RED Dragon-X DSMC2 Cinema Camera Review

  • RED recently announced the DSMC2 Dragon-X 5K camera. Since the RED Raven 4.5K camera and the Dragon-X both use the RED Dragon sensor, what's the difference? Is it worth upgrading from the RED Raven to the Dragon-X?
    If you are looking to up your cinematography game, the Dragon-X can certainly help you. The interchangeable lens mount means you can attach your favorite lenses even if they are something odd like a Nikon mount. You can also change out the Optical Low-Pass Filter or OLPF on the Dragon-X. This allows you to change how Infrared and Ultra Violet light are blocked from the sensor. The Skin Tone-Highlight OLPF has the best color rendition, while the Low-Light Optimized OLPF has the least amount of noise in low-light situations.
    We also found that the larger size of the sensor on the Dragon-X meant overall smaller noise and a wider image on the same lenses when compared to the RED Raven.
    Perhaps the biggest upgrade to the Dragon-X over the Epic Dragon is the ability to create color graded dailies in-camera. This means you can use with RED's new IPP2 color pipeline for your camera originals, and can also record ProRes or DNxHR 2K proxies in Rec. 709 with the director of photography's creative LUT applied directly to the footage.

    Finally a more detailed look into the Dragon X. Thankyou so much for your valid input! I was considering buying a DSMC EPIC X for $10K which is cheap! But for an extra $10K i could buy the Dragon X DSMC2...decisions.

    Some really great content coming out of this channel! Makes me wish I had the money for a Jellyfish. One note: as I understand it, the main reason for an OLPF is actually to prevent moiré at the cost of resolution/apparent sharpness. Cameras like the Nikon D800E remove the OLPF to squeeze out that extra little bit of resolution. Red is fairly unique in that it offers various OLPFs that affect exposure and color rendition (and cut IR/UV), but the primary function is still to prevent moiré, no?

    It’s maddening that Scarlet-W owners have to upgrade to Dragon-X to stay on upgrade path but it’s the SAME sensor (as Scarlet). RED basically came up with a $6k fee for existing owners and we have to pay it (to stay on upgrade path). Welcome to the upgrade treadmill.

    • @theyoungtravelier
      @theyoungtravelier 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This does suck as Scarlet-W owner.. however, I think the smart move is actually to just spend the $5K more and do the 10K upgrade to the Gemini which I see as the longer term play. DSMC3 is probably still about 2 years out IMO.

  • @RazorsRide
    @RazorsRide 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's not what an OLPF does!
    Red provides OLPF to filter out IR and UV light as well, and modify a bit of color acquisition. But in essence, an OLPF is tasked to filter out high spatial frequencies in the image (basically the most fine details, that the sensor can't record as details, and could record as aliasing).

    Just dont understand how anyone can justify dropping 20k on the same exact specs as a URSA Mini Pro G2. Black Magic's image quality is fantastic and the value is so much better. Plus you don't need to get roped into Red's proprietary ecosystem where you're paying 300 bucks for a cable and 1800 dollars for a hard drive.

    • @SouthernsBBQ
      @SouthernsBBQ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian Santiago Which specs are you comparing? Have you done any side by side testing with the two?

    • @christiansantiagophotography
      @christiansantiagophotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Southern aside from a slight difference in resolution, both cameras do the exact same thing and the ursa comes with built in NDs. Whatever incremental variances one might find aren’t enough to justify 3X premium.

    • @SouthernsBBQ
      @SouthernsBBQ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian Santiago Which things do they do exactly the same? Have you tested them side by side? Image quality has very little to do with marketing tech specs. They may be similar on paper, but what about in the real-world?
