Great video. We were early adopters of the Red cameras and bought an early one, upgrading as each new versions came out. We shot a lot of national television shows with one of these old beasts. As I recall, we replaced a Panasonic Varicam whose body cost us $75,000 and shot in 720 when HD first raised its ugly head. If you have a production crew of four or five camera people, then a big heavy camera is no problem. But if you are on your own, this thing will make you work for a living. The Red One is a pretty nice camera, and was revolutionary in it's time. However, doesn't the Blackmagic pocket 6k do the whole "~4.5k/30p 2k/120p, super 35mm sensor 12 bit internal raw, 13 stops dynamic range, for under $2000"? If you are alright with getting a 14 year old, used Red one, why not get a used/new 6k instead? They're still being manufactured, don't force proprietary media restrictions, boot much faster, weighs less, and have better low light than the Red One. I've even seen them go used on B&H for less than $1800. I was confused as to why it wasn't even brought up for comparison in this video.
He has one and has made multiple videos about it. The BMPCC is definitely a good camera, but there's a reason one was originally $16k($21k in today's money) and the other is $2k new. Red has an arguably better, more "film-like" sensor, has a global shutter, and is better build quality(metal vs plastic). Then there is form factor: do you need something with multiple XLR inputs, multiple video outputs, easier smooth motion because of the weight, and can survive drops and spills, or something that is more lightweight/compact, quick, but has no XLR in and will probably break if mishandled?
@@EpictheEpicest I completely agree with you on those points. The main thing I wanted to bring up is that the many of the selling points he made about the Red One can be applied to the Blackmagic, so it could have been an interesting point to compare the two directly in some way in the video. I understand that the video’s focus was on the Red, and that if you start to compare it with one camera, you’d have to compare it with even more and that wasn’t the goal here. I just think it was a missed opportunity to not discuss how the Red One stacks up to a more modern camera with very similar specs on paper.
@@ProtoDiscard I just looked back at his other videos featuring "older" cameras, and he does compare every one to his modern A6400, so you make a very good point. I personally would never buy a Red no matter how good it is, because their proprietary media still sits at 2006 prices. $2000 for a 1TB SSD? get fucked xD. At least with Blackmagic I have a c-fast to sata adapter that lets me use any SSD I want.
I actually bought a RED Scarlet-X a couple weeks ago at $2,000. Great camera, and I love the HDRX feature which gives you like 18 stops of dynamic range. The only downside is, the accessories are almost prohibitively expensive. That MYSTERIUM-X image is still damn good even 10 years later.
The reason the manufacturer blocked the 4K option for untested hard drives is because they did not want to get complaigns about camera freezing or skipping frames. Since 4K requires high bandwidth, many poor HDDs would cause stability issues, which the user would interpret as a problem with the camera itself. Hence, the limitation. Like the Sony A6400 is very picky about medai too, esp. if set to 4K 100M.
Love the review of older cameras. I keep looking for an inexpensive upgrade for my canon 70D. I am getting better with lighting and exposure which has done so much for my production quality and will continue to work with what I have but if I can upgrade on a low budget that would be great. Thanks!
As soon as these videos go up on quality old gear, the prices shoot through the roof. These go through 7500 Canadian now on eBay, which is a lot for 15 year old tech, no matter how beastly.
The camera model is incredible (min 7:39 in white). I have several 3D printers and would love to have one printed just like it. Could you tell me where you downloaded the file to print the 3D model? Thanks!
P.S. A 3D printed part would enable the use of a "after market" Hard Drive, hopefully Red will somehow update the firmware to not limit the video quality when using another brand of drive.
Hey mate, im sure Linus tech tips did a video on trying to get a normal SSD to work on a red camera...cant remember if he hacked it or not?..Good to see a red camera affordable to folk with shallow pockets, and not just for deep pocket folk.
I have an unused (so called Battle-tested) Red One MX with a 256 GB SSD Redmag for sale. (and a few other accessories, like another HDD, card reader, Nikon mount and so on)
Have a Red One Mx kit but can't find any suitable working redrives to use as media, allready sent 3 back. My 16gb red cf cards are limited and a red ssd is still to expensive. Shooting in 2k seems a waste as well. Any other suggestions?
One con that wasn't mentioned is that these cameras would randomly brick themselves. Like to the point where many productions would keep anywhere from 2-10 extra of them around on set just to be able to hot swap as necessary.

That MYSTERIUM-X image is still damn good even 10 years later.
that was a $35k cam? back then if i remember
@@AI-Consultant $10k for the body on release
Really nice video. Good pace and high quality of information. I‘ll probably never buy a Red, this video was nonetheless helpful.
Why am I watching this? Oh yes, because it’s Caleb. 😍
Thanks!
Thanks, You got my support as usual.
Love seeing your Pentax 110
Still love the RED camera which I used to shoot a musical film called Life of an Actress The Musical. This camera is at a great price now
As soon as these videos go up on quality old gear, the prices shoot through the roof. These go through 7500 Canadian now on eBay, which is a lot for 15 year old tech, no matter how beastly.
Great video, very interesting to see how it holds up!💯
After 3 months of lugging that around, people will be clicking on Caleb thinking he’s doing weight lifting videos cuz he beefed up
😅 *"RED Weight Lifter"* will be his new channel name! Hehe.
The camera model is incredible (min 7:39 in white). I have several 3D printers and would love to have one printed just like it. Could you tell me where you downloaded the file to print the 3D model?
Thanks!
Great Review 👍 It’s very interesting to realize how these monsters went from “unachivable” to “undesirable” to “not a bad option”
that lamp in the back is super cute
also the vintage computer
P.S. A 3D printed part would enable the use of a "after market" Hard Drive, hopefully Red will somehow update the firmware to not limit the video quality when using another brand of drive.
Love this series. More please :)
(and a few other accessories, like another HDD, card reader, Nikon mount and so on)
Pretty amazing a 14 year old camera still keeping up !
Have a Red One Mx kit but can't find any suitable working redrives to use as media, allready sent 3 back. My 16gb red cf cards are limited and a red ssd is still to expensive. Shooting in 2k seems a waste as well. Any other suggestions?
Very informative video. Maybe you can make one about the Sony PMW F5? Prices on this camera are falling like a rock these days.
