- In this video, I share my impressions of Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader, a videogame I played for 20 hours. I talk about my thoughts on the game in general, and share some of the more surprising (or not so surprising) revelations about it.

About time 40K had an actual RPG.
Definitely excited for this one. We're finally starting to get more good Warhammer games than bad ones.
It's called *Warhammer 40,000: Darktide*
It also has Jesper Kyd's music in it which makes it a great game.

Good sign that they are willing to show this much already, even if it is a vertical slice. Really looking forward to this, Owlcat's two pathfinder games were a blast to play!
They did this with the pathfinder games as well, although those were kickstarted. Looks fantastic.

Pathfinder Kingmaker was a poorly optimized game with completely absent balance mechanics. The second one had spyware so I don't have an opinion as I don't pay for spyware.

Owlcat is quickly becoming a legend with this franchises. Both pathfinder games were outstanding, and now they're coming for warhammer

One thing I hope they do better is the launch this time around. Kingmaker was a disaster and Wrath was better but too much stuff was broken. To their credit they turned both around and now they're fantastic.

I've always wanted a good story driven RPG in the 40k universe and Owlcat's Pathfinder games are some of my favorite games out there. I am 100% here for this.

I got in the alpha last night. It's pretty fucking dope man. The RP is awesome. From forcing a planet to throw a parade bc you gave them the honor of your presence to a bartender testing how manly you are by giving you moonshine made from expired promethium lol
Thanks for sharing. One thing Owlcat can always be trusted to do is care about the lore of the franchises they work with. And it's showing already here.

She's just a sister of battle. A regular human being wearing scaled down, and limited, power armor.
Also Big E doesn’t really talk to anyone anymore. He just kinda sits there acting like a psychic lighthouse

Whew.... I was livid, it's only a matter of time before they introduce female space marines, and immediately after, the slow death of the franchise, please don't go woke, and thus broke GW, don't break 40k. The new anti human anti emperor narrative is unsettling.

I wouldn't call the Sisters "regular" human beings, but not transhumans like the Space Marines for sure.
Mechanicus OST is the standard bearer for 40k scores, at least to me.

As someone who's played the alpha it looks fucking awesome. & a lot is done, I was super impressed by how far along it is.

I tend to trust Owlcat. They'll do the licence proud. I'm sure they will.
Makes me wonder what other companies out there are waiting to see how this turns out, to throw more IP at Owlcat to develop. :O I'd love to see a StarWars cRPG.

They've got the perfect part of the 40k universe to work their magic. Rogue Trader was the best choice for Owlcat to work towards their strengths.

Couple of lore clarification from a 40k fan
Sister of Battle are not Space Marines, they are a separate branch of the empire tha answers only to the church, while Space Marines are largely independent.
Tech-Priests are not Servitors, a servitor is an automaton, either a reanimated corpse, cloned body or lobotomized person made for brainless menial labour, there is a lot of these on the empire's work force. Tech Priests on the other hand are the ones making them, and are quite higher in the empire's hierarchy than average, they are responsible for the empires technology and have to be ordained in the Church of the Omnissiah (The only other permitted religion in the empire other than worshipping the emperor directly, its complicated), Tech priests also have a separate chain of command inside the empire.
Technically a Servitor is a person who servers or attends. Sadly terrible time to use it I guess.

The Rogue Trader TTRPG is literally my favourite TTRPG I’ve ever played. They chose a great base game to adapt for this CRPG.
One of my most awaited CRPG!
Imagine if Owlcat games could do a remake of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

YES!! I absolutely loved and hated this game growing up. My worst gaming mistake ever was not having multiple saves and saving over my main save after I had died. It let you do that!!
Hmm I believe two of the lead designers Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky both currently work at Obsidian and if the merger with Activision goes through that would mean Microsoft would own the IP. There's a chance something could happen whether remaster, remake or sequel. It would likely be awhile though even if everything lines up right.

Damn this looks gooooood. Just playing Original Sin 2 and this seems to have alot in common. If the battle system is even close as good, this will be a great game. I also love 40k and it has a massive amount of content that works perfectly in a game like this. Power hammers, bolters, rifles, psychic abilities etc. I really rellay hope they polish this, unlike most 40k games in the past.
It was so nice to see a video from you again. I don't know if you've been on hiatus, or if the TH-cam algorithm hasn't been showing me your stuff, but it was awesome to hear from you again.
It was the moment I saw Owlcat say that they were working on translating the rules from Dark Heresy: Rogue Trader rpg by fantasy flight games I knew this was going to be on the path of something meaningful. Can't wait to see how development goes, I hope the best is yet to come.

One of the things I like most about Karak's reviews/previews is the music and audio bits. That's also important to me, and it seems like it's only ever barely mentioned by most others. Thanks for always bringing that stuff up, man!
Also, I'm so happy to hear this is looking decent so far. We're at least a couple decades overdue for a good 40k RPG, so I'm starting to get pretty hyped for this. Now, if we could only get some non-humancentric games in this universe we'd really be cooking!
How cool would a game centered on the Ynnari be? Maybe an ARPG like Iquisitor: Martyr? Or how about a Sniper Elite style game but where you're an Ork Kommando? A Tau mecha game like Armoured Core? The possibilities are endless, but oh no, it's always about the humans! Pfft.
I'm still really excited for Rogue Trader, though, and having a blast with Darktide. I'm just sayin'.

This one is becoming one of my most anticipated upcoming. So cool to see these warhammer worlds come to life like I always wanted them to back in the day.
I have been a HUGE CRPG fanatic since the 90s. So I have been keeping an eager eye on Rogue Trader. Looking forward to playing it. Always thought the WH40K universe would be a perfect to make a CRPG out of.

Agreed, I have been having a grand time with this, love the combat, both ground and space, I'm also looking forward to the character creation to grow as well as ship customization and hopefully being able to get more and new ships
Glad to hear this seems good. Looked like this could be another great 40k game and the Rogue Trader lore is really cool.
For Music it would be such an awesome throwback if they include a track or two from Bolt Thrower in there! If not a full track maybe some of the epic riffs from songs like Warmaster. Nostalgia alone would make it so awesome.

This will be a phenomenal story driven game. I'll definitely pick it up, I'll definitely play it all the way through. I just know that (just like Shadowrun Returns) I'll spend much of it wishing for procedural exploration instead of the grand linear narrative they'll be telling.
This has skyrocketed to the top 5 of my steam wishlist. I have 90 some odd games in there so that's saying something lol. This looks outstanding.
Used to play the pen and paper Rogue Trader. Am so stoked for this
Cautiously excited. Owlcat makes great rpgs but they tend to have weird difficulty spikes and implement mechanics that seem tacked on and, for me, distract from what makes their games good.
EDIT: A year later, the game is out, i have played way too much of it and i can confidently say, if you are not a fan of the 40k setting who needs this now, give it some more time in the oven.
Past Act 3 it just gets buggier and buggier. Some people get lucky, some don't.
All in all it is clear it was released before it was done, not just considering the many bugs but also gameplaywise.
Re: tacked on mechanics, they have now received A LOT of feedback about this so I have to think it will be hugely scaled back

Looks like they've used their own interpretation of FFG's Rogue Trader TTRPG rules (fiddled, I imagine, to avoid the whiff factor a little and changing the career/advancement structure somewhat). Not a surprise considering it's there, and they're familiar doing so off the back of their Pathfinder games.
I'm looking forward to it, though currently only packing a Steam Deck which I would expect to struggle with this. Also not a huuuuuge fan of the art style but it is what it is.
I would be interested in seeing Owlcat do a WHFRP game off the back of this too, though you would really have to dirty it up a bit.

Owlcat has come the closest of any RPG developer to scratching the BioWare itch for me now that the latter's in the shitter. I'm definitely looking forward to this.

Yeah! For me, the big thing is a) the protagonist customization, and b) the sense of adventurous optimism in their games. Obsidian and CD Projekt Red, as much as I love them, tend to have considerably more weighty and philosophical writing- which isn't bad, but sometimes, I'm happy with a more straightforward tale.
imo that's larian but Owlcat has been fantastic too
@@t.t6294 nah larian is very much theyre own thing, Owlcat do the epic stories and adventure stuff way better. Larian makes amazing game systems though, but Wrath made me lose a lot of love for larian with how much better the story was compared to Dos2 and what little weve got from bg3

I mostly never get excited for videogames anymore. I've become extremely jaded over the years but this is starting to win me over.
Having a CRPG in 40k just feels right to me. I love the setting and lore aspects more than the games and tabletop hobby and having something other than a black library novel which is substantial to get my teeth into makes me simultaneously anxious and hyped in equal measure.

Henriex's design looks like Henry Cavill, a real life 40k hero.
Anyone else notice that the main characters have drawn portraits but the enemies seem to have the 3d rendered portraits? It's a minor issue but the juxtaposition really throwing me off. But still, this game looks great. I really like Owlcat and what they did with the pathfinder games and hope this turns out as good as it seems as well.

Awesome, that's a game I'm def waiting, I love WH40k and a sprawling RPG is the thing that was missing on PC.

I didn't even know this game existed until now! All of the Warhammer games I've played (aside from Space Marine) tend to get the atmosphere right but drop the ball on gameplay. It looks like this might be an exception.

I hate in RPGs when the player character or party has access to an armed ship but the ship only fights in cutscenes instead of the player getting to control the ship in battle. I was worried that might happen with this game because until now I haven't seen anything confirming the game would have ship battles.
Looks good. Music is definitely an underappreciated part for a lot of devs so good to see not an issue here. Between ACG and Mandaloregaming, I’ve got a couple of reviewers I can actually trust about 40k games. Not sure what I think about the space combat yet though. Looks a little half baked compared to the rest of the game so far but still early in development so I’ll withhold judgement.

Looks like it carries over a lot of mechanics and design of Mechanicus.
I would've thought it would look more like Pathfinder, but maybe a mix of the two.
It's more like Pathfinder with a cover system. I've only put a few hours in, so I can't say I know it well, but it definitely has that pathfinder feel.

I don't know about the soundtrack; MECHANICUS has a hella wicked OST. Like I own it and listened to it more than I have played the game now. This one in RT is nice, but it doesn't capture me like MECHANICUS did.
