Now that am older and have been used to the convenience of a hatchback as a daily drive, these are now becoming really attractive.

Lol no it's not. They blow up even if they're 100% stock. The only way the engine MIGHT not blow up is if you never actually get on it and go full throttle. But then that just defeats the purpose of having a performance car, might as well get a base Impreza at that point.

Currently have a 2012 WRX Hatchback Premium and it has been my dream car for 8 years.
Got it 2 years ago and haven't regretted it.
The car is basically 100% stock mechanically; Catback exhaust + a GFB Blow Off Valve.
It's currently got 208,000km and stock engine, stock transmission, etc is from the factory.
People underestimating the power a WRX has is crazy. They're plenty fast enough for street fun and they put you back in your seat hard.
Problems that can arise is leaking oil (Often from rocket cover gaskets or turbo seals) and / or burning oil (Often from sticky oil control rings around your pistons.)
After an engine flush, it made the rings 'unstuck' and was able to keep oil in and blow by has significantly decreased.
Subarus are known to burn oil so don't be surprised if yours does.
Don't service them every 10,000-12,00km; do it every 5000km and keep everything clean.
Overall (My experience atleast) has been a solid 10/10. I bought it at 144,00km with full service history every 7000km.
If your going to buy a WRX or STI, please get one bone stock or close to it. Do your own modifications and take them to a reputable workshop.
Lastly, don't flog the fk out of it. Put your foot down here and there but don't be red-lining it constantly.

I own a 14 WRX hatch. I bought it new, and after 9 years the engine blew. The car only has 56k miles and I take it to the Subaru dealership for regular maintenance. The car is completely stock, and never took it on the track. The clutch did get squeaky like he mentioned, and the paint is really thin. Love this car, but it broke my heart that the engine blew. Left me and my wife stranded on the highway and didn’t get home until 4 am.

There’s a reason the “stink eye” was the last chassis to compete in the WRC, the VA is/was too large (weight and dimensions wise) to be close to competitive. Subaru made that car fat and wide to appeal to normies and the masses and it shows thru and thru. I also didn’t say the GR is the best handling generation. But to say the VA handles better is a hilarious cope.

I bought a 2006 WRX STI 8 years ago at 125,000kms (original engine) for $21k. It's now 212,000kms and the only issues I've experienced was: Radiator. Fans. Clutch. CV Boots. Thermostat. Rocker cover gaskets were leaking recently and fixed that up. Overall maintenance (i.e. Fluids) and replacing it all myself over the last 8 years has probably been about $3500 all up. It's been a daily driver, driven on average 3-4 days a week and it's probably been the most reliable and low maintenance car I've owned (compared to a Ford Falcon, Mitsubishi Lancer and Toyota Yaris).
Occasional spirited driving, mostly driving off-boost when not out cruising with groups or friends. It's been great. Spent 7 years of it's life in Darwin, NT and now in SE QLD.
Only thing I can recommend is that if you plan to buy one of these cars, learn how to do regular maintenance yourself and have mechanical sympathy. Never let the oil drop past 3/4 as EJ257s motors can be easy oil starved. Don't lug the motor as the ringlands are prone to failure.

  • @akane-1
    @akane-1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

Ray here. I was a Subaru only performance tech for over 4 years. You did very well with this review, only a couple of things to add:
    - Running 98 octane fuel is a minimum. They “say” 95 is ok but the factory tune prefers to wait until it knocks to pull timing instead of having safe ignition tables for Australia. That added safety margin will keep a “daily driven with mechanical sympathy” STI alive. Detonation is death on these motors with there factory glass pistons.
-If you are going to buy ANY Subaru turbo 2.5L, or any Subaru turbo model in general, a compression test and leak down test is a MUST! I cannot stress how important this is.
Due to the “subie rumble” exhaust note most people won’t pick up if the engine is hurt/running rough unless you have years of experience and a keen ear for these engines.
Any proper seller will have no problem performing these tests if they have nothing to hide and the few hundred it may cost extra to the purchase can save you well over $10,000 (the average cost to rebuild a mild performance motor addressing the factory weak points).
-power steering pumps fail, rear shocks leak, sometimes rust forms on the pinch welds around the rear hatch and cheap pads and rotors will have the brembo’s squeeling like a pig.
The good? The Subaru STI has a sort of “character” which will keep you addicted to the car and funneling money into it like a lonely millionaire at an “adult establishment”
Keep up the great work 👍

The removable cup holder piece: put it in the back cupholder, makes the front one deep enough for a large coffee without getting in the way of the shifter. The rear remains at the right depth for a medium or small coffee without touching your arm while driving. It's a little neat idea that makes a big difference and was cheap to make 🤙🏾

    DOES AND DONTS
DO get a good intake or downpipe and get protuned buy a reputable Subaru expert. This will highly improve the torque curve and solve tuning issues.
DO NOT go Stage 2 or more without upgrading the fuel system. Also, Bigger turbo = built block.
DO get an IAG Air Oil Separator, cylinder 4 cooling mod and better radiator. Torque and excess heat kill these engines.
DO NOT install a BOV if you are not running speed density.
DO use 5w-40 oil instead of 5w-30.
DO change your fluids and sparkplugs ahead of time.
DO let the oil get up to operating temperature before getting into boost.

Great video, I own a 09 hatch STI in South Africa which I'm sure is pretty much the same right hand spec as the Australian ones. I am not a mechanic nor an expert but in my 9 years of owning it here are some of the things I've learnt:
    1. Engine - Pull the Oil dip stick out when the car is running. If you see white puffs of smoke coming out then it probably has Ringland failure (I wish I knew this when I bought mine). I bought the car at 50k km and the piston rings where broken and pieces of the pistons had broken off. ScoobyWorx rebuilt the motor with forged wiesco pistons for me with a stock map and I'm on 125k km now and all is still strong. Picking up a second hand one with a forged motor or just forged pistons with a stock tune would also be a benefit in my opinion.
    2. Fuel - We only get 95 octane petrol so make sure your map is correct for your fuel and don't use anything less. We tend to over fuel a bit so a puff of black smoke out the back would'nt be considered a bad thing in your rear view mirror on occasion as you really don't want your engine running lean.
    3. Other issues I've had - Boot button is electric and the rubber protection comes off so try not get it wet else it won't work. Recaro seat height adjustment also broke. Paint is the softest substance on earth so try not scratch it...
All in all, it's a great car that always puts a smile on anyone's face that drives it.

As someone who loves Subaru - This car is probably the cheapest WRX and STi you can get on the market.
    Originally having a GC8 and my ex-partners father having a GC8 2-door STI - my G3 STi-R doesn't give the same OMMMFFF as those.
That being said - the GC8 had some life issues, the boot was surprisingly not life proof and people would constantly want to race me. The GC8 STI was that on steroids (and being on the Gold Coast, u were either just outgunned by AMGs or tailgated by Commodores or Falcons).
The G3 WRX/STI... great balance of power and life-proofing without looking toooooo bad (Looks at the GF8). A throttle controller in cabin out of the box (in the STI), which is great when im driving casually 99% of the time, and a boot you can actually put a A2 box in. Camping? Yes. Road Trip? Yes! Beach day? Yes! that Snorlax foam couch that EBgames once sold for $200 that didnt fit in my old GC8 but fit in a Mazda 2? Yes!
Is it the GOAT of WRX's or STi's - hard no.
Is it a car that with the proper care will serve you faithfully and through many different life situations and stages? Yes.
You're not going to get around the Subaru EJ engine issues no matter what series - each has their own problems. Can it be mitigated with timely services and fixes - definitely.
Is it the fastest of the WRX series? No - definitely not. But you're also going to be overlooked for hoons or cops because let's face it - you wouldn't be watching this video if you through this car was a hoon machine. Don't let looks decieve you - this car can pull it's own weight (and they're thiccccccc).
If you're looking for a 4wd hatchback that has a bit of power with the ability to carry you through each life stage, the G3 series is an excellent starting point to exploring your options. And with a massive market for aftermarket parts that don't break the bank too much, you can make this car your own.

    GFB adjustable BoV
    200kwatw / 400nm Tq
    185k kms.
She's loud, purrs and spools up very quickly - even in it's lowest settings.
Had the chance to buy another car during my time when looking for vehicle? As much as I'd love to say yes and get an Evo8MR, I don't think it would have served me as well or through my various life stages as I have had to date.
That's what this car brings - life proof with a bit of power behind it.

As an owner of a 2013 WRX hatch, I really appreciate this video. Of course while not being an STI, this still mostly applies to my car and it points out inherent flaws and weaknesses that a new owner should be aware of. That being said, it also shows the good side of these cars and really allows for a buyer to understand the car and who it's for. The biggest gripe that I have with mine is of course the factory stereo. It is quite bland and even with Serious XM, Bluetooth compatibility, and a factory optioned subwoofer, It still leaves a lot to be desired as far as usability. A close second is probably the interior. While I am not that bothered by the quality of the plastic, it does squeak quite a bit as compared to other cars I've driven. Of course, that's easily remedied by just blasting some tunes, but its worth paying attention to if you're the quiet drive type. Overall, I love my car and I can't imagine myself getting rid of it but I will definitely be referring anyone that's interested in buying one to this video.

Subaru had that cool aggressive look in this model, now the newer ones look like just another conservative Japanese car with a bit of sportiness to it. It has had an engine rebuild, thanks to Michael South Engineering (MSR).
With forged pistons, stronger rods, flex fuel, it has tons of torque.
Also a gearbox rebuild due the centre diff viscous coupling causing a thumping noise when warmed up.
I have updated the technology with a Pioneer head unit with Android Auto.

Great video with amazing background work, awesome job! I used to own an STi like this, fantastic car and a perfect daily driver / weekend racer. Interior rattling was my biggest gripe that needed some effort to minimize and kind of loud on highways with road noise. Storage space is great with the hatchback and you have no issues hauling around people in it either, I was overall very happy with my ownership, although now I drive a 2012 STi sedan because.... big sti wing in rear view mirror :)

I had a 2010 wrx. Sold it at 134k miles. The ONLY major thing that happened to it was my throw out bearing died making the car undriveable. That happened about 125k. But replaced it for about 900 parts and labor, and boom. Everything was good to go again, for another 100+ miles!
Interior was just really drab, and the sound was not the best…

    Great review.
For me, these Subarus are a little bit special. With the boxer engine, their unique sound and a brilliant AWD system, they have real soul and character. They are a bit 'different', and that appeals to me.
Between 2015 and 2020 I owned and daily drove a MY11 WRX (the first of the wide bodies). Such a fun car. I sold it on to buy something a bit btter suited to family life but really miss it. Mine had about 60k on it when I bought it and had just had a clutch replaced under warranty (collapsed pressure plate).
I put another 60k on it and the one and only fault I had with it was a failed brake pedal switch. Very common on Subarus but a replacement switch from the dealer is only about $20 and replacement takes about 2 minutes......
Even with 120k on the clock, it was still on the same brake pads that it left the factory with, and they still had plenty of meat left!

I think the WRX of this generation is better suited for street driving. The STI is too difficult to drive for some reason. The WRX is easier to drive and lighter. I’ve driven both so I know, and currently have a ‘13 STI.

@@williamnguyen6859 For one, its difficult to get going from a stop. Even on a stock clutch, I stall my car from time to time. Also, I don’t really like the notchy feeling when you shift into gear on the 6-speed gearbox. It feels unnatural. The body of the car is stiffer and heavier than the WRX.
I think you should drive both and see which one fits your needs best.

I’ll say this much, mate: head gaskets, while very important, are, fortunately, dirt cheap! They’re just a couple pieces of thin metal, and are decently easy to replace, whereas with certain high end Italian cars often have issues with snapped connecting rods, which are a great deal more expensive and challenging to replace. Ferraris. Ahem. Regardless, if you get a car that’s know to have a weak link, prevention is better than the cure; replace that part.

Had a 2014 STI I bought brand new, daily driven for 7 years before I sold it. The North America Navigation head unit was terrible, laggy, and liked to take the scenic route. The brake light switch failed, I replaced it, and a month later Subaru issued a recall. The engine suddenly failed without warning at 31,000 miles, dealer blamed the oil pump, replaced engine and turbo under warranty.
The worst part? I sold it at the end of 2020 for $24,000.Not bad, right? THEN the used car market went nuts and Subaru discontinued the STI, and I could have probably gotten almost what I paid for it new.
