The fact that the Miata has never been out of production should tell people something. That shows you how good of a car it always has been, also the fact that Mazda doesn't use parts from the parts bin for the suspension and other parts shows the dedication they have towards the Miata. Most companies today won't even make a sports car on their own.
@@Sinancan93 the miata is def a sports car. It may not be the sports car for everyone, because its not focused on performance as stock. but a quick investment into tires and suspension this thing turns into a scalpel in the turns.
@@Sinancan93 they arent the same car I agree but because of price range and mostly that people are going to cross shop between the 2 always, it has to be compared. but their conclusion is on the money. Get the miata if you want to open air experience, get the 86 if you want more usability
Idk about you guys, but every Miata I've seen in Canada are high trim from models worth 40k plus. Most FRS/BRZs I see are below 40k, and in the end that really says alot more about affordability than looking at MSRP. My buddy couldn't find a Miata below 40k for over a year now, meanwhile a base model or higher trim brz are all available below 40k CAD. All I'm saying is I do not consider new miatas affordable, nor does the price point make any sense to me
@@invertedv12powerhouse77 Seems to be the opposite here in the US. It’s common knowledge here that almost every single car is experiencing some sort of shortage and price increase, except the Miata. There’s lots of articles about how the Miata is really the only car that isn’t being price gouged.
@@hotdogstandman there's just no low trim models here. All high trim 40k-58k. And that's in Quebec and Ontario, I know Ontario has laws about upselling
@@hotdogstandman UKNOW is right I bought a new Club RF in late September for a very fair price below MSRP. A friend bought one a few weeks ago and he got a good deal as well. He looked at the 86/BRZ twins but the markup was eye watering.
These two cars are honestly the most refreshing breaths of fresh air in the current performance car landscape. They don't care about impressing with spec sheet numbers or setting lap records. They just give you the timeless sports car formula and tell you to have fun. Cars like these used to be so common in the 80s and 90s and now they're all gone, but their spirit perseveres in these worthy successors.
I'm amazed the ND Miata is six years old and still looks so good; I think it's going to be a true classic. That said, as an ND2 owner, your conclusions are spot on: as a toy, the ND2 is hard to beat for the price; but as a car, the GR86 is a compelling all-rounder.
If Mazda made it with a hard roof (that you cant retract) then there would be enough space to make it similarly practical in my opinion. But I doubt most people looking into MX5 are doing so to have it as their main/only car. Only I can be that stupid :D its big enough to do some grocery shopping, it will take a girlfriend/wife with you on a short trip...thats enough practicality for a 2nd car in the family in my opinion - in my case the only car to have because Im not planning on buying another 1.9tdi octavia xD
@@MisoElEven been dailying my 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata for the past year and it's been pretty good all-around. Took it on a 2500km trip in 5 days, and that was a blast. Except it was painfully uncomfortable when it wasn't fun 🤣
@@MisoElEven That's my only hang up with the Miata. It's soft top. And the RF is a better compromise, but still I do not like convertibles. It's like a slab of metal with a windshield.
I have a 2022 GR86 in trueno blue, manual. I have to say it is the most fun I have ever had in a car. I don’t mean to sound emotional but I have had a crap car my entire life and I have saved for years to buy a car I love since I make very little money. I almost cry every morning knowing that I bought this car cash and I get to drive it everyday. The insurance is only $86 a month (what are the odds lol) and the mileage isn’t too bad. Yet I get to have fun with anything I do. Turning off traction control and getting a little silly in an empty parking lot always puts a smile on my face. It’s so comfy and rewarding. Sorry for the rant but I have nothing bad to say about this car. Truly an amazing car for the price.
Been waiting for this one! ND2 owner myself, and it's my daily. Honestly for 99.9% of normal daily activities, it's plenty practical. I was never a convertible guy, and only went with the soft top to epitomize the lightweight characteristic of the car--but now that I've spent a lot of time with it, I have to say it adds a ton to the overall experience. S2000, twins, or ND, you're going to have a good time regardless of the one you're sitting in. Buy one and enjoy, you won't regret any of them.
Maybe it's because they had a fast back and not a true convertible but they underestimated the fun factor of having no roof by a long shot. I've owned a BRZ and I sold it for a Miata. Instantly was kicking myself for not buying a convertible 10 years ago. '13 BRZ and '13 Miata were nearly dead even in drag races (I had both for a short period) but the Miata felt faster and more enjoyable at any speed because of the soft top. I really enjoyed the BRZ but haven't looked back once.
ND2 RF owner here. It’s my daily up in Massachusetts so I got the hard top for the winter. Just got some top down time for the first time in a month and man does it make a difference! However, even with the roof up, the Miata is just a more engaging street car to me. My seat time in the twins is pretty limited, so take that with a grain of salt.
@@CattyScout If you look at their past videos, you'll see that they've driven plenty of convertibles, including all generations of the Miata. But I understand what you're saying, I've experienced cars featuring Targa configurations (as well as T-tops, etc.) and while I think they're great, they simply don't provide the full sensation of a true convertible (of which I've owned three in my lifetime, dating back to my first car). Despite my enthusiasm for them, I try to keep in mind that not everyone truly enjoys convertibles. Though I find this somewhat surprising, it's sort of like those people who just don't like dogs. Frankly that's almost unthinkable to me, but then maybe they were bitten when they were younger, or had some other sort of bad experience. Whatever, the reality is that we don't all like the same things.
As a former S2000 owner, I wish Honda would make a new one. When that car just came out and I was young, I had the time of my life with it, and I was still in college. 😂 The warm summer nights driving it top down, the girls I had in it, oh the memories and nostalgia. 😭 Now I'm a middle-aged man with responsibilities. 😭
While both are great lightweight (compared to contemporary vehicles anyways) my heart goes to the Miata because it can go topless. The roof off about any car just makes it that much more exciting!
@@rvs8238 lol, i have the miata actually am just saying 30k aint affordable. They try to justify the price but your a fool if you think these cars are worth 30k let alone more money!
There aren’t any comparable options in today’s car market at this price. This is also true of the used car market right now as well, as they will cost as much or even more than a new car. This magnifies the significance of the BRZ/86 being available at $29k, which is what my base model came in at.
Having driven the 1st gen 86 and owned an ae86, I can definitely say that this second gen has that tight Toyota feeling that the ae86 had and the 1st gen 86 was lacking. Also, the gr86 just looks right in terms of proportion when u see it in person. It definitely passes the vibe of a well engineered car.
@@Deschain-um7jz most people don't like the ''boxy'' look of 80's cars, I just love them. ae86 has the best shaped body I've ever seen in a car (your Celica is awesome as well). Unfortunally I had to sell my ae86 a couple of years ago. I do however have an 88 rx7 thats very clean (resembles the initial D from the first season). I probably get more looks in my rx7 than people driving ferraris and things like that, just timeless boxy design for the win.
The Miata RF has a retractable hardtop, so it can be driven with comfort in the winter, and the top off for summer. It just seems way more exciting to me than the GR86. I like that the Miata is smaller, and looks more like a baby Ferrari as you said. The sleek lines and angles appeal more to me. Nothing against the GR86, but when compared to the Miata, it just appears to be more bloated looking. Of course, this is all just personal taste and opinion. Both are great cars, and we're all just splitting hairs at this point.
The Miata is a better looking car. It's cooler and a convertible. A lot more cool points. But it's less practical and costs more. I think depending on what a person is shopping for the decision isn't that difficult. Having a midlife crisis? Just get the miata.
2020 ND2 RF owner. I Love it. When you go through your mid-life crisis, you aren't looking for practical. You're looking for FUN! Driving in the summer at sunset with top down, radio on. I'll take the long way home 😀 I'm lucky that I work from home and my wife has her car, so we make it work. I store the Miata in winter and can't wait until spring time.
@@TucsonDude 18 years old and you had a brand new Miata? I wish I were that lucky. Miata is not the kind of car you have when raising a family with 3 kids. For that a minivan is always the answer.
@@ckohlermn I've owned sports cars all my life. Many were junkers, but I kept moving up the food chain of cars. My point is that a sports car is always not a sign of a midlife crisis.
Had a '13 FRS. Great car looking for an engine. Characterless and if you told me it made 150 hp and 120 ft/lbs of torque? I'd believe you. New chassis reminds of RX8 rigidity with a much better engine. If you told me it Makes 250 horsepower and 200 ft/lbs of torque? I'd believe you. They nailed it. Love my '22 BRZ
Actually on a dynp test the new gr86 makes on average 47 more horsepower than the first gen and 46 more foot lbs of torque, so if they would have rated the new cars power the same way they did they old car it would have around 250 hp and a little over 200 ft/lbs of torque
I really like the GR86, but I think the Miata is the most focused of the two. I own a Miata myself, and it is such a special car, specially with the top down. It makes you smile, it gives you a tan, and for some reason people turn their heads as you drive by. Yeah you only get two seats, and it is not the most practical, but it is the one I chose. It is my only car, and I hope it lasts forever. I may get a used GR86 when the prices come down, but I already have a fun car.
I own an ND2 RF and I would choose it every single time over the 86. The 86 feels discernibly larger and the Miata looks better. That said, it may be easier for me to say because I have a second vehicle and I don't disagree with anyone for taking the 86. I'm just glad they make these cars for us, with three pedals and a stick.
naaah, the GR86 looks better, that's not saying th ND looks bad, but the proportions are sleeker on the toyota. The Miata truly looks like a toy car being so short.

I know what I'm going to say is sacrilegious, but I've driven many different iterations of the Cayman and last week drove the GR86. The latter is more fun, mainly as it is willing to rotate and play. The Cayman has more grip but is more sterile, and ultimately more serious. The GR86 is the goldilocks between the Cayman, new GTI and Miata.
There's no way to convince someone that I'm not being biased, but I've got a 2018 BRZ (manual with the shorter final drive, performance pack with the Sach dampers), my dad has a 987 Cayman, and I've Turo-ed a 981 Boxter S for some L.A. canyon driving, and I find the BRZ to be the most fun in the twisties (when going straight/on highway, of course the flat 6 is preferable). Last line "The next best thing, while still giving you.... usability". That's the difference. When I was younger, I owned a Toyota Celica, Nissan 240sx, Eagle Talon AWD. Having tiny back seats that fold down makes a car more usable. If I was that age now, I could see getting an 86/BRZ. I now own an ND2 RF as a daily driver because the wife has a sedan and the kids are moved out. If just driving fun is the priority and usability isn't the priority, then why get the "next best thing"?"
I’ve daily driven my ND1 for 3.5 years, and it’s practical enough, but it helps my wife has a midsize SUV for trips, Costco runs, or buying a piece of furniture, lol. I am seriously interested in the new GR86, but honestly it will be hard to top my Miata.

I kept on trying Miata’s old and new. I really wanted one but they are so tight fitting for me. Then, in December I saw a GR86 for the first time. I am ecstatic about having an 86.

Just bought and ND2. Learned manual on it. Loving every second. Would have considered 86 more, but my area has no availability for it. I was pretty much 50/50 on both and went for what was easier to find at a good deal (no markup) I dont think you can go wrong with either if you are in the market for a car like this
I don't have a dog in this fight, but as an older sports car fan I can say that I'm glad both of these options exist for new car buyers today. While the new kid in town always generates a lot of interest, it seemed pretty obvious to me that Paul and Todd were really enthusiastic about both of these cars. In the end, it all comes down to individual preferences. I'd likely enjoy the ND2 (soft-top version) the most simply because I'm a big roadster fan.

The new one is certainly interesting, and I'll definitely be test driving one when I have a bit more free time. I will say though, having owned the RF now for 3 years, I have no problems having it as my only car. If you ever need more room, just call an Uber. What it does for you on everyday drives though is hard to replace without a convertible. The car is just so responsive. Body roll is a bit on the heavier side, but it just makes you feel like you're more on edge. The BRZ at the time felt so much more planted, but it didn't feel more lively. Confident yes, but playful, not as much.

I'm in the process of getting a GR86. I've wanted one ever since scion died and Toyota face-lifted the first generation in 2017, and when they debuted this current one, I said I'm all in. I've only ever drive fwd and awd cars, this will be my first rwd true sports car. The fact the premium model has some nice creature comforts like heated seats and mirrors make it good enough to be my only car, especially in PA winters.

I've been watching a tonne of GR86 reviews and this was a nice contrast of opinions, good to see the positives on the Miata as well but I liked the point made about each car being an only car.
Can’t go wrong with either car. The fact that the Miata still gave a new production car trouble being 6 years old is actually very impressive. Can’t wait to see what Mazda comes out with next.
I think the hosts of the video are correct that the ND Miata will go down as one of the unique and "just right" cars in a few decades. If it is 6 years old, with minor revisions along the way, and still at the top of its class against brand new competition revisions that is very impressive. It will be interesting to see if we get another generation of Miata and what it does.
Love my 2020 86 (especially with a header and tune), but we absolutely would have ended up with a Miata if it weren't for the fact that my wife couldn't fit both her feet and a purse in the passenger footwell. That hump in there just killed it :(
Yes, for me that was one of the drawbacks to a Miata. No place to put your jacket, purses, and any incidentals you'd want up front with you on a longer drive (other than the footwell.) That and it was really noisy in the interstate. So, I found a great deal on a new '17 BRZ Ltd with Performance Package (Brembo brakes, different wheels, Sachs dampers) and put a Borla axle back on it. It's been great fun. I appreciate it every time I get in and drive. I'm sure the MIata would have been fun too, and it has some plusses, but it would have spent more time in the garage while I took the SUV. Looking forward to trying the next gen though.

The closest price competitors are the base EcoBoost Mustang and Camaro Turbo convertibles that start at 33K but sacrifice interior and features. All these options are significantly heavier cars that are worth considering but provide a significantly different driving experience on top of being more expensive.
Both of these cars are beautiful. I really like the changes to the 86. I think it looks a lot better. And this new generation of the MX5/RF is the best looking one yet.
As an ND2 Miata Owner, I agree that the miata is not the more practical one. 86 does everything and everything so well. BUT!! the top down fun is also something that the GR86 is missing, something you will really appreciate when you actually experience it. So overall, I'd say the final score of this battle is 10:10 . You can't go wrong with either one. However, GR86 is cheaper, so it's the best bang for your buck sports car in the market right now. Great comparison, thanks Todd and Paul for the amazing production.
Tremendous video... Great discussion and beautiful visuals as well. Would love to be able to hear the GR86 (you gave us a bit of this in the exterior drive by shots) so that we can gauge how the car sounds without the fake engine note from the speakers (I think you guys used to do audio-only B-reel videos). I think you guys are pretty spot on. I own a 2019 MX-5 (ND2) as my only personal vehicle and it is everything I want it to be. The biggest draw for me is the convertible soft top which there is no competition for in the price segment. I have a large family and the only way this works for us is having teenagers with their own vehicles. When we go somewhere as a family, we just take two cars. I would like a different daily driver during the colder winter months here in Georgia, but the Miata is not bad with the top up. For reference, I'm 5'8" and about 160 lbs.
I bought the 2022 MX5 RF fully knowing it's limitations. I bought it to have a true sports car, never expecting it to fill any other role. I wanted something that came close to the 1972 MGB I had as far as pure driving fun and it has done that magnificently. My 535 BMW does just fine with all my other needs. It has a glove box and a real trunk.
The answer is YES after owning both. The 22 GT RF is a spectacular car. No one talks about the great blind spot monitoring, best I have experienced, better than my high end Porsche. The RF makes it simple to put top down on even short trips, fantastic. It is my most fun daily driver. The engine is perfectly tuned to the transmission, you can use all gears within 40MPH and 40+ mpg is easily obtainable and it is hard to get less than 33 around town even with spirited driving. The loser may be my new Corvette in the garage, although for pure v8 muscle its hard to beat…
Truly impressed with the new 86. I own a nd2 club convertible w/ brembo bbs package as well as some light track mods at this point. Gotta say I love it. Have for 3 years. That says a lot considering we also own a 718 cayman S with all the options. The Miata is very capable and you can mold it to your desire with some money and drive time. That being said I'm truly intrigued and am for sure going to test drive the new 86. Hopefully on the track when one of my friends buy one lol.
These days (January 2023) the GR86 from a dealer in Germany costs around 45.000€ and the MX5-RF with Sports package is at around 38.000€ when already registered (meaning the guarantee timer already started some months ago). Gone are the days where you could get an mx5 rf for around 28k or the GR86 for 34k.
i currently have a NC as my daily - with the improvements to the new 86 im tempted to switch - though for me its hard to beat that open top roaster experience when you live in a climate that's mostly sunny ☀
Great video, much appreciated. I hope everyone that can afford to buy one of these two goes out and buys one of these. Maybe 7 years from now I can afford one of them. In the meantime, the affordable sports (sporty) car Everyday Driver comparisons demonstrated that for about a third of the money you can have sporty cars that are as good or better in most metrics. I happen to have several that I prefer to these two in one way or another. 1995 - 2005 Were great years for sports and sporty cars!
Had a 16 Miata as a single car, lived with it for 3yrs did long distance, autox, track day, put 60k miles on it, what an awesome experience that was. But I totally agrees, if he calls would I want to go out with him again? The answer is of course yes but yeah I’d ask myself for sure lol
I keep going back to these guys for really great comparos that help inform my vehicle purchases. They are hardcore enthusiasts and when they recommend something you can bet it’s going to be good.
I love my 2020 MX-5 RF and it is my ONLY car! Don't need to share my fabulous ride and I get my big purchases delivered. Do the math.....it's cheaper and less stressful. Retired from IT troubleshooting 10 years ago and am enjoying a carefree Miata lifestyle. The ol' girl just wants to have fun. Miata is always the answer (unless I'm on my sailboat).
There's a lot of us who have been wondering your take on how these two compare. Shoulder season in the mountains is pretty epic! Thanks for a great video.
Oh you guys, watching this had 'The Disease' flaring up. I must be strong; I was planing on keeping my current car(F56 Mini, S, manual) for at least another year. When time comes, I must decide on either a used Alfa Giulia TI to experience the magic of ZF 8-speed in a good sports sedan, or a new GR86..., because manual sports car. Disparate choices, I know, but I need 'One Car to Rule Them All'. This is a great episode, by the way. Holy scenery, Batman!
I started out wanting the new Z (was put on waiting lists) n then looked at BRZ (dealer only had last Gen in showroom, so no test ride). Ended up buying 2022 RF GT as my weekend toy and totally happy with it.
Proper, ARTICULATE, enthusiast content from you guys. Excellent video. I have a ‘23 Supra and am looking to *maybe* sell for something with more usable power. It’s no fun driving the car at 30%…
For 3 years I had a 2008 NC. Put on Koni adjustable struts, shorter springs, upgraded sway bars and end links. Took handling to another level. I live in Minnesota and it was my only car outside of my plow truck. Snow tires in the winter and performance tires in the summer. Every time I hear someone say, "if it's the only car you have...you have to pick another" I think, "you're just not even trying... Plenty of room for groceries, worked for golf, did cross country trips, autocrossed, and used it for work. I sold it and got a 2015 Mustang GT...the Mustang was more convenient, but it wasn't "better". I miss the Miata...
I had an ‘13 FRS for 7 years…. I donno if you guys remember me, you read my question on one of your podcasts about what to choose a WITH A MANUAL TRANS … a Civic Type R, Golf R, or Focus RS…you are the reason I replaced it with my ‘19 Civic Type R!
Glad there’s another car thats as good or even better than the Miata, it just means Mazda will have to do better next generation and the Miata wont die any time soon 🙂

@@GreyCrowe I think that's relative, it just depends if you are ready or legally allowed to make adjustments to your vehicle's interior or exterior. Similar to how many people mod their drive train or interior. Not everyone is willing/ interested/ knowledged to do so, many things can be changed.
Grew up in the '80s driving the GTI , CRX si, and Integra Type S but these cars are taking it to the next level. Problem is the kids from the current generation who never grew up around sports cars and just want to drive boring SUVs.
So true, people of my generation (late 90s early 2000s) are mostly exposed to cars in the form of SUVs and crossovers. Luckily my father loves sports cars, he’s had a few interesting cars.
The main thing the Millennials never got to experience was a manual transmission. Driving using a manual is a complex process requiring skill and judgment, and when done well -- not necessarily fast -- the driver feels a sense of engagement with the car. This is the making of a motorhead. And because an entire generation skipped using a manual as part of learning how to drive, genuine "driver's cars" have become a thing of the past.
@@johntechwriter I don’t know if it’s a complex process but to do it well requires skill for sure. It may be a complex process in North America but in most countries, it’s part of getting a full license.
I had a 2013 FRS for about 5 years and loved it. Added an HKS supercharger and REALLY loved it! Now I drive a 2017 Miata RF, and while I really am happy with this car, it just made me miss my FRS for the first 2 years. With the recall on the FRS where it inevitably has engine failure after “repair” I have to tell myself that I made the right choice by moving on to the Miata. Now, if Toyota makes the GR Corolla anything like the Yaris then I might switch again. (Or if used prices go back down then maybe a Supra? I don’t need a new car though. What am I talking about?! I drive three times a month. So stupid… wait, this is supposed to be an internal thought. Why am I typing still?)
I have exclusively owned only Miatas for the last 26 years as my only car. I have driven cross country, commuted to work in them in a busy city and used them for numerous things. I have never understood the practicality concerns. They have more than sufficient room for two people and accompanying luggage space. They have more than enough room for a single person or couple to go shopping or buy groceries. For anyway bigger, like a TV or refrigerator, well, I get that delivered. I suppose a caveat here is the size of the person. That is something that this video overlooked. I am only 5'9" and the 1st and 2nd gen Miatas (NA/NB) feel like they were made for me. I can understand where someone over 6' may feel cramped, especially if they are packing extra pounds. The 3rd gen (NC) Miata however is a bit larger in the interior and honestly, it feels a little too big to me at times. That just goes to show that having the right sportscar size depends on the person and it is like getting fitted for clothes or shoes. But, anyway, to me the correct Miata to show here is the roadster Club with the Recaro seats (to compare with the GR86 seats and more "sports" oriented tune), not the RF GT. The RF GT is nice and a little more luxurious with the top up. If you have security concerns in the city I can understand the advantage. On the other hand, all my years I have owned only Miatas with a softtop and never have had any issues with security. New Orleans isn't particularly safe and yet, no problems for me. The car jackers seem to go for the people in SUVs, they seem to ignore the Miata. Having a top that goes completely down, not "targa" style" like the RF, is what the roadster experience is all about IMHO, there is simply no replacement for it. Anything else just seems so "vanilla" to me in the driving experience. As far as the GR86 goes, it is a great car. Arguably a better car than the Miata. But which one is the sportscar with the soul and really the entire reason you get a sportscar in the first place? Miata is the only one. The GR86 is a 2+2 coupe. I have never understood the 2+2 idea. The seats are too small for anyone, even children, to fit comfortably in and thus... NOBODY ever uses those rear seats. They are just there for show. You end up folding them down to make room when you want to put more stuff in the car. Just a waste of seat space IMHO. Why not just make the GR86 a proper 2 seat sports coupe? Again, there is no need for rear seats because they are too small for anyone to ever want to ever use them. Doesn't make any sense. Finally, neither of these cars is designed for four people. They are designed for two people. For that, the 2+2 aspect of the GR86 is superfluous and just wastes space, length, weight and cost. And it still doesn't have the soul of the Miata. The Miata has everything two medium size people need, from my experiences and has such an endearing soul that never gets old. Driving to work is fun. For the larger crowd, I suppose I can understand needing something like the GR86... or perhaps a Mustang/Camaro may be an even better fit for those people.
@@kc510 They are extremely rare here in the Netherlands due to the limited run time (2012-2013) and the price. Should’ve test the soft top version (~ 120lbs lighter than RF is is more fun with top down, etc) with Brembo/ Recaro / BBS wheel package. Car is about 35k as equipped.
GR starts at 28 though, at 35k you’re entering Veloster-N and Type R prices. (If you can even find them near msrp!) And those are much more car. Talking about better comfort, features, bigger engines, better tires and usability. With todays markups if you can find a nice Type-R at 35k with low miles, it’s a steal.
Both great options, but I think I’d still prefer something older. A super clean 944, 996, early Miata, M-Coupe etc.. The sound is not inspiring on either one.
I'll take the MX-5 over the 86. Convertible over a little extra livability every time. On the rare instance I might need more space I'll just rent a car for the day.
I recently bought my 21 Miata grand touring. White leather. Soft top in the blue mica pearl. Soft top was the best decision. Love everything about it from the packaging to the style. Just in awe everyday when I see it! I’ve never seen a more beautiful crafted car. IMO

The fact that the Miata has never been out of production should tell people something. That shows you how good of a car it always has been, also the fact that Mazda doesn't use parts from the parts bin for the suspension and other parts shows the dedication they have towards the Miata.

It looks like a performance car. The Miata, while it looks better doesnt.
You have driven an AE86?
The Miata RF has a retractable hardtop, so it can be driven with comfort in the winter, and the top off for summer. It just seems way more exciting to me than the GR86. I like that the Miata is smaller, and looks more like a baby Ferrari as you said. The sleek lines and angles appeal more to me. Nothing against the GR86, but when compared to the Miata, it just appears to be more bloated looking. Of course, this is all just personal taste and opinion. Both are great cars, and we're all just splitting hairs at this point.
I like the 86. Having a convertible doesn't work for me because my wig would come off.
The Miata is a better looking car. It's cooler and a convertible. A lot more cool points. But it's less practical and costs more.

I kept on trying Miata’s old and new. I really wanted one but they are so tight fitting for me. Then, in December I saw a GR86 for the first time. I actually ordered one without ever even sitting in one. A few weeks later I was able to sit it one. I fit! 6’2” and it felt good without any rubbing of my legs on the sides. I am ecstatic about having an 86.
Yeah kinda hard to get in one tho when there isnt a singe dealership out there with one on the lot. Only had to wait 2 months on mine tho so wasnt too bad
I had the hardest time deciding which one I wanted to buy. Ended up with the 2022 BRZ for one specific reason. My golf clubs fit in the trunk with minimal inconvenience. If my finances improve I still want a Miata!
Hows it going? do you have the Miata yet? 👀
My local dealers put 10k markup on new Miatas nowadays. lol insane.
@@puga4202 The dealer here refuses to mark anything up. Got it for base msrp. Cities around were easily 2-3k higher
You should have bought a Honda Fit or a Civic. Reliable, practical, and parts are plentiful and cheap.

19 RF Club as my only car. I was shopping between this and the BRZ at the time, and the dip killed the BRZ for me.
I recently sold my ND soft top because I wanted a quieter ride on the highway. I miss it and might actually buy an RF. The car is just so much fun even when you’re going s”slow”. I use to like to drive just to drive, no destination in mind.

If this is your first rwd and you live in PA (a place where I assume it snows a lot) you’re gonna have to be very careful. Most people who don’t know how to drive rwd often times wreck their cars in the snow

That hump in there just killed it :(
You're so right! Passenger seat space is really poor in the MX5. Thanks for watching!

Both the ND2 and the GR86 are great cars for their class. I have an ND2 and had an NC2. I love my ND2. My favorite car I've ever owned. The ND definitely isn't as practical and doesn't have as much power, but when you live in Arizona and have that top down, it can't be beat. Also, remember the ND is on it's way out while the GR86 is on it's way in. Let's revisit this when the 5th gen MX-5 comes out.

The Miata has my heart, but I can only afford one car, and the fact that I can't fit a guitar case in the Miata makes the GR86/BRZ seem like the better fit.

Two things that ABSOLUTELY transform the ND miata. A seat lowering bracket to drop the drivers seat 1.5” and a slightly smaller steering wheel. Those two things are absolute game changers.

@@Storm88000 the 205’s are fine… Bridgestones are less than ideal but a 200Tw 205 is a great match for the miata. Keep in mind that a 205 is more tire width per weight than a GT350. 205 keeps down weight, rolling resistance, and aero drag.
I had an ND2 with those exact mods as you mention but being 6’ it still wasnt enough! With a helmet on, on track, my head would often touch the support piece of the top that sits between the A and B pillars (soft top). I did drive a new GR86 and it's pretty darn good, but the fact that it has a roof is exactly why I don't want one.
Great comparison, thanks Todd and Paul for the amazing production.

These are some of the most gorgeous shots I've ever seen in a car review video. Nice work!
Another great video, thank you! Would love your take on these new cars vs old cheaper alternatives like the 986 boxster, z3 and so on.

Having owned the first brz/86… that’s always the winner for me. It’ll win your heart for sure!
God dammit Paul - your Rachel Ray, Food Network, Jazz Club descriptions of car topics are so funny to me. Keep up the good work guys.

Lol
Never realized the 86s were that cheap in the US/ Canada. In western Europe it's a $60/70k car.
Does anyone buy them?!
USD? That's a LOT
@@dielaughing73 if he was talking Euros it would be more expensive since the dollar is less than a euro
@@kc510 They are extremely rare here in the Netherlands due to the limited run time (2012-2013) and the price.
This new generation 86 is probably even more expensive than the previous version of 60k euro. Possibly up to 75k in dollars.
(Lovely taxes)
If I’m not mistaking, the new GR86 also had a limited run time of 2 years.
lmfao Europe is horrible
70k for an economy car with 200hp?
Poor souls
At 25k its a touch high - at 35k for the TRD version its a joke.....at 70k its insulting
I’m 189cm tall and thought ND2 softów would be just a Sunday toy.... Since August 2020 I did 20k km (excluding winter months) and despite having Lexus GS250 and Volvo S60R the MX-5 is me favourit car. I drive whenever I can. Longer trips are no problem. Always top down unless it rains heavily.
I knew a guy, my neighbor actually who sold his V8 Vantage for a miata for the performance of it and just how balanced it was and to all honesty told me the miata was far cheaper to run on track.
im two months into mx5 ownership.
i have seriously never driven a better, more planted , safe, go-kart in my life...and ive driven a vantage, a 296 spyder, a gtr nissan and a lambo guiardo..
its pure fun attached to wicked power...for its size... 55 feels like 90!
love it...
nice review..would need to drive the gr to see if i agree...
Great comparo. Your car to car shots are on POINT.
Both great options, but I think I’d still prefer something older. A super clean 944, 996, early Miata, M-Coupe etc.. The sound is not inspiring on either one.
Another good video comparison. Always surprised when you two agree!
IMO
I just bought the new 86 and I love it. And got it for MSRP which was surprising these days.
A very much awaited comparison and good presentation.
What a video!! I love the 86, and I'm definitely buying a GR86 as my first car!!
You guys are the best team when it comes to cars!
That’s a huge compliment. Thank you! Glad to have you watching!
I am currently an ND2 owner, and it's my only car for now as well. I am considering trading in my car for a GR86! I think this video sum up what I think which Miata is a better handling car but overall considering daily usability GR86 may be the better choice. Nice review!!
Glad you enjoyed this. As you saw here, you can’t go wrong either way but usage is certainly a factor. Glad this was helpful. Thanks for watching!
This is the first time i've watched this channel, and i'm subscribing! These dudes don't let you hanging onto which car they would pick!
