I don't know what kind of corolla you have in the US, but I have been in a Corolla hatchback in Europe at 120mph and while it is certainly not as refined as a more premium vehicle, it is definitely stable and there is not much noise except for the wind
I've had my 2015 M3 GT for 2 years, I love it. I have the six speed manual and don't have any issues when i want to take off in a heartbeat. I dont take off like a rabbit all the time but if I need to it will move.
stupossibleify couldn't say, don't have chips or rust. The matte black plastic trim pieces on the outside have swirls of white on them because I was dumb...gotta pull off and paint. I had a rock crack the windshield but that's it.

I love my 2016 3sGT manual hatchback. To me, it's the best all around compact car available today. I think I would've also been very happy with a 2017 Civic turbo hatchback. It's the best styled and speced Civic in many years, but it wasn't available when I was shopping, still isn't.
When lease was up on our Mercedes C250 Coupe we replaced it with a loaded Mazda3 GT. Absolutely amazing. It drives like a BMW and sips fuel like a Prius. How can you miss? Grand-Slam out of the ballpark.
Re tires: running this car in sedan on 8x18 wheels and 215/45 eagle f1 asymmetric 3s - it's a joy to ride. Great braking, great handling, a bit worse fuel economy, the riding comfort is still kept there though, and the road noise pretty much gone. Overall I think this is very respectable and underrated car. I have to say that there seems to be no issue known to me with the Mexico-built cars. What I do know is that the next (4th) gen is built in Japan again, so, you can take that into consideration. + Great stability and handling, while retaining very respectable ride comfort. + Great looks, very ellegant, and because of being underrated, you don't see that many of them. + Naturally aspirated 2.0 is joy to ride. It's not fast, but it's more than enough. + The interior is really, really nice for the price point. It feels a class higher. The facelifted variant got rid of the fake carbon fiber, but introduced some extra crappy piano black... + Comes with Android auto support from 2016 - NOTE that applies only to the facelifted 2016+ variants, and has to be retro-fitted for about 200 bucks (new software, some hardware changes, labor). You can do it for free and also on pre-2016 cars, but you won't get powerful enough USB to charge the phone while using navigation, so, it's great that it can be done, but it has issues. + The stablity asssistents in this car actually work. I mean it. You feel them working when you go over the edge. At this point, it's aging and cheap car, but it works so well. + Normal manual controls for volume and AC. Knobs you can control the infotainment with fully while driving without ever touching the screen (the touchscreen is actually deactivated while driving as well, that's perhaps an overkill, but I am still glad they did it). / Note that the 2.0 came in 2 variants, 88kw and 121kw. The engine is the same, you can get 88kw safely chipped to about 118kw. It will make the engine deliver more power above 4k rpm. HOWEVER, the 88kw also came with longer gear ratios (you can reach 110kph in 2 and 160kph in 3). Longer ratios means worse acceleration and better economy. Take this info for what it's worth to you. / Mazdas used to have terrible reputation for rusting. The finish is still reputed to be a bit fragile, but I can say that so far, so good. I haven't seen this gen cars rusting so far, so, it means they solved it. Just note that the complaints from the gen 1 and gen 2 seem to no longer apply to this gen 3. - Does not offer liftback/combi. Hatch or sedan, that's it. - It's a very noisy cabin. You can hear the road noise unless you get quiet tires. At highway speeds, you can hear a lot of wind through the doors and windows. - The gauge cluster sucks my balls as well. - The cup holders are in a place where you will knock something down with your elbow, if you put a high cup or a bottle in. - The arm rest is fairly back and low, meaning it's not very usable for actual arm resting. Has a very nice cargo space though. - The USB ports are hidden in the arm rest. If you want to charge your phone, you need to get 1m cable which goes around the stick. - Some complain about way too light steering wheel. You get used to it and the car market is full of it, so, not sure if it's worth mentioning. - The dead pedal sucks, but you can get alumin(i)um dead pedal cover from the manufaturer fitted, optionally with alumin(i)um pedals as well. Not mentioning other possible aftermarket solutions. - I don't have the headsup display, but many complain about it's low quality/a lot of vibrations in it, making it hard to read. - For the size of the car, it lacks leg space in the back. For example Škoda Octavia has pretty much the same wheel distances, but it certainly at least feels bigger inside than this car does. - The infotainment is fine and can be customized in aftermarket ways, but at least by default there is noticeable delay between everything which is annoying. Again, nothing unheard of in the category and age, so, almost not worth mentioning.
Up in Canada we can only get a standard transmission with the GT, so feel lucky. Secondly, to solve your gripes its easy; Always have a microfibre cloth handy to wipe the interior and only microfibre as they don't scratch. Buy a new set of tires, preferably Michelins which I swear by. They'll make the car feel much better, enhance the performance and last much longer...guaranteed. My daily driver is an '05 Mazda3 GT 2.3 5spd, which I bought new. Fifteen years and 230k miles and she drives like new. Mind you I've had her oil sprayed yearly, kept regular maintenance, and had most of the suspension replaced around 170k. One of the best cars I've had.
Does anybody get how spoiled we are? My first car was a 1964 Rambler American. I had to fix its engine before I could even drive it. It was a POS. If I could have had a Mazda 3 back then I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven.
Haha, SO true! My first car was a 2-year old '74 Chevy Vega GT that was already rusting through around the windows (a So Cal car!) and a year into owning it the engine blew with 60,000 miles on it. I'd have been blown away by even the base model 2013 Mazda3!

Les Ordway - If commenting on the character of the car is your version of complaining, then your comments are outright bitchy by comparison. Quit being so sensitive, if the brakes squeal at warmer temps or the passenger-car gearing means it doesn't accelerate as fast as a sports-geared Miata then mentioning those characteristics isn't the same as complaining. So quit trying to conflate basic comments with complaints, especially when he obviously gave the upside of those characteristics (fun to drive in the cold, high MPGs, and the customizable infotainment system).
I drive an identical car (2014 Mazda 3i GT manual) and absolutely LOVE it. I traded in an '07 Mazda3s GT manual that had over 200k on it. At the time I bought the 2014, you couldn't get an 3s GT w/ manual transmission (think you can now). Overall this is a fair review but there are a few things in the review I personally disagree with. While it's no Porsche, the 2.0 has more get up and go than most people will need. It's considerably faster off the line than my '07 2.3. As he mentioned the power fades at higher RPM but a quick downshift is all that's needed for passing or climbing steep hills. I drive fast and the only time I've ever wanted more power has been driving through mountains. The handling is incrdedible in this car. Its a blast to drive on twisty roads or zipping through traffic. I cant say I noticed dramatic seasonal difference w/ the stock Yokahama and I got almost 50k miles out of them. As he mentioned, cargo area in the hatchback is good, like a small SUV. I can get my mountain bike in there w/o taking the front tire off. While I'd prefer a retractable cargo cover, I haven't had issue w/ the plastic one cutting me. I agree there needs to be a "dead pedal" for the left foot. The carpeting is fairly thin so shows wear quickly in that area. The rest of the interior is very high quality for this price range. The infotainment system has a learning curve but is much more intuitive than others I've seen. The control knob in the center console is very easy to use allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. The seats are a little narrow but are comfortable and have good lateral support. At 6'2" and 210# I've never complained about them. The bottom line for this car is value! It's high quality, reliable, economical and a blast to drive! If you're a driving enthusiast on a budget, you really can't beat it!

I have a used car dealership and got one of these for the first time a few years ago. I totally agree that these are a very underrated vehicle. I really like these now as well as the mazda 6. I Always try to buy one when they pop up at auctions. Good review sir.
i just bought a 2014 Mazda3 S GT hatch over the weekend, my first car purchase (I'm 24). It's a huge step up for me from family hand-me-downs, and I just love it...I guess I don't know enough about cars to not be impressed by the speed and handling. To me, the 2.5L accelerates quick, the tires really grip (maybe you shouldve gotten the 18's), the exterior in white and the leather interior are gorgeous, it's turned a grueling 1.5 hour work commute into something I (almost) look forward to
I have owned just two Mazdas in my life. The first was a 1994 323 Astina with a 5 speed manual. I was the second owner and the car was in flawless condition when I bought it. Everything on that car worked so well I was really impressed! I had no plans on getting rid of it, but some idiot ran a red light and shoved a Toyota SUV into me as I sat at the lights on the other side of the intersection, so that was the end of that. My worry was; how am I gonna replace that car with something similar, for a good price? A workmate told me about his Mom’s 2006 SP 23 5-speed manual, that she’d owned since new and was selling after buying a new car, so I took a look. The SP23 has a 2.3L engine and a bunch of extras on it and the price was just right, so I bought it and I’ve owned it since. It currently has 365,000kms (about 227k miles) on it and it’s going strong as ever. I look after it with regular oil changes and such, but I don’t exactly baby it either. I did have to replace the clutch at around 200k miles, but that’s not a big deal really. Also had a front suspension shock absorber bite the dust around the same time, so a pair of newbies there and that’s all I’ve had to spend in the last 7 years. This car is not perfect, but at least it doesn’t have any of those bloody annoying ‘helpful’ features like the hillstart assist you talk about. I will NEVER own a car like that, no matter what! I recently drove a 2023 Kia for a bit and the number of ‘Driver assist functions drove me crazy! I don’t need or want the car deciding that it needs to take over the steering or the braking whenever IT feels like I don't know what I’m doing! I drive the car, not the other way round. The car should just accpet the inputs that I decide to feed in and that should be that. This reliance on tech is dangerous IMHO. When I got my first drivers license (1972), you were not allowed to go for the test in an Automatic car and as far as I’m concerned, if you can't drive a stick, you can't drive, PERIOD! Clutch and accelerator control, especially on hill starts, is vital for learning how to apply power smoothly and safely in all kinds of situations, like icy roads, etc. Things like that give you a better understanding of how power is applied to the road by the drivetrain and you cannot truly get a feel for that if all you can drive is an automatic. It also makes you THINK more about what you’re actually doing, rather than allowing you to switch off your brain as you go down the road in a ton of steel and plastic. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, Mazda’s provide excellent value for money and I love mine. I’m old school too, I believe in the dictum; If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. (or replace it, in this case)
I find that with any car. I am car shopping and have been looking at mazda's but i've also looked at honda and toyotas. there is camps of loyal fans in all brands. go to any dedicated forums and its all the same.
First of all, thank you for creating such great content. You're by far my favourite "low budget" car reviewer on TH-cam. And I don't mean low budget as derogatory, I just don't want to compare your work with Jay Leno's or Top Gear. I hope your channel grows immensely and that you'll eventually get there. As a Mazda 3 owner (previous gen) I'd like to say the styling of these new gen are easily one of the best looking cars in the segment. The Kodo design translates so well that even the CX-5 being a crossover looks appealing. Do you think Mazda will use the new architecture of the new CX-9 on other models in the near future, so they can offer an improved driving experience for their customers?
My 2015 3 is really spot on with the Mazda brand. My only headache is the infotainment center and honestly I think it's just very picky and hates Iphones a lot. Getting map updates took some time to figure that one out since Tom Tom no longer provides services for gps. And the very intuitive controls are blocked if you have a drink in the cup holder. But I average 37 mpg with my manual 2.0 and I drive the snot out of my car.
your reasons not wanting this car is your own stupidity. Why are you sticking your head in that small trunk space to began with or cant you bend your head down little bit more. I never hit that board your talking about and the trunk is not alot, its actually quite small compared to Honda. Other than that, its a good car to drive on road trip and the tech it comes with standard is amazing given if you not in that need of trunk space rear seat leg room. I had zero mechanical issues with this car.

We solved the road noise by using quiet tyres as we progressively changed them. Best car we've had. Just love driving it. Great when driving steady, and really rises to fast driving.
I've owned and modified Honda's since 1995. The Mazda 3 is more Honda in nature than the new Civic is. I'll explain, the old school Honda's/Acura's were designed to be fun to drive even though they weren't fast. The view of the road and super responsive steering/handling is what made up for the lack of raw power. Honda knew that driver impression was the key to winning a segment as long as reliability or quality weren't sacrificed. Honda began to feel its cars weren't "grown-up" enough and since they weren't benefiting very much from the aftermarket they just blew-up their whole line-up and began to build "vanilla" boring vehicles. Mazda 3 is IMO designed with the driver impression in mind.
I know I'm 2 years late to the party, but you took the words right out of my mouth. Mazda is the last company keeping the N/A engine alive. Something I would have expected from Honda. When they dropped their quality at around 2005, Honda died for me. They are lightyears away from what made them so great. Now, Honda is just one manufacturer of many. It's Mazda being innovative and selling cars that feel better than they have any right to be.

I clean my 2015 Mazda 3 twice a month at the car wash. Looks like new each time. 92,000+ miles on it now with maintenance and it works like when I drove it off the lot.

savagegeese, you easily have the best car reviews out there. I just bought the 2017 Mazda 3 2.0L a few weeks ago and so far I am very happy with it. For the class, it has great steering input and a decent manual gearbox. It's not fast, but it is easy on the wallet and you won't lose your license when you run the piss out of it. The 2.5L would have been nice, but in Canada you have to go to the top trim level for that option.
I have a 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2.0 and automatic transmission. I drive it daily round trip almost 100 miles to work and back. The car is approaching 80,000 miles and I have had 0 problems with it. I intend on driving this car to the ground. The gas mileage is good and I have more than enough power to pass cars and merge on the highway. All of my commute is highway and I average about 75 or 80 miles an hour. I have no complaints at all. Plus the soul red with fresh wax on it is beautiful.
I had the 1990 Mazda Protege' and loved every second of it for 14 years. Traded in for the 2004 Mazda 3 and it's been everything that my Protege' was and still runs like a champ! You can always say you wish your car did this or had that..... I in my experience the 2 Mazda's I have owned, the mechanics and functions of the cars has been flawless and they were very responsive and fun to drive. I buy a car for reliability, and it's hard to find something this reliable in this price range... there's nothing better than never taking the car to the shop, having it paid off ( no more car payment ) and it still never gives you any grief for years..... that's vacation money!!! or money that just goes into savings!! My friends and family are always buying and trading and complaining about trips to the dealership for repairs.... none of them have ever owned a Mazda. Oh, and mine gets dirty too... amazing what a microfiber towel will do.
I watch most of your reviews and appreciate the critiques of the car's interior. However (and I am not being sarcastic), could most of the complaints/issues be resolved with a good interior detailing and installation of an after-market dead-pedal cover?
I bought outright (no financing) a brand new 2018 Mazda 3 2.5 liter Touring Hatchback with the Premium Package on 2/14/19 for $20,400 and couldn't ask anymore from the car for the money. I LOVE IT - FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!!!
Funny... 15 years ago next month, I went to a Mercedes dealer with cash in hand to buy a new C-class "starter Benz." The salesman was a bit of a jerk, telling me what I wanted on my new car and reneging on our previously agree-to price. After a couple hours of discussion, I left. A few months later, I found a Protege5, the precursor to the Mazda 3 hatchback. I fell in love and bought it outright for half of what the Benz would have cost me. I still have the Protege5, and it's still a blast to drive and reliable A.F. Every time I see one of those C-class Benz, I literally say to myself "There for the grace of God go I."
I had the opposite experience. Back in 2015 I was cross-shopping a C class with the Mazda6. The Mazda dealership was a total trainwreck. The showroom was small and the salesman showed no interest in showing me the car, features, or anything else for the matter. I asked for a test drive and he basically ignored me. Went to the Benz dealership down the street and was able to test drive the car easily with no pressure to buy. Guess which one I bought at the end.
Well, we don't complain about the 2.0L petrol here in Europe. Actually, this is considered a big engine in Europe. It's not a race car. It's a normal car that looks and drives fantastic. Always a pleasure to drive it!
I love how the piano gloss plastic is the first thing that he criticizes because it accumulates dirt and crap...you know that happens to *everything* when you don't clean it right? :S

Getting pretty mixed messages from this video, and as some others have said some form of structure would have been nice. An informative, real world opinion of the car nonetheless. A lot of the things you mentioned (apart from hill start assist) could easily be resolved with long term ownership - for example the tires. It seems like you're nitpicking at things that can be changed to personal preferences, and the ending message - that you liked the car and would buy it again - sounds hollow when paired up with everything else you mentioned.
Wild and Crazy kids, absolutely the ps3 are amazing tires, the new ps4 that came out are just stellar too, better than pilot super sports at a much lower cost theres no reason not to get them. I recommend trying the ps4 if you can they grip like nobodys business!
You asked the dealer if they could turn off the hill assist, if a new Mazda has cylinder deactivation can a dealer turn that off? If a car has start stop technology, I want that turned off also. I just turned 254K on my 2010 Mazda 6 this morning. Great car.
I was just about to ask if you've installed the Android Auto mod on yours when you mentioned the hackability of MazdaConnect. I installed it on my ND a while back and it works flawlessly, love it.
All my life i have owned nothing but mazdas for my daily driver. Why you ask??? Many years ago my mom bought a yellow mazda as her first car. It was a mazda 808 2 door. The car was a work horse and always provided trouble free service. Flash foward in time since my mom enjoyed her car so much i ended up buying mazda glc 323 and 3 mazda 3's over my lifetime. Also owned other cars yet my daily driver always had a mazda in the driveway. Most underated vehicle and best value for the price....zoom zoom.

I love my Mazda3 too. It's such an amazing car. I have the AWD JDM model though. For the hill assist - you can turn it off very easily using Forscan. This Mazda3 made me fall in love with the company. And like you, if they release a turbo version, I will buy it
I think a lot of the divergence of opinions in these comments is a matter of experience relative to expectations. If you're expecting a 2.0L Mazda 3 to be a BMW M3/M4 but cheaper, you will be disappointed. If you're expecting the Mazda 3 to be a Civic/Corolla-class compact sedan/hatchback with a bit of Miata spirit in it, then you might be pleased with it. I am in the latter camp, and I'm extremely fond of my 2016 J-VIN 2.0L 6MT sedan (in Soul Red). I would note that, in my shopping/purchasing experience, there was significantly more individual difference between the Mazda 3s I test drove than most other cars I've sampled. The one I ultimately purchased seemed to be (and still is) a much more engaging car than others I tested. Perhaps large car-to-car variation explains some of the differing experiences owners report here.

I put 130k on my Mazda3. Picking up a Brand New 2.5 Touring Hatchback tomorrow, I would recommend Mazda products to anyone. They're not the fastest, not the quickest, not the most luxurious, but when you add all the goods with all the bads, they're just the most well made quality fun driving machines out there, and under $22k! Can't beat it!

I took my sGT to the track and was......impressed with what the car could do with it's power to weight ratio. It was not a DC5 k20z1 , I was entertained by the paddle shifters and was really trying to break the car loose. The suspension geometry is really engineered well. I walked away from the track day knowing I could throw this car into a situation and come out alive and well. The sGT does have the big tach dial and needle with digital speedo.
Need the 2.5L man.... that's all. It's so easy to chirp the tires (you do it without even trying in the 2.5L). Trust me, I've been pulled over for it without even trying.
I have a 2015 S Touring Manual hatchback and the driving experience and powertrain have been generally great (knock on wood). However I've been a bit disappointed with the quality of the car's components, and mine's the Japanese-made one: - Leather steering wheel is starting to tear - Driver door lock has failed 3x and the 4th lock is buzzing again too - Both front door Bose speakers have blown due to a design flaw where water leaks from the windows outside down into the unprotected speakers which corrodes them prematurely. - Headlights have condensation trapped in them - Creaky front suspension is starting to develop - Cabin air filter has been changed three times due to musty smell - Major orange peel in the finish and thin paint in general... lots of mini rock chips All at just under 50,000 miles! And I'm the type of person to park at the back of every parkinglot, handwash or touchless carwashes weekly, no food in the car, avoid potholes like the plague... So although the drive and engine components have been great, I've been very disappointed with the quality and am considering selling. I used to recommend Mazda to everyone, used to work at their dealership. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can anymore. Such a shame -- great care let down by quality issues -- all of which are NOT uncommon!
I’ve had my 2018 Mazda 3 hatch Touring AT for a few months now and I love it. Super reliable, comfortable, better drivability than my gf’s Honda Civic. It’s also has a very reliable 6 speed automatic transmission from Aisin Japan. I hate CVT transmissions. The 2.5L drives very sporty.
Here in China, when people consider whether or not to buy a Mazda3, what they don't like is the noise from engines and tire especially when at over 80k/h and the backseat leg space. The same confusion for me right now when I am trying to get a compact car easy to drive and handle also with a good fuel efficiency
mazda 3 doesnt suck. i drive it all the time. Picks up speed like nothing and one of the best cars out there for turning at high speed. Handling is just amazing
How about forking out $80 - $100 dollars every 6 - 12 month & getting it 'professionally' detailed. If you bought the car new (and Mazda's are very well made), try looking after it. Even looking at the paintwork in this video, it needs a good polish/was treatment !!!
just learn proper driving. i will change the tyries on my car next year, aber about 25000 miles (do not know the excat number, since i use a different set of tyries in the winter). not that it is a must, but because the grip degeneration, compared to new tryies, start to get on my nerves. but those are continental sport contact 5 on a 328i f31, that has been a few times on the nordschleife ...
+amduser86 The stock tires for my MCS were Hankook Optimo H426 195/55-16. A completely inadequate tire for the torque the F56 MCS produces. Plus, I live in Arkansas and those tires got driven hard. When it rained those tires were disaster. Seriously shoddy tires.

Bought a mazda 3 as a poor student. Never broken down. Never cost me a cent more than I anticipated. Handles like a much more expensive car through corners. Especially with nice tires and a stiffer rear sway. I am looking forward to buying something more expensive with a bit of silly power. Not looking forward to saying goodbye my little 3 though.
I really wished Mazda made some performance models. The Miata is too limp-wristed and not really suitable for everyday use. The 3 could really do with a hot version. And not a stupid one like the MPS was, but something nice like a GTI.
Stalled this car more than most? And not a new driver? Huh. I haven't stalled mine once and I definitely should have, popped the clutch without revving it up and still managed to get it going (though bucking 3-4 times). Any other car would have stalled immediately. This is by far the easiest and most forgiving manual I've ever driven. Don't know how one would even stall it.

Very helpful review especially because it comes from sm1 who has actually used this car for a long time. I'm on a budget and am considering buying this car. Only concern I have is the resale value. And since you've mentioned tires, I'd probably have to get new ones since we rarely see those cold temps here in Texas.
The hatchback form factor makes so much sense. It transforms compact cars into mini station wagons. It enables car owners to make maximum use of the interior volume of their vehicle. By contrast, the two door sedan or coupe with a conventional trunk is one of the worst form factors for passenger vehicles. Much of the interior volume of the vehicle is rendered unusable, because it can only be accessed by folding the front seats down and maneuvering passengers or freight diagonally through the gap between the folded down front seat and the back of the front door jamb.
I own since new a 2009 Mazda 3 with 184,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. I just got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn a drop of synthetic oil
Getting rid of the Mazda 3 will save you a lot headaches. I can remember my 2014 Mazda 3 had 2 transmissions put in it the 2 1/2 years I had it. Bought brand new, never abused it and kept up on the maintenance schedule religiously.
I had a 1st gen MAzda3 hatch with the 2.3 MZR in it. It was a great car. I always said I would go back for a new Speed6 or Speed3 if they became available. They are getting hard to find now unmolested.

I switched around a few tires because I have over 110k miles on my 2015 Mazda3 and the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 is the BEST summer tires for this car since I live in Florida. And man, my car still drives like new! Amazing car~
@@sage1622 , First one was purchased new in 2007, second one new in 2016, I hoped that after 9 years and updates to chassis, technology, workmanship, etc. that they would be producing a better product. But they didn't. It was at both those times, in my opinion, the better looking of the economy car segment. And at a price point I could afford to buy new. I would not recommend. Just my opnion.

@@sage1622 , at your age, get what you like and feels right to you. You will go through many vehicles in your lifetime and each will have a story for you. My first car was a 1981 Pontiac Lemans, plain jane, drove the shit out of that car for 7 years. Fond memories of that car.
Subaru vehicles have their quirks too though. I've driven 3 different Mazda vehicles over the past decade. I've never had more fun driving than I've had with them, and the reliability for each of them has been amazing. I don't have time for garage visits. I go to the garage for 'real' maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, etc. If you're having electrical issues... or an alternator goes out... or your door handle falls off.... and you're not even at 60,000 miles, you've clearly bought the wrong vehicle. Sadly, I know people who have dealt with stuff like this. Before I was introduced to Mazda, I was one of those people myself. I still remember the Grand Am I had years ago. There was nothing wrong with it as far as how it looked, or even how it drove. The problem is that for the 7 years I had it, it was constantly in/out of the garage. One thing after the other. It's pretty hard to give a vehicle a good review when it constantly breaks down. At the end of the day, stuff like that still matters!
I completely agree. My fiance has a 2015 Mazda3 as a daily and that thing is unbelievably impossible to keep clean. I don't know why but every single surface and material becomes incredibly dirty. We take it to be washed every 1-3 weeks depending on weather. Now I know it's her car but that thing just eats and shows makeup and whatever other skin flakes and shit on every single surface. It soaks it up too. We've had the car detailed twice before kind of giving up on keeping it ultra clean. It just ended up back to messy within a week. The leather shows where your head and hands and just general skin touch it. The buttons soak up skin oil. The knob for controls, black plastic, and silver plastic all become "phone screen after a phone call" gross. And the carpet is woven in a way that makes it hell to vacuum out any hairs. A friend of mine has the same car and although his complaints are lesser (the whole no makeup thing), he still get annoyed that a simple rag with cleaning agent won't remove a lot of stuff from these materials. The only other car we've had that was this kind of nightmare of mess was our 2008 WRX. None of our other cars appear to get this dirty. Still a great car though.
I really want a mazda3. The 2 points that make me rethink are the plastics colleciting oil and crap, and I was considering the manual, but the hill assist sounds annoying.

Some of the premium brands have they same set up. Consumers started demanding bigger screens. so some buyers w get a car becaue its screen is 1: bigger. I think it looks great. tho i will be honest i dont think initially they had the their dash layout in mind w such a big screen in mind. In the Cx5 the new one its built in the dash.
While it does look a little awkward, the higher mounting position and straight up angle of the screen haven't really caused me any glare issues compared to a couple other cars I've been in where the screen was mounted lower. Also I find it being mounted higher puts it more in my line of sight while driving without being distracting. So whether it was an afterthought or not, I think it's a good design, imo.

I think the only thing about the screen... is that it would be nice if it lowered into the dash while not in use. Look at some of the higher end Mercedes models.... they have the same 'floating' screen set-up (howbeit a bit larger than this one, of course).... there's nothing really wrong with the concept. It just would be nice if it could 'go away' while not in use. Maybe that'll be updated on future 3 models.
" the higher end Mercedes " ...It would be neat but you answered your own question. Having such a feature would add to the price of the car. The profit margins on compacts is small. So they would either have to pass on the cost or eat it. The 3 is a bit on the pricey for this class as is.
We just traded in ours a 2015 Mazda 3 itouring and it was a very fun car to drive, great handling and a very good value. Prices in its range it had push to start and rear back up camera and blind spot monitoring and a pretty cool infotainment system even if it didn't have a CD player or gps (higher models have) my only gripe was sometimes the low end power just wasn't there and the car didn't want to kick down a gear. In spirited driving the trip tronic was the only way, but you won't win many drag races unless against a Prius or something lol. All in all a good car and I only got rid of it because we needed a bigger car for the baby coming. We went with a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 touring and couldn't be happier, Mazda is a great car and I'm really a Nissan Guy (our other car is a 16 Maxima SR)
I drive both my 3 and 6 around in manual mode mostly. I'd prefer a straight-up manual but my wife doesn't know how to drive manual. Anyway, driving around in manual mode isn't 'pretending'. It's actually very practical. Everybody knows that most Mazda vehicles don't have a whole lot of torque until you get over 4500 RPM. When you start manually shifting, and start owning the shift points, it changes the whole driving experience (for the better). Also, during inclement weather, if you find yourself on an icy road, you may wish to downshift rather than brake. Also not a bad way to slow down in heavy traffic either. I hate 'brake riders'. If you want to slow down a bit, just downshift, no need to hit the brake pedal. I laugh when people give me the 'it's cheaper to change your brakes than transmission' speech. I just hit 100,000 miles on my Mazda6 and I've driven the heck out of it. I really do mean that too. I have flushed the transmission fluid 3 times because I know how vitally important and expensive the transmission is. However, I have given my 6 the beat down time after time over 8 years and the transmission is solid as a rock. So go ahead and shift into manual mode as soon as you can. :)
Some Pledge and a microfiber towel is all you need. I stopped buying interior detailing spray as soon as I discovered that a can of Pledge or Favor furniture polish works just as well. (Just make sure to spray it on the rag and not the components or gauge binnacle). It works awesome 😎

I don't know what kind of corolla you have in the US, but I have been in a Corolla hatchback in Europe at 120mph and while it is certainly not as refined as a more premium vehicle, it is definitely stable and there is not much noise except for the wind

I've had my 2015 M3 GT for 2 years, I love it. I have the six speed manual and don't have any issues when i want to take off in a heartbeat. I dont take off like a rabbit all the time but if I need to it will move.

I love my 2016 3sGT manual hatchback. To me, it's the best all around compact car available today. I think I would've also been very happy with a 2017 Civic turbo hatchback. It's the best styled and speced Civic in many years, but it wasn't available when I was shopping, still isn't.
When lease was up on our Mercedes C250 Coupe we replaced it with a loaded Mazda3 GT. Absolutely amazing. It drives like a BMW and sips fuel like a Prius. How can you miss? Grand-Slam out of the ballpark.

Re tires: running this car in sedan on 8x18 wheels and 215/45 eagle f1 asymmetric 3s - it's a joy to ride. Great braking, great handling, a bit worse fuel economy, the riding comfort is still kept there though, and the road noise pretty much gone. Overall I think this is very respectable and underrated car. I have to say that there seems to be no issue known to me with the Mexico-built cars. What I do know is that the next (4th) gen is built in Japan again, so, you can take that into consideration.
+ Great stability and handling, while retaining very respectable ride comfort.
+ Great looks, very ellegant, and because of being underrated, you don't see that many of them.
+ Naturally aspirated 2.0 is joy to ride. It's not fast, but it's more than enough.
+ The interior is really, really nice for the price point. It feels a class higher. The facelifted variant got rid of the fake carbon fiber, but introduced some extra crappy piano black...
+ Comes with Android auto support from 2016 - NOTE that applies only to the facelifted 2016+ variants, and has to be retro-fitted for about 200 bucks (new software, some hardware changes, labor). You can do it for free and also on pre-2016 cars, but you won't get powerful enough USB to charge the phone while using navigation, so, it's great that it can be done, but it has issues.
+ The stablity asssistents in this car actually work. I mean it. You feel them working when you go over the edge. At this point, it's aging and cheap car, but it works so well.
+ Normal manual controls for volume and AC. Knobs you can control the infotainment with fully while driving without ever touching the screen (the touchscreen is actually deactivated while driving as well, that's perhaps an overkill, but I am still glad they did it).
/ Note that the 2.0 came in 2 variants, 88kw and 121kw. The engine is the same, you can get 88kw safely chipped to about 118kw. It will make the engine deliver more power above 4k rpm. HOWEVER, the 88kw also came with longer gear ratios (you can reach 110kph in 2 and 160kph in 3). Longer ratios means worse acceleration and better economy. Take this info for what it's worth to you.
/ Mazdas used to have terrible reputation for rusting. The finish is still reputed to be a bit fragile, but I can say that so far, so good. I haven't seen this gen cars rusting so far, so, it means they solved it. Just note that the complaints from the gen 1 and gen 2 seem to no longer apply to this gen 3.
- Does not offer liftback/combi. Hatch or sedan, that's it.
- It's a very noisy cabin. You can hear the road noise unless you get quiet tires. At highway speeds, you can hear a lot of wind through the doors and windows.
- The gauge cluster sucks my balls as well.
- The cup holders are in a place where you will knock something down with your elbow, if you put a high cup or a bottle in.
- The arm rest is fairly back and low, meaning it's not very usable for actual arm resting. Has a very nice cargo space though.
- The USB ports are hidden in the arm rest. If you want to charge your phone, you need to get 1m cable which goes around the stick.
- Some complain about way too light steering wheel. You get used to it and the car market is full of it, so, not sure if it's worth mentioning.
- The dead pedal sucks, but you can get alumin(i)um dead pedal cover from the manufaturer fitted, optionally with alumin(i)um pedals as well. Not mentioning other possible aftermarket solutions.
- I don't have the headsup display, but many complain about it's low quality/a lot of vibrations in it, making it hard to read.
- For the size of the car, it lacks leg space in the back. For example Škoda Octavia has pretty much the same wheel distances, but it certainly at least feels bigger inside than this car does.
- The infotainment is fine and can be customized in aftermarket ways, but at least by default there is noticeable delay between everything which is annoying. Again, nothing unheard of in the category and age, so, almost not worth mentioning.
How would you go about customizing it aftermarket?

Up in Canada we can only get a standard transmission with the GT, so feel lucky. Secondly, to solve your gripes its easy; Always have a microfibre cloth handy to wipe the interior and only microfibre as they don't scratch. Buy a new set of tires, preferably Michelins which I swear by. They'll make the car feel much better, enhance the performance and last much longer...guaranteed. My daily driver is an '05 Mazda3 GT 2.3 5spd, which I bought new. Fifteen years and 230k miles and she drives like new. Mind you I've had her oil sprayed yearly, kept regular maintenance, and had most of the suspension replaced around 170k. One of the best cars I've had.
Does anybody get how spoiled we are? My first car was a 1964 Rambler American. I had to fix its engine before I could even drive it. It was a POS. If I could have had a Mazda 3 back then I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven.

Haha, SO true! My first car was a 2-year old '74 Chevy Vega GT that was already rusting through around the windows (a So Cal car!) and a year into owning it the engine blew with 60,000 miles on it. I'd have been blown away by even the base model 2013 Mazda3!

Les Ordway - If commenting on the character of the car is your version of complaining, then your comments are outright bitchy by comparison. Quit being so sensitive, if the brakes squeal at warmer temps or the passenger-car gearing means it doesn't accelerate as fast as a sports-geared Miata then mentioning those characteristics isn't the same as complaining. So quit trying to conflate basic comments with complaints, especially when he obviously gave the upside of those characteristics (fun to drive in the cold, high MPGs, and the customizable infotainment system).

I drive an identical car (2014 Mazda 3i GT manual) and absolutely LOVE it. I traded in an '07 Mazda3s GT manual that had over 200k on it. At the time I bought the 2014, you couldn't get an 3s GT w/ manual transmission (think you can now). Overall this is a fair review but there are a few things in the review I personally disagree with. While it's no Porsche, the 2.0 has more get up and go than most people will need. It's considerably faster off the line than my '07 2.3. As he mentioned the power fades at higher RPM but a quick downshift is all that's needed for passing or climbing steep hills. I drive fast and the only time I've ever wanted more power has been driving through mountains. The handling is incrdedible in this car. Its a blast to drive on twisty roads or zipping through traffic. I cant say I noticed dramatic seasonal difference w/ the stock Yokahama and I got almost 50k miles out of them. As he mentioned, cargo area in the hatchback is good, like a small SUV. I can get my mountain bike in there w/o taking the front tire off. While I'd prefer a retractable cargo cover, I haven't had issue w/ the plastic one cutting me. I agree there needs to be a "dead pedal" for the left foot. The carpeting is fairly thin so shows wear quickly in that area. The rest of the interior is very high quality for this price range. The infotainment system has a learning curve but is much more intuitive than others I've seen. The control knob in the center console is very easy to use allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. The seats are a little narrow but are comfortable and have good lateral support. At 6'2" and 210# I've never complained about them. The bottom line for this car is value! It's high quality, reliable, economical and a blast to drive! If you're a driving enthusiast on a budget, you really can't beat it!

i just bought a 2014 Mazda3 S GT hatch over the weekend, my first car purchase (I'm 24). It's a huge step up for me from family hand-me-downs, and I just love it...I guess I don't know enough about cars to not be impressed by the speed and handling. To me, the 2.5L accelerates quick, the tires really grip (maybe you shouldve gotten the 18's), the exterior in white and the leather interior are gorgeous, it's turned a grueling 1.5 hour work commute into something I (almost) look forward to
I have owned just two Mazdas in my life. The first was a 1994 323 Astina with a 5 speed manual. I was the second owner and the car was in flawless condition when I bought it. Everything on that car worked so well I was really impressed! I had no plans on getting rid of it, but some idiot ran a red light and shoved a Toyota SUV into me as I sat at the lights on the other side of the intersection, so that was the end of that. My worry was; how am I gonna replace that car with something similar, for a good price? A workmate told me about his Mom’s 2006 SP 23 5-speed manual, that she’d owned since new and was selling after buying a new car, so I took a look. The SP23 has a 2.3L engine and a bunch of extras on it and the price was just right, so I bought it and I’ve owned it since. It currently has 365,000kms (about 227k miles) on it and it’s going strong as ever. I look after it with regular oil changes and such, but I don’t exactly baby it either. I did have to replace the clutch at around 200k miles, but that’s not a big deal really. Also had a front suspension shock absorber bite the dust around the same time, so a pair of newbies there and that’s all I’ve had to spend in the last 7 years.
This car is not perfect, but at least it doesn’t have any of those bloody annoying ‘helpful’ features like the hillstart assist you talk about. I will NEVER own a car like that, no matter what! I recently drove a 2023 Kia for a bit and the number of ‘Driver assist functions drove me crazy! I don’t need or want the car deciding that it needs to take over the steering or the braking whenever IT feels like I don't know what I’m doing! I drive the car, not the other way round. The car should just accpet the inputs that I decide to feed in and that should be that. This reliance on tech is dangerous IMHO.
When I got my first drivers license (1972), you were not allowed to go for the test in an Automatic car and as far as I’m concerned, if you can't drive a stick, you can't drive, PERIOD! Clutch and accelerator control, especially on hill starts, is vital for learning how to apply power smoothly and safely in all kinds of situations, like icy roads, etc. Things like that give you a better understanding of how power is applied to the road by the drivetrain and you cannot truly get a feel for that if all you can drive is an automatic. It also makes you THINK more about what you’re actually doing, rather than allowing you to switch off your brain as you go down the road in a ton of steel and plastic.
Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, Mazda’s provide excellent value for money and I love mine. I’m old school too, I believe in the dictum; If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. (or replace it, in this case)

And I don't mean low budget as derogatory, I just don't want to compare your work with Jay Leno's or Top Gear. I hope your channel grows immensely and that you'll eventually get there.
As a Mazda 3 owner (previous gen) I'd like to say the styling of these new gen are easily one of the best looking cars in the segment. The Kodo design translates so well that even the CX-5 being a crossover looks appealing.
Do you think Mazda will use the new architecture of the new CX-9 on other models in the near future, so they can offer an improved driving experience for their customers?
My 2015 3 is really spot on with the Mazda brand. My only headache is the infotainment center and honestly I think it's just very picky and hates Iphones a lot. Getting map updates took some time to figure that one out since Tom Tom no longer provides services for gps. And the very intuitive controls are blocked if you have a drink in the cup holder. But I average 37 mpg with my manual 2.0 and I drive the snot out of my car.

I never hit that board your talking about and the trunk is not alot, its actually quite small compared to Honda. Other than that, its a good car to drive on road trip and the tech it comes with standard is amazing given if you not in that need of trunk space rear seat leg room. I had zero mechanical issues with this car.

40k miles on mine and I never thought I would say this but I love it. I really had in mind trading it in later but I'm thinking of keeping it.
We solved the road noise by using quiet tyres as we progressively changed them. Best car we've had. Just love driving it. Great when driving steady, and really rises to fast driving.

I've owned and modified Honda's since 1995. The Mazda 3 is more Honda in nature than the new Civic is. I'll explain, the old school Honda's/Acura's were designed to be fun to drive even though they weren't fast. The view of the road and super responsive steering/handling is what made up for the lack of raw power. Honda knew that driver impression was the key to winning a segment as long as reliability or quality weren't sacrificed. Honda began to feel its cars weren't "grown-up" enough and since they weren't benefiting very much from the aftermarket they just blew-up their whole line-up and began to build "vanilla" boring vehicles. Mazda 3 is IMO designed with the driver impression in mind.

Mazda is the last company keeping the N/A engine alive. Something I would have expected from Honda. When they dropped their quality at around 2005, Honda died for me. They are lightyears away from what made them so great. Now, Honda is just one manufacturer of many.
It's Mazda being innovative and selling cars that feel better than they have any right to be.

I clean my 2015 Mazda 3 twice a month at the car wash. Looks like new each time. 92,000+ miles on it now with maintenance and it works like when I drove it off the lot.
I really love my s grand touring. the 2.5 Liter with paddle shifters is just fun to drive daily.

I just bought the 2017 Mazda 3 2.0L a few weeks ago and so far I am very happy with it. For the class, it has great steering input and a decent manual gearbox. It's not fast, but it is easy on the wallet and you won't lose your license when you run the piss out of it. The 2.5L would have been nice, but in Canada you have to go to the top trim level for that option.
How is your 2017 holding up? I'm thinking of investing in a 2016 Maz3 as my first vehicle that'll be my daily driver to and from work

I have a 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2.0 and automatic transmission. I drive it daily round trip almost 100 miles to work and back. The car is approaching 80,000 miles and I have had 0 problems with it. I intend on driving this car to the ground. The gas mileage is good and I have more than enough power to pass cars and merge on the highway. All of my commute is highway and I average about 75 or 80 miles an hour. I have no complaints at all. Plus the soul red with fresh wax on it is beautiful.
These are great cars. I rent cars every week because of my job, sometimes keep a car a week or more, and the Mazdas are some of my favorites.
I had the 1990 Mazda Protege' and loved every second of it for 14 years. Traded in for the 2004 Mazda 3 and it's been everything that my Protege' was and still runs like a champ! You can always say you wish your car did this or had that..... I in my experience the 2 Mazda's I have owned, the mechanics and functions of the cars has been flawless and they were very responsive and fun to drive. I buy a car for reliability, and it's hard to find something this reliable in this price range... there's nothing better than never taking the car to the shop, having it paid off ( no more car payment ) and it still never gives you any grief for years..... that's vacation money!!! or money that just goes into savings!! My friends and family are always buying and trading and complaining about trips to the dealership for repairs.... none of them have ever owned a Mazda. Oh, and mine gets dirty too... amazing what a microfiber towel will do.

Funny... 15 years ago next month, I went to a Mercedes dealer with cash in hand to buy a new C-class "starter Benz." The salesman was a bit of a jerk, telling me what I wanted on my new car and reneging on our previously agree-to price. After a couple hours of discussion, I left. A few months later, I found a Protege5, the precursor to the Mazda 3 hatchback. I fell in love and bought it outright for half of what the Benz would have cost me. I still have the Protege5, and it's still a blast to drive and reliable A.F. Every time I see one of those C-class Benz, I literally say to myself "There for the grace of God go I."
I had the opposite experience. Back in 2015 I was cross-shopping a C class with the Mazda6. The Mazda dealership was a total trainwreck. The showroom was small and the salesman showed no interest in showing me the car, features, or anything else for the matter. I asked for a test drive and he basically ignored me. Went to the Benz dealership down the street and was able to test drive the car easily with no pressure to buy. Guess which one I bought at the end.

Getting pretty mixed messages from this video, and as some others have said some form of structure would have been nice. An informative, real world opinion of the car nonetheless.
A lot of the things you mentioned (apart from hill start assist) could easily be resolved with long term ownership - for example the tires. It seems like you're nitpicking at things that can be changed to personal preferences, and the ending message - that you liked the car and would buy it again - sounds hollow when paired up with everything else you mentioned.

Alex G I've had pilot sport a\s on my 3 for 140 of it's 160k miles. They make a massive difference and bring the car to life.
Wild and Crazy kids, absolutely the ps3 are amazing tires, the new ps4 that came out are just stellar too, better than pilot super sports at a much lower cost theres no reason not to get them.
I recommend trying the ps4 if you can they grip like nobodys business!
You asked the dealer if they could turn off the hill assist, if a new Mazda has cylinder deactivation can a dealer turn that off?

All my life i have owned nothing but mazdas for my daily driver. Why you ask??? Many years ago my mom bought a yellow mazda as her first car. It was a mazda 808 2 door. The car was a work horse and always provided trouble free service. Flash foward in time since my mom enjoyed her car so much i ended up buying mazda glc 323 and 3 mazda 3's over my lifetime. Also owned other cars yet my daily driver always had a mazda in the driveway. Most underated vehicle and best value for the price....zoom zoom.

I think a lot of the divergence of opinions in these comments is a matter of experience relative to expectations.
If you're expecting a 2.0L Mazda 3 to be a BMW M3/M4 but cheaper, you will be disappointed.
If you're expecting the Mazda 3 to be a Civic/Corolla-class compact sedan/hatchback with a bit of Miata spirit in it, then you might be pleased with it.
I am in the latter camp, and I'm extremely fond of my 2016 J-VIN 2.0L 6MT sedan (in Soul Red).
I would note that, in my shopping/purchasing experience, there was significantly more individual difference between the Mazda 3s I test drove than most other cars I've sampled. The one I ultimately purchased seemed to be (and still is) a much more engaging car than others I tested. Perhaps large car-to-car variation explains some of the differing experiences owners report here.

I put 130k on my Mazda3. Picking up a Brand New 2.5 Touring Hatchback tomorrow, I would recommend Mazda products to anyone. They're not the fastest, not the quickest, not the most luxurious, but when you add all the goods with all the bads, they're just the most well made quality fun driving machines out there, and under $22k! Can't beat it!

I took my sGT to the track and was......impressed with what the car could do with it's power to weight ratio. It was not a DC5 k20z1 , I was entertained by the paddle shifters and was really trying to break the car loose. The suspension geometry is really engineered well. I walked away from the track day knowing I could throw this car into a situation and come out alive and well. The sGT does have the big tach dial and needle with digital speedo.
My wife has one of these. My biggest complaint is low-end grunt (or lack there of) and road noise.
Need the 2.5L man.... that's all. It's so easy to chirp the tires (you do it without even trying in the 2.5L). Trust me, I've been pulled over for it without even trying.
Rented one from Avis for a trip from TX to the Grand Canyon and it was a delight. Looking forward to the next gen... it’s sure to be a winner.

I have a 2015 S Touring Manual hatchback and the driving experience and powertrain have been generally great (knock on wood). However I've been a bit disappointed with the quality of the car's components, and mine's the Japanese-made one:
- Leather steering wheel is starting to tear
- Driver door lock has failed 3x and the 4th lock is buzzing again too
- Both front door Bose speakers have blown due to a design flaw where water leaks from the windows outside down into the unprotected speakers which corrodes them prematurely.
- Headlights have condensation trapped in them
- Creaky front suspension is starting to develop
- Cabin air filter has been changed three times due to musty smell
- Major orange peel in the finish and thin paint in general... lots of mini rock chips
All at just under 50,000 miles!
And I'm the type of person to park at the back of every parkinglot, handwash or touchless carwashes weekly, no food in the car, avoid potholes like the plague...
So although the drive and engine components have been great, I've been very disappointed with the quality and am considering selling. I used to recommend Mazda to everyone, used to work at their dealership. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can anymore.

I’ve had my 2018 Mazda 3 hatch Touring AT for a few months now and I love it. Super reliable, comfortable, better drivability than my gf’s Honda Civic. It’s also has a very reliable 6 speed automatic transmission from Aisin Japan. I hate CVT transmissions. The 2.5L drives very sporty.

Here in China, when people consider whether or not to buy a Mazda3, what they don't like is the noise from engines and tire especially when at over 80k/h and the backseat leg space. The same confusion for me right now when I am trying to get a compact car easy to drive and handle also with a good fuel efficiency
mazda 3 doesnt suck. i drive it all the time. Picks up speed like nothing and one of the best cars out there for turning at high speed. Handling is just amazing

I'm impressed you got 27,000 miles from the stock tires. I had to change my F56 MCS stock tires after 14k miles. They were trashed.
When I had my 2004 Mazda3 hatchback, I had to replace the stock Goodyear tires at 28,000 miles. These tires were made in Japan!
just learn proper driving. i will change the tyries on my car next year, aber about 25000 miles (do not know the excat number, since i use a different set of tyries in the winter). not that it is a must, but because the grip degeneration, compared to new tryies, start to get on my nerves. but those are continental sport contact 5 on a 328i f31, that has been a few times on the nordschleife ...
+amduser86 The stock tires for my MCS were Hankook Optimo H426 195/55-16. A completely inadequate tire for the torque the F56 MCS produces. Plus, I live in Arkansas and those tires got driven hard. When it rained those tires were disaster. Seriously shoddy tires.
My old 2012 Mazda6 ran ~35k on stock tires before I had to change.
I have put about 6k on my 2014 Mazda 3. On my old 2010, I had to change my tires around 18k.
I did a video about why I sold my CX-3 and got tons of thumbs down and negative feedback. Be prepared. People get offended that you might sell a car they think is the best on earth no matter what your reasons.

Bought a mazda 3 as a poor student. Never broken down. Never cost me a cent more than I anticipated. Handles like a much more expensive car through corners. Especially with nice tires and a stiffer rear sway. I am looking forward to buying something more expensive with a bit of silly power. Not looking forward to saying goodbye my little 3 though.
I really wished Mazda made some performance models.
The Miata is too limp-wristed and not really suitable for everyday use. The 3 could really do with a hot version. And not a stupid one like the MPS was, but something nice like a GTI.
Stalled this car more than most? And not a new driver? Huh.
I haven't stalled mine once and I definitely should have, popped the clutch without revving it up and still managed to get it going (though bucking 3-4 times). Any other car would have stalled immediately. This is by far the easiest and most forgiving manual I've ever driven. Don't know how one would even stall it.

Very helpful review especially because it comes from sm1 who has actually used this car for a long time. I'm on a budget and am considering buying this car. Only concern I have is the resale value. And since you've mentioned tires, I'd probably have to get new ones since we rarely see those cold temps here in Texas.
Whatever the ticket price is on the Mazda, you have to pay 25-30% more in another brand to get the same experience and quality as a driver.
The hatchback form factor makes so much sense. It transforms compact cars into mini station wagons. It enables car owners to make maximum use of the interior volume of their vehicle.
By contrast, the two door sedan or coupe with a conventional trunk is one of the worst form factors for passenger vehicles. Much of the interior volume of the vehicle is rendered unusable, because it can only be accessed by folding the front seats down and maneuvering passengers or freight diagonally through the gap between the folded down front seat and the back of the front door jamb.

I own since new a 2009 Mazda 3 with 184,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. I just got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn a drop of synthetic oil
Getting rid of the Mazda 3 will save you a lot headaches. I can remember my 2014 Mazda 3 had 2 transmissions put in it the 2 1/2 years I had it. Bought brand new, never abused it and kept up on the maintenance schedule religiously.
hill assist that can't be disabled is a dealbreaker for me. i drove a leon (basically a golf) and also had an issue stalling it when it was enabled.
I had a 1st gen MAzda3 hatch with the 2.3 MZR in it. It was a great car. I always said I would go back for a new Speed6 or Speed3 if they became available. They are getting hard to find now unmolested.

I switched around a few tires because I have over 110k miles on my 2015 Mazda3 and the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 is the BEST summer tires for this car since I live in Florida. And man, my car still drives like new! Amazing car~
Hill assist as it name says is assist at a hill, not on the flat road... if they hold on flat, you probably got a faulty system.
I've had 2 Mazda 3's in my time, and would recommend if you want rattles and squeaks, and an economy car with lackluster gusto.

@@sage1622 , First one was purchased new in 2007, second one new in 2016, I hoped that after 9 years and updates to chassis, technology, workmanship, etc. that they would be producing a better product. But they didn't.
It was at both those times, in my opinion, the better looking of the economy car segment. And at a price point I could afford to buy new. I would not recommend. Just my opnion.

I've driven 3 different Mazda vehicles over the past decade. I've never had more fun driving than I've had with them, and the reliability for each of them has been amazing. I don't have time for garage visits. I go to the garage for 'real' maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, etc.
If you're having electrical issues... or an alternator goes out... or your door handle falls off.... and you're not even at 60,000 miles, you've clearly bought the wrong vehicle. Sadly, I know people who have dealt with stuff like this. Before I was introduced to Mazda, I was one of those people myself.
I still remember the Grand Am I had years ago. There was nothing wrong with it as far as how it looked, or even how it drove. The problem is that for the 7 years I had it, it was constantly in/out of the garage. One thing after the other. It's pretty hard to give a vehicle a good review when it constantly breaks down. At the end of the day, stuff like that still matters!

I completely agree. My fiance has a 2015 Mazda3 as a daily and that thing is unbelievably impossible to keep clean. I don't know why but every single surface and material becomes incredibly dirty. We take it to be washed every 1-3 weeks depending on weather. Now I know it's her car but that thing just eats and shows makeup and whatever other skin flakes and shit on every single surface. It soaks it up too. We've had the car detailed twice before kind of giving up on keeping it ultra clean. It just ended up back to messy within a week. The leather shows where your head and hands and just general skin touch it. The buttons soak up skin oil. The knob for controls, black plastic, and silver plastic all become "phone screen after a phone call" gross. And the carpet is woven in a way that makes it hell to vacuum out any hairs. A friend of mine has the same car and although his complaints are lesser (the whole no makeup thing), he still get annoyed that a simple rag with cleaning agent won't remove a lot of stuff from these materials. The only other car we've had that was this kind of nightmare of mess was our 2008 WRX. None of our other cars appear to get this dirty.
Still a great car though.

Some of the premium brands have they same set up. Consumers started demanding bigger screens. so some buyers w get a car becaue its screen is 1: bigger. I think it looks great. tho i will be honest i dont think initially they had the their dash layout in mind w such a big screen in mind. In the Cx5 the new one its built in the dash.
While it does look a little awkward, the higher mounting position and straight up angle of the screen haven't really caused me any glare issues compared to a couple other cars I've been in where the screen was mounted lower. Also I find it being mounted higher puts it more in my line of sight while driving without being distracting. So whether it was an afterthought or not, I think it's a good design, imo.

I think the only thing about the screen... is that it would be nice if it lowered into the dash while not in use. Look at some of the higher end Mercedes models.... they have the same 'floating' screen set-up (howbeit a bit larger than this one, of course).... there's nothing really wrong with the concept. It just would be nice if it could 'go away' while not in use. Maybe that'll be updated on future 3 models.
" the higher end Mercedes " ...It would be neat but you answered your own question. Having such a feature would add to the price of the car. The profit margins on compacts is small. So they would either have to pass on the cost or eat it. The 3 is a bit on the pricey for this class as is.
We just traded in ours a 2015 Mazda 3 itouring and it was a very fun car to drive, great handling and a very good value. Prices in its range it had push to start and rear back up camera and blind spot monitoring and a pretty cool infotainment system even if it didn't have a CD player or gps (higher models have) my only gripe was sometimes the low end power just wasn't there and the car didn't want to kick down a gear. In spirited driving the trip tronic was the only way, but you won't win many drag races unless against a Prius or something lol. All in all a good car and I only got rid of it because we needed a bigger car for the baby coming. We went with a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 touring and couldn't be happier, Mazda is a great car and I'm really a Nissan Guy (our other car is a 16 Maxima SR)
I drive both my 3 and 6 around in manual mode mostly. I'd prefer a straight-up manual but my wife doesn't know how to drive manual. Anyway, driving around in manual mode isn't 'pretending'. It's actually very practical. Everybody knows that most Mazda vehicles don't have a whole lot of torque until you get over 4500 RPM. When you start manually shifting, and start owning the shift points, it changes the whole driving experience (for the better).
Also, during inclement weather, if you find yourself on an icy road, you may wish to downshift rather than brake. Also not a bad way to slow down in heavy traffic either. I hate 'brake riders'. If you want to slow down a bit, just downshift, no need to hit the brake pedal.
I laugh when people give me the 'it's cheaper to change your brakes than transmission' speech. I just hit 100,000 miles on my Mazda6 and I've driven the heck out of it. I really do mean that too. I have flushed the transmission fluid 3 times because I know how vitally important and expensive the transmission is. However, I have given my 6 the beat down time after time over 8 years and the transmission is solid as a rock.
So go ahead and shift into manual mode as soon as you can. :)
Joe Buchanan my new 16.5 cx5 had plenty of low end torque, the 2.5 is a night and day experience plus it has a sport mode which is great too!
Cars with the current infotaiment will get an upgrade to Android Auto, but they could have been a lot faster about it I think.

Get a plastic cleaning kit and that piano black will look great again. Put some wax on it even.
Some Pledge and a microfiber towel is all you need. I stopped buying interior detailing spray as soon as I discovered that a can of Pledge or Favor furniture polish works just as well. (Just make sure to spray it on the rag and not the components or gauge binnacle). It works awesome 😎
