There's also ANOTHER thing that makes getting the emeralds even MORE bullshit, if you can believe it. You know how checkpoints only spawn the special stage portal when you trigger them? Well, when you trigger a checkpoint, the game sets the flag to trigger all the checkpoints that it considers to be earlier in the stage. Works great as a checkpoint system, but it's absolute DOGSHIT for the special stage system.

4:01 I learned to do these special stages using the mobile port and was so happy when I didn’t need save states or multiple attempts on the original rom
Metropolis really isn’t that bad. I don’t know why everyone hates it on it constantly. It’s slightly more difficult than the rest of the game, and the rest of the game is piss easy
And that's why you play the 2013 version of the game kids, the Emerald Hill achievement with the emeralds is incredibly easy there. (and I'm very impressed to see someone do it in the 92 version)
I don’t know if anyone already said this or not yet, but the reason pressing the D-Pad on a Diagonal Spring slows you down is actually the AIR SPEED CAP KICKING IN. Yeah, for whatever reason, Sonic 2 got rid of Sonic 1's ground speed cap, but NOT the air speed cap, making a lot of air movement in Sonic 2 feel stiff because pressing the D-Pad AT ALL in the air cuts your speed heavily, and it's so bad. Thankfully, Sonic 3 removed this unremoved cap.

I agree with most of your criticisms, but blaming the game for not taking into consideration that you can get all 7 emeralds in the first level makes no sense. Obviously it wasn't intended, so checkpoints behind the current one activating isn't an issue for 99% of people. At the end of the day it's a self-imposed challenge by fans, not developers. Blame RetroAchievements
Hey, congrats on mastering Sonic 2. I too mastered this game about a couple months ago, and yeah, some of the achievements such as deathless, and the special stages definitely required a lot of muscle memory. I couldn't tell you how annoyed I was about the few times that I was at the final boss to only die because the bounce back upon hitting the final boss wouldn't work at times. And tails... I had to play them both separately because Tails was such a liability when it came to bosses and special stages. Lastly, I'm glad I wasn't the only one that went Super Sonic on a deathless run only to end up clipping through the lava and dying lol. Again, congrats on mastering Sonic 2. If or when you do go for Sonic CD I must give you fair warning, be prepared to spend multiple hours for a lot of single achievements. I have war flashbacks for how insane some of the achievements are.
the diagonal springs slow you down because moving yourself (with the d-pad) brings the air horizontal speed cap (which things that move you, rather than you moving yourself, often override) into effect. sonic 1 had this on the ground too which is why after e.g. bouncing off a horizontal spring holding a direction would slow you down in that game
Feels more like the creators of this achievement list are at fault for the difficult time you had, rather than the developers of Sonic 2. Since, the developers probably didn't intend for the mechanics to combine and turn the game into a torture device with the achievements active. I'M NOT SAYING THE ACHIEVEMENTS THEMSELVES ARE BAD, I'M SAYING THAT THEY FEEL LIKE THEY WERE CREATED WITHOUT FULLY UNDERSTANDING THE GAME AND IT'S MECHANICS.
Actually I think the checkpoints in this game was made completely with the idea of special stages in mind. If would make sense for the completely nonsensical placement of them if they placed them as a means for difficult special stage access rather than progression saving.
I should mention that Sonic 1 just got a revision, meaning you have no longer earned all of its cheevs... And... neither have I now. Maybe I should rectify that... Oh, it also has a Subset now, but considering that's entirely Ring Wrangler tasks...

Sonic 2 is a great video game that's well designed and better than its prequel in every way possible. It is also not made to have insanely hard achievements.
On 11:08~12:04: Here is the explanation regarding Level Select protection that Sonic 2 MD Set had (at the time of your video) on RetroAchievements: Usually, when you activate Level Select, the game sets a TRUE flag (0x01) inside the Console RAM on its dedicated address (0x00ffe1) which is permanent only to be resetted to 0x00 by a Hardware Reset (Reloading the Rom also works). Of course, there might be a way to check if the Player accessed that Level Select screen or not. However, its expected to be more complicated than just using that dedicated address I mentioned to do the job since you will be checking for Screen IDs instead of checking for LS activation itself.
I remember when I mastered Sonic 2 back in 2022. I felt good when I got the no spindash, Tails playthrough, and no death achievement all at once. I had a fun time with most of the achievements, not so much with the no ring achievments, although I did a debug on Aquatic Ruin Zone and got it anyway, even though I wasn't supposed to. Ahaha. I mastered Sonic 1 in a single night, but it took me a few days or perhaps a week(?) to master Sonic 2.
The next video: i got every achievement in sanic2 in the video:DID YOU KNOW THAT SANIC2 IS A WELL DESIGNED GAME BETTER THAN ITS PREQUEL SANIC1 IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE?
These "No Ring" achievements would make Ceave Gaming proud, as I remember them doing a lot of videos where they mention "shiny yet deadly coins" in Mario games. So, if I ever take on this challenge (which isn't happening any time soon), and attempt the No Ring achievements, I'm gonna take to calling the rings "shiny yet deadly rings".
For me personally, the special stage system in this game is one of my favorite things. You can just get 50 rings in Emerald Hill act 1, touch a checkpoint, get an emerald, get 50 rings again due to the rings respawning, get a different checkpoint, get the second emerald, and ultimately have super sonic in like Emerald Hill act 2 or Chemical Plant act 1 ( can't remember what it all works out to due to the number of checkpoints in each level), thus letting you use super sonic for the whole game Edit: In a normal playthrough, I find this very convenient, but getting to the part of the video where there's an achievement for specifically doing it all in Emerald Hill, I can see how that would then become really annoying, since it goes from "you can get in emerald hill if you feel like it" to "you *have* to get them all in emerald hill" which then open you up to the frustration of accidentally messing up and having to restart. So yeah i think I would find that achievement annoying too.
Sonic Origins makes getting all the Emeralds so much easier in Sonic 2. I don't think I could ever get all the Emeralds in Emerald Hill Zone without being able to retry the Special Stages. Especially that last one. Whoever programmed those Special Stages can eat my entire ass.
Special stages were super tricky for me to get, I realized having Tails with me made it impossible, so I just booted up level select and grinded them out until I memorized them (damn 7th one).
Worth noting: Sonic 2 was not designed with an achievement system in mind. By all accounts, all you need to do is collect the chaos emeralds, and beat the game.
5:38 Never seen that before! You got ejected out of a wall in the opposite direction. Then got spat out of a loop without going around the loop. 5:47 There's a multitude of ways for Super Sonic to get killed in that Zone. And I've seen that glitch before, so that one is quite common. 8:59 That's the Aerial Speed Cap for you. They gave unlimited speed cap on the ground, but forgot to do so for the air. They fixed that quirk in Sonic 3. 15:12 Dead. That's where you are right now. Can't say I've seen that before xD 22:04 What!? That is so stupid! I didn't even know about that xD 27:28 Screw that friggin' glitched ass hitbox badnik. "Thanks asshole!". I concur
2:25 it so you can have more opportunities to get the chaos emeralds during the stage because of that there are enough checkpoints to get all the chaos emeralds in emerald hill zone is because there are a lot of checkpoints in different paths of the level and in hiding locations
30:41 This is a Common problem in classic Sonic games, Ii f theres a little interruption on the ground (like small gaps, intersections, platform change) You have to press down again to roll again

28:42 That "WAAAAAAAA" was personal 😂
On 11:08~12:04: Here is the explanation regarding Level Select protection that Sonic 2 MD Set had (at the time of your video) on RetroAchievements:
Usually, when you activate Level Select, the game sets a TRUE flag (0x01) inside the Console RAM on its dedicated address (0x00ffe1) which is permanent only to be resetted to 0x00 by a Hardware Reset (Reloading the Rom also works). Of course, there might be a way to check if the Player accessed that Level Select screen or not. However, its expected to be more complicated than just using that dedicated address I mentioned to do the job since you will be checking for Screen IDs instead of checking for LS activation itself.
Bro did you even know that you can just restart the act and you can get all 50 rings so you can go back to the special stage
I've never seen ppl making this type of vids using RA achievements before. But I'm so happy that it's actually a thing
retroarchievermnts
edit: for those who don't understand, i put the retroarch in retroachievements.
I found it funny how this guy was pissed about the chaos emerald hill achievement, it's called an achievement for a reason
im just glad they didn’t make a achievement to get every ring in metropolis
32:52 “You have to put this CD- up your a-“
Is what I think he was trying to say before his pc broke
Congrats Supersonic! You earned it 🫶
The next video: i got every achievement in sanic2 in the video:DID YOU KNOW THAT SANIC2 IS A WELL DESIGNED GAME BETTER THAN ITS PREQUEL SANIC1 IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE?
5:58 ur glad you missed the crash barrier. You would've needed to restart or go to your last save
Save?
He is using the retroarch emulator, he also said in his sonic 1 vid that he had to save a lot through certain parts, so yeah
Honestly for the 7 emeralds in emerald hill, u could’ve just restarted the stage every time you finish a stage or 2. Saves time and sanity.
you cant do that in the OG game, thats exploit only works on the mobile ports
@@KPeraOfficial ohh I didn’t know that, mb.
Weirdly enough reseting the game fully by pressing the reset button on original hardware saves your chaos emerald count if you play as sonic only
These "No Ring" achievements would make Ceave Gaming proud, as I remember them doing a lot of videos where they mention "shiny yet deadly coins" in Mario games. So, if I ever take on this challenge (which isn't happening any time soon), and attempt the No Ring achievements, I'm gonna take to calling the rings "shiny yet deadly rings".
Bro, Ceave Gaming gang!
For me personally, the special stage system in this game is one of my favorite things. You can just get 50 rings in Emerald Hill act 1, touch a checkpoint, get an emerald, get 50 rings again due to the rings respawning, get a different checkpoint, get the second emerald, and ultimately have super sonic in like Emerald Hill act 2 or Chemical Plant act 1 ( can't remember what it all works out to due to the number of checkpoints in each level), thus letting you use super sonic for the whole game
Edit: In a normal playthrough, I find this very convenient, but getting to the part of the video where there's an achievement for specifically doing it all in Emerald Hill, I can see how that would then become really annoying, since it goes from "you can get in emerald hill if you feel like it" to "you *have* to get them all in emerald hill" which then open you up to the frustration of accidentally messing up and having to restart.
Damn dude
That must’ve took a lot of dedication
Special stages were super tricky for me to get, I realized having Tails with me made it impossible, so I just booted up level select and grinded them out until I memorized them (damn 7th one).
We need CD ,3, and 3d blast
Something about Sonic 2 that’s interesting is that Sonic 2 is a great game that is well designed and better than it’s prequels in every way possible
5:51 at least you didn't trigger the crash there
Worth noting: Sonic 2 was not designed with an achievement system in mind.
Can't say I've seen that before xD
22:04 What!? That is so stupid! I didn't even know about that xD
27:28 Screw that friggin' glitched ass hitbox badnik. "Thanks asshole!". I concur
I have to agree with the level design complaint. Most of them are just "hold right to win". And the ones that aren't are usually bad
I'm so glad I know I'm not the only one who hates Metropolis Zone. That level is the worst and I'm playing it on ORIGIN.
2:25 it so you can have more opportunities to get the chaos emeralds during the stage because of that there are enough checkpoints to get all the chaos emeralds in emerald hill zone is because there are a lot of checkpoints in different paths of the level and in hiding locations
0:19 32,you said..... It's even more than mobile port has,but it's kinda another story I guess-
30:41 This is a Common problem in classic Sonic games, Ii f theres a little interruption on the ground (like small gaps, intersections, platform change) You have to press down again to roll again
guys im starting to think that sonic 2 is a great video game that is well designed and better than its prequel in every way possible
