Hello chuck, Video idea, I remember a while back you were doing crypto videos and making some cash with our network, Yesterday I was researching and came across *WIFI HIS BILLING SYSTEMS* , The topic falls on networking and Linux, and it might be a good topic to have some extra cash from our internet. Love your videos . Enjoying from KENYA 🇰🇪
I have a Raspberry Pi running RetroPie connected to my TV. I play old console games with my 13-year old daughter. I bought two USB official Sega Genesis controllers and we play Mortal Kombat II together. A 30+ year old game I played with I was young. Now she beats me almost every time and she says it's her favourite game. It's awesome.
Oh they sell USB sega genesis controller? I thought they only carried the big controllers like ps2/3/4/5 controllers w/usb. Interesting, I always liked the Genesis controllers, small controllers hurt my hands.
Imagine taking this little piece of hardware back in time and showing all those console gamers what they will be able to do in the future on ONE device
@JohanlastZa With every space age tech there's inspiration for reality. The Dick Tracy watch? That's basically real now too. But we still have to wait for light sabers!🤦♂🤣
If u just showed early 90s kids the feature to play with their friends on the telephone lines they'd be floored, let alone a 1000 game library in ur pocket.
I really liked this video. Thank you so much for not only teaching us how to create this makeshift retro gaming console but also for showing us how to preserve old classics. 🙏
I like that RetroAchievements shows indicators in the bottom right corner of Achievements that you can get in the level. For instance in Zelda LttP, when you are fighting Moldorm in the Tower of Hera, it shows 2 possible achievements, no damage and kill Moldorm in under 20 seconds. If you don't defeat Moldorm quickly or get hit, the indicators vanish, letting you know that you can't get them.
I love RetroPi. I set mine up so the ROMs folder is symbolicly linked to a folder on my NAS. This way it gets backed up. I have way more storage space there and if I need to add a ROM or set up a new Pi, it's easy. I just install my custom image and everything is there.
I've been working with Pi's since 2015. I have about 20 of them in almost every form and then some. I mainly use them for RetroPie. I have built images, downloaded images, and there really isn't anything new to them in terms of RetroPie. But, this video almost made them feel new to me after watching. I have never done the achievements and just might try that out. I also think it time that I generate a new image from scratch as those are the most fun. You guys really make it seem easy, and it actually is. There are a ton of areas to get into the weeds quickly though. But, you stayed away from that. Great video for a first timer who knows nothing about RetroPie and the Raspberry Pi!
dude i dont even mind watching your promo's, youre a master of your craft. " lets make the password coffee" " Put that in dashlane and watch it get roasted" BRO!!!
I built an Old Dell OptiPlex 3020 with Bactocera which is very similar to this and my 4-year-old loves to play the older games with me. It's became very fun configuring it to the way you want I think I have spent over 20 hours setting this up It's great to get it set to how you want, so then it makes it easier to copy the setup for another computer.
I want build one for myself and for my son. So once he's old enough he can play old games, so he can appreciate them. It also gives me a library of games offline to play and enjoy.
Another option would be to get a used PC and install recall box or Launchbox. Both are great, also nothing wrong with a pie. By then the pie 6 or 7 will be out playing Halo lol.
Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone! Hopefully I'll make it into some more videos soon. For this one, I definitely spent way too much time playing video games at work!!
After watching this months ago I made my own RetroPie just to test it. Now I switched to Batocera, which gets updated more often and has the same architecture! Give it a try!
been building these since 2016 and i got my first pie, Love when others figure this out and build their first. so much fun, now i am going to set up netplay and send a pi to my friend and were going to play some Mortal Kombat 2: update: i like retropie, but when i make these for others i use Botocera because its easier for Newbies

Make one with Batocera. It's preconfigured with emulators that go up to Xbox360/PS3/Wii U. Has way more options to work with to enhance the look and feel.
Yeah, a video in 2024 about Retropie is certainly a choice, that project hasn't seen any quality of life changes in like 5+ years? Meanwhile Batocera has regular updates and they probably could have cut this video in half due to not having to tweak and adjust things in retropie in multiple different places (not to mention actual Pi5 compatibility). Oh that option, you need to change that in emulationstation, that option is configured in retroarch, this other option is found one of the labyrinth of options that is retropie setup.
I did the same with my raspberry pi as I had one collecting dust but I also want to note that the rpi can boot from USB, which is where I installed retropie and placed my games
Very detailed tutorial, thanks a bunch! One problem I had following the tutorial was that I copied all the ROMS from my PC into the ROMS folder on the PI, without realizing that they need to go into subfolders corresponding to the type of game / console (nes - Nintendo Entertainment System, snes - Super Nintendo Entertainment System, n64 - Nintendo 64, gb - Game Boy / Game Boy Color, gba - Game Boy Advance, etc). In the tutorial, the ROMS folder they copied on the PI, already had the mentioned subfolders. Still awesome video, thank you!
Burning a image from retropie's website using etcher is easier than what you propose here. Also, use the keyboard to configure the Pi, and you do not have to deal with weird controls! A easyer method to transfer ROMs to the PI is format a USB drive and place an retropie folder in the root... stick it to a USB port on the Pi and it will create all the folders you need for all the emulators you have installed. Take the thumb drive and copy the roms to it using your computer. Stick it back on the Pi and let it copy the files from the USB stick to the SD Card. This way you do not have to deal with network transfers, SSH, hostname and password.
I got into RetroPie a while back, and ironically, the "official" RetroPie is the one I had the most trouble with and gave up on. Instead, I tried RecalBox, Batocera and Lakka. I got allthree to work, and I honestly don't know which of the first two I like better--RecalBox and Batocera are both amazing. While Lakka *does* work, I'm not a fan of its interface (it's basically just plain RetroArch with no front-end).
This Video got me hyped up so much that i dug out my old RPi Handhelds just to find out how badly RetroFlag screwed up the skripts for the GPI Case 2 and 2w. I was instantly cured.
Hello everyone. I have the following problem, when I go into the Retro pi settings or generally into the settings like Wlan, Bloutooth I always have a background that does not go away. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Still got my 3B+ :) Like a 5 tho… Tip: Got a remote for Kodi (Talks to NAS), but won’t fully work with Retropie Menu (which is annoying). So I remapped the select keys to 8 and 6. Means can access Kodi purely by remote.
Updated my Retropie/Kodi build the other day. An option was causing some .mkv to jitter. Been playing with ffmpeg and Subtitles of late too. It now inflates set up (4x). As just me all have same fixed IP. But, possible to run a command to change it.
My Raspberry Pi 400 is my favorite game console. But RetroPie died years ago; the retro pi "scene" is Batocera now. Feels like some pretty big, basic stuff was missed during the research phase of this project, and the non-existence of a rpi5 version should have been a big hint.

Just wanna add something for everyone out there following along, when you transfer the ROMs via scp, you have to throw the ROMs in the correct folder of the console. so if you have an N64 game you need to throw the ROM from your host into the /retropie/rom/n64 folder etc..

I'd recommend enabling usb based storage for the roms and make a flash image copy of the sd card after getting it working the way you want. I've had corruption destroy a couple sd cards. With the roms on secondary storage, I don't risk losing them and reflashing the card is quick and easy. Also I use WinSCP for Rom transfer.
I have used retropie for years but only on the raspberry pi 3B+, which topped out at PS1 and couldnt run any games made for later consoles. finally, the raspberry pi 5 is able to play gamecube/ps2!!! Time to finally replace my 3b+
Maybe you can answer me this: I am already running stuff on my Pi5, do you know if this still works with Retropi? I am currently just running the pihole but I want to add a mediaserver quite soon as well.
I Made about 126 of these when the RPi3 first came out. I ended up getting 220+ SNES USB Controllers from WISH for $1.00 Each, they took 2 months to get, but I still have a few that Work Great
Thanks for a great video. Is there any way of returning to the Pi OS when installing Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 5? Would be nice to still have home theater possibilities.
I did the older method for a while, but these new functions are looks fun! Also worth mention you should put your raspberry into a retro-console-looks case eg a superpi case from retroflag (oh, and don't forget to add some heatsink to your pie!) and also you could set up the shutdown button with a small python script. Rpi is still a fun platform to messing with :)
I set mine up this very way when i first received my pi 5 a few months ago. I also struggled with netplay. Loved the video. Very helpful stuff here. Who's up 4 a game of coleco "frontline"? lol. Also; this works awesome with lite 64 bit os for pi 5, if u want to save a bit of space.
You can even play some PC games. I flashed Windows 11 Pro arm64 and got Tanuki Justice running at full speed without over clocking. Android 14 is pretty cool too. I like having all 3 OS's. Windows, Linux and Android all in one machine. I use the 4B 8GB in the Vilros Keyboard TouchPad Hub. It's like a Stealthy Black C64.
There’s also fully loaded images available as I’m sure you’re well aware. That’s what I always use at this point. Batocera is the best front end IMO. It seems to almost be a competition amongst the community to see who can make the best one. Some of them are unbelievably good.
Been using RetroPie since the Pi 1 but didn't know you can play over a network! BTW RetroPie runs on a Pi Zero ($12,50!) up to PS1. You might want to choose some alternative emulators over RetroArch but it'll work.
Re: Managing ROMs I'd just recommend getting FileZilla setting up and connecting with SSH the same way you did in the terminal. Then just drag and drop. Way simpler than scp.
Big fan here chuck❤️! I am expecting an N+ course from you here on TH-cam. I love the way you teach, I am working as an IT help desk, I am so interested in Cyber Security, so I wanna enhance my knowledge in Networking before going for Cyber Security. Please do some magic and create an N+ course for the poor us.
Well, this is plain weird timing. 3 days ago I decided to repurpose my Pi4 from a small Dev server and put RetroPie. I've been scraping the ROM info all day. It's almost finished. So the same day you put up the video I decided to do the same thing. I came across the video today though. :D
Tou gotta use a PW manager, no matter the brand. Ive been with lastpass for over 10years, pre android, as i use to have to use a dolphin plugin to access my LP back then. But a manager is a must. But a physical book isnt a bad idea if your not leaving it in a public office. As a password book left next to your pc at home isnt the worst issue you have if someone has got to your actual pc.

6:54 is there a way to re-setup this as I done the joypad and some functions are not working? Thanks
good job Alex
Thank you! 😄
Great video. Bout to build a 4 player arcade pedestal and use a pi5 for the gaming.
I was wondering when you were going to do one for retro gaming on the raspberry pi, I love making these myself!!
I Made about 126 of these when the RPi3 first came out.
I ended up getting 220+ SNES USB Controllers from WISH for $1.00 Each, they took 2 months to get, but I still have a few that Work Great
thanks for the info. great video
Thanks for a great video. Is there any way of returning to the Pi OS when installing Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 5? Would be nice to still have home theater possibilities.
Thank you guys! Funny and to the point!
This is great
Great video. Can't wait till my pi 4 arrives
That looks really good to me.
Maybe i had to upgrade my one ❤
Great video!
Nintendo's legal counsel has entered the chat...
The fbi wont get me lmao
I did the older method for a while, but these new functions are looks fun! Also worth mention you should put your raspberry into a retro-console-looks case eg a superpi case from retroflag (oh, and don't forget to add some heatsink to your pie!) and also you could set up the shutdown button with a small python script. Rpi is still a fun platform to messing with :)
You could also use Recallbox, which is more up to date. Or Lakka, built right into RetroArch.
That's awesome!!! Thank you guys
Shout out for Alex. Great way to balance the amount of beard and coffee.
Will my Pi5 still run the Pi hole and other stuff or does it actually overwrite the OS?
Where can you get full loaded images from?
Great video. I want to try this but I'm scared to mess it up.
How did you get Nintendo games to show I’ve tried installing a lot of games and only psp games show no ds or will or ps2 games show?
Welcome back to the land of pi
Awesome guide!
Is it possible to have it built to support 2 controllers on the same Pie?
Nice video. Thank you chuck and alex❤
Well, this is plain weird timing. 3 days ago I decided to repurpose my Pi4 from a small Dev server and put RetroPie. I've been scraping the ROM info all day. It's almost finished. So the same day you put up the video I decided to do the same thing. I came across the video today though. :D
I keep getting surprised at what a raspberry pi can do
I wouldn't choose retropie, I think recallbox is way more beginner friendly, but great video nonetheless. 😊
Tou gotta use a PW manager, no matter the brand. Ive been with lastpass for over 10years, pre android, as i use to have to use a dolphin plugin to access my LP back then.
But a manager is a must. But a physical book isnt a bad idea if your not leaving it in a public office.
As a password book left next to your pc at home isnt the worst issue you have if someone has got to your actual pc.
at 1.50 in should I burst out laughing with genuine amusement? Watching Chuck for years and still dont know how to hack into the CIA plus the 5 raspberry pies I have are not mining Bitcoin as they were intended :)
Network Chuck you ROCK :)
Did I miss the part of how to get the pi connected to my crt? Please help.
