5 ปีที่แล้ว +20
That's right. It's the Mazda 2 in Japan. They partnered with Toyota to sell it here as the Yaris because they were scared the new 2 wouldn't sell. Like it's predecessor.
HAHA all the stop motion!! That was very well done honestly! Every new episode is a new way to laugh. This far along for the channel it's just impressive! (*edit spelling of 1 word)
I just got a 2013 Mazda CX-5. Imagine the same engine hauling around an extra 500lbs. It's an automatic, but it's not a CVT. Mazda uses a 6 speed automatic with fake manual shifting so you can access the torque that only exists in the first few gears without the computer fighting you for better gas mileage. I think the only reason it has that torque at all is because of the high compression ratio (which is what Skyactiv is all about). The good thing about the CX-5 is that it's probably the only SUV I've ever encountered that drives like a car. Mazda decided to forego all of the soft suspension and mushy steering responsiveness of a typical SUV so you can take a turn at more than ten miles per hour without feeling like you're going to roll over and die. It's basically a thicc hatchback that got a lift kit but didn't get the engine to compensate for its extra girth.
Skyactive is also about a seriously refined valve train that allows the engine to switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles to varying degrees. Otto cycle for acceleration and Atkinson cycle for excellent efficiency and engine longevity.
You're probably the only automotive journalist who doesn't like Mazdas. Everyone else waxes poetic about the transmission, handling, styling, etc. of the 3 but you pan it for the ECU. I've never driven a 3 but I've driven an iA, and I don't think you're very fair to that car either. I tested one and it is still one of my favorites. But hey, it's good to hear a dissenting opinion.
He's not the only one. The sales figures tell the tale; only autojournos rave about the Mazda3, for all of that, it hasn't moved the sales needle. If you need to spend real money on a car, this starts dropping off the top of the list.
He's always shitting on cars I like. I was highly triggered by his 300zx review and I'll never forgive him. Yet, I never miss one of his videos, so he's doing something right.
Fun fact, that RCR seems to have missed: mazda does not produce a cvt or even offer one in the lineup. It’s a standard torque converter auto... additionally the Scion iA, to which the 3 is compared is a Mazda 2. Do some research buddy.
It's not a matter of thinking you're too cool for a Corolla. It's the fact the Corolla isn't great and you can get other reliable cars that are better to drive, more efficient, or bigger. So why go with the Corolla other than being a Toyota fanboy?
What is also important - Toyota would have high resale value if you want to buy used due to their reputation. While reliable cars that don't have that sort of reputation will cost a lot cheaper on the used market.
Well either vast majority of reviewers world wide ( even German) are wrong or RCR team generally does not like Mazda brand, i suspect dislike based on a guilt by associaton, because both 3 and 2 are considered second to none in respectibe classes when it comes to handling and manuals. Actual review overall felt like a forced side show to RCR weird show

@@noredcr I've driven quite a few cars of different types and I've always found mine to be very peppy and fast in comparison. It's a 2.5L with 6 speed manual transmission. It's so much more fun to drive.
@ I have the 2.0 and the 6 speed and I do think there is a lot more difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 in performance than just the few extra hp. The 2.0 is like he said, very tame and well, commuter car like. I love the car and definitely recommend it but it really doesn't deserve the super sporty idea people seem to associate with it. I had a '12 Mazda 3. Drove it 80k before selling it for a larger family car. It taught me three things: 1. A slow commuter could be genuinely fun to drive, 2. An automatic transmission with manual shift could genuinely fun to operate, and 3. A Mazda could be more reliable and get better gas mileage than a Honda Accord. Should have gotten a 6.
To be fair, you're driving it with the base engine. The 187hp engine that came with the standard transmission in the next couple years makes noticeably more power. The 2020 comes with a 250hp turbo... but unfortunately, you can't get that with the manual.

Of course you aren’t going to accelerate quickly in 6th, but if you need power on the highway downshift to 3rd and it’ll pass with no issues.
Brings back memories... I had a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan automatic. A practical car with no torque is \the best description for it. Great commuter car with a little more edge in the aesthetic department than your typical Corolla or Civic. The automatic came with a "manual" mode in the +/- configuration via shift lever. It had no tachometer. That's one thing that really annoyed me. It reminds me of a simpler time... driving my girlfriend at the time around, blissfully young, pre-twenties. I wish I was nicer to the car. I was sharing it with my sister at the time and didn't realize some of my most memorable moments would happen with that very car.
About a year ago I shopped the Mazda 3 and 6, thinking I was going to get a "regular" car, wanted one with a manual(ended up in a 7 year old pickup that cost as much as a brand new 3 lol). IMO the 6 is the Mazda to get, drives EXACTLY like a 3, for better or worse. IE tossable chassis/good handling, kind of noisy, slick shifter, meh power, but you get a much bigger back seat, bigger trunk, a better looking dash/gauge package, and IMO its a better looking car. So if you're looking at a 3, go buy a 6, its basically a bigger, better version of the 3 for not much more $$$$
I completely agree. The 6 is a much nicer car than the 3, at least the 2014-2018 3s, not sure about the all new body style, and in many cases the 6 only costs $1-2 grand more than a comparably equipped 3 and there's only a marginal penalty in fuel efficiency. Unless you just have to have a hatchback the 6 is a way nicer car than the 3.
Meh. The manual Corolla has been dead. I test drove the civic, corolla and 3 hatch in 2014 and bought the 3 2.0L MT Hatch for a number of reasons. Mr. Regular really hates Mazda for some reason.. just go look at his Mazda 6 review lol.

I have a Speed3, so cant speak much about the non-turbo 3's. But i thought they were decent little cars. You should find a Speed3 soon, im curious what you'd say about it.
This channel is amazing! So on the Mazda 3, I have a tHeOrY: I think they overengineered the engines a bit, with their dual overhead cams and direct injection, expecting the JDM crowd to pour aftermarket upgrades into the platform. But they DID NOT, because of course not. They were never going to have the huge market saturation of Toyotas and Hondas, which is what allows such communities. BUT they have recently finally found a bit of an aftermarket niche... way too late of course, but it's there. People found out you CAN turbo and supercharge the Skyactiv engines, and discovered that the car is so overengineered that 50% increases in power makes the engine and drivetrain yawn and shrug their shoulders, like "whatever dude." These tiny communities are like those guys who tell you about some esoteric anime which is actually SO GOOD YOU NEED TO WATCH IT, and like maybe? but is it really worth the extra effort? (but i own one and love it and im one of those guys but at least i have self-recognition alright)
Those are the same exact technologies I had in my 2016 Ford Focus. I replaced it with a 2014 Mazda 3. Both had very reliable engines. Only I mistaked myself into the DCT with the Focus. But I made it work until the day I tragically totaled it. And Mazda's handling is superb.
Just totally left out the sporty suspension. I have a 2014 Mazda 3 hatch with the automatic and it cuts through turns like a hot knife through butter. Its even sportier than the 16 Focus I had. I didn't think it was possible. These things handle like a dream.

Real Talk, if you're shopping at the higher end of things, the top-of-the-line Mazda 3 from this era had WAY more safety and tech features than any of the other cars cross-shopped. It's fun to drive. It's pretty. It's my default recommendation these days.
Can confirm. I have a loaded 2018 Mazda 3 GT and I’m so fucking spoiled with all the features. The heads-up display is way cool.
Yeah I shopped the 2.5L touring version of this car against the Audi A3 and Mercedes A class back in 2014, not only was it clearly as nice and with more features, it was also cheaper. The other Japanese manufacturers weren’t even in the ballpark.
Still the case with the new Mazda 3. More features and cheaper than the A3, A-Class and 1-series.

This car comes with two different engines which wasn't touched on. Also the Toyota iA you mention is basically a Mazda2.
That's right. It's the Mazda 2 in Japan. They partnered with Toyota to sell it here as the Yaris because they were scared the new 2 wouldn't sell. Like it's predecessor.

Actual review overall felt like a forced side show to RCR weird show
I don't think they like Mazda. I remember a review he did of a Mazda 6 and it was something similar. I think he associates the brand with a dude he knew and that he really hated or something.
Actually this is a refreshing piss take on the Mazda3. Car reviewers raved about this generation but it sold lukewarmly across the board with the actual car buying public.
to be fair they always tout there cars as being sporty but there all turtle slow, yes they handle a little sportier than other econo box's but they aren't even remotely quick on there feet. maybe thats it?
@@noredcr I've driven quite a few cars of different types and I've always found mine to be very peppy and fast in comparison. It's a 2.5L with 6 speed manual transmission. It's so much more fun to drive.
@ I have the 2.0 and the 6 speed and I do think there is a lot more difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 in performance than just the few extra hp. The 2.0 is like he said, very tame and well, commuter car like. I love the car and definitely recommend it but it really doesn't deserve the super sporty idea people seem to associate with it. It drives about the same as my old Jetta and my 190, handles good but just very mild and tame. The 2.5 though in some ways feels completely different imo

An automatic transmission with manual shift could genuinely fun to operate, and 3. A Mazda could be more reliable and get better gas mileage than a Honda Accord. Should have gotten a 6.

The ECU with paper raffling and the russian in the end was epic, thank you
This whole time I thought Mazda's SkyActiv thing was just their marketing wank for "our car has a 4g hotspot in it"
😂😂😂 All about engine tech. When it first came out it was really cool. 13:1 compression ratio in a standard road car was crazy. Yet it was for efficiency, not power. Mazda has been doing some cool stuff either way.
Much different car with the 2.5 liter engine. The torque makes it easy to drive fast. Torque runs out around 4500-5K but if you don't wind it out too much, it goes like piss. At least by regular car standards.
I have a Speed3, so cant speak much about the non-turbo 3's. But i thought they were decent little cars. You should find a Speed3 soon, im curious what you'd say about it.
They did a speed 3

Yes. I was showering with my gf and and I was like: "Shit I'll quickly go to the loo. I'll be back in a sec." And she was like: "Pee in the shower. I won't mind." And my bladder was so full that it took more than a minute." My gf actually started laughing hysterically because she found it hilarious.
Sometimes I remind her of that and she just starts laughing and says: "There was so much pee. It just didn't stop.
Should've used my 2018 Grand Touring 6 speed manual with the 2.5L for more power and acceleration. It's quite peppy compared to the 2.0L.

I think the Mazda 3 hatchback it's a really pretty thing. And the car have independent rear suspension so it grips nicely the interior feels upscale
And they somehow managed to make the suspension even sportier than a Ford Focus. These things handle so sharp!
The outro songs just keep getting better and better. Thanks Roman
Mazda's are fun to drive, whereas Toyota's aren't unpleasant to drive. Big difference. And the 3 has the mannerisms of the Toyota iA because the Toyota iA IS rebadged a Mazda2.
Well, now I know which car I'm bringing to the RCR meet.
You absolutely nailed the throttle response. You really have to work with and anticipate what it wants to do. The confuser what being a box of 1's and 0's doesn't know if that stab on the gas is a drag race or trying to make an unprotected left. The 6 spd auto certainly is thrifty but 6th is definitely for cruising at 80 all day.
