You just open SDformatter, then make sure you are formatting the correct SDcard, name it, then click format. It'll warn you click okay twice and then you can move on to the Win32 part!
it wont create a rom folder. And for some reason when I format the usb drive, stick it in the Pi and wait 10 mins then put it back into my PC, it always says I need to repair it? but my mac seems to work?
Etcher is probably a better alternative to the disk imager used in the video. It's a lot more intuitive, it's open source, and tbh i just like the style. :)
i could successfully add snes and psx roms but now i wanna add some more roms .i checked the usb drive and the previous roms are still on it ..do i need to delete those first and then add more or can i keep them on .? will the retropie not re copy the old roms if i keep them on? anyone? :/

Same thing is happening to me. I installed retropie 4 onto my SD card. When I boot, it get the RetroPie splashscreen, but where you boot into emulationstation, I get a console. I have expanded the SD file system. I'm installing this onto a Pi zero, so any way to not have to connect to the web would be a help

The tutorial is pretty detailed but yeah it would have been nice to know ahead of time this was a requirement. LifeHacker puts adding ROMS as (optional) giving the impression that you can play some games out of the gate. But that doesn't seem to be the case unless I'm overlooking something. ROMs should be part of the checklist of things needed. I mean it's a bit pointless going through the whole setup exercise without them.
An emulator is basically a digital console. You're literally emulating the hardware. Saying they should tell you that downloading roms is necessary is like saying Microsoft should have to tell you buying games is necessary to play stuff on an Xbox.
Hello i have a question is it possible to make the main menu hidden or get rid of it and just go to the games only? Install complete. Transferred some NES, SNES, N64, and PSX roms. Also transferred PSX Bios. On boot however it only gives options for NES and SNES. No N64 or PSX emulator available even though I transferred some ROMs over for those systems. What did I do wrong?

I've download Visual boy advanced and I can't seem to find anything that looks the VBA BIOS, just the .exe. is that all I need to get GBA games to work?
I just built my first Pi today (3b+) and have it up and running smoothly with the newest Rasberian OS. Since i am new to the RaspberryPi world, here are my questions: Why not just use my 3b+ as a computer, hop on the internet (i am on TH-cam right now writing this on my 3b+ connected to my tv) and just download RetroPi and any other programs needed directly to the SD card mounted in my 3b+ ? Why remove the sd card, plug it into your main pc and do it all through Windows and your main pc? Also, why use that Win32 Disk Imager program instead of just extracting the files and moving them to the sd card yourself? Can you even run RetroPi from the Raspberian OS? maybe that's what i am missing here. I just figured that RetroPi could be installed, opened and ran like a normal program from your Raspberian OS..
HI! Facing a small issue here with USB stick transfer. Basically, despite formatting to FAT32, and removing the device safely, and finally waiting a reasonable amount of time after the USB's light stops blinking: the USB seems to continue to be corrupted. I've tried across three sticks in the same process. Any ideas?
You showed that you used the Playstation ROM and Bios. I set up a Retropie with the Tekken3 ROM and Playstation BIOS. I'm using after market PS3 USB controllers. When I'm in Emulation Station I can assign the buttons but when playing Tekken 3 the only buttons work are A, B, X & Y. No other part of the controller works. When I go into Retroarch all the buttons light up but when I go into the Tekken 3's configure keys menu, I can't assign any of the buttons. What should I be looking for?

Ok I followed your video...used a 128gb micro SD card.im guessing after I loaded retropie onto the raspberry pi with the card reader I put the card into the SD slot. I updated to latest retropie and it crashed. when i try to start my pi, i get this "retropie unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179 2)" I need to save this SD card. I have searched everywhere and only options are if you have noobs installed which i do not. other option was to edit cmdline.txt replace root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to root=/dev/mmcblk0p6, but it says i do not have permissions to edit this file. Hello. I have been using a 4GB SD card just running a few NES, SNES, N64 and arcade games. Problem is that the arcade games reboot after 5 to 30 seconds of play. Other games are fine. I am using a cheap N64 clone controller, and I thought that this was somehow causing the reset, but I played a 32GB image I found online and I did not have this problem with the same controller. I was worried that I might have messed up a setting someplace, and now considering reinstalling retropie.

my usb isn't being populated {retropie folder stays blank. i left it ten minutes its a rasberry pi zero so i have to unplug the controller and have to pull the power lead to restart so the controller works again. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can the ROM Files be inside their own separate folders (not compressed) and still work, or do I have to take each ROM out of every folder? All of my ROMs came in .zip files. I mass extracted them all, but they came out in their own individual folders. Do I have to go through each and every one or can I just drop the extracted folders with the ROMs inside to correct folder in the Retropie system?
Hey I'm having a problem with N64 roms. It wont sense any controller input. It worked at first, but since i tried plugging in a second controller, it senses nothing. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the emulator, trying different emulators, resetting the controller input through ES and RetroArch, nothing works. Any ideas? I'm thinking I'll just need to start from scratch

Your channel is awesome ....I need your help, I have setup my first raspberry pi 4b successfully, however for some reason in daphne for the laser disc game Cliff Hanger none of the video snippets, marque and box art don't appear in the game list after I save (in the game info area) I've even tried skyscraper, scraper and via emulation station and nothing scrapes for this game. I put the correct path in for the gamedata manually and I'm at a loss, can you do a video showing how this process can be done successfully??? So crazy question. When I formatted my micro sc card to install in the Pi, it of course only had the "boot" available, along with its size, which was like a gig or whatever. Does retropie automatically use the unused partition for the ROMs? I am wondering if there's step missing, before installing my ROMs, I don't want it to just "fill" up on the boot partition. I obviously want it on the partition that was not used for the boot.
New to working with Raspberry Pi's. A buddy gave me a Pi 1 he never used. Tried following the instructions but when I downloaded the Retropie 1 there is no image file when I extracted it, just a bunch of folders. Is there somewhere else I can get the image file from?
Removed my Retropie 3.2 and reinstalled the new Retropie 4.0 for the new features. Installed all the new ROMS and now the image quality for the games is worse. More pixelated than before... Anyone know reasons why? Love the tutorial by the way

I formated my sdcard but the win32 or etcher wont work. I tried etcher it took 4 hours and didnt finnish. The win32 looks like qorking but the card is empty. I placed it to pie but its only black screen. Could you please help me?
Im just starting out and cant figure out which files im actually suposed to save for the roms. I downloaded a game and ran it and it give me a zip file, i right click to extract the files and I get 14 files with one being a read me, some say 1fc,1f8,538 etc. please help thanks

so I finally got retropie downloaded on the sd card, but I have a 32gb sd card and once I downloaded the retropie file onto the card, it only shows my sd card is 50mb. I downloaded sd card formatter, but does it matter, that it says 50mb? can I get it back to 32gb with out erasing the retropie file?

I've placed the BIOS files in the retro USB folder but it does not mount the PSX menu. Upon boot I get the message [failed] to start mount at usb sda device. I've reformatted different sized cards, reszed them and reinstalled all emu pkgs on the pi.

so you don't need to use sd formater to erase and format your card the first time before burning the image files with win 32 disc imager or etcher ?

At what point do we reformat the SD card, you mention reformatting the SD Card, but you never actually reformatted it.

Install complete. Transferred some NES, SNES, N64, and PSX roms. Also transferred PSX Bios. On boot however it only gives options for NES and SNES. No N64 or PSX emulator available even though I transferred some ROMs over for those systems. What did I do wrong?
Thanks for the this tutorial... PSX games, how do you know which are BIOS files? I DL some games and extracted them, but don't see it... Also, TIP : you must use lowercase for the folder "retropie" name... I just spent 3 frustrating hours trying to figure out why I wasn't getting all the folders, you can NOT use capital letters.
Hey ETA Prime, just set up a game HAT with retropie 4.4 and im really enjoying it. Your instruction videos were some of the best. I'm having one issue that hopefully you can help me with. I'm trying to get Gameboy advanced games to work on my game hat and I know in one of your videos you said that I would need the GBA BIOS. I've download Visual boy advanced and I can't seem to find anything that looks the VBA BIOS, just the .exe. is that all I need to get GBA games to work?
I just built my first Pi today (3b+) and have it up and running smoothly with the newest Rasberian OS. Since i am new to the RaspberryPi world, here are my questions: Why not just use my 3b+ as a computer, hop on the internet (i am on TH-cam right now writing this on my 3b+ connected to my tv) and just download RetroPi and any other programs needed directly to the SD card mounted in my 3b+ ? Why remove the sd card, plug it into your main pc and do it all through Windows and your main pc? Also, why use that Win32 Disk Imager program instead of just extracting the files and moving them to the sd card yourself? Can you even run RetroPi from the Raspberian OS? maybe that's what i am missing here. I just figured that RetroPi could be installed, opened and ran like a normal program from your Raspberian OS..

HI! Facing a small issue here with USB stick transfer. Basically, despite formatting to FAT32, and removing the device safely, and finally waiting a reasonable amount of time after the USB's light stops blinking: the USB seems to continue to be corrupted. I've tried across three sticks in the same process. Any ideas?
You showed that you used the Playstation ROM and Bios. I set up a Retropie with the Tekken3 ROM and Playstation BIOS. I'm using after market PS3 USB controllers. When I'm in Emulation Station I can assign the buttons but when playing Tekken 3 the only buttons work are A, B, X & Y. No other part of the controller works. When I go into Retroarch all the buttons light up but when I go into the Tekken 3's configure keys menu, I can't assign any of the buttons. What should I be looking for?

Hi, I have two questions, First, I have installed NOOBs before installing RetroPie. However, I now can only enter Retropie but not a selection screen for different OS systems like before. Can I put the Retropie in the selection option? Second, I can not have the sound out from the TV. I connect it through HDMI, and I have followed several instructions by adding hdmi_drive=2 and many ways, none of them works. Do you know how to solve this problem? Thank you!
Ok I followed your video...used a 128gb micro SD card.im guessing after I loaded retropie onto the raspberry pi with the card reader I put the card into the SD slot. Here is the pickle I'm loading games and it's kicking back roms saying it needs extra space? I've loaded a lot but no where near 128gb what am I missing? Raspberry pi3b+

Is there a simple way of transferring a save from one device to another? Preferably something similar to this, where I wouldn't have to use any SSH/Samba (or whatever it's called). I know nothing about Linux but I have 40h Breath of Fire save I'd like to get back to. Thanks in advance!

I need to save this SD card. I have searched everywhere and only options are if you have noobs installed which i do not. other option was to edit cmdline.txt replace root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to root=/dev/mmcblk0p6, but it says i do not have permissions to edit this file. Help please!
Hello. I have been using a 4GB SD card just running a few NES, SNES, N64 and arcade games. Problem is that the arcade games reboot after 5 to 30 seconds of play. Other games are fine. I am using a cheap N64 clone controller, and I thought that this was somehow causing the reset, but I played a 32GB image I found online and I did not have this problem with the same controller. I was worried that I might have messed up a setting someplace, and now considering reinstalling retropie.

Hi, nice tutorial. i have questions, your usb copied the file BIOS, configs and roms from raspberry pi correct? and you use retropie 4.3.. i look into the folders you have(under roms folder), you have psp folder and i don't have mine, can i just add the folder from my computer and then just plug to raspberry pi?

my usb isn't being populated {retropie folder stays blank. i left it ten minutes its a rasberry pi zero so i have to unplug the controller and have to pull the power lead to restart so the controller works again. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can the ROM Files be inside their own separate folders (not compressed) and still work, or do I have to take each ROM out of every folder? All of my ROMs came in .zip files. I mass extracted them all, but they came out in their own individual folders. Do I have to go through each and every one or can I just drop the extracted folders with the ROMs inside to correct folder in the Retropie system?
Hey I'm having a problem with N64 roms. It wont sense any controller input. It worked at first, but since i tried plugging in a second controller, it senses nothing. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the emulator, trying different emulators, resetting the controller input through ES and RetroArch, nothing works. Any ideas? I'm thinking I'll just need to start from scratch

Your channel is awesome ....I need your help, I have setup my first raspberry pi 4b successfully, however for some reason in daphne for the laser disc game Cliff Hanger none of the video snippets, marque and box art don't appear in the game list after I save (in the game info area) I've even tried skyscraper, scraper and via emulation station and nothing scrapes for this game. I put the correct path in for the gamedata manually and I'm at a loss, can you do a video showing how this process can be done successfully??? With your attention to detail in your videos I think we can get this fixed because you're the💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣

So crazy question. When I formatted my micro sc card to install in the Pi, it of course only had the "boot" available, along with its size, which was like a gig or whatever. Does retropie automatically use the unused partition for the ROMs? I am wondering if there's step missing, before installing my ROMs, I don't want it to just "fill" up on the boot partition. I obviously want it on the partition that was not used for the boot.
New to working with Raspberry Pi's. A buddy gave me a Pi 1 he never used. Tried following the instructions but when I downloaded the Retropie 1 there is no image file when I extracted it, just a bunch of folders. Is there somewhere else I can get the image file from?
Removed my Retropie 3.2 and reinstalled the new Retropie 4.0 for the new features. Installed all the new ROMS and now the image quality for the games is worse. More pixelated than before... Anyone know reasons why? Love the tutorial by the way

I formated my sdcard but the win32 or etcher wont work. I tried etcher it took 4 hours and didnt finnish. The win32 looks like qorking but the card is empty. I placed it to pie but its only black screen. Could you please help me?
Im just starting out and cant figure out which files im actually suposed to save for the roms. I downloaded a game and ran it and it give me a zip file, i right click to extract the files and I get 14 files with one being a read me, some say 1fc,1f8,538 etc. please help thanks

so I finally got retropie downloaded on the sd card, but I have a 32gb sd card and once I downloaded the retropie file onto the card, it only shows my sd card is 50mb. I downloaded sd card formatter, but does it matter, that it says 50mb? can I get it back to 32gb with out erasing the retropie file?

hi eta, did u try this on pi 3b+? i tryed it yesterday on my 3b+ and it dosnt work. but it works on on the older system 3b. do you know what can/should i do? they sold me this package(nespi + pi3b+) on amazon espacially for retropie.
what if my roms is compressed zipped and I transfer it over to the raspberry pi will the pi still be able to see it or play it? or do I have to unzipped each game ROM and then transfer it over?BTW you make great tutorial and reviews great work.....

I've placed the BIOS files in the retro USB folder but it does not mount the PSX menu. Upon boot I get the message [failed] to start mount at usb sda device. I've reformatted different sized cards, reszed them and reinstalled all emu pkgs on the pi.
