Yess more videos with the hair flip!! And more Komodo coverage! Question: When shooting in prores when it does not crop when going to 2K. Does that mean you could shoot 2K 120fps without a crop if you shoot in prores rather than R3D? Another great video gents!
That is precisely a point i needed to clarify for myself, and on this topic the manual isnt very clear at the best, and probably stating wrong at the least.Even though i'm not Komodo owner yet, that's something i wanted to understand and i could finally get my answers, thanks to the YT community, and particularly to Silfen Path TH-cam channel. Actually everything is based on your main FORMAT SETTING: so as long as this one is set to 6k (whatever FILE FORMAT is choosen afterwards, RedRaw or Prores), then the sensor wont be cropped, and you can shoot up to 40/50 fps.Consequently (again only if your main FORMAT SETTING is 6k), in case you choose a Prores file format with a resolution of 4k, or even 2k, then the image will be 'subsampled' to these resolution from the 6k resolution (thus no crop) So for ex., you can shoot under Prores 4K resolution, with a Format based on the full sensor, up to 40/50 fps WITHOUT any crop, but you CANNOT shoot 60fps under Prores without having to change the FORMAT SETTING TO 4k, which is equivalent to opening a crop factor on the 6k sensor.(thus no subsampling in this case). CONCLUSION: Prores option wont allow us to avoid the crop factor on higher frame rates such as 60fps+, it will only allow us to shoot at a lower resolution (such as 4K or 2K) straight from the file, without crop on the sensor but with same frame rates restrictions as under 6k and Redraw file format. Hope this helps!
I've been underwhelmed with a lot of Komodo footage I've seen. Still pretty happy with my FX9. But I can see a couple generations down the line the Komodo successors (rather they'll be called Komodo or something else who knows) being good enough for me to want to switch. I'd love to see what the ProRes looks like in 120p, since that's really where the Komodo fell apart image-wise (although so does the FX9). That's really a C300 M3/A7Siii strong suit where some of these other cams struggle.
I agree man! I've been trying to find some really beautiful examples.. but it just looks underwhelming, and the skin tones just aren't there for me from what I've seen.
For those questioning what looks cinematic or not you can clearly see the side by side cuts around 7:00 and the difference between the Sony look and a real cinema camera is clearly noticeable.
I never liked the Sony look to be honest. I even tried one out and gave it a chance by buying the a7sII once it was released and could not stand the colours. However, in my opinion, there something about motion that feels off in the Sonys. Motion cadence or how the shutter interprets movement is key and Sony looks a lot like video and not digital film. I guess it’ll all come down to the kind of work you’re doing. Myself, I’ve had good and bad experiences with Sony cameras.
While this Red looks intimidating... the Canon C70 seems really interesting to compare to this. The C70 has internal ND, uses Canon color science, is small too... hmm 🤔
I keep watching Komodo videos thinking that eventually the image is going to blow me away, but the footage from every channel I have seen is lackluster compared to other cameras they have tested.
It's featured in the horrible 2010 b-movie Titanic II, and the also terrible b-movie S.O.S. Titanic from 1979, but it's the original RMS Queen Mary (launched in 1936). It was also featured in the original Poseidon Adventure movie from 1972 (which was actually based on a real encounter of the RMS Queen Mary with a rogue wave coming from the side that had almost capsized it).
There's definitely a difference though. And it just 'feels' different. A7SIII just is too sharp to get a cine feel to it. The transition on highlights to shadow are a bit more cut too. Great for commercial stuff, but wouldn't be my first choice to do a short or feature with!
@@ATMTech check Indy mogul channel where they comapred sony a7s3 with alexa mini and sony venice, with all cine lenses, the difference is barely notacable
Hello, I´m new to cinema camera´s and very interested in the Komodo being my first. So I´m sorry if I sound stupid and I´m missing something obvious here. But I cant wrap my head around what I see in this video, maybe someone can help me out here. Just look at 6:00-6:20 cutting back and forth between the two cameraes. The A7S3 looks MUCH better? You can just sense the bigger full frame format and its sharper, brighter, better colors, and even looks more cinematic. Where as the komodo looks less sharp, darker, more greenish, and of course less wide with its cropped sensor... And what if you treat the A7S3 as a cinema camera on set, with perfect focus pulling by someone else, expensive professional light setup and everything else that a cinema shoot requires. I guess it could be a similar situation with the S1H vs Komodo? What is happening.
I agree, the Sony does look great right out of camera. But the power of the Komodo comes later when you can manipulate the RAW footage into exactly what you want.
