@ Matthew Norton, with your current mileage have you had any issues associated with carbon build up in the sky active engine? Since these are direct injected only, I was wondering if people with high mileage have experienced issues? I'm asking because there have been a few for sale in my area but I've held back only for the issue of carbon build up. Thanks!
I had a 2014 just like this, with the i-eloop system. It is one vehicle that I always wish I had kept. The miata bug hit me and I traded it for the 2016 when it came out. I really like your style of review, it was really easy to watch.
Saw someone else with a pre refresh 6 with the i-eloop and without skipping a beat mentioned it already went out, but the rest of the car is problem free. My 2016 6 just hit 70k miles and other than increasingly audible general wear/tear items, absolutely nothing even moderate other than the low profile tires needing replacement pretty quickly...

That factory appearance package is sweet. Wish I had that. Thanks for sharing! Maybe I'll see you around boulder sometime.

I'm considering buying a used one so I really appreciate this review (wish you would have spoken a little bit about driving with this transmission). I know. Its not so much a long term review as it is this guy justifying his purchase, 6 years later. I have a 2014 hatch that I got 2 years ago, in march of 2018. Theres things I would say other than "It has this nice wheel here", or "look at my tires!".
I mean....I'd say having "I wish" and "I enjoy" notes is a decent long term review. Sure the content could be a little more thorough, but overall it's not bad. I'd say maintenance and reliability would be the only thing I'm really missing. That said, the fact that nothing stood out as particularly bad? That says good things too. Same with the materials.
Theres not too much to say honestly, the mileage and maintenance has been what you would probably expect. around 30mpg as advertised and nothing but regular maintenance. The only flaws with the interior are the center console armrest hinge which breaks easily and some creaks and rattles.
@@coleG112 it's a pretty solid car that I would (and do) recommend to most people. However, the car is what it is. By the I mean that there are essentially no meaningful mods you can do to this car.
Good job on the review. I’ve recently grown to love the styling on that gen Mazda 3. I had a 2014 Mazda 6 with a manual and a couple mods that I ended up selling, but I still miss driving that car at times.
Alright TFL, more Kase 🙂. His first review was excellent, and what made his first review everything was reviewing his daily driver. He's southern, so that in itself is awesome, and I was like yeah solidarity seeing Kase is from Georgia. I went to college in North Carolina, and I love southerners. I too also have a 2014 model year car that's my daily driver, a VW Jetta 😁. Again, excellent review Kase.
The seats in my 2015 Mazda3 fold flat. I have to get the handbrake cable replaced this year, new tires for summer, the transmission fluid changed, the weather stripping in the driver door frame replaced and the trim piece at the top of the driver door replaced. I was just in for the oil change and the brakes are still in good shape, the suspension is fine. Love my car.
I've got a 2014 GT at the top trim and engine level. Only 3 problems in 6 years. There was an issue with the belt tensioner having a sharp edge that snapped the belt twice. The battery froze, which I actually think is caused by my block heater possibly not working. The infotainment center sometimes goes haywire and selects random functions. Other than that it has been a very reliable car for 140,000 km. Very happy with it. Now if only Mazda would build a pickup truck again I would trade it in.
My 2018 Mazda 3 Touring is an awesome little car! Quick, handles well & dependable. I’m thinking of upstanding to the new body style or a Mazda 6. Mazda truly makes one of the best interiors for the money.
Hi, I have a 2016 mazda top spec which I bought new, please consider your options carefully before buying. Don't rely on looks. I have had a few issues with my mazda 3 that the dealership refused to fix for free in spite of the warranty. Currently there's my tensioner that needs fixing, mazda fixed it for free about a year and a half ago, but the same issue is happening and now they want $800 to fix it. There's also my starter motor that they say is noisy and reccomend that I change at the "low" price of $550. Last year I changed my serpentine belt at mazda for the "cheap" price of $650. I love my mazda and the way they drive and always drive it very conservatively, but for the sake of my pocket, my next car will be a toyota.
I got a black 2014 iSport hatchback back in 2015 brand new - so the most barebones Mazda 3 you could get. I've had it for almost 10 years now, and only put about 75k miles on it. But it still drives like an absolute dream, and is still BONKERS FUN up until this very day! I have so much fun bullying a lot of fast drivers on the NJ, PA, & NYC highways around me🤣 While I will never be able to literally keep up with most cars on the road, you'll still catch me blast 80+ mph on the highways often, blasting by most drivers. The car only really "feels" slow when you're trying to accelerate. But when you're already flying fast, and you still feel how much control you have with this car, that's how you know you are driving an incredible machine ❤ I feel bad that I want to trade mine in for the new Mazda 3 Turbo....
I had a ‘15 Mazda3 for over 2 years. One of the nicest looking AND surprisingly economical drives I’ve ever owned. If our family hadn’t made a priority of camping in a travel trailer, I’d still be driving my Mazda3 hatchback. Like you, the only down side I knew for my mid-level version was road noise. Even mine with the 2.0L was plenty fast with the 6 sped auto. You just had to make the request with a small lead time so the trans dropped a gear and let the motor spin up. Sweet ride, and great review!!
Very professional i hope the will give you more air time. Your review almost literally described my experience with my work commuter which is 14 Mazda 2, i do over 100 miles a day and every single one is fun in this little car
184 hp, not a lot?? I drove compact cars with 4 cylinders from GM in this class in the late 90s and 2000s that made anywhere from 140hp-155hp. The Mazda3 makes a good amount of power especially for a car it's size. It's especially torquey in the low range. Hatchback is only better if you're hauling a lot of stuff.
Brillant and thoughtful review. This young man is going places. I have a Mazda 3 sedan from 2014 and very much agrees with your observations except that the sedan really is looking more spiffy compared to the hatch.
We have a 2017 Mazda 3 Sedan with the 2.5 and manual transmission. My wife has already put about 70,000 miles on it in less than 3 years and it has been problem free! Great car and super fun to drive!
40k hasn't even broken in the engine. I own a 2014 Mazda 3 and have put a whopping 135k and the thing still gets 34/37 mpg highway and has yet to give me a problem. These skyactive engines are reliable and Mazda has stepped up their game. Looking to get the 2020 hatch AWD soon.
I got my first car at the beginning of this month and im absolutely in love 14 MZ3 Manual with 117kms on her and im absolutely in love! A ton of fun but not enough fun to get me into any trouble😂
My mom recently got a 2018 3 top trim hatch. And man its such a nice car. The auto trans is nice too. The torque converter locks right away which makes it feel way more “sporty”, sense itll keep revs sense the motor and trans are in linked together, plus it responds pretty fast when using it in “manual” mode. Big plus when in cruise control, itll downshift and upshift as needed to maintain speed. Its got some dunlops and its very nice. Handles great. And rides well.
A few years ago my dad purchased a 2014 mazada 3, i believe it was the touring version with a 2.0 l motor and manual transmission, and that transmission was really a pleasure to drive.
I currently own a 2017 Mazda 3. Its a 6 speed manual with the 2.0L. My goal for hp is at least 155hp to the wheels. It will be 4 years this November of 2021. Almost done paying it off. $8,900 left! I do a lot of driving and have 103,000 miles. I have basic mods such as The K&N intake, Corksport rear engine mount, Tanabe strut bar, red top Optima battery, ceramic brake pads with slotted rotors on the front and drilled and slotted in the rear. I would love to get an exhaust and wheels and tires but it's expensive. I can't afford almost $2,000!
Great reviewer, a welcome addition to the TFL team! I just wish you got into more detail of ownership costs, reliability and any annoying issues a buyer should be aware of.
My 2015 Mazda 3 Grand Touring i Soul Red hatchback looks like yours without the add-ons. My quick review. I chose the 2.0 engine. It's pretty peppy and doesn't leave me wanting. The gas mileage is very good. I've never re-set the gas mileage meter since new and it says 34.3 MPG and that's with all sorts of driving. The Soul Red looks good but scratches easily. The original Yokohama tires got super noisy around 30,000 miles and the upgraded Yokohama tires I installed quieted things down. The command knob must be used for navigation, radio etc when driving and it's a pain. You must navigate through a long list of "favorites" you set up to find your station among all sources. Much scrolling. All told though, it's great handling, handsome and reliable car with great gas mileage.
Lol. I still have my 2014 Mazda3 2.0 liter manual with 82,000 miles. It has no rattles or creaks, the manual short throws and shifts like new. Have Michelin tires now. It's pretty quick with manual and I feel like I have total control of the car
Bought my 2015 I-Touring in Mar 2015 and 8 years later and the only breakdown were some speakers. I have an extended comprehensive from the Mazda dealer out to 2026 so the speakers were covered. Love the car. The blind spot monitoring on side view mirrors was standard on the I Touring then. Love the car. No reason for me to get rid of as I cannot replace my satisfaction with this car with another I know of. Of note, I replaced the standard antenna with a shark fin with no impact on the high def radio. It looks like a a Gran Touring with the shark fin antenna.
I do like the side view styling of the Mazda3, this one shows that. I have never owned a Mazda, although I do like the design of the models,..here where I live, it just seems that the one dealer in my area, is not 'hungry' enough for business, and friends I have, find the same 'feeling' when we visit the dealership,...strange! ( but that's a local issue here, I know ) This '3' as shown here, (owned by Case) has the right color to attract and add to it's looks, it is too bad it's not equipped with a manual transmission,.....but that 2.5 engine is apparently, bullet proof. Good video Case, you've presented it well!
My first Mazda 3 was a 2010 2.0L sedan with the manual. Loved it as it was very fun to drive for a A to B car. Unfortunately that car was totaled. I replaced it with a used 2014 base Mazda 3 sedan with the manual. The 2014 has been a great replacement. Better mpg, better interior, better exterior styling, and still fun to drive.
Beautiful review. I love the fart noises it makes. I am in between the 6 speed manual or 6spd auto. I have been looking at this gen for a few weeks as I will be using it as my daily. Retiring a high mileage Yaris and ready for something a little more fun.
They much have changed it for the 2015 model year because I have a 2.5L with a 6-speed manual transmission in my 2015 3S Touring Hatchback and I love the car. As of this morning i have just over 97,000 on it and it's been flawless as my daily driver.
My 2014 is on its second transmission. Due to a manufacturing defect, most automatic transmissions of this year experience bearing failure in the differential, and begin making a loud whining noise that is speed dependent. I am considering buying a manual 3, because this car is otherwise very reliable. But im also afraid if the differential in the manual might fail too.
I got 53000 miles on my 2016 astina. In south africa we only got the 2 litere sky active engine and it only came in a 6 speed auto... Ive kept mine completely stock same castrol 5w30 oil always but ive only had to top it once... It doesnt burn oil i am just worried theve never changed the transmission fluid or spark plugs. I want to keep the car forever. Its really had no issues beside premature brake pad wear and a few cracks on the driver plather seat. Was also wondering that since its a GDI will it benefit from an oil catch can?. It jerks very slightly when i pull away after a cold start
I installed BC BR coilovers on a low and stiff setting. It reduced the body roll considerably and with some motegi alluminum wheels and firestone indy 500 summer tires shes driving amazing.
You should talk Kase into joining 3rd Gen Mazda3 Owners on Facebook. A lot of people in there would enjoy seeing his car. This video has been shared in the group twice that I have seen. Also, I have a 2016 with 94,000 miles and I still love it haha
These are awesome cars. I have a 2018 3 hatchback that I’ve somehow already driven 54,000 miles and it’s been nothing but a great car. It’s my first Mazda and won’t be my last now.
I also had a soul red sGT with the appearance package. It had a 198k miles and was paid off after 5years. Got it when it first came out. Was a hell of a car and I still miss it to this day. I got rid of it to get a 2019 Mazda6 Signature.
I have a pretty simular setup except its a black 2016 with a manual with a tune, borla exhaust, intake and lowering springs with around 205 hp, for me its been great so far.

bought my '07 for a little over a week and like it. Only have 96K miles on it
tangel476 wow. Mine had 142k on it. I’m pushing 155k now
@@geegergwisley7977 automatic or manual transmissiion:?
tangel476 sadly an auto but the trans is in great shape. It’s got the 2.3
Brillant and thoughtful review.
Quite literally sitting in a dealership getting one of these because of this video. Great job
Great review! I own a POC 2015 mazda 3 iGT. Same amount of mileage as you! I love it!
How did you put the apple car play or android auto.. Kinda don't wanna pay mazda to do it
This guy is a good future TFL reviewer
This guy sure can review a car! Great job
Great job on the review and nice Camera Work :)
It's pretty quick with manual and I feel like I have total control of the car
i have a 07 mazda3. i'm so happy with this car. in few year i want to change to 3rd generation of mazda3. really nice car. rear lag room is bit shame.
Great review! Looking forward to seeing more from this new reviewer!
( but that's a local issue here, I know )
This '3' as shown here, (owned by Case) has the right color to attract and add to it's looks, it is too bad it's not equipped with a manual transmission,.....but that 2.5 engine is apparently, bullet proof.
Do you think the mazda 3 is a good manual car?
@@therequisking7454 Yes it is. Especially the 2.5 liter version. Lots of fun!
Beautiful review. I love the fart noises it makes. I am in between the 6 speed manual or 6spd auto. I have been looking at this gen for a few weeks as I will be using it as my daily. Retiring a high mileage Yaris and ready for something a little more fun.
Those wheels, so much nicer than the standard 18s. The black trim was standard on a special edition sport black in the UK.
What kind of paint did you use on your engine cover?
Looks 👌
You should talk Kase into joining 3rd Gen Mazda3 Owners on Facebook. A lot of people in there would enjoy seeing his car. This video has been shared in the group twice that I have seen. Also, I have a 2016 with 94,000 miles and I still love it haha
Awesome review I would watch you anytime. TFL make him a regular!
1:25 ??? I got a manual with the 2.5. Was that not available in '14?
Looking at a 2014 6 speed manual. This was a great intro to the car. Nice job!
I want a Mazda hatch. It's called the 5. I would also like a 3, with a trunk. I appreciate the review!
Wow Kase did a amazing job i can see him doing car reviews and testing for many years in the future. Hope to see more of him in front of the camera and i have to say do like the mods that were done to the car maybe not the tail lights but other than that great stuff.
lovely content
Great review and camera man
I have a Mazda 3 2010 manual almost at 200k I was considering if mine dies should I look into the Mazda 3 2014 or 2015 GT , what are your thoughts about the Mazda 6
We need another update on your car. Did you get the new mazda 3 turbo?
I upgraded from a 2010 sentra 2.0 to a 2015 hatchback 2.0...... >40hp greater with 5 more mpg....seriously this is REALLY insane
Very detailed and clear review
I have a 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2.5 and a manual. Currently just below 80k miles and still going strong. What lowering springs/kit did you use?
Excellent job, excellent review!
Get this kid on the main channel doing reviews!
I really wanted whatever gen the 3 was in 2004.. Wanted the speed3 soo bad, I loved that design.
1st. Had a 2005 base model loved it.
A good review. Only thing that surprises me is the black instead of body colored outside mirrors. Did I miss something, like they were part of the aero package or did the car always look like that?
I got mirror caps for a black Mazda3
Well done, well done. Good luck kid! You have great potential. Nice ride of course.
Kid has talent and voice appeal. Should use him more. He would be good with the luxury cars IMHO.
Damn, I wasnt the only one who noticed lol...good comments.
Have the 2016 2lire astina auto at 75000km. What size tires are you using and have you changed the transmission fluid? Would you add a oil catchcan?
I like this older body style better than the new generation body style.
have the cool air intake and cat back exhaust made a noticeable increase in power when installed together?
Not a huge power bump but its noticeably more responsive
How did you keep your exterior spotless? I bought the car used with less than 50k miles on it and it’s covered in scratches
U gotta buff it once in a while and every time u wash it add some wax spray
Wait the 2014 model has carplay? Is that from factory?
do you happen to have the name of those wheels ? they look great tbh..
that loudness is the most annoying thing about the 14-15 yr models. After that the 16+ are amazing much more
quiet
My only complaint about my 2014 Mazda 3. The Bose makes up for it though.
He has done it really well for a 1st time review. But I got 1 question, he looks really young. And he says he bought it 6 years ago, how old was he back then? And my God how old is he now?
Does is cost extra to add the CarPlay or is it in all of them?
