Four Imprezas, a total of 1,184bhp and a mile-long strip of tarmac... the battle of the hardcore Subaru special editions is on!
A manic chorus of turbo engines is followed by a screech from the tyres as our competitors catapult off the line. And with 119bhp more than the next most powerful car here, the new Cosworth-tuned Impreza this should find this a walk in the park -- especially given that its rivals today are 10 years older.

22B = best subaru of all time
22B would be my choice, It is to Subaru what the F40 is to Ferrari.
My two favourite cars
99´ 💙⚒
The 22b, the original and still the best!
Agree, nice wide arches and a 2 door.
MrYoumitube
linzitazim The 22B is my favourite Subaru, and I have a model of one too.
No it wasn't. For whatever reason the 22b wasnt the same in the uk and in japan. In japan it lost against an evo 5 and even a normal type r sti. In the Uk it was tuned by prodrive and that helped a lot apparently.
@@marfrandema1884 So what, there are how many cars in the world that are faster than a 22b. Same as a Ferrari f40, or a McLaren f1 but true car enthusiast know which car they would get if money was no object.
Basically all this has proved is that the 22B is still wicked and that it deserves all the respect it has earned.
Would smash a stock 09 wrx sti . Leave if for dead
@@coopsnz1 imagine what’s a build 22b could do
a mile drag race is so stupid because usually after 1,2 mile it just because a pure horsepower race
the best imprezas ever made are the 1996 to 2006
VF28WWE Damn right! I own a '06 sti, but only because a clean 22b is a fuckin unicorn.
***** True, but from the "Bug Eye '02" to the "Hawk Eye '06 the chassis only changes slightly.
VF28WWE mine just made it LOLz
late 2006?
VF28WWE Early 06 or late 06, either is all good. Hell, the only difference between the 2006 and 2007 models are the lighter weight lower control arms in the 2006. Saves about 30 pounds using the aluminum over the steel.
I would still take the 22B
that test didn't make any sense at all.....he brings a modified 09 impreza to test it against stock older ones???and he didn't mension anything about theri rarity. people should respect the gc8's...these things were wrc legends! (and of course look a whole lot better than the new ones too)
Gc8s are everywhere in NZ lol most common Subarus on the road until maybe only a recent couple of years ago
The advert just before the video was of the new Nissan juke and it said "this is how driving should feel". The way it abruptly changed to a impreza four wheel drifting around a hairpin was perfect
Complete bullshit test. Would help if the tester could actually drive! That has to be one of the worst starts to any drag race I have ever seen, and the 20mph slalom test we a bit of a joke as well, seriously what does it prove when you are going at car park speeds? Nothing about true handling or driftability here. Nothing about feedback, sound, sensation, interior features or comfort etc..... Utterly useless. All it proved was the new car is quicker, which we all knew anyway. I could have arranged a better test than this myself.
So ya'll are gonna act like you didn't see the bike passing at 3:39???
hahahaha
+Melvin Gitau LOL what was it im going for a kwaka 1000 you?
+Mark Norman (JustSaiyan) The front looks like a honda cbr600rr when I paused it
+Spencer Geerlings Yehp could be its going so much faster the a scubies lol its hard to tell!!
Melvin Gitau got sum eyes you to spot that 👀
Obviously the guy driving has no skills at all on the slalom test .....
Even though im Team Evo, i gotta admit, those older Impreza's look'd delicious.
RIP Colin McRae
Well a 22b is now worth more than twice as much as a CS400.
The bug eyed/blob eyed version is shocking....the P1 and 22B are legendary..the best looking imprezas to this very day
22B was the best
22B ! The best impreza Subaru every built.
Colin McRae had the Subaru impreza 22b prototype. It was one of 3 built (at the time). Best of all time.
i can watch the first 25 seconds all-day-long and not get bored ... i love it
Wild bike appears at 3:41
ive got a 1998 impreza :))) best :))
Fabulous work for the 22b giving the Cosworth a run for its money. Always reigned in my heart, always will.
I Have a 2014 STi I bought new 2 years ago. I'd happily trade it for a 22B. The 2-door cars handle MUCH better. The newer cars are too big, and too heavy.
I had that, then got a final edition this month (uk) and there is very little difference over the 4 years
As a 2013 sti owner.. I always felt like my car was much inferior compared to the older models but in time i notice how i never struggle to keep up with my friends and fellow subie owners. The big problem is the 2.5l and it's weaknesses which won't allow us to get too crazy with upgrades.. Anothet thing that i miss is the drama and violence which older models can offer, our cars are better balanced and honestly i hate it because they feel slower even if they aren't. As i always say: turbo lag is a feature.
The cosworth is supposed to be 1 second faster to 60, and yet the 22b smoked him off the line. I heard from the 22b owner that the cosworth only really got past him when the speed was around 120mph+.
If that was a normal quarter mile, it would have been 22b 2 cosworth 1.
In any event, I love the 22b, and own one myself. I cant see myself ever getting a cosworth, simply because I dont think they're any good. Too heavy.
I am thinking of buying a 90's impreza(the one and only aside 01 model). Do you happen to know how many km2/miles those engines last? Since i live in North Eastern Europe, its not the most avaible car. Most i have seen in local car portals have 250km2 to 318km2 driven.
Lol...why do you think they raced for a mile?
The 22b. Still an awesome car.
Well. That was a fair test! The RB5 was bound to be the slowest there, but the 22B, P1 and RB5 have got it on looks and charisma, who wouldn't want a 22B over a that cosworth Subaru, I think Subaru lost the plot when the went the ford focus shape way.
Now the 22B is 50k and you can pick up the Cosworth for under 30k. 22B UK model seen here would be even more. Missed the boat :-(
hello im from the future. 22b's are now more like 100k cheers.
@@kemurikusari9629 Hello from even more future. 22B 2 recently sold for $315K and $370K
jdm 22b for me......
UK ones were faster as they were tuned by prodrive
98 over any other anyday.
I love the p1 and 22B
trouble is there are still 2 very nice sti imprezas other than these, rb320 and the blob wr1
22B will always be the king 👑 of Impreza’s 👍
22b all day long - by far the best scooby - and it will always be the car i can't afford :(
i just love subaru
Dat remix of Top Gun's Danger Zone, ITS AMAZING!
That 22b would give it a run for its money on a proper track.
what is the name for the first song in the video?
+Teemu Itkonen Hi sir, my country is Mauritius and law restrict us from doing so..
u are from which country ??
22b love!!
The rb5 is a special edition wrx. The others are special edition sti. So that's why it's slower mostly
What about the lichfield Type-25? Pretty sure that was a good 400 odd bhp with a cosworth motor. Bloody rare too.
22b is the best impreza made, love the body style much better then hatchback.
sti type r wrc limited, faster than p1 ?
Wasnt the Litchfield Impreza STI the most powerful scooby? 415 bhp
CAME FOR 22B
I want to see cos brz Sti. I have friends who sold their impreza Sti for the brz w the ej22?
not "impretza", more like.. "impreza"
Why a 400hp sti? would have been a little more interesting to see how it would've gone with a newer stock sti.
ALPHA OMEGA FAITH MAJESTY Nigga stfu with your all caps got damn
I want a 22b so bad
Of course he's going to slalom the best in the car he's used to driving... what the hell is this?
@MrCooltoni They did bring back the WRX and STI in 4 door sedan forms, so the odd looking hatch isn't the only way to go now.
22B and evo 6 t.m.e. best of the breeds and still winning to this day
I'll take the 22b over anything!!
because they're also quick in a straight line..and they wanted to show what the extra horsepower will do for acceleration.
The 22B would still be my choice, albeit with an STi 6 speed swap
22B i love that car!
Whats with the random motorcycle on the track lol
I would take the 22B. I guess that if you remove some weight and add a bit of engine tuning, it would prove better than the Cosworth.
Colin McRae's favourite was the 22b which he had in his garage!
A very fast and classic car!
The original shape Impreza before the 'bug eye' and later versions are still the best ones!
pretty nice biased review.
If you couldn't tell just by how much he was boasting about the cosworth. You can clearly see it when he went a lot harder with it than the other three on the slalom course.
ontheroad619 He did recommend you not to buy his car tho, he said to pick one of the other 3. So i don't think he is as bias as you think, remember his car IS smaller probably lighter and more agile so in comparison the others looked slow, so I think it was totally down to his car being faster and better which it should be.
+Chris “Kicks” T A GC heavier than GR? Lol.
+Chris “Kicks” T his car is a 2.5L so more tq but that being said the older cars are something like 2800lb vs the newer cars being 3400lb or something like that. I have a 99 WRX GC8 and it gives off the sensation of a much more pure experience vs the newer cars. but that being said the newer cars are much more refined for daily use.
22b Awesome car!
Adding in that Cosworth just was not fair.
Also, what is it with British video editing? This, Top Gear, and most other British documentaries edit the background music to be way too loud! I would much rather have listened to the engine noises during the drag race than that horrible music.
What was that motorbike doing at 3:42
no wr1?
In today's market the subaru impreza 22b is valued around 150k
Nice Test!!:D
This was a very interesting test, it showed us that the RB5 is just an average impreza but sold as a special edition. Also the 22b is the superior car, you already raced the 22b and lost if you did a mile race. No love for the P1
The red one is rear foglight, the other one is reverse light.... Brake lights are the outside ones..
People in the comment section forgot about the fact that the 22b is a 2.2 litre and not a 2.5
WR1?
Good to see a juxtaposition between the GOOD looking Imprezas, rather than the new ugly one. Old Imprezas for the win.
A subaru impreza 22b with no miles has just sold in the USA for £295.000.
wheres the bugeye or blobeye versions would have been nice to see a fair comparison of all versions of the mighty scooby =)
whats with the one red brake light at 1:41? dafuq?
22b sti is 140k in Australia now , cheap in uk
Our replica of the p1 30 - 50 k
Japanese built wrx sti limted edition cost that . I have build number 19- 2000 in the world
22b in uK go for over £90,000 so mega bucks! The Cosworths are going for a minimum £35,000 still so get one why you can they will go up in price as the P1’s disappear with time.
lol at the bike at 3:40
Can you pull away in a car at all lol, the drag and slalom was like my mum trying to pull away fast haha.
Save yourself a packet and go with... a 22B? Dream on! If you ever found one it would be a hell of a lot more than that.
3:40 - you saw the bike passing by with super high speed?
Sure making the STI as a hatchback wasn't the best idea, but you can't deny that, despite appearances, it's still quite a good car and dynamically it's wastly superior to the STI's of the 90's
Personally they should of had a blobeye, hawkeye and the bugeye aswell out on the track aswell as the scoobys they had :)
if there is less than 400 units built, then its not counted as a production car, so I guess it wouldn't really count (assuming there is less than 400?)
and this is the new cosworth , wich sad enough is placed in a fugly new hatchback.
DerLast I love the direct message on that one.
The gc8's need new bushings and struts to be a fair test.
Chris Martinez and brembos
I want the 22B
22b would be amazing, i dont think they made too many of them, i doubt they would sell for 20,000
I've heard about the type 25. comes with Porsche brakes.. they should have compare one too.
22B please
Of course he would win the last test because hes comfortable with that car..
22B ALL THE WAY!
I'm not really feeling the Cosworth. I'd have it over the other 3 but if someone were to offer me the choice between it and the old Escort Cossie, I'd have the Ford in a heartbeat
I don't like subaru, but the 22b looks gorgeous :0
thats amazing the 22B beat him on the stopping, it has no ABS.
So how is this guy just gonna casually ignore the 22B?? Yes the Cosworth is truly amazing but my guy that's a 22B the Icon for Subaru, the pinnacle. Lol
Ever heard of Litchfield?
@Technoboy1000 No, the best turbo setup in the Subaru is the twin scroll as you get on the JDM cars. The Legacy's have the twin turbo setup and it is crap.
well the UK22b is slower than the Japanese one. I would want to see it go up against a Japanese 22b
Auto express why don't you put a decent classic Impreza on against the cosworth instead of the shitty mild tuned uk versions get a import Sti on there against it
Ordinary Blazin yeah like a type r instead of the p1 or type ra or spec c
To be fair I don't think 22b owner was flat out. It's a bit special to risk blowing it up
They were doing 100mph? How freaking fast was that bike going at 3 minutes 40? 2 Billion mph?
