    Recently, I had a viewer comment and ask about boiling water / not boiling water , and making formula. I wanted to share my response with other parents since it's a good question that often comes up.
    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment and your question.
    Expert organizations such as the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics), CDC (Center for Disease Control), and WHO (World Health organization) disagree with each other over whether water should be boiled or not when making baby formula.
    It's a bit lengthy to explain here, but it has to do with killing harmful bacteria in water, and also in formula. I will leave a link below to a more recent scholarly article from The Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics for anyone who would like to read more.
    pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/143/6/e20182525
    Included in the journal article are links to other sources that also discuss boiling water , and making formula.
    The AAP recommends using a safe source of drinking water , such as bottled water, or boiling water for one minute and allowing it to cool down for up to 30 minutes when making formula
    The WHO recommends that all water be boiled prior to mixing with formula, but they also suggest that if boiled water isn't available that a safe source of water can be used.
    In the end, it's something parents can talk with their pediatrician about, and see what they recommend . Children are different , and their pediatrician might have better insight as to whether a health condition could make them more susceptible to bacteria.
    Thanks for watching !

    Can we take a formula tub like that on the airplane in a diaper bag? I buy the cvs 36 oz tubs

      Hi, thanks for your comment and question. We were able to bring a tub of formula like the one in the video. However, this was years ago and regulations may be different now. The best thing to do would be to call and ask your airline carrier directly if it's allowed and what they recommend. They can explain the security procedures, and what is allowed.

    from most formula brands, it's recommended to boil water and then cool it down to room temperature before mixing it with the powder. So you're saying that it's ok to use just room temperature water without boiling it?

    Why do you put the water in the formula bag? Why not putting the formula in the milk bottle?

    • @mamashomeschool935
      @mamashomeschool935  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi , thank you for watching my video and for your questions. The water and formula can be mixed in a bottle if that's what someone prefers to do, but I put the water and formula in the bag to save space when travelling and to keep things more clean/sterile as possible.
      We estimated that we would need to feed our baby about 5 times over the flight. If you include an extra bottle or two in case of an emergency, like a delay, then that would have been 7 bottles we needed to bring. This way, I can bring 2-3 bottles, 7 sterilized tops/nipples, and the sterilized bags with the formula.
      I hope that makes sense, and please let me know if there are any other questions.

    Where did you bougth your water in the airport or did you bring it in the security?

    • @mamashomeschool935
      @mamashomeschool935  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dana !
      I bought the water at a grocery store and brought it to the airport. However, please make sure that you leave yourself enough time for the security check, because security will check all of the food and liquid that you want to carry on by testing it in a special machine, and this can take a lot of time . If you want to save some time , you could also just buy water inside the airport after going through security. Hope that helps and thanks for the question .

      @mamashomeschool935  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations on your twins, and thanks for the comment. In general, most airlines allow you to bring enough formula and water to feed your baby. In our case, we brought one 1.5L of water and one thermos with hot water. So, because you have twins I think you could bring two bottles of water and two thermoses. I recommend calling and asking the airline you will fly with, and they can tell you exactly how much water is allowed to bring . Enjoy your trip !

    • @mamashomeschool935
      @mamashomeschool935  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Judy K, and thanks for the question . We did not boil the water in the Evian bottles that we brought on the plane with us. If you are using water from the tap/ your sink , then I would highly advise that you boil your water first and then bring it to room temperature to kill any bacteria that may be in the water. This is very important for babies up to 3 months as the Listeria bacteria can be very dangerous. As for bottled water, you could try buying purified water or distilled water. These types of waters have been filtered for bacteria. Evian water is mineralized water, and is safe to use for making formula ( there is a symbol on the bottle that says it is safe for children ). Evian water is filtered naturally through layers of of glacial sand ( the process takes about 15 years according to the Evian.com website ). If you would like to be extra safe, you could also boil the Evian water. I hope this helps you and answers your question ;)

      Bottled water is NOT sterile and you still have to boil it. Also bottled water is high on salt intake so its actually not good for babies

    • @mamashomeschool935
      @mamashomeschool935  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thank you for commenting,
      I wanted to also mention that DISTILLED water is boiled during the purification process, and is sterile.
      It is also true that salt is added to many bottled waters, and it's been noted that too much salt can result in kidney damage to babies. For this reason, bottled water companies will state the salt content and have a label on the bottled water if it is suitable for babies, children, and making formula. Evian bottled water does have a label that says it is suitable for babies. If salt intake is a concern for you and your family, please read the label and ask the company that makes the water.
      Again, if you would like to be safe with regards to bacteria, you can boil the water.

      Hi,
      Thanks for your question, and for watching.
      Here’s the website for Dr. Brown’s. They have a good section all about sterilization.
      www.drbrownsbaby.com/how-to-sterilize-baby-bottles/
      Luckily , it looks like they also have travel friendly microwave sterilization bags available for purchase on their website for 5.99 USD .
      www.drbrownsbaby.com/product/dr-browns-microwave-steam-sterilizer-bags-5-count/
      I would double check with the airline that you will be able to use their microwave ( if they have one ) to sterilize your baby’s items, and again please use safe drinkable water for sterilization ( do NOT use water from the bathroom ) .
      You can also buy the Dr. Brown Sterilization bags from Amazon for 8.99USD . Amazon also sells other brands of sterilization bags like Medela .
      Hope this helps you, and happy travels.

    This is so tedious and complicated to do on a plane. Just buy them baby bottles that come with a milk dispenser inside. Its more space saving and cost effective, not to mention Easy. You dont need to buy plastic bags. Just get 6 9ozBottles and your good for a day.

These weren't available to me in the stores I shopped at, but now I see that Tommee Tippee makes this type of bottle. These types of bottles are also made by Mixie, B.Box, and Fuel baby just in case anyone else is interested, and can be purchased online.

      You can sterilize all the bottle parts with the travel sterilization bag I recommended above from Dr.Brown’s website, BUT you also need to have a microwave and some water in order to use it. So, you would need to call the airline and ask about using the microwave on the flight.
      I like your idea about the Milton sterilization tablets . From the website www.boots.com/Milton-Sterilising-Tablets-40pack-
      Product details
      Milton Sterilising Tablets 40 pack
      Milton sterilising tablets have been expertly developed to sterilise baby items using cold water. The Milton cold water method of sterilising has been used by mums and hospitals for over 70 years and has been specifically formulated to kill 99.9% of germs. Ideal for use at home, travel and overnight stays. The solution is effective for 24 hours and there is no need to rinse baby items bafore they go into baby's mouth. Use to sterilise all breastfeeding equipment and baby feeding accessories: breast pump parts, baby bottles, soothers, teething rings, small plastic toys, plastic cutlery and weaning items.
      How to Use
      Wash all items in clean, warm soapy water or use Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner, then rinse before using the sterilising solution. Drop 1 tablet into 5 litres of clean, cold water. Let the tablet dissolve to form the Sterilising Solution. Pop baby items into the Milton Sterilising Solution and ensure they are completely submerged for a minimum of 15 minutes to become sterilised. Solution is effective for 24 hours.
      Hazards and Cautions
      Keep out of reach of children. Take care not to splash the solution as it will discolour fabrics and clothing. Do not use the solution on metal. Read label before use. Can cause serious eye irritation and may cause respiratory irritation. If medical advice is needed have product container at hand. Use in a well ventilated area. Store locked up and in a dry place. Do not use together with other products.
      Ingredients
      Active ingredient: Troclosene Sodium (CAS: 2893-78-9) 19.5% w/w
      The product details says it’s ideal for travel. So, it could be another option.
