Seriously though, I've seen N1 WRC in person a few times now (it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up) but I haven't seen it being driven properly like that since Colin. Great stuff, what a machine!
I remember watching Colin McRae in the Impreza at Rally Australia in the mid 1990's - spectacular, impressive and any other adjective you can think of!
The P18WRC impreza actually raced, but never officially: it was bought in 1999 by Procar and run by Diego Oldrati. The N1WRC in 1997 was bought by Franco Uzzeni and Aimont Racing, before they were bought back by Subaru. So both those cars were exported in Italy for a long time.

I like the idea that the Group A needed to be driven to get the most out of it, I think that's been lost a bit in the current form of the WRC. The drivers were stars because...well you had to be, to drive the things quick and the car brands were all unique in their own way.
Love the look of the 22b but the 555 sound does it for me!

Oh My God How Much i LOVE the Group A sound!!! it's my absolutely favourite Music comin from a car engine....there are no Ferrari or Lamborghini noises that can replace this......

I worked with jeff jones last year for a few weekends on the brc and hes one real nice guy. I belive he used to drove works proton/nissan cars

The torque vectoring on this car is obvious, too bad the production version of STI doesn't have it. But you can clearly see how it pushes the car into a turn from behind.

i lvoe my 05 wrx. us spec. street stock.. but with mud tires.. great for mud and snow and what
hmm it seems that setup is as much the reason for the WRC and group A differences. An aggressive tarmac setup on both would be more interesting, but yes modern rally cars make it easier for the driver as it's faster.

Ahaha funny i just bought a "modest" 2011 subaru impreza 5 door 2.5i (no turbocharged models i.e wrx/ wrx sti) but my goodness the subaru is so rewarding too drive so was the mitsubishi lancer of its same class... but I picked up the impreza...very understated car compared to its more praised older brothers. ( have test driven the sti but not the evo x)

ThaReal CLo you're talking about homologation which hasn't been required for decades even the group a cars had different gearbox (some of the cosworths had 7 speed sequential)
none of the wrc spec cars are relevant to the road cars, even impreza and evo. homologation must return for the wrc to be any good.

does the WRC car have active diff's? Is the Group A car more powerful? Does the Group A car still have a top mounted intercooler? Does the WRC car have equal length headers? Twenty years on and I still can't get full accurate specs on the differences between these two cars.
Ric James id be surprised if works group a from 96 didn't have active diffs let alone wrc

Colin McRae won the World Rally Championship in 1995 not 1996. 1996 World Rally Champion was Tommi Makinan.
He said the race winning car for 1996 rally Catalunya, not the yearly championship, and he's correct.
What he tried to emphasise was that the car itself was actually raced and won, not the other two.

I understand fully the capability of the current grp "n" impreza.... it is over rated and slow, in most domestic championships in 2010 it got its arse handed to it by the evo x... the other 2 cars in this video are icons.... nearly as big as the legend who developed and drove them.. a gentleman i had the pleasure of meeting twice in my life... Colin still is my own personal hero and the fact that 2.58 of this vid is wasted on a PR attempt from Prodrive is a waste in my humble opinion ..
