Short answer: it doesn't outright suck, but it feels lacking and rushed, has some baffling development choices (such as running in 50hz), and isn't what most people would expect from a compilation calling itself the "Master Collection".
It's 50hz because you played the EU version. You have to install the American or Japanese language packs for the respective versions that run at 60hz, aka 30hz interlaced

FWIW, For MGS1 you can indeed select the PAL, NTSC and Japanese + Integral versions. Just need to install them from the games DLC menu. They’re free and are counted as additional installs. You’re not limited to PAL.

Should have been released already, if they released the games logically. Mgs3, Peace walker, Gz/5 should have been all packed together. Mg1/2 solid snake, mgs1, 2 and 4 all together after or first.
just buy a good condition ps3 in a world where just a game can cost $100 you're not losing anything by buying a ps3 an the metal gear games. i been seeing them on facebook market place for $50 to $100 i gave $600 for mine when it was new
I don't blame you at all for leaving Metal Gear behind for awhile, because some games just don't hit the same for us after a few years of enjoying them, but it really was great to see you talking about it again; it just takes me back, ya know? I always got a chuckle out of that part of you MGS4 review where you were like: "Can the MGS games please come to Steam? Anyone?", because it seemed like such an obvious decision, and yet this collection is the first time we've finally had the luxury. Better late than never, I guess.

To put it simply... It's a mixed bag of quality, both good and bad. It feels rushed and should've taken longer to develop instead of being rushed and now we have to wait for patches.
@@Vercusgames Explain to me how would Konami try to run an old multiplayer mode that wasn't even included in the HD collection back when it released in 2011 for modern hardware? Because I doubt they think it's a good idea to invest money into making new servers or make a spotty peer-to-peer connection that's going to frustrate players if the mode even runs well to begin with. The mode which nobody will play. That has to be the strangest thing to be disappointed about.

MGS3 is one of the best games of all time, and while I have it on PS2, the framerate performance and fuzzy visuals on an HDTV are atrocious in comparison today. Being able to play it with clarity and awesome load times were well worth buying it. The MGS and MGS2 were icing on the cake for the re-release.

I am playing mgs3 for first time(also new to the series) on ps2 right now. Yeah frames drop sometimes. But also I am almost sure that each time it happens it is intentional. Just like in some movies there are scenes with lower frame rates. Or in animations where sometimes it is better to have lower frame rate, so it looks better. Same thing is happening in mgs3, each time frame rate drops it is on cutscenes, and it looks intentional, and I love it :D
Litterally playing Metal Gear Solid 1 as we speak. BUT I only brought this one for 19.99€ - I already own the HD collection and as Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater haven't changed from those ports, didn't need to buy. Very Happy that they allowed you to buy individually
Actually they've fixed a bunch of bugs from the previous HD release. Like the broken bloom lighting in MGS3, The 3-4 seconds of delay before people start talking in the codec, among other fixes. it really is an upgrade.
Guys, it's Konomi. The fact they let people buy one game out of a collection is a huge step in the right direction for them. Yes $20 seems high, but it's better than having to buy the whole package at least.
I have to mention that at least on Ps4, whenever you pick the reset option in MGS1, sometimes for whatever reason the bilinear filter gets disabled, but yeah, despite the convenience, the older versions (and Ps1 emulated on PC) are better options overall.
@@PikangsFutaba Bilinear is the blurrier version since it interpolates the pixel whereas if it scales with no filter then it would be integer. So in your case you prefer integer since it disables the filter
On Switch, tbe crawling noise in MGS3 when going through grass will keep playing sometimes even after exiting the grass or pausing the game. Still the only bug that I've found that wasn't in the original game.
I cannot stop thinking about MGS4's conversion in Volume 2 (if that's happening). I could be the definitive version with 1080p and 60fps, downloadable camo and songs that you can't get anymore now built into the main game, and an option to restart at the last checkpoint - which would make The Boss Extreme challenge A LOT less time-consuming.

God i am so disappointed with how the MGS1 port specifically was handled. It literally looks like if i blew up my Ps1 copy on an HD TV without proper upscaling and took my glasses off to make it even worse. Also PAL players got completely screwed as the ISO for MGS1 on it is the PAL one which runs around 16% slower than the Japanese and North American versions. Genuinely a baffling decision

I don't think they can. The source code for release versions was reported lost, and I doubt that konami will actually invest recourses to finish the beta (or whatever) version of the code they have. So the only options you have is either hd collection quality, or emulating the original versions / using pc versions of these games, which you can kind of do now.

Overall, I thought this was pretty good. MGS1, 2, and 3 are really good in this, all be it with a few sound issues, and I'm so glad they included the 2D games so I can finally play them. I can't wait to see what's in volume 2.
Companies love using old successful titles as cash cows. The modern era of gaming has little talent, so they keep repeating the same stuff with remakes
Just throwing it out there that the PS5/Xbox Physical Version has all Games on Disc VS. The Switch Version & how MGS2 & MGS3 PS5/Xbox has major improvements for Loadtimes in Menus / Codec / Cutscenes / Going Between Map Areas and is SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER than the previous Metal Gear Solid HD Collection from 2011 with A FEW Visual Fixes to the Visual Bugs from the 2011 Release. With that said though it's a shame the same can't be said about the performance Launch on Steam for PC or The Switch Version however KONAMI did say they're doing Post-Launch Support for The Collection in general and that they are working on "various fixes & improvements" so take that as you will 🤔
On the bright side, the fact this Collection was released on PC gives hope that maybe modders will manage to fix all the shortcomings and issues, besides that I'd love to finally have this games on my Steam collection so I do plan on getting it.... After a price drop and a sale though

Regarding MGS1’s appearance in the collection, Konami actually added new settings now that allow you to turn off the blurring filter in order get a sharper image
I had to buy this. Despite the technogical and audio issues, I want to relive these stories. I never tried the 2011 Bluepoint releases, so now seems as best a time as ever. I really hope Konami can / will patch what they're able to.

For portability, having a hacked PSvita is also great. It has MGS1 and VR mission on it (with speed up, save states and screen filters) and it also has MGS2 and 3, both running at a surprisingly good performance, MGS2 being 60fps (only inside buildings) and MGS3 being pretty stable 30fps from start to finish.

It’s just how it was exactly back in time. Not always a bad thing and this is a true replica. Yeah it can be called lazy but I rather have them focus on the true remaster.
@@amarson2322 No, It's a remaster considering they are just resuing all the the original voicelines from 3, meaning it's the exact same game with new graphics. if it was a remake they would be recording new dialogue etc.
A remake just requires the game engine to be entirely remade from scratch. A remake doesn't need new story elements, new recording, or new music. Those are just added benefits, or detriments, that can come with a remake @@Dreadpirateflappy
As someone that wanted just to be able to play the first bunch of MGS on my series X, it's fantastic. Takes me back to when I was 7 trying to get out of the docks in MGS 😂
If you ever want to play through Snake's Revenge, I'd recommend checking out some of the hacks for it. There's one that automatically chooses the correct keycard, since Snake has to carry a ton of them, much like the first game. And one that even updates some of the sprite art to look like Yoji Shinkawa's art. Of course, save states are your friend with an NES Hard game like that. CDRomance has that version with the quality of life upgrades if you're curious. It's probably the best way to play through it, regardless of it being non-canon, which is a rather lazy reason to avoid touching something. It's like how some people refuse to check out Dragon Ball GT despite it having some great moments.
I'm a bit disappointed to hear that there isn't an option for Twin Snake's controls over the original, but I'm still really happy these games are finally back on a Nintendo Console
The issue with Twin Snakes' controls (which are based on MGS2's controls) is that the game wasn't adequately reworked around them and it makes many portions of the game totally busted. Although the absence of TS is most likely more to do with licensing hurdles.
I didn’t grow up playing the originals, but played parts of 4 and 5 and really loved the story and presentation. I think the Master Collection is a good entry for someone like me. I don’t know what’s missing or isn’t missing. I’ve been enjoying it on the go. Sure, it’s probably not the “best” way to play, but I’m having a good time.
I wanted the pc version, but the fact you have to use an ini file just to change resolution among other issues is ridiculous. I hope they fix the problems and then maybe I'll consider it.
Correction: You could only buy the pc versions of Solid 1, 2, and V and "drm free for years?" Solid 1 and 2 were put on gog only relatively somewhat recently, and 2 was only there for roughly about a year until their license for Russian stock footage expired. And even when that's been sorted out why put it back up when they can charge a "better version" for more?
Correction, mgs2 and 3 does not even run in 1080p, they are still 720p just like hd collection. However, they actually look worse than the 720p in hd collection because lack of MSAA that hd collection used to clean up edges! Digital foundry have confimed this. So you will be playing a worse version of these games than the original hd collection 12 years ago!😆
They need to port/remaster Twin Snakes already. Other than some draconian contract with Silicon Knights / Nintendo (which probably doesn't apply anymore), I don't see whats stopping them. They could even give you a "Remove goofy matrix shenanigans in cutscenes" toggle option (that would require reanimating parts of some cutscenes, could probably be done in like 3 afternoons), and various gameplay options, like a "MGS1 no first person aiming mode", etc.
I’ve never played the metal gear games. I’ve always felt that I missed out. It’s nice at least having the “real” experience. Sure Konami could have done more. They probably will later with Remakes
Much as id like that. Konami hasnt made games in years. They only do pachinko slots and Yugioh. Beyond that dont expect anything else but rare occassional ports of MGS and Castlevania.

The remake of Halo 2 campaign is welcomed and I’m sure introduced a new crowd to the Halo franchise. Remakes have a place man and the Metal Gear Series is definitely ready for em
i appreciate this review immensely but i have to say if you haven’t had a reliable way to play these games in recent years and don’t want to mess with emulators or just don’t have a pc, pick this up. maybe not on switch unless, like J said, portability is your main focus, but $60 is a perfectly reasonable piece for three classic games, the retro ports and all the bonus material like screenplays. if people are willing to continue to buy cyberpunk for $60 and even shell out another $30 for dlc for what was initially a fun but bug ridden mess, i think 60 bucks is well worth for the entire first half of a mostly incredible franchise.
The main problem with the Switch version is that Konami did a complete cheap move. Which is leaving games for download with the physical edition. Normally, it would be understandable, however, the only games in physical format are the MSX and NES one. The first Solid Trilogy! Download only even if the Switch cartridges can at least support one or two of the Solid titles! Jeez.
Exactly. I waited the entire Switch life cycle for MGS to finally be ported over and they pull this. The only way we get MGS physically on the Switch is if someone like Limited Run Games does it and they charge you an arm and a leg..
My only real issue with the master collection is the fact that when I play MGS, I have half a second input delay using a controller. The same issue is present with mouse and keyboard. Any fixes for this?
Its a perfectly ok way to play these games for new players. But it's clear Konami wanted to put in the least amount of effort possible. For hardcore fans I'd just recommend emulation.
I don't have that option, and even if I did, I don't understand anything about those things. And I don't have any of those games anymore. I would love to buy this collection and I'm glad this even became available
@@railasvuo For someone in your case it makes perfect sense to get this. Like I said, it's a fine way to play these games. I just wouldn't recommend it to someone who has the option to emulate or still has one of the old collections.
@@Dante... You are right. I do have an old collection at a summer house 2 hours away, but I don't know where it is because I don't go there very often. Maybe it has been lost over the years. And there should be those versions of subsistence etc. and the original ones. But ps2 doesn't seem to exist anymore. I have to go next summer to see what I can find there or can i find anything

I got it for switch. And honestly I'm stoked. Yea it has a few sound glitches but other than that it's perfect. It runs like it did on PS2 and just the fact I can play it on the go is the absolute best. Not to mention the added bonuses
I was also having the stuck shooting stance problem after the equip/unequip thing on mgs3, I think it’s because this is the first emulation of the games where we haven’t had “pressure sensitive” controls because I also noticed you can’t jab with the survival knife anymore and the controls for holding someone hostage have been revamped, which in my opinion is more helpful than not because you don’t accidentally activate the secret ketchup packets in enemy’s’ throats and it’s easier to interrogate people. It has its pros and cons but all in all, it’s been over 10 years since these games got a re-release I’ve been having a lot of fun revisiting my childhood and teenage years playing the games on next gen having the ability to record clips on console without needing a capture card. It’s worth it in my opinion.
MGS1 in the Master Collection is also the PAL version, so it's running on 50hertz, meaning it's moving in slow motion compared to the superior Japanese and North American versions originally released in the 90s
@@eponymous3784 I believe if you install and select the American English or Japanese language version of the game then it will run the ntsc version. I'm assuming the "language pack" isn't a pack at all and is just the US/JAP image/ROM/whatever container they are using.
From what I understand, you get your region's version installed by default but you can install others as free dlc (but you will for example lose non-english dubs by switching from pal to us version)
@blairfujin i have yet to see anyone default to the US version. Im in the US, and me and 3 of my friends all had it come with the PAL version for europe installed (mine was digital, but one friend's was a physical disc that also came with PAL as default) our only other options in the menu were to download either the North American or Japanese Packs to get the other versions. So yeah, apparently Konami indeed fucked up and defaulted to the slowest version, even in NTSC regions.
I’ve heard this and I have no doubt if you’ve played that version you’d be mad at it but it’s my first time actually playing MGS1 and it seems to run perfectly fine. Granted I play a lot of old games are they originally released since I’m mostly a vanilla and console player, so I’ve never been a snob for increasing resolution or anything like that either
Just finished 1 and one noticeable issue is the audio clipping in the credits. Only part that’s jarring imo. Seems fine otherwise. I know it’s hit or miss but it’s not really a master collection if Twin Snakes is omitted.
I found paying $20 for MGS1 separately the way to go for me. It was the only one I haven’t been able to play in over a decade. It includes VR missions and the NES ports…… MGS2&3 were free on Gamepass/PSNow for years until recently.
the "aiming stance" in mgs is changable with the press of the left stick. this supposedly was done for lack os pressure sensitive buttons, but idk why they couldnt have it just be active on the L1 button.
So far, I have only played through MGS1 in the collection and the only issue I noticed was in the call with the Secretary of Defense at the end of the game, for whatever reason the left side of the audio cut out. It wasn't a hardware issue because the PS5 system audio was working fine.
They put more effort in than I expected but not as much as a lot of people hoped. They could have just had one version of MGS without any features like the borders, ps1 save data for psycho mantis, or the disc changing animation. But they added in all that and gave us the VR missions and Integral version. Still people whine. If you have better ways of emulating the game then just do that. But this is a nice package of games that plays well, at least on consoles. I was hoping for a way to play these games on more recent consoles and now I have it.
They could've done much better, I wish they had. But, my girlfriend who has never played these games has the opportunity to do so without me digging out our PS2. I am having a great time teaching her the art of sneaking.
Not a a fan of how OP avoided mentioning there is a full PC release of MGS1. Which to be fair, should have been the release Konami would use as a base for this re-release of MGS1
Master Collection 1 is okay, not *that* bad but not very good either and since I'm a diehard MGS fan it's nice to finally play the games again after not having consoles anymore and maybe they'll add QoL improvements to the games post launch. What I'm really looking forward to is Master Collection 2. Maybe it'll have MGS4, Peace Walker, Twin Snakes or *maybe* even have Acid because I actually enjoyed Twin Snakes and Acid 2 a lot. Even if they release a third Master Collection including the PSP titles (or maybe even MGO1 and MGO2) I'd buy all of them, they're a nice warm up for the MGS3 Remake and a huge trip down memory and nostalgia lane.

7:50 I will say the audio regarding the speech is actually a partially nice touch considering he only gets louder when you're exiting the hatch, therefore able to hear him easier. However, the audio of walking on certain platforms as well as the Codec Calls Beep is incredibly annoying and noticeable. I highly doubt Konami plans to address these issues either. Guess all we can hope for is the modding community to rise up once again to make this product what it was meant to be now that it's native PC.

Upscaling below HD games is a travesty. mgs1 art style bordered on pixel art and is a valid art style. I played it for the first time this month on duckstation and at first i couldn't get into it because everything looked like a muddy mess. I thought "oh, this is just how this looked back then". Nope, I set it to it's original resolution and it couldn't look better. The textures are muddy on purpose because that's how you create detail when rendering at low resolution. Geez, who would have thought that the artists knew what they were doing with the tech that they had at their disposal?
Great review ^_^ As a longtime MGS fan, I also find the overall package good enough though definitely with some room for improvement. For example: - I'd love the option to change my resolution on PC, or at the very least be able to change from fullscreen to borderless/windowed. I've been following old dog tag walkthoughs for MGS2, and it's a bit of an annoyance when the game minimizes as I go to check something on a web browser. - The option to go back to the launcher, the in-game main menu or to be able to load a save from a pause screen would be a good quality of life fix! I saw online that for the OG HD collection, you could do an R1+L1+R2+L2+Start+Select button combo and instantly go to the main menu from MGS2 or 3, but sadly- at least for MGS2, which is all I've played so far- the option seems to be no longer there. Which for dog tag hunting in particular, especially when I mess up stealthing, makes restarting from my last save a bit of a pain. For all those nitpicks though , it's nice to be able to replay these games in an official capacity without needing to dust off my old Vita. I sadly sold my PS3 back in the day, so to have these games available to me on modern platforms without needing to emulate- especially since it seems likely we'll get MGS4, Peace Walker HD and other MGS titles in an eventual Volume 2- is super exciting to me ^_^

I think it's overall a decent collection. There's definitely better options when it comes to playing these games, but the convenience of having these titles on my ps5 is worth it for me. If you can play these on PC through emulation, or have an old PS3 laying around with the MGS legacy Collection, do it. Otherwise, MGSMC is the convenient option.
I remember me and guys playing through mgs 3 and 4 all the time back in the day. Everyone crowded around the screen, passing the controller trying to out play each other 😁.
If the code on the mgs website and in master collection itself are to be believed, master collection vol 2 is gonna have peacewalker, 4, and 5 definitive. Can't wait to see that.

In my personal opinion the master collection is perfect for new fans that played either Phantom Pain or Revengence. Now I can play the old games without downloading emulators or buying old copies on E-Bay.
I wonder what about Ghost Babel, aka Metal Gear Solid on Game Boy Color. It's a separate game in an alternative timeline set after MGS1, making it kinda non-canon, but they included NES non-canon games, so why don't show Ghost Babel some love? Especially since - contrary to the NES games - this one didn't suck EDIT: You actually mentioned Ghost Babel at 14:38 :D Nice. Look I bought it cause I've been wanting to play the old MGS games forever now and it runs perfectly fine on PS5. Im enjoying MGS1 and cant wait to play 2&3. Im also probably gonna get vol 2 (whenever it releases) so I can play 4, GZ, PP, and Peace Walker as well.
Funny thing about MGS1, they just released an update where you can turn off the Smoothing or change the screen to “Pixel Perfect” (as well as 16:9) along with a screen filter to darken the colors just a little bit like you’re playing on an old TV. So now you can play the Master Collection Ver. of MGS1 the way you like it. Sharp and Pixelated.

Capcom and Digital Eclipse seem to be the only people putting out good compilations. I used to give Sega some praise too for listing 50 Genesis ROMs for $0.50-1.00 each on Steam but then they delisted the Sonic ROMs when Origins came out.
I’m thankful for Metal Gear Solid 3DS, it’s what got me into the series and I used to also play it religiously, I then got a PS3 to play Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 before they were taken down, would love to play MGS4 someday if it ever got the port treatment.
Did you make sure to turn on integer scaling on the Nvidia control panel? Even if a game is integer scaled the GPU may not be set to do the same and some games just default to the GPU setting.

I always interpreted Metal Gear NES as an in-universe movie based on the events of Metal Gear, and Snake’s Revenge being a sequel to the movie, both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Snake and Sean Connery as Big Boss.
I recently got a PS1 and the only place near me that sells retro games has a copy of MGS1. I'd like to get into the series though so if MGS1 has already been slurped up then I'll consider the collection when it goes on sale.
Metal Gear is among my absolute favorite series dating back to even the weird NES titles I rented as a kid (Snake's Revenge being an absolute trip) but I was already considering passing on this collection because I've got multiple copies of pretty much everything it includes. If they do put some of the more obscure stuff on the second volume I'll definitely give it a shot if only to have easier access to the Acid games, which are legit some of my favorite spin offs in any franchise and the reason I keep my PSP in decent working condition.
That skateboarding game was called "Evolution Skateboarding" I used to play the shit out of that game back when I had the working console, but it’s in storage and I still have the disc somewhere. I definitely plan on replaying all of my old console games ESPECIALLY this one
Currently can’t complete MGS2’s VR missions. I keep getting to Raiden’s 5th VR sneaking mission, and it freezes when I try to quit so I can save. It’s almost unplayable.
I know the games will be good. But I knew they'd have problems elsewhere On PC, MGS3 is forced 720p and no Linux/SteamDecc support. And knowing modern gaming, none of that will ever be fixed or patched. Sit like that just never happens. It's up to the modding community to fix games
i know most of you won't care but at least in the trophy hunting community, we are having trouble with MGS3 having buggy/glitched trophies not earning them. Pretty annoying
Why isn't there a scanline filter? All issues a blurry bilenar filter gives is fixed with good scalines Plus MSX Games look too sharp for my liking without a filter. Same for some Mega Drive and SNES games

Short answer: it doesn't outright suck, but it feels lacking and rushed, has some baffling development choices (such as running in 50hz), and isn't what most people would expect from a compilation calling itself the "Master Collection".
It's 50hz because you played the EU version. You have to install the American or Japanese language packs for the respective versions that run at 60hz, aka 30hz interlaced

FWIW, For MGS1 you can indeed select the PAL, NTSC and Japanese + Integral versions. Just need to install them from the games DLC menu. They’re free and are counted as additional installs. You’re not limited to PAL.

Because I doubt they think it's a good idea to invest money into making new servers or make a spotty peer-to-peer connection that's going to frustrate players if the mode even runs well to begin with. The mode which nobody will play.

How is that even possible when its basically just a ROM.
MGS3 is one of the best games of all time, and while I have it on PS2, the framerate performance and fuzzy visuals on an HDTV are atrocious in comparison today. Being able to play it with clarity and awesome load times were well worth buying it. The MGS and MGS2 were icing on the cake for the re-release.

I am playing mgs3 for first time(also new to the series) on ps2 right now.
Yeah frames drop sometimes.
But also I am almost sure that each time it happens it is intentional.
Just like in some movies there are scenes with lower frame rates. Or in animations where sometimes it is better to have lower frame rate, so it looks better.
Same thing is happening in mgs3, each time frame rate drops it is on cutscenes, and it looks intentional, and I love it :D

Litterally playing Metal Gear Solid 1 as we speak. BUT I only brought this one for 19.99€ - I already own the HD collection and as Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater haven't changed from those ports, didn't need to buy. Very Happy that they allowed you to buy individually
20 EUR is too much for mgs1 on its own. price tag would have been justified, if they'd improved it
Actually they've fixed a bunch of bugs from the previous HD release. Like the broken bloom lighting in MGS3, The 3-4 seconds of delay before people start talking in the codec, among other fixes. it really is an upgrade.

Guys, it's Konomi. The fact they let people buy one game out of a collection is a huge step in the right direction for them. Yes $20 seems high, but it's better than having to buy the whole package at least.
I have to mention that at least on Ps4, whenever you pick the reset option in MGS1, sometimes for whatever reason the bilinear filter gets disabled, but yeah, despite the convenience, the older versions (and Ps1 emulated on PC) are better options overall.

@@PikangsFutaba Bilinear is the blurrier version since it interpolates the pixel whereas if it scales with no filter then it would be integer. So in your case you prefer integer since it disables the filter
On Switch, tbe crawling noise in MGS3 when going through grass will keep playing sometimes even after exiting the grass or pausing the game. Still the only bug that I've found that wasn't in the original game.
I cannot stop thinking about MGS4's conversion in Volume 2 (if that's happening). I could be the definitive version with 1080p and 60fps, downloadable camo and songs that you can't get anymore now built into the main game, and an option to restart at the last checkpoint - which would make The Boss Extreme challenge A LOT less time-consuming.

God i am so disappointed with how the MGS1 port specifically was handled. It literally looks like if i blew up my Ps1 copy on an HD TV without proper upscaling and took my glasses off to make it even worse. Also PAL players got completely screwed as the ISO for MGS1 on it is the PAL one which runs around 16% slower than the Japanese and North American versions. Genuinely a baffling decision
As a MGS newbie, I am glad to see that I get the chance to play these games in one go. Hopefully I make a review marathon out of it one day

I don't think they can. The source code for release versions was reported lost, and I doubt that konami will actually invest recourses to finish the beta (or whatever) version of the code they have. So the only options you have is either hd collection quality, or emulating the original versions / using pc versions of these games, which you can kind of do now.
They are going to release something of silent hill soon just wait

Overall, I thought this was pretty good. MGS1, 2, and 3 are really good in this, all be it with a few sound issues, and I'm so glad they included the 2D games so I can finally play them. I can't wait to see what's in volume 2.

Just throwing it out there that the PS5/Xbox Physical Version has all Games on Disc VS. The Switch Version & how MGS2 & MGS3 PS5/Xbox has major improvements for Loadtimes in Menus / Codec / Cutscenes / Going Between Map Areas and is SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER than the previous Metal Gear Solid HD Collection from 2011 with A FEW Visual Fixes to the Visual Bugs from the 2011 Release.
With that said though it's a shame the same can't be said about the performance Launch on Steam for PC or The Switch Version however KONAMI did say they're doing Post-Launch Support for The Collection in general and that they are working on "various fixes & improvements" so take that as you will 🤔
On the bright side, the fact this Collection was released on PC gives hope that maybe modders will manage to fix all the shortcomings and issues, besides that I'd love to finally have this games on my Steam collection so I do plan on getting it.... After a price drop and a sale though

I had to buy this. Despite the technogical and audio issues, I want to relive these stories. I never tried the 2011 Bluepoint releases, so now seems as best a time as ever. I really hope Konami can / will patch what they're able to.

For portability, having a hacked PSvita is also great. It has MGS1 and VR mission on it (with speed up, save states and screen filters) and it also has MGS2 and 3, both running at a surprisingly good performance, MGS2 being 60fps (only inside buildings) and MGS3 being pretty stable 30fps from start to finish.

A remake just requires the game engine to be entirely remade from scratch. A remake doesn't need new story elements, new recording, or new music. Those are just added benefits, or detriments, that can come with a remake @@Dreadpirateflappy
As someone that wanted just to be able to play the first bunch of MGS on my series X, it's fantastic. Takes me back to when I was 7 trying to get out of the docks in MGS 😂
If you ever want to play through Snake's Revenge, I'd recommend checking out some of the hacks for it. There's one that automatically chooses the correct keycard, since Snake has to carry a ton of them, much like the first game. And one that even updates some of the sprite art to look like Yoji Shinkawa's art. Of course, save states are your friend with an NES Hard game like that. CDRomance has that version with the quality of life upgrades if you're curious. It's probably the best way to play through it, regardless of it being non-canon, which is a rather lazy reason to avoid touching something. It's like how some people refuse to check out Dragon Ball GT despite it having some great moments.
I'm a bit disappointed to hear that there isn't an option for Twin Snake's controls over the original, but I'm still really happy these games are finally back on a Nintendo Console

The issue with Twin Snakes' controls (which are based on MGS2's controls) is that the game wasn't adequately reworked around them and it makes many portions of the game totally busted.
Although the absence of TS is most likely more to do with licensing hurdles.
I didn’t grow up playing the originals, but played parts of 4 and 5 and really loved the story and presentation. I think the Master Collection is a good entry for someone like me. I don’t know what’s missing or isn’t missing. I’ve been enjoying it on the go. Sure, it’s probably not the “best” way to play, but I’m having a good time.
I wanted the pc version, but the fact you have to use an ini file just to change resolution among other issues is ridiculous. I hope they fix the problems and then maybe I'll consider it.
For years you could buy the PC version of the Solid games. And without DRM and for half the price.
Correction: You could only buy the pc versions of Solid 1, 2, and V and "drm free for years?" Solid 1 and 2 were put on gog only relatively somewhat recently, and 2 was only there for roughly about a year until their license for Russian stock footage expired. And even when that's been sorted out why put it back up when they can charge a "better version" for more?

However, they actually look worse than the 720p in hd collection because lack of MSAA that hd collection used to clean up edges! Digital foundry have confimed this. So you will be playing a worse version of these games than the original hd collection 12 years ago!😆
I like to think of the NES games as how the Patriots had the events of the MSX games interpreted, and also as a prequel to Snatcher
They need to port/remaster Twin Snakes already. Other than some draconian contract with Silicon Knights / Nintendo (which probably doesn't apply anymore), I don't see whats stopping them.
They could even give you a "Remove goofy matrix shenanigans in cutscenes" toggle option (that would require reanimating parts of some cutscenes, could probably be done in like 3 afternoons), and various gameplay options, like a "MGS1 no first person aiming mode", etc.
I’ve never played the metal gear games. I’ve always felt that I missed out. It’s nice at least having the “real” experience. Sure Konami could have done more. They probably will later with Remakes

Much as id like that. Konami hasnt made games in years. They only do pachinko slots and Yugioh. Beyond that dont expect anything else but rare occassional ports of MGS and Castlevania.

i appreciate this review immensely but i have to say if you haven’t had a reliable way to play these games in recent years and don’t want to mess with emulators or just don’t have a pc, pick this up. maybe not on switch unless, like J said, portability is your main focus, but $60 is a perfectly reasonable piece for three classic games, the retro ports and all the bonus material like screenplays. if people are willing to continue to buy cyberpunk for $60 and even shell out another $30 for dlc for what was initially a fun but bug ridden mess, i think 60 bucks is well worth for the entire first half of a mostly incredible franchise.
The main problem with the Switch version is that Konami did a complete cheap move. Which is leaving games for download with the physical edition. Normally, it would be understandable, however, the only games in physical format are the MSX and NES one. The first Solid Trilogy! Download only even if the Switch cartridges can at least support one or two of the Solid titles! Jeez.
Exactly. I waited the entire Switch life cycle for MGS to finally be ported over and they pull this. The only way we get MGS physically on the Switch is if someone like Limited Run Games does it and they charge you an arm and a leg..
My only real issue with the master collection is the fact that when I play MGS, I have half a second input delay using a controller. The same issue is present with mouse and keyboard. Any fixes for this?
For mgs1 duckstation with enhancement.
For mgs2. ps2 emulator with enchaments.
For mgs3 Ps3 version with pressure sensitive button.

Its a perfectly ok way to play these games for new players. But it's clear Konami wanted to put in the least amount of effort possible. For hardcore fans I'd just recommend emulation.
I don't have that option, and even if I did, I don't understand anything about those things. And I don't have any of those games anymore. I would love to buy this collection and I'm glad this even became available
@@railasvuo For someone in your case it makes perfect sense to get this. Like I said, it's a fine way to play these games. I just wouldn't recommend it to someone who has the option to emulate or still has one of the old collections.
@@Dante... You are right. I do have an old collection at a summer house 2 hours away, but I don't know where it is because I don't go there very often. Maybe it has been lost over the years. And there should be those versions of subsistence etc. and the original ones. But ps2 doesn't seem to exist anymore. I have to go next summer to see what I can find there or can i find anything

I got it for switch. And honestly I'm stoked. Yea it has a few sound glitches but other than that it's perfect. It runs like it did on PS2 and just the fact I can play it on the go is the absolute best. Not to mention the added bonuses
I was also having the stuck shooting stance problem after the equip/unequip thing on mgs3, I think it’s because this is the first emulation of the games where we haven’t had “pressure sensitive” controls because I also noticed you can’t jab with the survival knife anymore and the controls for holding someone hostage have been revamped, which in my opinion is more helpful than not because you don’t accidentally activate the secret ketchup packets in enemy’s’ throats and it’s easier to interrogate people. It has its pros and cons but all in all, it’s been over 10 years since these games got a re-release I’ve been having a lot of fun revisiting my childhood and teenage years playing the games on next gen having the ability to record clips on console without needing a capture card. It’s worth it in my opinion.
MGS1 in the Master Collection is also the PAL version, so it's running on 50hertz, meaning it's moving in slow motion compared to the superior Japanese and North American versions originally released in the 90s
@@eponymous3784 I believe if you install and select the American English or Japanese language version of the game then it will run the ntsc version. I'm assuming the "language pack" isn't a pack at all and is just the US/JAP image/ROM/whatever container they are using.

From what I understand, you get your region's version installed by default but you can install others as free dlc (but you will for example lose non-english dubs by switching from pal to us version)
@blairfujin i have yet to see anyone default to the US version. Im in the US, and me and 3 of my friends all had it come with the PAL version for europe installed (mine was digital, but one friend's was a physical disc that also came with PAL as default) our only other options in the menu were to download either the North American or Japanese Packs to get the other versions. So yeah, apparently Konami indeed fucked up and defaulted to the slowest version, even in NTSC regions.
I’ve heard this and I have no doubt if you’ve played that version you’d be mad at it but it’s my first time actually playing MGS1 and it seems to run perfectly fine.
Granted I play a lot of old games are they originally released since I’m mostly a vanilla and console player, so I’ve never been a snob for increasing resolution or anything like that either
Just finished 1 and one noticeable issue is the audio clipping in the credits. Only part that’s jarring imo. Seems fine otherwise. I know it’s hit or miss but it’s not really a master collection if Twin Snakes is omitted.
I found paying $20 for MGS1 separately the way to go for me. It was the only one I haven’t been able to play in over a decade. It includes VR missions and the NES ports…… MGS2&3 were free on Gamepass/PSNow for years until recently.

the "aiming stance" in mgs is changable with the press of the left stick. this supposedly was done for lack os pressure sensitive buttons, but idk why they couldnt have it just be active on the L1 button.
Because L1 allows you to run with your weapon drawn and letting go snaps your gun to the nearest target. it's invaluable for holdups.

So far, I have only played through MGS1 in the collection and the only issue I noticed was in the call with the Secretary of Defense at the end of the game, for whatever reason the left side of the audio cut out. It wasn't a hardware issue because the PS5 system audio was working fine.
MGS 4 is not included.
I've been playing on Switch and MGS3 has been amazing and super nostalgic for me. Haven't touched the other games yet.
They put more effort in than I expected but not as much as a lot of people hoped. They could have just had one version of MGS without any features like the borders, ps1 save data for psycho mantis, or the disc changing animation. But they added in all that and gave us the VR missions and Integral version. Still people whine. If you have better ways of emulating the game then just do that. But this is a nice package of games that plays well, at least on consoles. I was hoping for a way to play these games on more recent consoles and now I have it.
They could've done much better, I wish they had. But, my girlfriend who has never played these games has the opportunity to do so without me digging out our PS2. I am having a great time teaching her the art of sneaking.
Not a a fan of how OP avoided mentioning there is a full PC release of MGS1. Which to be fair, should have been the release Konami would use as a base for this re-release of MGS1
Master Collection 1 is okay, not *that* bad but not very good either and since I'm a diehard MGS fan it's nice to finally play the games again after not having consoles anymore and maybe they'll add QoL improvements to the games post launch.
What I'm really looking forward to is Master Collection 2. Maybe it'll have MGS4, Peace Walker, Twin Snakes or *maybe* even have Acid because I actually enjoyed Twin Snakes and Acid 2 a lot.
Even if they release a third Master Collection including the PSP titles (or maybe even MGO1 and MGO2) I'd buy all of them, they're a nice warm up for the MGS3 Remake and a huge trip down memory and nostalgia lane.

I will say the audio regarding the speech is actually a partially nice touch considering he only gets louder when you're exiting the hatch, therefore able to hear him easier.
However, the audio of walking on certain platforms as well as the Codec Calls Beep is incredibly annoying and noticeable. I highly doubt Konami plans to address these issues either. Guess all we can hope for is the modding community to rise up once again to make this product what it was meant to be now that it's native PC.

Upscaling below HD games is a travesty. mgs1 art style bordered on pixel art and is a valid art style. I played it for the first time this month on duckstation and at first i couldn't get into it because everything looked like a muddy mess. I thought "oh, this is just how this looked back then". Nope, I set it to it's original resolution and it couldn't look better. The textures are muddy on purpose because that's how you create detail when rendering at low resolution. Geez, who would have thought that the artists knew what they were doing with the tech that they had at their disposal?
"Does it suck? Well," is such a good way to sum up my feelings. Of course I bought it, but of course I also am disappointed they didn't do more
Great review ^_^ As a longtime MGS fan, I also find the overall package good enough though definitely with some room for improvement. For example:
- I'd love the option to change my resolution on PC, or at the very least be able to change from fullscreen to borderless/windowed. I've been following old dog tag walkthoughs for MGS2, and it's a bit of an annoyance when the game minimizes as I go to check something on a web browser.
- The option to go back to the launcher, the in-game main menu or to be able to load a save from a pause screen would be a good quality of life fix! I saw online that for the OG HD collection, you could do an R1+L1+R2+L2+Start+Select button combo and instantly go to the main menu from MGS2 or 3, but sadly- at least for MGS2, which is all I've played so far- the option seems to be no longer there. Which for dog tag hunting in particular, especially when I mess up stealthing, makes restarting from my last save a bit of a pain.
For all those nitpicks though , it's nice to be able to replay these games in an official capacity without needing to dust off my old Vita. I sadly sold my PS3 back in the day, so to have these games available to me on modern platforms without needing to emulate- especially since it seems likely we'll get MGS4, Peace Walker HD and other MGS titles in an eventual Volume 2- is super exciting to me ^_^

I think it's overall a decent collection. There's definitely better options when it comes to playing these games, but the convenience of having these titles on my ps5 is worth it for me. If you can play these on PC through emulation, or have an old PS3 laying around with the MGS legacy Collection, do it. Otherwise, MGSMC is the convenient option.
I remember me and guys playing through mgs 3 and 4 all the time back in the day. Everyone crowded around the screen, passing the controller trying to out play each other 😁.

In my personal opinion the master collection is perfect for new fans that played either Phantom Pain or Revengence. Now I can play the old games without downloading emulators or buying old copies on E-Bay.
In my opinion, yes, on consoles and handhelds, but on PC It can be salvaged with installing mods for a better experience.

I wonder what about Ghost Babel, aka Metal Gear Solid on Game Boy Color. It's a separate game in an alternative timeline set after MGS1, making it kinda non-canon, but they included NES non-canon games, so why don't show Ghost Babel some love? Especially since - contrary to the NES games - this one didn't suck

Look I bought it cause I've been wanting to play the old MGS games forever now and it runs perfectly fine on PS5. Im enjoying MGS1 and cant wait to play 2&3. Im also probably gonna get vol 2 (whenever it releases) so I can play 4, GZ, PP, and Peace Walker as well.
Funny thing about MGS1, they just released an update where you can turn off the Smoothing or change the screen to “Pixel Perfect” (as well as 16:9) along with a screen filter to darken the colors just a little bit like you’re playing on an old TV.
So now you can play the Master Collection Ver. of MGS1 the way you like it. Sharp and Pixelated.
I've played every single metal gear solid game on their respective original console but I just bought this off PlayStation store I'm going to see how it holds up
Capcom and Digital Eclipse seem to be the only people putting out good compilations. I used to give Sega some praise too for listing 50 Genesis ROMs for $0.50-1.00 each on Steam but then they delisted the Sonic ROMs when Origins came out.
I'm just waiting for a re-release of Revengeance. I couldn't really get into the Metal Gear franchise as a whole, but I enjoyed MGR Revengeance.
I’m thankful for Metal Gear Solid 3DS, it’s what got me into the series and I used to also play it religiously, I then got a PS3 to play Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 before they were taken down, would love to play MGS4 someday if it ever got the port treatment.
Did you make sure to turn on integer scaling on the Nvidia control panel? Even if a game is integer scaled the GPU may not be set to do the same and some games just default to the GPU setting.
I want to get it for Steam, but I hear it's broken on Steam Deck.

I always interpreted Metal Gear NES as an in-universe movie based on the events of Metal Gear, and Snake’s Revenge being a sequel to the movie, both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Snake and Sean Connery as Big Boss.

I recently got a PS1 and the only place near me that sells retro games has a copy of MGS1. I'd like to get into the series though so if MGS1 has already been slurped up then I'll consider the collection when it goes on sale.

MGS is one those franchises I have wanted to play since forever. Feels like a good time to jump in.
Metal Gear is among my absolute favorite series dating back to even the weird NES titles I rented as a kid (Snake's Revenge being an absolute trip) but I was already considering passing on this collection because I've got multiple copies of pretty much everything it includes. If they do put some of the more obscure stuff on the second volume I'll definitely give it a shot if only to have easier access to the Acid games, which are legit some of my favorite spin offs in any franchise and the reason I keep my PSP in decent working condition.

That skateboarding game was called "Evolution Skateboarding" I used to play the shit out of that game back when I had the working console, but it’s in storage and I still have the disc somewhere. I definitely plan on replaying all of my old console games ESPECIALLY this one
Currently can’t complete MGS2’s VR missions. I keep getting to Raiden’s 5th VR sneaking mission, and it freezes when I try to quit so I can save. It’s almost unplayable.
It deserved far better support and upscaled graphics option.

On PC, MGS3 is forced 720p and no Linux/SteamDecc support. And knowing modern gaming, none of that will ever be fixed or patched. Sit like that just never happens. It's up to the modding community to fix games
i know most of you won't care but at least in the trophy hunting community, we are having trouble with MGS3 having buggy/glitched trophies not earning them. Pretty annoying
The best way to play MGS1, 2 and 3 on a portable system is still the Vita
Why isn't there a scanline filter? All issues a blurry bilenar filter gives is fixed with good scalines
Plus MSX Games look too sharp for my liking without a filter. Same for some Mega Drive and SNES games
