    Not to rain on your parade but that was pretty poor footage. Blown highlights and alot of it out of focus. Not a good look for RED...but that's not the cameras fault.

    I still remember when a DP friend of mine bought a Red One in 2009. In addition to the price of the camera and a $20k set of Cooke glass, he ended up having to buy a new Mac Pro because the Dual G5 system basically melted when it came up against 4K...Also, the camera would overheat every 35 minutes or so... to their credit, Red has continued to innovate both hardware and codec side...and those Cooke lenses fit nicely on every subsequent camera he's purchased.

      Incredible story! Thank you for sharing it. LENSES are what matter most as your friend I'm sure has noticed. I never used the RED ONE. I went strait to the Red Scarlet and EPIC MX. It is really amazing how far things have come since then. Have you ever shot on RED?

    • @AndyofCT
      @AndyofCT 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@connormccaskill I shot B cam on few jobs with a Red Scarlet w/ Canon glass for a friend's video production company. Two Red cameras required a 6 man team (we shared the 2nd AC & loader) which was a bit much for industrials and booze promos, but the results were great. The workflow improved even just from like 2013-16 with firmware updates and better NLE support. I haven't played with any of the new Reds yet, but I'd like to get my hands on one and see if I can't melt my iMac crunching some 8K footage.. lol

    Yep, totally agree on your statement.
    It‘s not about If you need it or not.
    It‘s about if you want to afford it for your self. Clients mostly wont see the difference, but you always will.
    I shot on a lot of different cameras trough the years. From the DVX100b to AF100, GH Series, FS700, FS5 and the A7series.
    When I had to make a decision To buy a camera for our company I ended up with a Red Helium. After going through every bits and pieces on competitors.
    Not because it is a Red, but because It ticked all the boxes I ever wish to have in a cinema camera.
    We bought it in 2016 and now after 3 years of use I can say it was worth every penny.
    I had to change a lot in our workflow for on set and post production and think totally different than with smaller dslr style cameras.
    The market is flushed with cameras these days and no matter which one I had, i wasn‘t a 100 percent happy.
    With the Helium sensor I am now. It‘s crazy how good It works and how buttery smooth that R3D RAW codec edits. Even 8k is possible to edit from an XPS15 of a USBC drive in 1/16 resolution. That makes it great to get the dailies done on the way home and finish the edit in the studio with full quality.
    There is no need to spend 50.000 bucks cameras these days but if you want to have that little extra cinematic mojo for your client work, you can rent or even buy an Arri or Red.
    For youtube, vlogging and productions that will be refreshed in a very short period, I‘d always go with a small camera system by the way.
    It‘s so much less hustle and the content you shoot today is old tomorrow anyway so no need to make it bigger than it needs to be.

    I rented a Red just to try it out. And yes - the picture is pretty good, but not that much better. The tiny bit of additional quality costs just a lot of money. And the overall quality of the system was not as good as I expected. And when you look and the prices for accessories .... PAIN! ;)

      Red can have a tiny bit of green to it like any sensor. But it take so little adjustment to kill that of. Especially with ipp2. Prior to ipp2, arri had better roll of. But I dont think thats the case anymore. Its unfortunately a trend in making "Red vs camera X" and they never use ipp2. If all just used the ipp2 workflow we se better videos. Its more water proof.

    I put my Scarlet W in storage for 3 weeks. I took it out to shoot a test, and it wouldn't read the lens .The lens aperture was electronically controlled so this was a problem. I went online and found 3 possible fixes . The first 2 firmware fixes didn't work, so finally I took the lens mount off and cleaned the contacts. It worked - the camera now read the lens. But it was too late in the day to shoot. So I sold the camera. The new owner recently had to put it in for service. I use an URSA Pro now - simple menus, reliable operation, no worries.

  • @hendrikpot7143
    @hendrikpot7143 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This comment is a bit late, but I’d say that people conflate image quality and image flexibility. What makes RED so different than a lot of cameras is how far you can push and manipulate the footage- which is something that cannot really be illustrated by showing side by side shots. A better example would be showing how far you can push the scopes between a Nikon and a RED, or whatever camera you want. I’ve owned many cameras that shoot all the way up to 12 Bit RAW, and I’ve never been able to push the footage as far as I can with RED. So really what you’re paying for isn’t just end product image quality, it’s the flexibility to get any look you want without quality loss. That being said, most people don’t need that kind of flexibility for day to day projects.

    I think what needs to be remembered is in a natural picture profile, the benefit of a red is diminished. But when you need to push and pull in post, that benefit becomes apparent. As well the extra dynamic range (probably 13 stops and not 16.5+), or the high frame rates while still being able to record in a reasonable compression ratio. And let me say that I hate the red ecosystem, and how proprietary it is. Currently we also own two Panasonic Eva1s with atomos recorders. Truth be told prores raw is great, but not as customizable in pre, or post. It doesn’t have resolve support, and I get tired of transcoding to 4444. Blackmagic doesn’t quite have that high end look, or an olpf (big deal for me). It’s also not as renowned. As much as I hate this, truth is most companies ask for a red or Alexa, any other camera and I find myself explaining why this camera is great

    No it’s not worth it. The Pocket 4K and GH5s are the best cameras for under $10.000. After that a C300, Amira or VariCam LT make much more sense depending of you project. They are also more reliable. REDs make great images and that’s all. The Pocket 4K and GH5s also make amazing images and in the end of the day any of these cameras is just a data collecting device and it’s up to you to give the image a look.

      Nikon Z6 with Atomos Ninja V recording ProRes at 10bit in full frame 4k in full log. I don't think that is too bad.

    If you are shooting for youtube you absolutely dont need a Red or Arri, people who watch TH-cam really cant tell the difference, only us pixel peepers see it. A7 iii or a GH5 is more than enough for anything social media or online based. If you are shooting for Netflix or the like then thats a different story. This footage really didnt do that amazing piece of kit any favors but thats not the cameras fault. If you got 20 grand for a camera take a little extra and go shoot something epic.... of course all of this is said through eyes filled with jealousy. lol

    No it is very easy to explain. You paid a lot for the camera and you wallet needs to justify it. I have seen way better videos using all other cameras. Just go on to vimeo and have a look. You might as well have done this on a Blackmagic 4K and it would look better.
