  • After putting 33" (285/70/17r) tires on our 2016 TRD Pro 4Runner, we always had tire rub when turning, even on flat ground. Recently, after sustaining some trail damage, the rubbing got even worse. We spent some time taking off the bumper, diagnosing the issue and fixing the problem. I wish I knew how to do this sooner! Learn from my mistake and fix tire rub today!

    I do these all the time. You move the front of the fender liner forward about 3/4” and trim the valance a little. No need to remove the bumper. I’ll try to remember to make a video next time.

      Nice, mine started rubbing worse due to some trail damage, so I had to remove the bumper to make some modifications.

    Awesome video. I just put 285/70/17 Cooper STT Pro which is a true 33.3 inch tire. I only have a leveling kit on my runner. I pushed back the liner on the driver side which is easy. However the Passenger side is hard due to the windshield fluid reservoir. My tire rubs a little on full reverse lock on passenger side. I may have to heat gun the plastic. Great video.

    on the TRD off-road we fit the same size in Toyo RT's with just a mud flap removal and heat gun and molded the front plastic with no issues. After space lift we had rubbing slightly cause it pulled the tire in a bit more.

    After all these years and 5 generations, why in the world didn't Toyota do these modifications to allow for larger tired. Even if it came with smaller tires, the wheel well and bumper mods could have easily evolved.

      33’s really the biggest you want to go on an IFS. After that the rest of the components get a ton more strain. Think of the extra mass and leverage the braking, tire rods, axles, bushings, etc would need to deal with.

    Off topic question, do you have to do some recalibration when you add bigger tires for the speedometer? I figure it's using wheel revolutions to calculate your speed right? Now that the tire is bigger the math is wrong.

    • @ToTheDirt

      100% need to recalibrate if you want the speedo to be accurate. I haven’t calibrated it so I can plead ignorance 😂

    • @ToTheDirt
      @ToTheDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done a BMC....yet. I ended up doing the high clearance cut and SSO side protection, which would have eliminated the rub issue anyways. I'm looking at going with a bigger lift and tires soon so BMC may be on deck!

    • @andynonymous2164
      @andynonymous2164 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToTheDirt Just order the BMC plates. A few companies make them and they are usually about $25. I was lucky to get my lift done at a place that had a legit fabricator employed. So doing the BMC and welding the plates to make it look like it came that way from the factory was a piece of cake for him.

    You could have saved a lot of time and work by watching/reading the terrabytes of info. available on putting 33s on a T4R. Upon making the 285 decision one should (to avoid any chance of future rubbing under even the deepest wheel stuffing) do the front fender liner trim and re-bolt, hammer the rear of the wheel well back a bit, remove the mud flaps, and, of course, the scary BMC. But the BMC done correctly can look like it came that way stock.

    Hello, fellow TRD owner.. 🤙 question for you, you have a front bumper, a rear bumper and 33s with no lift? FOX stock suspension? I got 33s but I had to get a lift .. I had a little rub when turning. Took the mud flats off and I think I'm good. Lol. But now I'm thinking I could fit 34s.. 🤔

    • @ToTheDirt

      I have a 2016 so it has Bilsteins. I rubbed when turning and at full steering lock in forward and reverse. After this little fix it no longer rubs either way. I don't know about 34s, but I think it's worth a try ;)

    How do you like the supercharger? How much difference does it actually make for driving everyday or when off road?

    • @ToTheDirt
      @ToTheDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the supercharger! I've had it since October of 2017 and it's been the best upgrade to the truck by far. It makes driving more fun, but it's also easier getting on the highway or merging into traffic because the truck actually accelerates. Going up into the mountains, the truck performs better because it can make up for the altitude. And off-road, it's a huge difference with the additional power. I will always recommend supercharging the 5th gen 4runner.

      @@ToTheDirt do you have to use premium gas with the supercharger? Did you install it, or have a shop do it?

    • @ToTheDirt
      @ToTheDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikemeyer1284 yes you have to use high octane (91+) because of the compression. I was one of the first 5th gens to get the supercharger (testing phase) so I had to have a speed shop do the install.
