I'd probably still get the GTI. Sure, it's maybe not quite as exciting in some ways, but it fits long torso'd individuals like myself quite well. The seats are great. It's not very attention-grabbing (I prefer the sleeper) and I just like how they drive from the daily driver standpoint.
Light clutch, nice, slick shifter. Surprising amounts of low end torque for a 2L engine. VERY surprising. You can just about drive it like a diesel, which is rather nice for the daily driver situation. And that fancy limited slip when you REALLY try to find the limits, not the 7/10ths driving going on here, makes a world of difference. If you were to truly try to find the limits of adhesion around a corner in these cars, while on the throttle, you might see where a real difference has been made with the GTI.

The round VW body lines are not nearly as attractive and the Civic SI is a great car, but not even in the same league as the VN. I grew up on VW cars and was a big fanboi, but if you take an objective look at all 3 cars in this review, the only thing that holds the Veloster N back is the Hyundai branding. Its the best car hands down. Unreal handling and acceleration. Hyundai clearly gave this car their very best and it shows. Its 50hp above the golf and 70hp over the SI with far better handling and ride quality. If you take brand bias out of the equation its a no brainer.

I really don't understand this comparo...are we basing the comparo off of the semi sporty type of cars for the same basic price range? Other than that, they have nothing in common. The SI is a sedan, the GTI is a Hatchback, and I don't know what the heck the Hyundai is. The N Hyundai here was built to compete against the Honda Civic Type R, not the SI or the GTI. The GTI gets dinged in this video for all the reasons why people buy them. The GTI is not a master of anything, more of a Jack of all Trades. Where as the other 2 cars here just aren't. The GTI is more refined, feels like a premium car trying to compete with economy cars. It just can't. To me, these 3 cars have 3 separate type of buyers. People interested in a GTI isn't gong to look at an Si or a Hyundai N and vise versa. Of the 3 cars here, the GTI is the one car you can put 4 adults in comfortably, haul stuff like moving stuff to your storage unit, or moving furniture because your moving. The Si is good for those that yearn for an R but can't afford one, and the Hyundai N is just the odd duck here. The Hyundai suited for the person that wanted a Civic R but couldn't get one? or maybe the guy that like the Subie STI or Lancer Evo for its crazy looks and think the N will be like one of those? I am not sure🙄 All 3 cars I am sure are great cars, but if your looking for the ONE car that can do pretty much everything and you only can have ONE car?? The GTI makes the most sense in that scenario. If that is the scenario here? I would like to see the Subie STi, Golf R, Hyundai N, and Civic R all in a run...this would be a group of cars that people probably would cross shop. More similar than different and make more sense for a comparo video.

Surprised you found the Civic to have the best ride of the bunch, I would have guessed GTI all day. I had an Mk7 R with the 6 speed, and loved it. Replaced the boat anchor 19" blingy Cadiz wheels with some lightweight 18s and Pilot Super Sports, and it was great. Definitely my favorite-looking car of the bunch as well, but the Velostar would be my pick for sure for something "fun". I've driven the Focus and Fiesta ST and they're both a blast, with the smaller Fiesta being by far the best of the two.
But, how is the Velostar "only a little more money" than the Civic? That sounds like the logic I'd use-- "If I wanted to save money, I wouldn't be buying a car at all". But from a consumer advice standpoint, $4k on such an inexpensive car is a lot of money-- 16% is nothing to sneeze at.

Civic has the essence of japanese thinking. Subtle and balanced. You won't get rewarded with everything right away, you need to go deeper. I thought N was for "Namyang" where the global research HQ is. The N's are going for $34K (DCT?) in my area, which is overpriced for what you get. You must buy new to get the 100k warranty (you get the balance till 60k) which is about the only thing they've got going for it. The SI is cool from an engineering perspective and the only one with a torsen style mech diff, but you'll be doing the clutch in no time and you have to buy the CTR to get a hatch :(. The VW is the practical car you buy if you have to live with it and with some simple mods to the DCT version, makes unbelievable power. It has an iron block and the largest aftermarket community. Who's leaving these things stock? This review is fishy. Do your homework.

For the price, an SI, no doubt, especially if you're someone with not a lot of money like your average 20 year old working at a malls T-Mobile stand, you can pick up a used one that's fairly low mileage for good price. And they're really tuneable.
The veloster is what I would pick if i ever had to get rid of my Fiesta ST(which I won't unless it breaks to a point where I can't fix it). The veloster seems to of done everything right, from ride, to interior, exterior, performance and sound. Everything except those gimmicky doors but if you drive alone most the time like me that doesn't matter.
I appreciate GTIs but they lack personality, they're just soooo boring to me, inside and out, from the looks to the sound. I know you can get an APR tune and make them fast as hell and they have nice interiors but that's where it stops. I guess if you want a quieter, not so good sounding, subdued sporty hatch, like a 40 year old dad, that's the choice.
