just want a 90s civic or prelude. Manual everything. All this new tech, we're paying so much more. Just give me a manual with a steering wheel, I'll handle the rest
