Hey ETA, thanks for all you do, it was you who inspired me to build a cabinet. I have a question, my hot key for save state some how got altered. When in game play, Left shoulder button wants to activate the save state to slot 0. I went in retroarch and tried to disable or reassign it so that it don’t interfere with game play. I reassigned it to my coin button, so now I can play games without interference, but it still activates when I add coins. Not sure what to do? I tried assigning multiple buttons but It won’t allow me to. Can you offer any advice? I appreciate it, thank you.
if you mean just going back to the main game choosing section you get when you first start retropie, you just need to press select and start at the same time and it takes you back
MOVING Retropie SAVE STATES to a new Retropie SD card? Here's how! Simply copying the .state files isn't working as of current versions (9/2020). 1. Go to the Retropie/Roms/SYSTEMNAME/ -- copy the .state and .srm files 2. Go to the directory -- opt/ Retropie / configs / SYSTEMNAME / and copy everything there 3. Copy the save states - .state and .srm files to the Retropie/Roms/SYSTEMNAME folder 4. Copy the config files to the opt / Retropie / configs / SYSTEMNAME folder Changing permissions to 777 may also be an issue on the save states. Hope this helps!
Is it possible to change those hotkeys? I want to do this while using an NES style controller. For now I am switching controllers to save while playing NES. It would be sweet to make this a keyboard command as I always have a keyboard plugged into the pi. I mapped my keyboard as a controller but no dice on holding select L or R during game play to save or load
For me it worked with the Nes controller, when you press select together with D-PAD LEFT you will be abble to see the slots then you hold R to save the state or L to load the state
Thank you works great! Only issue I have is on N64 emulation (Mario 64) I cannot see the save slots when hitting "select - dpad" . The saving + loading function does work, but I can't see which slot I'm in. Any tricks to get this to show (resolution settings?)
I play using a keyboard. Are the keys I would use already assigned to saving and loading states, or do I have to assign them myself? If they are already assigned by default, what keys would they be?
after saved , are these slots 1,2,3 valid only for the game in use? I mean, in the video you used these 3 slots for this game, if you want to save another game while playing it, other game that you will be playing will show slots available from the start (1,2,3) or will start empty ones in 4? what happens if I load a saved game slot of this game in another game? thanks!
But what if you have a controller that doesn't have the right and left shoulder buttons. I am playing NES games and trying to save with a SNES controller and this is infurating to me. @@ColdPillowz Wouldn't that be nice? I can probably configure my controller to do that, but I'm never going to get a select switch now, using it as hotkey.
So there's no way to use the game's save function normally? You have to use save states? I tried saving at the save area in Illusion of Gaia and the data wasn't there, I had no issue with it on my Windows PC. One other question, are the save states separate for each game? In other words, will a save state for one game be overwritten by a save state in another?
Russell You can save in game and on states. Essentially, in Emulation Station (assuming you're using that for Retropie), it runs off of Retroarch primarily. You can choose save state slots (I've hotkeyed it to Select + DPad Left/Right on a SNES controller) and save onto that slot. You can choose which slot to load and do that too. However, if you want to save your actual game, all you need to do is navigate to settings and turn on "Save metadata on exit". This allows your console to save all of the changes made (such as saving your game, adding a game to favorites, or fiddling with a config file). Make sure to fully shutdown your system before cutting off power to it, to make sure no data is lost. If that doesn't work, I'll help you further.
And yes, save states are separate for each game. "Save states are 'snapshots' of a game's progress. Save states differ from the save functionality built into most games - because they are produced by the emulator itself, they carry none of the limitations that the game or console may otherwise impose. You can create any number of save states you like, as frequently as you like, and loading them will take you back to precisely where you were in the game when they were taken (even in the middle of a battle or cut scene). You may use a game's built-in save mechanism instead of or in addition to save states, if you like." Essentially, you are suspending a snapshot of the game, not truly saving. I do both to be sure.
My son already started a game and has a lot of progress into it. Is there any way for him to turn on 'save metadata' without jeopardizing his progress?
PrivateJohnGarrett Yes, turning on save metadata will have no effect on his progress whatsoever. It basically means that if you exit Retropie all data will automatically save. It won't affect save games at all (this includes save states and such).
Thank you for your videos, ETA Prime! I tried to create my own mobile RetroPie with a 5" display, PS3 controller, a power bank and an external USB sound card. So far my project is a success but there are two problems I encountered and cannot solve (yet). Maybe they are worth a video or two. My problems: 1. Since the Waveshare 5" 800x480 display does not have an integrated scaler the resolution must be forced via configuration file of the Pi. My Pi will not be used solely for mobile use and thus I like to hook it up with my HD TV from time to time. With this forced resolution the HDMI out does not work anymore. Is there any possibility to let the Pi detect the optimal resolution? There is a function called EDID, which lets you identify your connected display with an identification number and create your own settings for it. Unfortunately, the 5" display lacks this functionality. 2. The headphone jack on the Pi offers awful sound quality. As a workaround I purchased an external USB soundcard and got it working after editing a config file. The bad thing is I have to change the files to get the audio from the HDMI working again. Can the Pi somehow detect whether the external sound card is connected (if so: use it) or not (sound via HDMI)? Any help is appreciated!
So... I tried exactly what you did, but it is not allowing me to save at all. Do I have to set it up the save states in the settings menu or anything or what do I do?
I have an SNES original controller and I'm trying to save on Donkey Kong Country , and I've done the save slot, but when I click the left shoulder and select, it literally does nothing. Please please please help
It doesn't work for me: I don't see that message, so I thought it did safe so I'm trying to load it, but that doesn't work either. Can someone help me out?
He says you should use Select in these button combinations, but the reason he uses Select is because that's set as the Hotkey button on his controller. But your controller might have a different button set as the Hotkey button (like the PS/Xbox button if you're using a PlayStation/Xbox controller). So find out what button you set as the Hotkey and use that in these button combinations instead of Select.
@@LastBastian Are you sure your PS button is the hotkey button? Does it work for quitting a game? If so, then I don't know what the problem could be honestly. It would depend on how your friend set the hotkey controls. There is a way to check which hotkey buttons are used for each controller that's mapped to RetroPie, and to change each controller's hotkey button combinations. It's a bit of a long-winded process but it's the only thing I can think to recommend. It's not too complicated really though once you know what to do. To do this first make sure you have a keyboard connected to your Raspberry Pi, and then complete the following steps: 1. Go into the RetroPie Menu 2. Click 'Configuration Editor' 3. Click 'Advanced Configuration' 4. Click 'Manually edit RetroArch configurations' 5. In this screen there should be a .cfg file for each controller you have mapped to RetroPie. Click on the .cfg file of the controller you want to view 6. This .cfg file is a plain text file that you can then scroll through with your keyboard. In this .cfg file is a list of the controller's buttons and the numbers they're mapped to. It also shows all the Hotkey actions and the numbers they're mapped to. By looking at the hotkey actions' numbers, and comparing them with the controller buttons' numbers, you can figure out which controller buttons are mapped to which hotkey actions (eg. if the Save State hotkey action is mapped to the number 11, and the controller's Down button is mapped to the number 11, then you know that the Save State action is mapped to the controller's Down button) 7. You can also edit this .cfg file to change the numbers that the Hotkey actions are mapped to (don't change the numbers of the controller buttons though since that will cause the controller to stop working). So if you want to map the Right Shoulder button to the Save State hotkey action, you would first scroll down through the list until you find the Right Shoulder button (input_r_btn), and you'd take note of its number (eg. 4). Then you'd scroll through the list until you find the Save State hotkey action (input_save_state_btn), and you'd change its number to the same number as the Right Shoulder button (4). You can then use this method to map other hotkey actions to other controller buttons 8. To exit this .cfg file, press the Tab key on the keyboard to highlight the 'OK' button, and then click it. You'll be back at the previous screen with all the controller .cfg files 9. If you've changed the hotkey actions with that controller, then they'll only work with that controller. So you'll have to do the same with each of the controller .cfg files in this screen. (Even if you have just one controller though, it is recognised as a separate controller when it's wireless as opposed to wired, so it will have two separate .cfg files that you'll have to edit) Let me know if you need any help with it.
@@SEB1991SEB Thanks for the detailed write up, I truly appreciate it. Sorry I got you to do that though, as I actually did figure it out with a friend's help. Hopefully this can still help others who see it.

i need help with saves. i've only been using save slot zero. i uss an usb snes controller. i accidentally saved over save slot zero. :( but i really need that save. is there a way to go back to my previous save? like delete my newst save and go back to the last time i saved it?
Is it possible to transfer (in game) saves from retro pi to android? I have a PSX game I've been playing on the Retro Pi and want to add the file to play via ePSXe on my android tablet. I have gone into the PSX folder located the .sav file on the Pi and copied this across to the PC then into the PSX folder on my tablet with the ROM. When I launch ePSXe it launches the game but has no save present?
If I save a game at a certain point then as I get further into the game I save again and further again I save will the amount of saves I make be numbered so i can only save a certain amount of times? And what if I do save over a save I already made what will it do? Lastly will this mess up the game to where I can only play it from the saves and not from the beginning?
No i have not mapped the keyboard, but i have tryed to mapped another controller (ps3 bt) it works fine by its self but not possible to save/load as a "number 2" controller. Im guessing it would work the same way with the keyboard if i map it as a controller. I am playing Zelda Ocarina of time, this game has pictures of the buttons on the screen so i it will be confusing to use another controller with this game. When i press F9 the game freezes, when i press P the picture disappears but it will return when pressed P again. ESC is another way for exit the game (select+start)
My RetroPie does not work properly, most of the games runs on HISH SPEED, it's messing somehow and I can't fix it, so I need to format and reinstall image again but how to get my saves from there? OR i can't and i will lose all my N64 saves?
Any idea why this method doesn't work for me? I read someone mentioning to edit the .cfg to change the save state keys to actual button presses, which I tried doing but I am still unable to save. I can select through the save slot numbers, but actually saving (I am using a PS4 controller) doesn't work for whatever reason.
How do I get the codes to use them? Please know when I was in school the apple2e was state of the art. If you can teach me you are worlds greatest teacher lol
This is a really misleading video because you don't explain that the reason these button combinations use the Select button is because you've already set the Select button as the Hotkey. But if everyone else set a different button as the Hotkey then using Select won't work for them. On a PS3 controller people would normally set the PS button as the Hotkey, so using Select wouldn't work for them, they should use the PS button instead.
Ahh, so it is the hotkey, not the select... Well, the guy posting the video might not even realize that he'd set up his controller like that. Thanks for this, saving this stuff seemed impossible until I saw this video, read a few comments.
@@Turtlehands Yeah I guess that could be true, I didn't mean anything towards ETA PRIME, he does have probably the best channel on TH-cam when it comes to RetroPie. I'd just hate for anyone to become confused from this though. No problem, glad my comment helped :)

I’ve been trying to save with the in game save, it doesn’t work after it is turned off. Does this method of saving stay after its been powered down? (I doubt it but I thought I’d ask.
It does work after being turned off. I saved the game yesterday and unplugged the pi completely. I just checked it now, and it was able to load the save file without trouble. The in-game save doesn't actually seem to be saved to the pi, but this method does save it to the sd card under roms, as was mentioned around 4:08 in the video.

I'm using a $5 controller with 12 button choices.... to have at least 1 save slot, you need left shoulder, right shoulder, and hotkey..... those allow me to save and load a game(1 slot, but hey, it's GREAT to be able to save) They give you like 50 choices to configure, and with only 12 possible on my controller....I have a lot of empty buttons.
@@SEB1991SEB I can't get mine to work either. Someone else set the controls, my main hotkey is the PS button, but no button combo seems to save. ??
@@LastBastian Are you sure your PS button is the hotkey button? Does it work for quitting a game? If so, then I don't know what the problem could be honestly. It would depend on how your friend set the hotkey controls.
There is a way to check which hotkey buttons are used for each controller that's mapped to RetroPie, and to change each controller's hotkey button combinations. It's a bit of a long-winded process but it's the only thing I can think to recommend. It's not too complicated really though once you know what to do. To do this first make sure you have a keyboard connected to your Raspberry Pi, and then complete the following steps:
1. Go into the RetroPie Menu
2. Click 'Configuration Editor'
3. Click 'Advanced Configuration'
4. Click 'Manually edit RetroArch configurations'
5. In this screen there should be a .cfg file for each controller you have mapped to RetroPie. Click on the .cfg file of the controller you want to view
6. This .cfg file is a plain text file that you can then scroll through with your keyboard. In this .cfg file is a list of the controller's buttons and the numbers they're mapped to. It also shows all the Hotkey actions and the numbers they're mapped to. By looking at the hotkey actions' numbers, and comparing them with the controller buttons' numbers, you can figure out which controller buttons are mapped to which hotkey actions (eg. if the Save State hotkey action is mapped to the number 11, and the controller's Down button is mapped to the number 11, then you know that the Save State action is mapped to the controller's Down button)
7. You can then use this method to map other hotkey actions to other controller buttons
8. To exit this .cfg file, press the Tab key on the keyboard to highlight the 'OK' button, and then click it. You'll be back at the previous screen with all the controller .cfg files
9. If you've changed the hotkey actions with that controller, then they'll only work with that controller. So you'll have to do the same with each of the controller .cfg files in this screen. (Even if you have just one controller though, it is recognised as a separate controller when it's wireless as opposed to wired, so it will have two separate .cfg files that you'll have to edit)
Let me know if you need any help with it.
@@SEB1991SEB Thanks for the detailed write up, I truly appreciate it.
Sorry I got you to do that though, as I actually did figure it out with a friend's help.
Hopefully this can still help others who see it.
@@LastBastian No problem. Yeah I don't mind anyway as I was thinking it could help others who see it as well anyway. Glad you got it sorted. Take care :)
In the retropie, playing the “tony hawk pro 2” for example! Can i save and load the game in memory card? Or i only can use this method?
i need help with saves. i've only been using save slot zero. i uss an usb snes controller. i accidentally saved over save slot zero. :( but i really need that save. is there a way to go back to my previous save? like delete my newst save and go back to the last time i saved it?
Are saves game specific? can you use the same number on multiple games?
I can save and reload but I can’t change saves? How does the remote has to be set up? And is there a way to make the bottom letter to show bigger?
Is it possible to transfer (in game) saves from retro pi to android? I have a PSX game I've been playing on the Retro Pi and want to add the file to play via ePSXe on my android tablet. I have gone into the PSX folder located the .sav file on the Pi and copied this across to the PC then into the PSX folder on my tablet with the ROM. When I launch ePSXe it launches the game but has no save present?
what version of retropie were you using on this video
If I save a game at a certain point then as I get further into the game I save again and further again I save will the amount of saves I make be numbered so i can only save a certain amount of times? And what if I do save over a save I already made what will it do? Lastly will this mess up the game to where I can only play it from the saves and not from the beginning?
Is there a way to save when you play? For example, in crash bandicoot, if I use the game save option, when I restart the game, the saves disappear. :/
What about with a ps4 controller it has no select button and it's a share button instead which does not work
Can't use save states on N64 with Xbox controller :P
How do you save/load state with a N64 controller without "select" button? i have a keybord connected, any combos here?
did you map a select button the keyboard? what controller are you using?
No i have not mapped the keyboard, but i have tryed to mapped another controller (ps3 bt) it works fine by its self but not possible to save/load as a "number 2" controller. Im guessing it would work the same way with the keyboard if i map it as a controller. I am playing Zelda Ocarina of time, this game has pictures of the buttons on the screen so i it will be confusing to use another controller with this game. When i press F9 the game freezes, when i press P the picture disappears but it will return when pressed P again. ESC is another way for exit the game (select+start)
are you going to be making any more chromebox video? lakka install? and maybe controller settings in lakka??
I can do that , I'll sent a link as soon as it's up, tonight or mid day tomorrow
+ETA PRIME ok sweet thank you
Mr prime can you make a video of how boot rasbian or retropie from hard drive
Could you make a video on how to connect a bluetooth headset or speaker to LibreELEC? It only works for 20 minutes and then it disconnects for me
My RetroPie does not work properly, most of the games runs on HISH SPEED, it's messing somehow and I can't fix it, so I need to format and reinstall image again but how to get my saves from there?
Exactly. Thank you.
This doesn't work for me at all.
Bro you saved me. Every tutorial says "Select" and "R" but its actually "Hotkey" and "R" smh.
thanks this helped me.
I have a raspberry pi gameboy zero and this doesnt work on it...it wont save with right and select, any help?
I wish we could save the files into another memory card like how the original games do
thank you very much ;)
Quick question.... what shader are you using for snes emulator?
How would I delete save states? I have a game that has some rosters and teams changed, is it possible to find a way to bring it back to it's default state?
Cody Rolf if you still haven't figure it out the best way to do it is to take your SD card and load it back into your computer and look for the Save States that should help you
can you load a save from emulation station so like on the C64 Vice it bypases the loading part of the game..?
How do u save with an Nes or Genesis controller?
For me it worked with the Nes controller, when you press select together with D-PAD LEFT you will be abble to see the slots then you hold R to save the state or L to load the state
Hercules junior, Does this method of saving work on a raspiboy?
This work with games like Pokemon that have a save built in?
How are you using the PS4 Controller with Bluetooth?
Mine doesnt work... only with Cable. And internet doesnt give me any solutions ;/
Is there a way to save psx or snes to a USB drive?
i found that this didn't work for me. however, when i pushed the ps button on my controller, the retroarch menu popped up giving a way to pause games and save or load my game states.
that's wicked, gonna try that later need a visible page for my saved stuff without a keyboard
Hi bro maybe you might give me a help
I got a kinhank retro game and when I used to play on it I can save the game normally..... Bit NOW I don't know why it doesn't let me save the game. And as well when I try to save " and for nothing " I close to application to choose another game , and the system freezes.
Can you tell me what might be the problem please? Much appreciate thank you
thanks it helped alot!!
What if I use a SNES controller?
I am the same way, I was wondering if it has to be the bottom triggers rather than bumpers.
Dan 123 He did mention early on in the vid that he mapped the shoulder buttons to the triggers. So you can just use the shoulder buttons on your SNES controller...
@@RivellaLight I tried that. You can't map trigger buttons for the SNES when they don't exist. It will say, "already taken" if you try.
Anyone figure this out, yet?
Hello is it possible to save the state save local on pc?
Because i was playing and have some save state but i want to remake everything because i have changed so much that something dont work so i want to put retropie on it again and save the save state? I hope you understand what i wanted to say my english is not the best :0
The in-game save doesn't actually seem to be saved to the pi, but this method does save it to the sd card under roms, as was mentioned around 4:08 in the video.
thank you good sir
Hello there. I have a probleme with my save files on psx for Resident Evil 2. I did finish the game with Leon and i saved my game at the end. It gives me a Claire file to load for 2nd senario... But when i go to the cd2 witch is the Claire cd it doesn't show me the file i saved with Leon... Is this cauz every psx cd has it own memory card?
great vid - thanks!
It's weird this worked once now when I try it every game says "0%: saving state" and never finishes, anyone have any ideas?
@@user-te4kb2bb5h This is tough, the controller interface on pie flat out sucks. Pardon my French.
I'm using a $5 controller with 12 button choices.... to have at least 1 save slot, you need left shoulder, right shoulder, and hotkey..... those allow me to save and load a game(1 slot, but hey, it's GREAT to be able to save)
They give you like 50 choices to configure, and with only 12 possible on my controller....I have a lot of empty buttons. I had a lot to learn to get it working at all.
So I do the first 8 I think, then start, I skip select.... (though, I think one of the 7th or 8th buttons might be better to skip? X+Y on my controller....) and then use select as the hotkey, and left and right shoulder for to save, you need those....
The bottom line is get a controller with a million buttons on it.
CAN you save with a snes controleur or a ps4 controleur
ETA...How do you save dreamcast/reicast games in retropie 4.1? I can not get it to work. Also...how do you get rid of that date/time screen in reicast?
Also...when playing dreamcast games, I get a flashing cursor in the corner of the black border.. Why is this?
I can't get this to work with an SNES style controller. Perhaps since it is only R and L mapping rather then the R2 and L2 mapping
of your PS controller? However, I also heard this can be done with a keyboard using F2 and F4. No dice there either...same for Alt F2/F4. I have read several forum posts and so far this is not working for me. I am on latest version of retropie. Any ideas?
When you mapped the controller did you set the L and R to the shoulder buttons?
+ETA PRIME I only mapped L1 and R1, I left L2 and R2 unmapped. Should I map both buttons to each single shoulder button so pressing one presses both? I didn't know what effect that would have.
+PeteC75 I'm pretty sure you need to map L2 and R2 instead of L1-R1 , I will take a look when I get home
+ETA PRIME Yeah I think you are right. I just watched a video of someone mapping an SNES controller, and they only mapped the Bottom Shoulder buttons and skipped the Top Shoulder buttons. I did the opposite. I need to re-run that mapping tool and try it again. Thanks for the tip!
+ETA PRIME Is there a way to re-run the controller setup like when you map it the first time? Or am I stuck going into config files now?
How to configure raspberry to load the games automatically from last save point such as auto save and continue
doesn't seem to work on my ps4 controller for some reason.. I mostly play psx Roms
Will it still be there when u power it off
But ... How do you delete a save state?
You can overwrite
Where is memory card slot or how do I get to save a game on retro station v4
