Scotty Kilmer My wife has a Mazda CX five 2018 and for some reason when you started up it makes a weird creaking noise like he barely wants to start I don’t know if it’s a fuel pump filter I don’t know but for 2018 Kia is shouldn’t be doing that and the brakes are ridiculous you pretty much go to press the pedal to the floor to get any break out of it I told her this is the worst car of ever been in
I owned a Mazda 3 and it was pretty shitty. In the end, its proneness to rust like hell took out the steering rack--a $2400 repair, which was worth more than the car itself (which had rusted to hell). The engine was fine, but the braking and suspension system was always having problems. In the end, the car died with 142,000 km on the clock, which is pretty pathetic. I've had a Subaru Legacy for 3 years now and the only thing that's gone wrong with it is the volume button on the steering wheel won't work. That said, I've gotten paranoid about the CVT going thanks to Scotty's videos and some other sources, and maybe the head gasket, though that SEEMS to have been corrected (it's a 2010).
Daniel Pawtowski I just purchased a low miles 2003 Protege ES. Its fun to drive. So far I'm replacing rubber items like suspension bushings and motor mounts, but its dry here in desert. Rubber dries here.
Like scotty I would buy a Toyota any time without question. I had a Vibe/Matrix that lasted for over 15 years without even one problem ever. Now I absolutely would buy almost any Mazda with a manual gearbox. I might even buy a manual Subaru. But I would not expect the Subaru to last and although the Mazda would outlast the Subaru I don't think either would outlast my carolla. The biggest difference in most manufacturers just like scotty says are auto transmissions. My brother was a loyal Honda customer for decades. Honda started putting crappy autos in their cars. He had 2 civics, 2 accords, and a odyssey.... all of them broke. He's gone Toyota too. They just last. They're boring.... but they last.
Hondas are for kids who like loud tinker toys, or people who like boring cars but are reliable. They aren't "better," unless you like pep boys mufflers, vaping, and carpooling to your cubical 9-5 job, and occasional Mumford and Sons concerts, and to Starbucks to drink Pumpkin Spice lattes and study on the same macbook everyone else has.
I’ve been towing for almost 3 years, I can count how many Mazda’s I’ve towed with one hand. Subaru’s lol.......take the Mazda, I’ve towed Subaru’s with holes in their engines more than once, timing chain seized up, transmission failure on the first generation crosstreks etc
Aashish Bharadwaj -valid point but I work in the Bay Area, home to the biggest Mazda dealerships in California. Go on Mazda’s gold cup dealership awards for the dealerships who sell the most(San Jose, Dublin, concord) . Yes Subaru still out sells them by a high margin but when have you heard of a Mazda with a blown piston? Timing chasing messing up after 70k miles (mid 2000’s models)
magna116 You took it from “which gets towed more? The popular BRAND Mazda, or the popular BRAND Subaru? And condescend to the people above by breaking it down to a much more specific “well by that logic the 72 pantara is the best car ever built then” Ok? That’s not actually observing the two popular brands like all the people above were actually talking about, but ok, I see how you were able to condescend there....
We had a 2011 Mazda 3 and it never had any problems whatsoever all we had to do is replace bettery and oil regularly. Mazda is a very reliable company and their interiors in the new cars are actually really nice
I’ve owned 6 Mazda’s through out my driving lifetime and I gotta admit there pretty bullet proof cars and I wouldn’t bother buying another car brand there built tough parts are easy to get too and it’s a reliable car
@@ethanchad3175 Lucky I had a Subaru 2005 WRX model built in Japan. Engine oil leaks, eletronic module issues, rattling engine sounds, oil consumption, expensive parts, understeer on corners etc, etc. Subaru never again.
JohnsRadios Subaru is known to have some of the best reliability of quality there is a Japanese Japanese cars run better I don't know where is getting us to be good around talk to your local mechanics
Scotty would suggest you not to buy the Subaru BRZ as it will leave you stranded on the side of the road, but instead buy the Toyota 86 as those things are bullet proof
Scotty Kilmer's videos comment sections are one of the best comment sections in all TH-cam. Almost no trolls or haters, just information enthusiasts and real life car owners.
2012+ skyactiv engines are the cream of the crop. I’ve had no issues in my wife’s since we bought her 12’ new, now it has 167,000 miles and not one issue!
Be Me: Owns a Subaru WRX and sees Scotty make another Subaru video. *sweats* Oh it's just a comparison video its gotta be Subaru that wins Scotty: Mazda is better than the Subaru in every way F
EGC YT Also funny that my father is retired mechanic from completely other side of the world but still sounds just like Scotty (with lot less yelling though) and has only owned Toyotas for last 35 years :D
I own a Japanese built '14 Mazda3 no problems to report, I frankly love how intuitive the trans is in spirited driving. I plan to keep it for at least another decade
@behexen250 as a tech what do you recommend I do as far as servicing (drain & replace fluid) the trans? I have the 6sp auto, about 57k miles. I have spoken to various dealer service departments in my area and they won't service it
Jatco transmission? Hold on there Scotty, according to what I know Mazda skyactiv 6AT is designed by Mazda and manufactured by Aisin. That's right, the beloved company that makes transmissions for Toyota and partly owned by them. Another nod to Mazda my man.
Yeah Mazda is doesn’t mail it in with the transmission. It’s my favorite part my Mazda3. It’s not a powerful car, but I can make some good moves with that manu-matic. I chose it over the Impreza because the CVT was just meh.
As a devoted manual transmission fan, big vote for the Mazda 3. Fun to drive, fantastic fuel economy. Most manuals far outlast most automatic transmissions. And hey, you get built in theft deterrence.
My experience with Subaru is and has been safety, reliablity, full-packet, goddamn good price for such good offroaders, (cool design, but only idiots talk about design in a discussion), ...
I have a 2016 Mazda CX5 with front wheel drive, got it two and a half years ago, and it has been fine up here in Canada. Has done two winters so far and no issues.
Raq yessir! I got a 3.0 v6 manual transmission of course. 133k miles (: love the car. 2 days ago I pressure washed the engine bay... killed a coil and spark plug from doing so, but replaced one of each and she’s back to golden. Also under the hood is clean af! (Don’t pressure wash the engine bay!!!)
I’ve owned a few toyotas, hondas and mazdas. Obviously the corollas and civics are great. I’ve been thoroughly surprised by my mazda 3 hatch. The main issues mazdas have is rust, my personal mazda hasn’t had that issue due to the fact that it was washed and undercoated regularly. Great little cars.
Hey now I bought a used 07 Mazda 3 with 144,000 miles and drove it for 150,000 more in the last 3 years. And haven’t had any majors repairs, and it’s never left me stranded or on the side of the road. I’ve never even jumped it off. Better than a Honda if I’m concerned.
Dear Scotty, I have a 2017 Mazda 6 with a Naturally Aspirated 2.5L SKYACTIV Inline 4. I love the car, it was build in Japan, and it shows. I bought the car because of the lower financing rates and my disappointment with my last Honda Civic (1.5 Turbo, it had oil dilution really bad, which makes sense as a Canadian that lives in one of the coldest places in the world come winter time) I also bought them because when I was doing autobody administration we had a few customers with high mileage Mazda CX-5s with the same motor as my Mazda 6, they ran great! They were at about 400,000 Kms (or just under 250,000 miles) and they sounded like new, the motors ran great, the electronics all work, there wasn't much wear on the interior. I asked them how reliable they have been, and aside from doing brakes a bit early, only scheduled routine maintenance. No transmission issues, but they don't tow much and their older so they likely don't drive aggressively. I have no issues with mine ether, but I drive lightly for better fuel efficiency. They've come a long way since their Ford-Owned, rust bucket days!
I got 2015 Mazda 3 built in Mexico and it's doing fine 106k miles later. Has the 2.0L Skyactiv. No rattles or anything odd. Still runs and drives like new. Steering wheel leather is looking a bit smooth and shiny but other than that no noticeable wear. Just changed the spark plugs at 104k miles for the first time as well as front brake pads. Rear pads were changed at 44k. Spark plugs looked fantastic, especially for a car that opens the throttle plate wide open at light loads and intentionally runs lean.
Mazda's newer automatics are built in-house, although I think they're based on an earlier Aisin design. Some sources say it is an Aisin design, some say it was co-designed with Aisin, in any case not Jatco for sure. Specialist transmission websites and forums generally praise the reliability of the Skyactiv automatics, very few cases of failures.
I own a 2007 Mazda 3 with 266 000 km and it is hands down the best car I have ever owned! It has never broken down (knock on wood) and I have only had to replace consumables
Damn right, my dad drives a subaru and my mom drives a mazda. They’re perfectly reliable cars. Only problem with my moms car was the A/C got clogged 2 times, and the exhaust recently started leaking- isnt that normal for an almost 10 year old car? Its still going strong, at about 65k miles!
I totally agree Scotty, my wife and I have had 6 new Mazda's since 1996 and never have had any serious problems; 3 of the Mazda's were manual and 3 were automatics
I think there is a severe difference between the CX5 and the 6-series. CX5 is built in Mexico and 6-series is still still beeing built in Japan. And after the Ford period it seems that the quality is getting much better. Hope they overcompensate for that.
My brother has one for 10 years - falling apart - costs several thousand every garage visit. 127000 miles. Maybe you're not keeping them long enough lol
@@Ronaldo-nj9pi The Mazda 6 we bought in 2003 is still running strong, my daughter started driving it last summer with 107K so we will keep our fingers crossed
I've lived on the same hill in Ohio (we get lots of snow) for years and can confirm that you just can't beat a Subaru on a snowy hill. By far the best vehicle we've owned for snowy travel. If everyone had one I wouldn't have to bother plowing my driveway in the winter.
I 100% agree with you.Take a look at toyota Yaris its simply a mazda, and that small car is very very reliable. there are bad cars out there but subaru, mazda, mitsubishi and nissan are great cars,Unless a person is very lazy at maintenance. These cars are great.
AnimaHaynes The problem when Scotty talks about Mazda is that half the time he confuses current Skyactiv Mazda’s with pre-Skyactiv Ford based Mazda’s. Mazda’s in-house designs like Skyactiv have been pretty reliable and innovative, which is reflected in Consumer Reports reliability.
I have Subaru everything. I got a 2002 outback with 200K miles, 2015 Forester Turbo, Subaru Legacy 2015 AND 2010 STI, and they function wonderful. Best AWD and fuel economy I have ever seen than in any car. Most I’ve had to do was literally change the tires to fit the seasons. Can your car drive up a 45 degrees snowy terrain???
I had the 2002 manual.... did good for a couple years w about 180k. Then here comes the head gasket issue. I sold it for a good price even w that issue.
Who cares peter. I had a shitty Subaru WRX that had a new problem every week. Oil leaks, electrical module issues, rattling engine, you name it. Subaru never again
@danbau08 Yeah I read that in the 2004 models and newer they fixed the head gasket issue. I cannot speak to the newer models but I have been very satisfied with mine.
You are right as rain Scotty, Subaru has been having quality issues of late, explosive growth that they can't handle.Mazda is a quality car and its fun to drive, owned two, a mazda 3 stick shift, only thing replaced was struts a wear out item and a mazda cx7 101000 miles still going, only thing replaced was oil!
Only use prem gas. Aluminum engine cant take heat/predetonation. Only use the suby coolant at the dealership. I have 218000 on mine and engine is perfect. Easy car to work on, Kinda hard to find parts for.
If you are even slightly unsure of timing belt/water pump get it done. Rem to have them reseal oil pump when they do it. You may want to replace radiator and thermostat as they are cheap and easy repairsl
@@leonardoheras7223 also baby it. A heavy foot will blow seals and gaskets easier. Same for all cars but doubly so for older subarus. The cam seals, rear main seal, oil pump o-ring all have a tendency to go; as well as of course - the head gaskets. Less RPM = less pressure = longer seal+gasket life. It probably lasted that long because the owner did maintenance and was easy on it.
@@DanielSolis33 | I don't think the 3 would get the RWD as it would drive the costs way more up. My guess is that the 6 would get a RWD. If not, Mazda would make a GT 4 door car, almost similar to the Kia Stinger and make that an RWD I6. Maybe after the RWD I6 platform comes out, they might base an SUV out of it.
Mazda is also coming out with its first electric vehicle next year and then in 2021 will start producing EV and hybrids with Toyota in Huntsville, Alabama!
Nobody: Random people in youtube comments: i have a subaru wrx 999,999 trouble free miles, original engine and trans, and brakes. just regular maintenance, who needs a bOriNg tOyoTA?
Was thinking of getting a 3 but every one I looked at had the same rust spot on front of rear wheel well, so I started looking at them at stop lights, same rusted out spot
They are well known for their 2000-2010 cars corroding very fast. Mazda 6 is the first car that comes to mind for many when you think about rust. Newer ones are better in this regard, but in many cases the body is still not protected with zinc coating, which is the greatest protection in general.
@@TheBlobik Not sure about that. I have a nearly 14 year old 6 - 2006 model - with no rust on it. Underside is very clean, too. I'm in England, so a damp climate/salt on the roads in winter, etc. Uses no oil/water and has been bulletproof. Good to drive, spacious and not bad for gas mileage. I may have been lucky, of course.
Laurie Harper same, although he is right about rust. Where the trunk opens it rusted and chips. I just filled them in with fresh paint. Kinda surprising considering I live in Tennessee and he climate isn’t snow and it should be in good condition. Still reliable though.
@@TheBlobik I have a 2007 which in winter are roads are heavily salted & live in a area that is dump half the year & very near to ocean. I have a tiny bit of rust just starting at back wheel weel. Other brands of cars are far worse than mine & way newer as well.
@@rafaelrodriguezb haha your right! .. I needed a new water pump at 120k. Been there done that. I just had the radiator fail the other day. But other than maintenance stuff skocks, suspension, tires etc. That's pretty good in my book. When I was young my family and I owned American cars and they broke me. Got tired of throwing my money away. I'm still ahead of the game and have a good looking rust free everything works fully loaded car, with no payments for 5 years now. That's epic.
Bought my '08 Mazda3 brand new, hardly any problems in the last 12 years. Mostly Ford parts, but still... I guess it was a test case design for the Ford Focus in Japan. Even crunched the front end in an accident ( rebuilt myself) she's still running strong, almost as good gas mileage as when I bought it. 175k miles!
Since 2012 Mazda has been made almost as well as Toyota!! And consumer reports rates them about the same in reliability. In fact with the new skyactive x engine, Toyota and Mazda are building a factory together to benefit both companies.
Ryan Heisler - Which is almost Nill, in a Miata!! 🏎 🇯🇵 meanwhile Porsche 🇩🇪 parts & labor; and repair times ⏰ are -- jaw-dropping-ly huge! Like deez Nutz!! 🥜 JK. 🤣
I have a 2010 Mazda 5 180000 miles. no major problems but twice the transmission did go into limp mode. The fluid was dirty, I changed it and the screen, no more problems since. The dealer did a flush the fist time, not a fan of flush. Tires, struts and shocks are my failures.
I’ve owned 7 different Mazda’s, various models. I currently drive one that is 16 years old. I change the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. I have never had to do a major repair on any of them. Is there a better testimony for what I believe is one of the best car lines being produced today?
Mazda with manual >> any toyota/honda even built. Mazda AT are a different ballgame. Too many people don't change the tranny fluid on their Mazda ATs and they break down all the time.
ok but dont tell me it s not rusty , here were i live mazda car from the 2000 and early 2010 to mid 2010 were starting to rust wihtin a year..so you had a good but bad looking car in a matter of time ^^
My sister had 2005 Mazda 3 until last year. No problems other than usual brakes and stuff. Mechanic did replace water pump but more so as a precaution. She gave it to my nephew his first car. He has beat the crap out of it has only changed the oil once an its still going. He did have to replace the front shocks but the car is approaching 200K and still runs fine.
Hasn’t Subaru built all their CVT transmissions in-house since 2014? So saying Jatco builds them isn’t very accurate. Also, Subaru did have a problem with head gaskets blowing, but those were early 2010s. The head gasket thing was fixed and hasn’t been an issue for Subaru in any of their models in years. Unless you’re buying a used one from the affected model years, why continue bringing this up? Trying to use a problem from over five years ago that’s since been fixed to try to criticize a brand isn’t very honest.
The biggest problem was that the gasket was single layer coated with a thin layer of carbon, That wore off and then the gasket would leak. They fixed the problem with a Multi layer gasket. It affected models were Impreza, Lagacy and Outback between 1999 and 2004. Later on a gasket or seal would start to leak on the oil filter, which was much easier to fix. I hear lots of people talk about the head gasket problem but they never mention the year or car and they don't acknowledge that it was ages ago and was fixed. The real problem was how Subaru addressed the problem which wasn't very business like and very anti-customer friendly. My brother has a 2009 Legacy and with regular servicing the thing is brilliant. I'm soon to purchase the new Forester. I have no problems with the brand.
flick22601 - Mazda outsells Subaru 3 to 1 in Europe 🤷🏻♂️ and everyone KNOWS Europe has mountains and snow ❄️. 4wd and AWD are more readily available there by Mazda Europe vs USA however
I bought a cx-5 new in 2013. This is the version with the 2.0 4cyl Skyactiv engine. I've had zero issues. The worst part of the design is the direct injection causes carbon to quickly build up on the valves. My valves started ticking around 99.000 miles. Valve cleaning fixed it. The best part is that it's very easy to work on. Most everything is super easy to access unlike many modern cars. I've done all maintenance myself (oil, brakes, transmission, coolant) -all very easy to service! I would definitely consider buying another Mazda.
@@noelaguirre7104 cleaning the valves requires removing intake manifold. I used a chemical treatment along with small wire brush. Cost me about $30 in chemicals and a few hours on a Saturday.
There's reasons, why I like Mazda more than Subaru. Now I made a great decision. Thank You Scotty. Btw, if anybody is curious about the car makes I prefer the best is #1 Toyota, #2 Mazda, and #3 Subaru. I see those as the top most reliable car makes ever made.
This guy has no idea what he is talking about....I have owned 5 Mazdas owning one with 220k miles on it. All have been extremely reliable. Not to mention I have been a service advisor for over 10 years so trust me I have seen everything and dealt with tens of thousands of cars and their issues.
Yeah they did have an issue with some models but so did the " never a problem Toyotas" ...tacoma tundra and Sequoia. My friend that is an advisor there is still doing frames under warranty for Toyota for rust. My other friends at Mazda have no such issue currently. When I worked at Honda there was also a lot of cars with rust issues on fenders etc. Must be a Japanese issue. Currently working at JLR for 8 years I recalled 0 cars for any rust issues. JLR deff better than Toyota for rust reliability 😂
@@rafaelrodriguezb no it's not lol. In 2001 Mazda designed the dohc 2.3 liter 4 cyl In the Ranger but before that all 3 motors were ford designed, the 5 speed man trans were mazdas
@@trevagraham1605 Correct. I think they called it the "lima" engine. It's been a wonderful motor and went through several modifications but essentially the same. The last one was the 2.5 which I have and other than replacing the timing belt every 75 to 100 thousand miles I've done almost nothing to it. I changed the spark plugs at 114 thousand and of course change oil on schedule but other than that it runs flawlessly. This is my second one and I love them. Mine has about 168,000 on it and runs perfect. My daughter ran one like it to 275,000 and never did anything major to it. Still ran perfect and she finally sold it.
Ha I had one too! My dad gave it to me. It was a beater, but the little thing would not die! It leaked oil, and had no heat, but the thing just kept going and going. Great gas mileage too. I miss the days of putting $20 of gas to last me all week! Now $20 will barely get me a quarter tank of gas in my new tundra Haha. I don't care though!
Right I guess those class action lawsuits currently against Subaru for faulty headgaskets and excessive oil burning are from owners lack of maintenance 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I've owned Honda, Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda cars over the years and when I was younger I considered Honda to be the top brand but over the years I have started to shift my preference towards Mazda, it's a brand that you really don't think about but once you drive one, you finally realize the quality and driver-friendly nature it has, they are simply the best in terms of driving ergonomics, very comfortable to drive yet exciting at the same time due to its sporty nature. The only nitpick I have is that Mazda does not have a luxury division, so the one I'm currently driving is likely my last Mazda because I'm ready to step it up to the luxury tier, but I think Mazda is a brand that any person should experience while young, it's simply a very satisfying ride for the price.
Scotty, I have worked with Mazda engineers many times and have been to one of their factories in Hiroshima. MAZDA DOES NOT USE JATCO TRANSMISSIONS!!! They use Aisin transmissions, THE SAME supplier that your beloved Toyota use! CHECK YOUR FACTS before spreading bulls***
Hey Scotty !!! 96 subaru Outback 199 thousand miles, auto transmission live in Florida bought it brand new . No problems what so ever running strong and running great . just regular maint. and oil changes......
I totally agree. I had both and the Mazda lasted twice as long as the Subaru and I'm not a very demanding driver. My Mazda 3 was probably the best 4 cylinder car I ever owned. Of course, I had the 5 speed manual version and not the automatic.
Hey Scotty and everyone else, I had to tell ya My kid restored a van I had sitting for 15 months for mother's day! It is so nice, he even put new tires new lights nice engine shinny clean gosh so great never has anyone ever done that for me. I cried.
I’m pretty sure Mazda still uses traditional automatic transmissions, not CVTs like Subaru. But Mazda makes very good manual transmissions, so I’d go with that
I bought a 2004 Mazda Protege brand new that was the best car I’ve ever had with the least amount of problems in 224k miles or beating it up delivering food and taking road trips across the country. Only replaced 2 batteries, a wheel bearing, drivers seat, and a couple engine mounts, thermostat, and engine fans in 224k miles. Everything else was original besides wear items like belts and brakes.
Subaru's reliability is actually pretty great. My 2011 Subaru outback has 130k miles and has had 0 problems. There's a reason they are ranked 4th on that reliability list only 1 spot away from a toyota product.
I'm considering a Subaru for my next car. Scotty may want ti an update to this video according to my research they don't really have the head gasket issues anymore. And I don't think there's anything wrong with an outdated engine design if it works and they fix the problematic areas. And I've also read that Subaru has changed over to timing chains instead of belts a few years ago.
I dont know buddy but I gotta say , I love your stuff but I've had a 2007 Mazda 3 and it had 300k miles and ran perfect until my daughter totalled it. Only thing I had ever did to it was the motor mounts and the TCM , it would still be running now if it was in my hands.
I purchased a 2006 Mazda 3 and drove from new to 310,000 KM with original clutch and transmission. I never had any issues mechanically, just the typical rust issue.
Same here. I've had an '06 mazda 3, '07 speed 3, '12 mazda 3, and now a '19 mazda 3. Bulletproof cars that only require regular maintenance. That's why they offer unlimited kilometer powertrain warranty.
0bsolete-X that’s so true. I’ve been looking at used cars and found a 2016 Mazda 6 with 50,000 miles on it for $8,500 The Accords and Camrys with the same year and mileage were about $5,000 more which is a shame because I wanted and Accord but it looks like I might have to go with the Mazda
Mazda does not give big incentives. Mazda has been making awd since the 90s. 😉 323 awd. Mazdaspeed6 awd cx5 awd cx9 awd. Mazda also has timing chain in their skyactiv engines. If you can get a manual. Also, a mazda is a car enthusiast car. CHANGE YOUR OIL never use nothing but the oil weight appointed for it...and DO NOT put additives in it. Make sure u keep the ailment on them on point! Also watch country code. If you want one with the better brake pads etc make sure the vin starts with a J not a number.
Mine is going on 13 yrs & never had a problem with it. Oh & has a tiny bit of rust on back driver side wheel well. So people thinking they rust out easy not so. Many cars in my area that are 7 yrs old have twice the rust my almost 13 yr old car has.
@@basshead. funny... i had an 04 mazda 6s without one drop of rust on it in the north east.... oh yeah i didn't drive it in the snow. imagine that. must be that liquid salt.
He isn't referring to the standard Mazda skyactiv automatic transmissions . Most all CVT transmissions used by several manufacturers including Mazda are made by Jatco.
@@jonadam5392 I was not aware that Mazda had any cars with CVTs. (Not counting hybrids which use extremely robust planetary gear PSDs, not belt drive glass transmissions).
@@jonadam5392 mazda doesn't have any model with a CVT transmission and they diss CVTs quite a lot. My 2009 Mazda6 uses Aisin transmission which is a Toyota-owned brand. The SkyActive one is said to be Mazda-developed transmission.
I really wish Scotty would do some research before saying things. Yes, Mazda uses Aisin transmissions. The same supplier that Toyota uses. I have worked with Mazda engineers and have visited their Hiroshima factory and can 100% confirm they use Aisin
My daughter's 2013 Skyactive just turned 100k miles and has been perfect. The engine is quiet as a church mouse and tranny shifts smooth as butter. Scotty is typical Toyota fanboy with blinders on.

Owned a Mazda 3 for years. Bullet proof car runs great. It’s all about maintenance.
I've owned a Mazda Protege for 18 years. Has never had any failure of any kind. At all.
Nothing to brag about owing a car for only 3 years.

Dear Scotty,
I have a 2017 Mazda 6 with a Naturally Aspirated 2.5L SKYACTIV Inline 4. I love the car, it was build in Japan, and it shows.
I bought the car because of the lower financing rates and my disappointment with my last Honda Civic (1.5 Turbo, it had oil dilution really bad, which makes sense as a Canadian that lives in one of the coldest places in the world come winter time)
I also bought them because when I was doing autobody administration we had a few customers with high mileage Mazda CX-5s with the same motor as my Mazda 6, they ran great!
@@kloroformd That's great! They really have turned around since they became independent again and started making SKYACTIV vehicles.
Mazda's newer automatics are built in-house, although I think they're based on an earlier Aisin design.
They are definitely underrated.
Thank you
I drive a 2005 mazda 3, 5 speed manual with 229,000 and never had a problem with it.
Mazda with manual >> any toyota/honda even built. Mazda AT are a different ballgame. Too many people don't change the tranny fluid on their Mazda ATs and they break down all the time.
Very similar to what I have. 2004 Mazda 3, 5 speed manual with 216,000
Yeah Scotty goes crazy sometimes. Toyota products can last up to 500k miles sometimes, but 200k is enough for most people.
ok but dont tell me it s not rusty , here were i live mazda car from the 2000 and early 2010 to mid 2010 were starting to rust wihtin a year..so you had a good but bad looking car in a matter of time ^^
My sister had 2005 Mazda 3 until last year.
I guess he has to justify his dislike for the brand somehow .
@@IanSRutter I think another problem with those models were the catalytic converter, big night mare.

I've had Mazdas since 1991. I replaced a console fan once. Awesome cars.
I had a Mazda protege 2002 which was the best car I have ever owned.
Care to elaborate what the valve cleaning entails and total out of pocket expense?

They do rust like hell, though.

I have a 2001 Mazda 626 V6 with 180,000 miles. Just regular routine maintenance. Great Purchase.
I have Subaru Impreza 98 model. It has over 300.000 km on it and still drives perfectly fine. Thats why i love older Subaru.
My uncle has an '01 Forester! He takes care of it, so it never breaks down.
Have you seen the new Mazdas? The interiors in those are amazing and are basically luxuary cars for a fraction of the cost

Mazda transmissions are from Aisin (same as Toyota) not Jatco now...
I believe since Skyactiv came to the market, it is their own transmission and they build them at their transmission and engine factories.
Scotty is losing it lately. Age catches up...

@@MAGZIVE what year is it?, I believe from 2013-2014 onward is mazda's own.

Only replaced 2 batteries, a wheel bearing, drivers seat, and a couple engine mounts, thermostat, and engine fans in 224k miles. Everything else was original besides wear items like belts and brakes.
Scotty doesn't measure in 3-4 yrs. as proof. He sees many 20 year old Toyotas on the road and KNOWS the winner.
I would hope it would last 3 years without a problem
Subaru's reliability is actually pretty great. My 2011 Subaru outback has 130k miles and has had 0 problems. There's a reason they are ranked 4th on that reliability list only 1 spot away from a toyota product.
I'm considering a Subaru for my next car. Scotty may want ti an update to this video according to my research they don't really have the head gasket issues anymore. And I don't think there's anything wrong with an outdated engine design if it works and they fix the problematic areas.
