mate, for a camera review, I'm really impressed how much personality you were able to show within this video! i found myself audibly saying "FUCK" multiple times when your example shots came up, and giggled when you made a cheeky remark. you have a new subscriber!
Favorite new channel, just cause of his nice humor, it feels authentic. As a fellow german, Im ofc an expert in humor as well, like all germans. We are funny.
The Heisenberg-esque uncertainty of convenience made me laugh out loud. I know a production team that just bought a Epic-x package and he has NO idea what he's in for. He has one 120GB REDmag (and no reader) and likely has no idea how power hungry (or loud) these old DSMC-1 cameras are. Plus the 3+ minute boot time. He just wanted to say he's shooting on RED without thinking that picking up a Komodo (now that it's only $5k) would have saved him so much money in the long run. And that's IF the camera doesn't fail on him a few times during his feature shoot, costing WAY more than he thinks he's saving by picking up this package. I hope he realized that the 120GB REDmag will only get him 20 or so minutes or record time. I hope he can source 3 more. DIT is going to be a nightmare.
I could see it working out, honestly the quality out of these cameras is still insanely good and clients definitely are impressed when you roll up with a big and heavy camera, that's just how it is. Turning up the compression ratio doesn't diminish quality a lot and reduces file sizes significantly, so you can easily get more than 20 minutes on a 128gb mag. If he gets some extra storage and v-mount batteries, or a power supply to plug it into an outlet, and knows how to work around the limitations of the camera you can get some super good footage.
I have rented the Epic camera a few years ago and loved to look. Simply expressed - an awesome camera I shall never forget. Today I spotted an excellent secondhand offer and will seriously think about it 🙂
In regard CCD sensors - I recently started to use my Nikon D40 again just because it's CCD sensor delivers pictures that are massively appealing despite all the shortcoming of the camera and I find the ability to adjust Sigma lens focus fine-tuning among such abilities that brings back the strengths of old gear.
With every new price and every new drawback of the camera you mentioned I was like "This seems like the exact opposite of a good bang for your buck" 😂 I'll be here waiting for the "I went bankrupt by buying hard drives to store my 16bit RAW Footage. Hahaha, I mean price to performance is really good when just looking at the specs, it’s just the practicality that suffers 😂 And the file sizes actually aren’t too crazy when you turn up the compression ratio, you can easily shoot at a ratio of 1 : 16 or so without loosing much quality. I appreciate the kind words!

Hi FUTC, i love all your videos and your humor:D I consider purchasing a Red Camera with th dragon sensor. Do you have any idea how many operating hours is too much/too risky? How many 'Betriebsstunden' had your Cam when you bought it? Greetings from Austria:)
That's really hard to say. Mine had about 1300h when I got it I believe, so not a ton. But tbh I wouldn't put too much value on the operating hours, it depends more on how the camera was used etc. There definitely are cameras that had failures even with low hours, and cameras with high hours that don't have any problems.
Fun fact: With newer Sigma lenses you can micro fine-tune focus sharpness inside the lens with the USB dock so you can get even sharper images just by making micro adjustments. This turns out to be among one of main strengths of the Sigma lenses.
@@futc.photography Lens station is implementation of the same capability by Samyang. Look for Sigma USB dock for-e-mount. I for instance adjust Sigma lenses auto-focus for my Nikon cameras that can't have it done in camera body and later will adjust the lens settings corrected for the specific camera inside the camera. You will definitely benefit in trying fine-tune auto--focus of the Sigma lens for your Red camera.
I have had my Red Epic Dragon since 2015 which was upgraded from the Red Epic. My camera is still running great. I is heavy but that's what the gym is for lol. No really the gym is needed. I do wish they would open up the SSD which is not cool of RED to close it

You don’t have to explain yourself stating that you’re not a feature filmmaker or major production for movies, etc. you can easily film a feature on this camera set up. I don’t know why people think you need $100,000 camera to make a movie you don’t.
Why is this so cheap?? 2.5k for something like this is nothing. Sony A7 IV is more expensive than this. Is it because it's old and no one wants to use it for production and the hobbyists don't want to pay 10k+ for a camera so the seller ends up lowering the price just to get rid of it?
I love how he’s geeking out hard about buying this man it just shows that you have major compassion for it and I feel the same I dream of that red 8k monstro 😅
Great video, I love your honesty and openness and your dry humor is entertaining. I have also recently just bought the exact same camera and have been shooting with Canon on our channels for years. Our main camera that most of our channels videos are made with is the Canon c100 mark ii, and I LOVE IT!! Always have and always will, it’s perfect for us and so incredibly simple to use and get great footage out of!
RED's are getting cheaper, you can buy a DSMC2 kit for $5000 now, ready to shoot, with everything. For a reason though, not too many people want to rent them anymore, so maybe if you do only narrative stuff it's ok. Otherwise a sony FX would be better. But i also like irrational decisions so i bought an Alexa kit for 4000 EUR. :D
Sehr sympathisches Video.
I got to your observations on the impracticality of handholding the Epic. I'll go out on a limb and say this camera is probably better suited for shoulder mounting is you don't want to use a tripod
Yeah that would definitely be a good solution, but that doesn't work for me. I like to film low angles, and I'm also very tall (6'5) so having the camera on my eye level means it's usually on nobody else's eye level 😂
It’s a Fun Camera to have have I would say get Pd-movie for it and some a olpf filter go shoot keep shooting pull stills etc I keep fee CF bodes around also there awesome and is a tank yes you change ssd you will need to use diskdrill app too do your clone to give it and Isobin format
Hey man, I did the exact same terrible financial descision. I got myself a Red epic Mysterium X 5K which is litterally the same camera you use. I loved the video but there is something I cant figure out. I tried plugging in an external display on the HDMI port with no luck, I never got the HDMI out working. Did you had to do something in the settings to enable it?
You can change the output priority, so if you have an original red monitor or EVF plugged in at the same time, with a higher priority set for it, there won't be any output over the HDMI I believe, but if you plugged in the HDMI monitor as the only display and booted the camera you should get a signal. Unfortunately, I've heard that the HDMI connectors on these cameras can be prone to failure, and I'm praying that it doesn't break on mine haha
@futc.photography I tried the priority thing by putting hdmi in first. Unfortunately it does not work even after disconnecting the efv and booting with just hdmi. The thing is, when I unplug the hdmi, the screen detects that I removed it. So it knows something is plugged but cannot get any signal. I think I'm going to try to find a cheap sdi monitor
11:42 these are not propriotery. These sre normal m.2 mini sss drives that look like a laptop bluetooth/wifi card. They're incredibly cheap too. Red lied for YEARS about them. There is nothing prop-blabla about dsmc1/2 reds. Even the redraw files are just JPEG2000 frames wrapped in a zip file with a html header.
Yeah I've followed those developments over the past couple years, with proprietary I meant the firmware lock, it would be great if red were to lift those on these older models. But I'll look into those redcode findings that sounds interesting
"Managing money like a grown up" made me smile, thank you - you aren't alone :)

What is the plate you have put in top of camera? the one you have put on the NATO rail
internal record RAW is RED "INNOVATION"
I love how he’s geeking out hard about buying this man it just shows that you have major compassion for it and I feel the same I dream of that red 8k monstro 😅
You mean (Nikon cinema cameras)
Cough cough
think the brain was 1200 usd on release actually.. i remember considering one.. thanks for the content,, love these
What Lens did you use?
Its called lamans terms..
Man that b-roll of the example for the 5k res was so dope with the sound design as well while he’s pouring the drink
Yeah I’m sold
One day when u can get a komodo, u gotta do a side by side comparisons
Yeah that would be a super cool comparison!
Welcome to RED world.
Looool this comment was a wild ride haha 😂
Sehr sympathisches Video.
I got to your observations on the impracticality of handholding the Epic. I'll go out on a limb and say this camera is probably better suited for shoulder mounting is you don't want to use a tripod
Yeah that would definitely be a good solution, but that doesn't work for me. I like to film low angles, and I'm also very tall (6'5) so having the camera on my eye level means it's usually on nobody else's eye level 😂
wow
I also aspire to owning a RED rather than a Ferrari
Yeah, a RED is much more fun
awesome video man. 18 bit depth is crazy. that's where all the magic is coming from. it was a big deal that lumix had 10 bit a few years ago.
It's 16 bit, but yeah there's a crazy amount of information there
That closing line took the entire video from “good” to “great”.
“What can I tell you? Life’s short. Buy a cinema camera.”
I appreciate it! 😄
So I can get a red scarlet used that is cheaper than a R5C 😂 I love mpb
Yeah pretty much 😂
A company called Jinny Mag makes new Red Ssds
No, unfortunately the shop isn’t live anymore
Hey buddy, which cable do you use for The REDMAG 1.8 to copy to your PC/MAC ? I’m looking for an USB-C cable …
Good choice, am still with my Epic Dragon for longtime !! enjoy it buddy
Very nice!!
Mom's spaghetti made my day LOL
Haha I appreciate it!
talking about the 4k of a7IV like it isn't oversampled from 6k is crazy
No you didn’t.
