2 weeks into my new BRZ. From a recent Road & Track Article: The BRZ makes everything else on the market today feel like an overcomplicated, over-complex bloatfest.
Pretty well said. A bit more a throwback and more analog/visceral and not as video game-ish as modern cars. It was the flaws of cars of yesteryear like Lotus Elan, several British sportscars from Jag to Triumph to MG including old Corvettes, Alphas, Fiat Spider etc that gave them their character. Perfection as it turns out can be a bit boring aka BMW.
Same here, sounds just fine to me. I'm more shocked at the fact Toyota piped in the fake engine sound in a car like this. I imagine they will remove it altogether in the years to come or at least have a way for us to turn it off.
@@mikea5205 I think it's pretty clear that many manufacturers think "louder = better" even if it's fake sound. Enthusiasts, for the most part, hate the fake sound, which is what the auto makers are failing to acknowledge. On the other hand, if you're driving the car "normally" or just not an enthusiast, you might not care about the fake sound. I'll throw my wife under the bus here and say she falls in this category haha. She thinks her 330i sounds really nice. I will admit, at low RPM the piped-in sound is okay, not offensive, but anything over 4k RPM and it sounds like a video game sound effect. Kinda takes me out of the experience of driving. On the other hand, in my IS 350 I can disable the fake sound, which I do because it's not needed.
Engine sounds through speakers always sound muffled to me. Recording the engine sound and playing it through car speakers(which are from a studio monitor) on top of the actual engine sound is a terrible idea. You'd really need to EQ out a bunch of interfering frequencies to make them stack well. I think it'll get better over time. I bet electric cars will sound cool at some point too.
Oh no I have one, it's very quiet, like yes you can still hear something but it fades away very easily I had to buy a catback to bring the sound back. It's painfully quiet.
You guys turned a normal Q&A video into something so much more. The ending was borderline emotional. Just hanging on the drone shot made me do a quick retrospective about a lot of things. I continue to be impressed, guys.
@@EverydayDriver I would be interested to see a comparison against the first gen BMW Z4 3.0si coupe and the GR86. I know it is an older car but I feel like it would be a good comparison for a used alternative. New car wise there really is not anything else out there besides the Miata, or Fiat 124 Abarth maybe.
If I could break down why I love my GR86 so much it would be this: After owning a GR86 for 3 months, everything else feels heavy, less engaged, and too expensive. Why would I pay more money for less connection.
@Garboi I have a question. So I’m sitting at a red light and let go of the brake, why does it make a quick clunky type noise? It also does it very little when I put into gear. Is it something I should worry about?
@@PeytonLindsay86 I wouldn’t be worried. The first gen was kinda noisy too. We just don’t have much sound insulation since it’s such a light car. As long as there’s no clunks and rattles while driving you are okay. The transmission is just loud in my experience.
well, if your goal is to be a cheap @ss you should have just bought an old used corvette. the GR86 is a great value but dont think it is a cheap car considering they are over 30,000$ out the door and keep in mind if your goal is performance you could have had a brand new veloster N which may not be as fun "subjectively" but will certainly stomp the GR86 on a real track course. the goal here is "compromise" in cost, performance and value.
@@potatochobit but I want a new car. The veloster N (which I heavily considered) costs 33,000 before markup and taxes and fees for the what I want. The GR86 was 30,300 before all of that. Not to mention the Toyota dealership near me does $0 markup. The only place with a velostern N within any reasonable distance to me was $3k over on just a 1.6t r spec. They told me it would be close to 40k for an N. So not only did I save money getting the 86, which I bought cash, I also got a more enjoyable car. I drove a type R which was not as fun as this and couldn’t drift. I can’t find any new rwd car in a good trim level for this price. Also I have seen several blown theta II series engines at my shop and they are not impressive in any regards internally. That’s another thing that pushed me away from the veloster N. The average new price of a car is $47,100. So yeah I’d say it was pretty cheap. Let me know if I misunderstood you. I took what you said as saying the Gr86 is not worth the money, which I disagree with. If you don’t mind used, a C6 is great. But you also have no new features and who knows how it was treated.
@@xx_jason_xx5568 The general rule of thumb for naturally aspirated (NA) engines is 3% power loss for every 1000' of elevation. Turbocharged engines tend to make similar power at elevation as they do at sea level, though at extreme altitude they lose power too.
It takes about 5 minutes to just disconnect the noise generator on your own. You open the passenger door and pop off the side dash cover. Sound box is visible. Reach in and unplug connector. Tape connector to something so it won't rattle. Done. I don't automatically hate sound generators, but this one seemed especially artificial to me and overly loud at high rpm. Engine sound is much better without it.
@@ottoyang9511 The first thing to get rid of is the seat belt chime. It is crazy. PRess start button once, don't start, then put the clip in the socket 20 times in 30 seconds. there after you will get 3 chimes and the light will still come on before you put on the seat belt.
I’ll be honest, at this time, I like the sound activator on mine. But, I’m hard of hearing and it helps me with my shifts because I can hear the RPM’s better. I may turn it off if I add a catback, but, I’m loving the car so far. I have the same exact premium model and color. Your reasons for purchasing this car are the same as mine. Every day I’m actually more excited to drive this car than my previous Porsches. That says a lot.
I absolutely love this car. I deliver cars for a living and I see these at the loading yard all the time. you guys got the perfect color and those wheels are beautiful. hopefully in a year or so I'll have exactly the same one.
@@DM-ye9mm I'd say it looks about as good in person as it does in video but yeah it looks great in person. The brz looks kinda weird. The front end is too smiley. I've delivered a few brz and 86 they get sideways real quick if you give them the beans. Really fun to drive
7:55 "and we need to stop equating power numbers with fun" THANK YOU! I couldn't agree more with this. People these days always associate more power for more fun but it's not the case at all. How could you ever enjoy a 800hp car with an automatic on normal roads? You're just gonna go all over the place. It's all about the status quo of saying "yeah it has a lot of hp and goes 0-60 in very few seconds". These aren't real car enthusiast. They're just posers. That's not how we should see fun in cars at all. Just this morning I had an argument with someone who was comparing the Porsche GT3 with the GT2 RS, by telling me that the "GT2 goes faster because it's turboed". I told him that why would you ever need 700hp on a lightweight car?! You'll just spin and oversteer every second. Plus it doesn't have high RPMs and it doesn't have a manual. The GT3 is naturally aspirated, so it revs up to 9000rpm, with 500hp or so, still a lot but way better and more than enough and it has a manual transmission. Just like that, the GR86 is the perfect recipe for fun. Well enough power and good torque distribution, manual transmission and RWD with a diff and perfect weight distribution. I love this car so much.
Totally agree. With these high horsepower typically expensive cars, where are you going to be able to fully ring out the car? The race track maybe, but on the street the most you can experience is raw acceleration. Is that all there is to driving? Hell no. The GR 86 is an aspirational car for myself, something with due time I can afford, and not to far off. Sure a Ferrari is cool, but its it a true driving machine or a status symbol.
Yep, for a large part of the population, non-enthusiasts and enthusiasts alike, the only thing that matters is horsepower and 0-60 times. It is what it is....
@@chady7009 a Ferrari is cool, if it's at least 20 years old! Where they still made naturally aspirated V8s with a manual! Around 400hp is all you needed and they were awesome!
Best part is enjoying all of the rpms at a very low speed. I picked up an ST and gave it a tune to fill in the power and comfort gap. I'm having a really hard time finding something to replace my 86 besides another 86.
I think it sounds so much better now. Why they didn't do that from the factory is crazy. At least put it in the menu like Kia/Hyundai does where you can toggle it off and on. Great info here as always. Love what you guys have done.
Thanks for highlighting the fact that it's totally usable with 3/4 persons as long as some of the passengers aren't too tall. I'm tired of hearing "the 2 back seats aren't usable". Having the ability to carry 3/4 persons is a huge feature vs a Miata. It also enables fitting 4 wheels in the trunk, which is extremely convenient (especially if you live in a city where you switch between summer and winter tires every year)
this is such a great video because there are many drivers out there that want to own an 86 but are scared to learn and drive MT, and the host here is encouraging them to learn, specifically with this car. i feel like it gives them the push they need to get over their fear of MT, especially when toyota made it so much easier to learn with the 86
This reminds me of my '87 RX-7, lightweight, rwd, and with 4 Hakka's I was going up and over unpaved, snow covered gaps in VT on the way to skiing. Lightweight and good winter tires are the best combo for winter driving.
That big grin on Todd’s son’s face put a smile on mine. You would think after 5 kids I would be immune to their charm. Awesome on killing the fake noise and it really was quite unnecessary. Who is it really there for? Great job guys!
If I ever get an electric car, I want the sound of George Jetson's car piped in. Concerning winter tires on RWD, I've driven my BMW on Michelin Ice-X tires through snow deep enough that I can hear the snow hitting the belly pan. No issues.
My IS300 with LSD and all seasons even handles the snow amazingly. Had it for 6 years and live in the midwest. Like they said though ground clearance of big icy rocks is the only thing to take note of.
i daily my 86 in a near Alpine region which sees a bit of snow in the winter months and even with the shitty old snow tires it worked, sideways but it worked, went to work no problem. my favorite experience was driving to work out of my hood onto the main way where the bus stop is and everyone is waiting for the bus and i turn onto the main road infront of them and the tail end comes lose and i look like an absolute maniac, grinning like the weird cat from alice in the wonderland. i didnt even want to do it but man...those slides are sooo controllable and once it happens i just cant stop grinning.
Yep, drove a NA Miata in the Midwest for years - snow, sleet, freezing rain... drove through it all and always made it to the destination in a reasonable time. Good tires and knowing your vehicle will get you through the almost any situation that most drivers will face. As mentioned, a steep hill that isn't plowed would be a problem, but most people aren't going to be dealing with steep, unplowed hills very often.
Thank you for providing such clear and logical reviews/feedback targeted towards “everyday drivers”. I’ve been flip flopping constantly between looking for a used Cayman or a brand new GR86/BRZ. Porsche resale values have gone up considerably over the past 24 months which has made me lean much harder toward a new GR86/BRZ purchase decision. I’ve been afraid that I would regret that at some point but your reviews have really helped me feel confident that I will be thrilled with this vehicle for a long time to come. I also really want a naturally aspirated power plant and a GTS Cayman is way out of my price range. Thanks for the great reviews!
Fantastic video! I wish you guys could do more "what a car is like to live with" -like videos. So helpful! More details on cars that are demo'd besides the driving dynamics would help greatly when cross-shopping.
This car is an awesome gem that's being produced for us. When they first came out I got to drive a BRZ for a photo shoot and loved it. My nephew is looking at the 86 and test drove it for him. Still enjoyed it, these cars are really fun for the price.
I honestly wasn’t looking at the GR86/BRZ but man after doing more research, the very good point of “more horsepower doesn’t mean more fun”, and looking at that beautiful model y’all are driving, I think I really have to consider this one now if it is available near me anytime soon
Good video. Regarding rev hang - interesting that Todd said the revs don't "linger" because my experience has shown otherwise. When driving around town, especially during the 1-2 shift, the tach needle will literally pause for 1-2 seconds before falling while the clutch is in. Really makes it difficult to drive smoothly unless you slow your inputs down drastically. Not an issue at all when driving flat out, though.
I haven't had this issue at all on my BRZ. I found at first I was leaving my foot on the gas a 1/2 second too long which made it seem like there was rev hang, but after testing and adjusting the issue is gone. Could also just be minor differences car to car though
I would love the 86, but can't find one. Some dealers are driving them a couple hundred miles, calling them used and the selling them for 40k. As a MR2 Spyder owner I can attest that there is no correlation between fun-n-power. Great review.
Same haha, got a 1zz in my Spyder. Drove an E90 M3 for a week on vacation and the whole time I couldn't wait to get back to the MR2. I was constantly scared of getting pulled over driving the M3, but with my MR2 I can rev it all the way out and enjoy it without any fear. Slow cars rule!
4 winters and a limited slip differential work just fine. I used a Honda S2000 as a 4 season car in the Midwest, thanks to a second set of wheels with winter tires.
@@toddsmith8608 Well, I sold the S2000 7 years ago after I bought a Boxster. But I did make a point of taking it through a car wash with an undercarriage spray after every storm.
Definitely sounds better without the engine noise. Good pick on the GR86 totally agree with everything you guys said. This will be one of the last of its kind before everything is electrified.
I am 50 yrs old, tall, and live where winters are snowy. I never had the opportunity to learn to drive manual, but plan to teach myself. I just wasn’t sure what car to get. After watching this video, this car just went to the top of list. Thanks!
It is much easier to learn to drive a manual in today's vehicles because most if not all the clutch pedals have hydraulic assist. One no longer needs to have calf muscles like a Tour de France bike racer!
You might want to learn on another car first, preferably an older car that you don't mind being hard to. If you're learning for the first time in your brand new manual car then you always run the risk of damaging the gears if you make big mistakes. Luckily my dad's friend runs a small used car dealership and he let me learn on one of his cheap inventory cars that I borrowed for a few weeks, a 20 year old Subaru that was already in rough shape to begin with, so I was able to learn worry free. I then bought a brand new civic si manual a few weeks later. I'm glad I didn't have to learn from scratch on my new baby and put her at risk
I can really appreciate the adverse driving conditions you live & drove in using the 86. Great info sharing how we can getthe best exp out of hearing the actual engine sounds
Bought a 2015 BRZ Limited with 13000 miles 3yrs ago. My 18yr old daughter wanted to drive a manual transmission. Its a blast to drive. Most fun Dad/Daughter car you can get. Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Handles great and often i find myself going faster I should be. I'd love to try a new GR 86.
I’m loving this little car! I’m a Subaru guy but agree the grill on GR86 looks better and that color is great! I’m trying to convince my wife we need an ‘extra’ car (I have a Tacoma to pull a boat and haul dirt bikes otherwise I’d still be driving my WRX) and I might have a chance because she appreciates a good manual RWD coupe. :-)
It was a tough choice between a new GR86 6 speed VS an old 5th Gen Camaro Z/28 with the 7 liter. Ultimately after driving both back to back, the Camaro won me over. I know it's a more expensive car but god damn it is but the most fun on four wheels I've had since the 911 Turbo years ago.
The Z28 is a lot better car. The GR86 gets a lot of hype because it’s under $40k for a RWD, manual sports car, but to me that’s a lot of $$ for a pretty slow car. So I don’t see the hype. I’d rather buy a used car, that’s a lot better, like you did. E46 M3, S2000, and so many more can be bought for a lot cheaper, and provide more fun. Spending a little more $$ for a used Z28, or even a GT350, is so worth it. So much more fun. The GR86 is a toy
@@avery4528 My thoughts. Yes its an extra 600 lbs (2800 and change for GR86 and 3400 and change for Camaro), but more power, quicker and better weight distribution (52/48 for Camaro and 56/44 for the GR86). Prices are similar. Of course the Camaro does not have the hype. But other than the weight the Camaro V6 is a better car.
I'm so so so glad you went GR86 over BRZ. I'll just say what everyone else is thinking: The BRZ grill is a goofy smile that just keeps getting goofier. To the point where I'm pretty sure Subaru makes its smile goofier every time they redesign so everyone will think they're not serious about this collab. Good on Toyota for taking the future of Naturally-Aspirated sportscars seriously. The GR grill is much much MUCH more aggressive and beautiful.
After seeing a LOT of reviews for the GR 86, because I love it 🥰, I became soo sick of that speaker, and when I listen to yours with no pipped in sound I finally feel at peace ❤️😩🙌🏻
Thank you guys so much for your reviews on this masterpiece of a car...im lookin to pick one up summer of 2023 and personally im cant wait and im so excited for this car.
Chris, I own a sleek black, manual shift, 2017 ‘86 and absolutely love my sports car. My very first car was a used, 1977 manual shift Toyota Corolla and when I got behind the wheel of the ‘86 all the manual shift “feel” came back to me.. like I’d never left standard shift. Bought it in Jan.2018 for $30 G’s. It’s a blast to drive & peel out on occasion :) I also love the retro feel & look of the interior. There are no bells & whistles and that’s just fine with me (less to break down & maintain). I hope you get the 2023 you hope for. You won’t be sorry.
Current 86 owner, had the privilege of driving a 1.8L NA MX5 for a couple of days. This recipe is going to be gone forever, even if lightweight batteries are achieved they won't be paired to an engaging manual. Glad to see you buying new to encourage this!
From someone who just started driving a manual roughly 6 - 7 months ago in a 2007 Yaris 5 speed. I really appreciate the new drivers section of this video. I think the GR86 will be my next vehicle!
I completely agree. Having fake engine noises is really dumb. Alas, they have to cater to the lowest common denominator 🤷🏻♂️ If I was in the market for a new daily sports, it would have to be the 86/BRZ. It’s a no brainer really. 👍🏻
In regards to your statement about not agreeing with people that say they can't own a RWD car due to snowy weather - you're 100% correct. I live in the Midwest, I drove a NA Miata as my only vehicle for several years, driving it through blizzards and freezing rain. Good tires and knowing how your vehicle drives will get you through the situations that the majority of drivers will encounter on a daily basis.
I’m at 1,500 after break-in. Got fresh Toyota care oil change complimentary, dropped in GR performance engine air filter, some decals, and installed GR shift knob for my MT. Couldn’t be happier!
I love my 2018. It's pretty much bone stock. The new gen does look like the real deal and perfect improvement. Hope ppl buy these. They're such fun and easy to live with cars.
Yeah, when I learned to drive manual I wasn't taught to use the handbrake like he mentions info this video. And we had plenty of hills where I grew up.
We had a crazy snowy and cold winter in Canada this year. My brz did pretty well, with snow tires of course. There were some uncomfortable situations especially driving on snowed in or icy highway, the light weight plays against you. But being careful and having traction control on helped me drive through this winter without any problems, even though the car was definately not build for this it did fine
Here in Quebec, I've been driving FRS/BRZ all year round since 2014 and I love my car during winter, it's so much fun !! And driving during a snowstorm, being low means that you don't feel the wind. Of course I didn't lower the car, but stock suspension means you have more ground clearance than an Echo 😂
I also drive my 86 in winter in Canada and in fact I drove rwd car though all the winters (370z Camaro ss). Honestly with good winter tires I never have any problems except in the parking lot with deep snow. I never have my traction control on and it really teaches me with throttle modulation.
@@itchyonion3559 Where do you live? I live in Shawinigan and there's always snows here... much more than when I lived in montreal... I'm not sure how confortable I'd be driving a RWD on snowstorm days...
@@Rastaboulotte Montreal and Ottawa, I was literally on highway during the biggest snowstorm. I think as long as don’t get stuck on your driveways then you should be fine. Also be careful with the throttle if you don’t have your tc on. I think it’s manageable with good winter tires, especially at low speed you will not find it scary at all
Thank you, so much, for talking about winter tires vs drive type. I'm in SLC, and have driven rear wheel drive sports cars with winter tires through all conditions. It felt so much more controlled than when I drove AWD cars with all-seasons.
I went from a 2013 FRS to a 2006 Cayman S and am considering a 2022 GR86 next. I’d be very interested to see this compared to a 987. Thanks for the great content!
I sold my Porsche 2009 Boxster S which is a 987.2 it had a PDK transmission and I had all season continentals on it. I bought a 2022 Gr86 manual transmission. One of my main reason for this was having the ability to recline the seat in the GR 86 and having easy access to the rear seat area for luggage food etc. The GRE 86 kicks into a slide much easier than the boxer ever did and the Porsche being an S model with 310 horse was definitely quicker and faster ,but the GR 86 has plenty of power so I’m fine there.
Todd Smith While my Cayman (110k miles) may be my favorite car I’ve ever owned there are things I miss about about my old FRS. Besides how much fun it was to have the tail step out in a a controlled manner and the obvious practicality of having a foldable back seat, I miss track days. The 987.1 is known for oil starvation issues and is a real gamble on the track. There are fixes but taking the cost and risk into consideration along with the lack of a LSD, the risk out ways the reward. The improved performance of the already track ready GR86 along with a warranty makes for a compelling consideration for the GR86 at its price point.
I might switch from a 07 Cayman S too if the GR86 lives up to the hype when I drive it. So far no dealer is giving out test drives as any car they receive is already sold as a pre-order
Question for a future video, after the weather gets warmer and the shocks get more compliant: Because Paul and Todd have praised the Fiesta ST repeatedly and have driven it quite a bit, I'd be interested to hear how they compare its ride to the GR86's. I've had a FiST as a daily driver for five years and still love it, except for its ride, which can be punishing on bad urban roadways especially. The one current car I'd considering dumping the ST for is the GR86, but only if it rides better. Also, please keep us posted on your real-world MPG.
Even though the GR Corolla is coming to Canada I've decided to go with the GR86. Time for a naturally aspirated vehicle this time around. Still have to wait awhile here though, till around late 2022
Dont forget, You'll need to review and compare the GR86 to the soon announced GR Corolla! I think i have my mind set on this with the same color! It stands out, performs at its best, and is very customizable. Would be my first. Great reviews as always. Very informative and fun.
Just bought a miata rf, first car daily(I usually only drive to work), other than not fitting for you guys was there anything else you wouldn't want the miata for? Also kinda learning manual lol, day 1 had to had someone drive it home, day 2 went out figured it out for the most part I only stalled once and that was the beginning of figuring it out, gonna figure this out or die trying. My 2 cars were brand new 86 or 2019-new miata rf, i fit in both fairly well so that was never an issue, and as someone whos been driving a kia forte the only problem I have with the miata so far is the back up camera is pretty bad, its usable but its not great.
You'll get it in no time. It took me a couple months before I really felt comfortable (self-taught, Honda Fit). The RF Miata is an amazing car; don't feel like you are missing anything by choosing the Miata over the 86 (besides maybe the back seats).
Ooo, ahhh...the engine sound after the fake engine noise was turned off. Todd you are spot on; that car doesn't need an "exhaust" to give it character. It has induction sound, which is all you really need! I want to listen to the sound of combustion in process, not the obnoxious noise it makes after it's finished.
I suspect you have one available, but if you need a first generation Cayman for a comparison run, you are welcome to use mine. 2006 Cayman S that I picked up for a little less than the new GR86. Love the Cayman, but it would have been a little harder decision if there were more 86’s available. (Located in the Salt Lake area.)
@@EverydayDriver Yes! I want to see that comparison! Had a 1st gen BRZ that I loved, am now in an E85 Z4 just like yours (I bought it before you did your series on it. 😄), and now seriously contemplating if my next car will be a used 1st gen Cayman or a new 86.
Totally agree on the natural sound. I disabled the fake sound on mine and I'm so much happier. The car actually sounds great and it is now a joy to rev out the engine
Love mine, but its in automatic. I wish it was a manual, but I couldn't find one & it just doesn't make much sense for me, living in LA. Maybe I'll get a manual a few years down the road if I find a used one for cheap.
@@ormand3000 haha yeah like move out of LA or somehow get property with enough space for a daily driver + a for fun manual... 🙄I'm just glad I'm in a fun car for once and out of my econobox for a cheap price. Not to mention that the GR86 I got seemed to be literally the last one in the whole of Southern California. Sure, let me just get a manual 86 even though they don't exist in a 300 mile radius of me.
I used to have a Ford E150 van with a Winnebago conversion on it. It was really heavy. We moved to Colorado and wanted to use it to take the family skiing, but it was terrible in the snow. I put a mid priced set of snow tires on it and it was great. We never had any problem driving it in the snow after that. I was really shocked how well the tires made it drive in the snow.
Great video thanks guys, this car continues to impress. You might not need an exhaust, but every Subaru boxer should have UEL headers, that Subie rumble is too good to miss out on.
Hey, so you and I talked Toyotas and specifically about your GR86. This morning this video was on my homepage. Glad to have found your channel would love to see the car next time I am around!
I have a 2005 legacy NA, and it sounds similar to that car. I love it to be quiet cruising and when you trash it, it come to live... but I recently changed the transmission mount for a group N and the noise has increased (mainly casue of vibrations) and it´s so so good... even mine it´s not so sporty ahahahahh. Love your videos guys!!!
As someone who owed a 2016 Scion FR-S I loved the fact that possibly being the only RWD car on the winter roads I as passing AWD/4WD cars doing normal highway speeds with snow tires only time I would get stuck was in my own driveway because the snow wasn’t cleared.
Thank you for giving advice for first time manual drivers. If more people talk about it like this, then there's more drivers willing to consider manual transmission.
I just got mine. I am an older dude. I like the engine sound as is. Maybe I will change my mind. I don't want a fart can exhaust and draw attention. Gives me the feeling without people looking at me like I am having a mid life crisis.
If anyone has a GR86 or BRZ and is thinking about getting a catback do yourself a favor and go Corsa. I got it installed today and it’s insane. Great sound, super deep, and pops on low rpm downshifts. Loud cold starts but not the loudest for this car.
Great video as always! It’s a pleasure to watch your channel you guys really know about cars, being a car and off road enthusiast myself I can appreciate it. The reviews you do are based on real use and application of the vehicle(s). Keep up it up. Cheers from Toronto, 🇨🇦
Thank God someone said it. Power and 0-60 do not equal fun. One of the most "FUN" vehicles I have ever owned was a 1990 Suzuki Sidekick which weighed only 2200lbs, only had 80hp, 95lb/ft torque, and a 5spd manual. It was dog slow by todays standards and you had to kind of beat on it when you accelerated away from stop lights and it loved. Throw the top back and bang through the gears on a sunny day and that truck was just a blast. Or on a winter day leave it in 2wd and get a little squirrely with the back end around corners or in parking lots in the snow and just grin from ear to ear. I loved that thing, even more than many of the V8s I've owned.
I’ve been daily driving an ND1 Miata for almost 4 years, and I still love it. No it isn’t very fast. It feels fast sometimes because you’re sitting so low. But there is something to be said for cars like these, where you wring out 2nd or even 3rd hear in the street without worrying about getting your license taken away. Faster cars can be fun, but you’re at or above the speed limit so quickly the fun is over before you even get a chance to enjoy the moment. By the way, when I said daily driver I meant in the snow and ice in NE Ohio, too. A set of Blizzaks and winter wheels have been worth every dime. Why limit the fun to just the summer months?!
You nailed it - I had a 1990 Miata with over 250K miles on it and even though it was by no means fast, it was fun to drive and felt quick because of it sitting so low and being so snappy around corners. I went from that to a 2017 Fusion Sport and while the Fusion Sport is more like my old VR-4, getting the same level of fun out of it will get you arrested fast. Light-weight, RWD, low-sitting cars are just plain fun. Sure, you're not going to win drag races against V8s or turbocharged modern sports cars, but if you are the customer for one of these, you already know that and it's not what you're looking for anyways.
If you guys are bringing up the Supra 2.0 and a used Cayman, why not the 230i M-Sport. That's what I'm trading my Veloster N for. The N is fun in the right circumstances but it's a plastic box that's a horrible daily/commuter. I traded my FR-S for the N for the same reasons. Live and learn. I wish we all had the time/money/space for a weekend car. If I did I would pick the GR86 over the N, GTI, CTR, and Supra 2.0 for sure. Looking forward to more vids with this car. Keep it up!
Such beauty full scenery I want to leave Seattle and live there. I’m sure the money I make at a job will go much further over there than here in Seattle. This is Utah right ? What part exactly of Utah is this?
I bought my Focus ST new in 2014, has 128k miles now and love it. This might be the next car. Mine is tuned with 360lbs of torque, I think the one thing I'd miss, outside of storage space.
Really loving the new generation, I’ll build up my gen 1 because it’ll be easier on my finances. If I can snag a cheap one later in it’s R&D phase I wouldn’t mind. I also have to get a bigger car for work so can’t go from a sports car to a sports car. Thank you for the updates on the new gen.
In regards to hill start assist, at first i thought it was so stupid. It wasn't intrusive enough to figure out how to turn it off, and i ended up growing fond of it. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for the honest review. I'm planning to buy it soon, maybe a 2024 or 2025. This review along with others helped me a lot. Thanks again.
Someone from Canada here. And I can confirm winter tires or snow tires as they’re also known are a must. Nokians are great I might give them a try. Two vehicles I have are on Bridgestone Blizaks. Anyway that’s all folks
I moved from the mountains of Colorado 6 months ago after 20 years of high country living (8000 plus feet), you guys kind of make me miss it...kind of...
I agree about the Winter tires. I swap Winter and Summer tires on my '15 BRZ and I drive it year round with total confidence. I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4s in the Summer and I currently have Pirelli Sottozero's for Winter. Any good high performance Winter tire will turn a GR86/BRZ into a confidence inspiring snowmobile. It definitely beats my Subaru Forester on All-Seasons.
I never used handbrake when learning manual, and we had some very steep hills in town. I just release the clutch to the friction point, and that holds the car so you can get to the gas smoothly.
Its Gentoo/Arch of the cars
Agreed. I'm not a hybrid or EV guy. I think I'll buy one while I still can. Thanks.
Getting one for my daughter, looks good and its slow and safe
pretty sure you have not driven a new mini cooper because that is the perfect car for women and men who dont want to be overcomplicated.
Wow. I didn't expect the engine sound remove to sound so much better. I thought the sound deadening would result in something quieter
The actual engine sound was way better, to my ear it had a bit more of a growl to it.
Very pleased to hear you enjoyed it so much. Thanks for watching!
Less is More!
Thanks for covering the power at altitude. I don't think everyone realizes how important of a consideration this is when you live above 5000'.
How does altitude affect a car? I never knew about this
@@xx_jason_xx5568 The general rule of thumb for naturally aspirated (NA) engines is 3% power loss for every 1000' of elevation.

Thank you!! I hope it works when my gr86 is delivered!!!
First thing I'll do when mine gets delivered, right on the dealer lot too lol
It was also easy to disable on the FRS even though that wasn't digital

This "horsepower does not equate to driving enjoyment" diatribe is spot on!
Glad it resonated with you. Thanks for watching.
As a 1st gen car owner of one of the twins, so glad you guys are doing this!
No issues.
After driving a BRZ and S2000 in the midwest since 2013, I can tell you any rwd vehicle with proper snow tires will do just fine in snow.
My IS300 with LSD and all seasons even handles the snow amazingly. Had it for 6 years and live in the midwest. Like they said though ground clearance of big icy rocks is the only thing to take note of.
i daily my 86 in a near Alpine region which sees a bit of snow in the winter months and even with the shitty old snow tires it worked, sideways but it worked, went to work no problem.
my favorite experience was driving to work out of my hood onto the main way where the bus stop is and everyone is waiting for the bus and i turn onto the main road infront of them and the tail end comes lose and i look like an absolute maniac, grinning like the weird cat from alice in the wonderland.
i didnt even want to do it but man...those slides are sooo controllable and once it happens i just cant stop grinning.
nope
@@AlexSchwartzATV Same experience with my IS300!
I honestly wasn’t looking at the GR86/BRZ but man after doing more research, the very good point of “more horsepower doesn’t mean more fun”, and looking at that beautiful model y’all are driving, I think I really have to consider this one now if it is available near me anytime soon
there's a limit, where 'no horsepower means no fun', but otherwise yeah
YES! Do a Cayman vs GR86 Head-to-Head!
Not an issue at all when driving flat out, though.
ayyy, its zygrene
I haven't had this issue at all on my BRZ. I found at first I was leaving my foot on the gas a 1/2 second too long which made it seem like there was rev hang, but after testing and adjusting the issue is gone. Could also just be minor differences car to car though
Oh hey it's Zygrene :D
Also, from listening to your last video, the sound piping present could help hear the engine in some track situations.
Yeah. I have an 80 hp 914. It is sooooo fun!
I disagree with you, but I've also had some modern manual hondas and those have ATROCIOUS rev hang. This is not noticeable in comparison

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥An outstanding real world review. You all are literally repeating what made the 86 so special in Japan and Initial D.
I can really appreciate the adverse driving conditions you live & drove in using the 86. Great info sharing how we can getthe best exp out of hearing the actual engine sounds
Wow I love those gold wheels. Compliments the obsidian blue so nicely!
You can tecnically buy the 2016 and up Camaro with a 3.6L V6, LSD, and 6MT and the MSRP is $28,000, the same price as a base 86.
@@JacesOwnWorld A great handling toy though.
A 6th gen ss1le is probably even better
I'm so so so glad you went GR86 over BRZ.
I'll just say what everyone else is thinking: The BRZ grill is a goofy smile that just keeps getting goofier.
To the point where I'm pretty sure Subaru makes its smile goofier every time they redesign so everyone will think they're not serious about this collab. Good on Toyota for taking the future of Naturally-Aspirated sportscars seriously. The GR grill is much much MUCH more aggressive and beautiful.

In regards to your statement about not agreeing with people that say they can't own a RWD car due to snowy weather - you're 100% correct. I used to have a MR2 with snow tires in the US Northeast. Handled perfectly fine in snow. I wouldn't hesitate to daily a newer RWD car year round.
Antonio, would you mind sharing your reasons for moving away from the Cayman? Maintenance costs?
Ok, you guys are selling me on one of these.
I hope that one day you two will come across an old school AE86👍
Even though the GR Corolla is coming to Canada I've decided to go with the GR86.
Time for a naturally aspirated vehicle this time around.
Still have to wait awhile here though, till around late 2022
Dont forget, You'll need to review and compare the GR86 to the soon announced GR Corolla! I think i have my mind set on this with the same color! It stands out, performs at its best, and is very customizable. Would be my first.
Great reviews as always. Very informative and fun.
Is it “fake engine” noise or the actual engine noise being amplified?
If it is the latter, fine by me:)
I plan on ordering one in Steel
literally been teching myself manual the past week and im planning on getting a 2024 gr86, this video i think solidifies my decision thanks guys
Glad you are learning. We bet you’ll love the GR86. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for offering up you car. We might need it!
@cdavisUT Can you send us an email at everydaydrivertv@gmail.com - thanks so much! Paul
Hey Chris, we’re interested in working with you-thanks for the offer. Send us an email at everydaydrivertv@gmail.com
Totally agree on the natural sound. I disabled the fake sound on mine and I'm so much happier. The car actually sounds great and it is now a joy to rev out the engine
Milesfathi did you disable it same as they did in the video or via some other method?
I'm looking forward to checking one out. This could be the next car. Or, we'll see what the GR-Four brings to the table. :D
GR Four?
While I can get one yet, this has totally sold me on getting one. Man it looks fun!
Love mine, but its in automatic. I wish it was a manual, but I couldn't find one & it just doesn't make much sense for me, living in LA. Maybe I'll get a manual a few years down the road if I find a used one for cheap.
You should have done whatever you had to do to get a manual transmission. An automatic BRZ is a sad thing.
@@Shoelid sounds to me like the problem here is living in California by your own admission 🤷♂️
@@ormand3000 Didn't ask to be born here 🙄🙄🙄
I used to have a Ford E150 van with a Winnebago conversion on it.
🤢 leave that to the WRX boys..
@@patrickbateman7122 WRX boys haven’t been able to rumble in some time now due to the FA20 / twin-scroll turbo setup on the newer gens
@@brettlarson912 i didn't know that tbf 🤣👍
@@brettlarson912 you can get uels for it.
@@patrickbateman7122 Hey, you put on the Gold wheels! I'd argue that your GR 86/BRX is an NA WRX Coupe.
I am glad that both of you are tall. I have really been considering this car and now I know that I will fit.
Stop making me want to buy one of these! ...So....hard....to .....resist
Hey, so you and I talked Toyotas and specifically about your GR86. This morning this video was on my homepage. Glad to have found your channel would love to see the car next time I am around!
Glad you found it. Cool to meet you and thanks for watching!
Stop convincing me to buy a new car.. I told myself I would never buy a new car.
Voting with your wallet couldn't come at a better time... show manufacturers that the enthusiast market wants cool stuff
I’m 6.3 too! It helps a lot to know this info!!
I’ve got to get that speaker turned off, but was wondering if the car would be too quiet. Thanks for making that one of the first changes!
Had mine for a week and I absolutely love it . I also own a 2020 STI which I love. Two totally different cars but both are perfect to me
I have a 2005 legacy NA, and it sounds similar to that car.
This is what I want as my first sports car. The light blue and the golden tires match perfectly together.
I agree!!! This the first time I'm hearing the in cabin exhaust note turned off. Definitely rather it off and hearing the real engine sound
Loud cold starts but not the loudest for this car.
i'm looking so I can turn off the active sound, where and how much was it?
Great video as always! It’s a pleasure to watch your channel you guys really know about cars, being a car and off road enthusiast myself I can appreciate it. The reviews you do are based on real use and application of the vehicle(s). Keep up it up.
Cheers from Toronto, 🇨🇦
This is great, my biggest worry was snow. I cant get enough of this car, MORE PLEASE.
Keep it up!
I've been driving my FRS in Alaska for 8 years. It's works just fine in winter weather.
Thanks for watching!
Someone from Canada here. And I can confirm winter tires or snow tires as they’re also known are a must. Nokians are great I might give them a try. Two vehicles I have are on Bridgestone Blizaks. Anyway that’s all folks
I moved from the mountains of Colorado 6 months ago after 20 years of high country living (8000 plus feet), you guys kind of make me miss it...kind of...
i just got mine last week, and i LOVE IT. Trueno Blue Premium Manual. ill have to take mine to the dealer to disable that speaker.
Great video as always! I love the winter tire comments. I had an FR-S with 4 snow tires and drove around update NY with no problems!
I'm looking forward to the Spring time reviews too
I never used handbrake when learning manual, and we had some very steep hills in town. I just release the clutch to the friction point, and that holds the car so you can get to the gas smoothly.
The color and the gold wheels - just perfect!
