Each Legion has their own traditions. Therefore, saying that each Astartes goes through a mind wipe is not entirely correct but nonetheless, it is a good generalisation. Also, there are various ways to mind wiping. Chemical, cutting parts of the brain, magically~using psychers and/or (multiple bashes to beat the brain out of the skull and then to keep them alive after reformatting the brain functions who are then known as Servitors to humans or as Art pieces and decorations for Dark Elves).
~All Grey Knights would go through mind wiping bcz its in their indoctrination. While Custodes live upto centuries minimum and many times choose to mind wipe themselves voluntarily.
~But Salamanders(SM) are known to avoid it. Some memories are suppressed in cases perhaps but these are outlier cases. They are the most Human of all Legions. SM are known to visit their families & friends and are known to value each human life as precious. They would go to huge lengths to ensure the safety of civilians even before their own lives. This is a key principle in SM traditions as enshrined by their great Primarch Vulcan (who is missing but not dead).
~Dark Angels exclusively mind wipe all aspirants. This is just prelude to the challenges of Caliban (which are derived from the Lion's own struggles in conquering his beloved planet and hunting the Calibaninte megabeasts). Also, almost all DA recruits which fail the challenges get converted into Servitors. This is bcz DA do not trust other humans with their secrets. Most mind wiping is done through chemicals (but given DAs advanced tech, mind wiping machines might just be an option too. Remember nobody truly knows the secrets of DA, not even their own).
~Blood Angels have the blood tradition bcz of their gene seed characteristics. Also, as dictated by the Emperor's Angelic son, Sanguinius himself, all BAngels have to strive for Excellence in Arts, Music, culture so as to avoid the side effects of their genetic mutation. And thus, they usually do not mind wipe themselves in their later years. The recruits which pass are mostly mind wiped to a certain extent usually with a Librarian presideling over the ceremony. They do not lose their personality however, in cases, they might have to learn to read and write again and start just as a toddler would.

A crazy detail is that when our “Hero” is teleported and pukes blood, it IMMEDIATELY starts to clot. This is super lore accurate and is also the reason why when a Space Marine loses a limb he kind of just takes it like someone would a punch and keeps on killing. The other reason why they're blessing their weapons is for the very real existence of sorcery, psychic powers, daemons and magic. All parts of their arms and armor are blessed by Chaplains and Sanctioned Psykers in the belief that it will repel the ruinous powers of such malevolent beings that may make their armory either fail, be ruined or just doesn't work.
So yeah, those automaton psykers that they fought can by all means twist their guns if they choose too - only that they are unable to do so thanks to the little blessings and preparations the Astartes's weapons received. Its a small detail but VERY important in the lore of the setting.

  • @tranquilthoughts7233
    @tranquilthoughts7233 ปีที่แล้ว +3174

You probably should have mentioned that these rebels (or whatever they are) are actually doing a great job at trying to stop the astartes. Yes, they are just getting slaughtered but they do employ the best tactics possible for a regular human to try and actually kill an astartes if you don't have acces to tanks. Try to get him into a kill zone and focus fire him, preferably with heavy weapons or just a shitload of soldiers. And yes, it's totally worth sacrificing the guys that led him into the kill zone because if they didn't fire immedietly the astartes would likely notice the ambush (even through thermal smoke) and either evade or just crush the ambush.
The other viable tactic is to distract the astartes somehow and then get a soldier to do a suicide run to try and attach a very large preferably shaped explosive device to the astartes armor and detonate it immedietly.
These tactics are viable to kill an astartes. And while those seem easy, they absolutly are not. The problem is that astartes don't just have superhuman strength, speed, endurance, reflexes etc and the absolut best equipment that is possible to have, each one of them is also a tactical and strategic genius. And as if that still wasn't enough, all of them underwent a training regime whose warm up exercises would just straightup kill any normal human. Not to mention astartes are pretty much immortal if not killed in battle and as such many have centuries of experience in nothing but combat and war against enemies and creatures that few have ever even just heard of.
If you are a military commander and you are expected to go up against Astartes you should treat them as tanks but with the manoveurability of infantry and the modus operandi of special ops.

You can use intelligent tactics, you can have overwhelming numbers, you can have a home-field advantage, you can have a superior position...the Space Marines will still accomplish their objective, because that is all they live for. Beyond all the genetic enhancement and top-tier equipment, an Astartes, at his core, has been systematically brainwashed and mentally conditioned to regard achieving his goal as the only thing that's important. He doesn't have doubts, he doesn't have a 'girl back home' that he's thinking about, he can't be shocked or traumatized, he isn't afraid to die, he _certainly_ won't blink at killing the enemy...and he's been trained for years to instinctually know the best tactics to use in any given situation.
The true strength of a Space Marine is his resolve and willpower.
There are things that can defeat Space Marines, and regular humans with no artillery or air support? They are not those things.

My theory it is a daemonworld, a world pulled into the Warp from realspace that doesn't follow the material universe's rules any longer. Also, travel through the Warp leads to issues with time as we know it. Seconds could be centuries in realspace and vice versa. Hell, you could go full time-paradox and go back in time before you left upon exiting. An ork warboss did just that and searched for his past self to kill so he could have two of his favorite gun. In the scene where the Astartes are in the warp being held by the Warp Entities tentacles a similar smoky force doesn't so much shoot the Sapphire blue Warp Entity as it does engulf and consume. Stands to reason that if the Inquisitor had lost his body and was now stuck in Warp space that he could as some final act of glorious service save the Marines. Possibly they all only ended up in that vast place because of the Inquisitor. Otherwise they may have been trapped in the Warp. The most devastating thing about the Emperor's Angels of death is not the fact they are 9 feet tall weigh 600-900 pds if pure muscle, not that they have 9 or 12 new organs planted inside of them including two hearts, not that they can fight for months without true sleep (half their brain will sleep while the other half is awake and fully combat effective, not the strength of speed that makes Captain America seem like a child in comparison, he'll it's not even that they can eat inorganic matter to sustain themselves or eat parts of the recently dead to gain their memories, NOT EVEN BEING ABLE TO SPIT ACID. What makes them such a force of nature is in the way these sons of Demigods move as one. That's what this creator got spot on. It is not about the individual, it is all about the unit or team. Personal addition for anyone wondering:
The background story is that humanity spread out through the Galaxy over the course of several thousands of years, then by the 25th millenia, developed psychic powers (leading to possesions that killed entire solar systems) and the AIs we used to make things run went full Skynet. In the 30th millenia, the most powerful human psychic proclaimed himself Emperor of Mankind and made the Astartes as his shock troops to reclaim the galaxy.
To run the show, he made 20 super Astartes called Primarchs, which the 4 Satans stole and spread out through the Galaxy. As the Emperor reclaimed the Galaxy he found 18 of them. When he was close to reconquering the Galaxy, his best Primarch got possesed and, with the help of 8 other Primarchs (many of whom ended up possesed too), started a Civil War that left the Empire in shambles. Eversince then, the Astartes have fought to preserve what remains and most of the stories of the setting happen in the 41st millenia.

For those wondering what the Warp entities are saying:
Inquisitors orb - "Who is there?"
Strike Team orb - "I am here, brother. We have all failed."
Inquisitors orb - "The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal."
Strike Team orb - "Impossible. We'll never survive"
    Inquisitors orb - "You.must.take.them"
    Inquisitor - "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY"
I would like to think that the Inquisitor warning the Chapter Master to recall his men caused his lapse in focus, ultimately giving away his presence to the Warp entities, who had no idea he was eavesdropping, and thus causing him to become possessed.
Another thing to note, we could almost hear the Inquisitor through his helmet warning the Chapter Master, which could imply he was literally screaming at the top of his lungs since they all communicate through internal comms.
I like to think the Inquisitor and the Chapter Master were well acquainted with one another, each fully expecting the other to do fulfil their duty to the very end. That confidence the Inquisitor had to warn the Chapter Master, knowing full well possession was guaranteed, but simultaneously knowing the Chapter Master would not hesitate to “free him” from possession is why I believe the Inquisitor was able to push himself to the limit, disconnect the harness tying him to the Warp entity’s orb and holding it until his soul literally burned away inside of him, until the Chapter Master and his Captain swiftly and mercifully ensured his expiry.
ONE FOR DISCUSSION - @16:55 I like to imagine that the black smoke that seemingly attacked the Warp entity was in fact the soul of the Inquisitor “returning the favour” and giving the surviving Astarte(s) a chance.

13:25 my interpretation of this is that the spikes are a neutralizing agent, meant to weaken the orb so that a bigger team can enter the ship and capture it like the other orb. I believe that the orb panics and reaches out, finding the other orb (thats tied to the psychic) close by and communicates, which is how the psychic intercepted the messages. Following this the other orb says it failed and is captured, so the orb we just found prepares to do the sucking in attack thing, the psychic hears this and tells the captain (or whatever rank) to "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY", and in this moment of broken focus the captured orb attacks the psychic, trying to break the connection and maybe give the other orb a chance. We see the psychic lose the mental battle, essentially lose his mind from possession (its not pretty in 40k), and the 2 higher ranking officials swiftly put him down. I also believe that the tentacles were the orb's power, and the black magic shadow thing that hit it was a final attack from the psychic (it's the same as the power we see from his hands when he looks down), which cuts off the orb and casts the captured Astartes randomly about the cosmos.

    • @zewps9502
      @zewps9502 ปีที่แล้ว +16

also it's my understanding that the humans on board are being controlled by the orb, which is why a) the Astartes have little remorse killing them (possession has non-reversible damage), and b) why they are trying to capture the orb in the first place. To prevent it from capturing further ships or perhaps even fleets.

Pretty good summary in my opinion. The psyker attacking the orb in the warp in a last stand kind of thing didn’t really cross my mind until you and others pointed it out in these comments. Adds a lot of personality and character to him whereas i just saw him as some weird dude just getting taken over by demons. A lot of details in this video that takes multiple viewings to see.

Nice theory , I was guessing blackstone injectors. Unfortunately think the inquisitor psyker was devoured when his face lit up (comparably to how the Emperor feeds) and the black wispy smoke I believe denotes humanoid psyker energy. So, my hope is it was the Emperor that blasted the entity and saved as well as transported his blessed Astartes to his realm in the immaterium with his fractured self(how he became the corpse on the throne wuth that many iterations), because as they say, "and they shall know no fear" and you know most importantly "the Emperor protects".

Syamada Pedersen the creator said these are the actual lines:

'We have all failed. The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal."
    "Impossible, (I) will never survive."
    "You must! Take them!"
    [/edit]
    My own interpretation was:
    - Who's there?
    - I have failed, brother.
    - We have all failed.
    - The astartes defy our touch.
    - We must return. Break your seal.

‘You must’ - break your seal.
‘Take them’ - kidnap the thic bois surrounding you and take ‘em with you.

That makes a lot of sense. With what happens to them after the speech.
These orbs are psychics so they have a deep connection to the warp. My bet is they have a deal with one of the demons, a sort of pact to rise against the astartes.
In the intro the rebels are described as being defeated. So they are being rounded up one by one. This isn't the first incursion, look at how methodically they proceed in the capture.
You look at the spikes they repel the blue psychic aura, my guess is it's a way to restrain them. The captured one has metal bulges like shackles moving around it, disposed in a similar way.
The captured orb senses the other's presence and asks who's there.
The strike orb then tells him the bad news.
Captured ponders about the refusal of the astartes to yield. Then orders his brother to return (to the warp for me).
The strike orb then indicates the impossibility since it's too much of a risk for them (probably because they'll have to face the demon and say they failed, that or the huge dangers lying in the warp. I would go for the latter)
But the captured indicates how desperate they are and that they have no choice.
They must take the offer. (This might be linked to some ultimatum imposed by the demon)
What happens next is the process of going to the warp and the marines are taken along.
Once in the warp the orb creature gets attacked because nobody is your friend in the warp... The enemy of my enemy is... Well who cares in the warp...

My assumption is that the Emperor intervened to break the hold of the warp entity that trapped the marines, dragging at least one of them to a safe place within the warp. The multiple skeletons represent the fragmentation of the Emperor's psyche within the warp, or maybe the only way that a human can perceive the Emperor's presence within the warp.

Additional Explanations for the uninitiated: 7:26 The armor Asatrets wear is a product of approximately 20000 years of development, it's almost the most sophisticated and advanced piece of equipment humanity knows, it's the reason why those half-a-ton things can actually still be stealthy. 8:26 The "seals of purity" as they are called are just one manifestation of how Empire protects itself from the warp. In 40k if enough ppl believe in it it becomes real, regardless if it's even logical. Imperium believes that all this skull-flled gothic architecture and purity seals actually ward off chaos, therefore chaos actually makes it work, therefore empire uses chaos to ward of chaos... More or less. 17:46 His blood instantly coagulating isn't part of him being in Hell, it's actally what's happenming to their blood in real world. Astartes blood is supplied with extra hyper-platelets that cause a near-instant coagulation upon injury. This means you can cut off an Astarte's Hand, cavitate their chests and still they'll be able to fight for some time, they are trained to ignore pain. 17:50 That wasn't overkill of a reaction, Those guys think and process mental stuff and input faster than a regular human does, their senses are improved beyond our scope. it also relates to the secene at 15:22 Those look like trained reflex reactions but they are actually mentally processed decisions.

I’m pretty new to WarHammer, but there’s one thing I’ve noticed that I like a lot. Multiple times you say, “we don’t know for sure.” There could be multiple answers that are all just as possibly correct. It’s an indication of a great sense of mystery and sprawl in this fictional universe. George RR Martin has talked about this being a key aspect of writing fiction. I also think this used to be a big piece in Halo prior to the 343 industries taking over the franchise. Since then much of the mystery in Halo has disappeared and almost everything now has an explanation or is over explained. Leaving the fans with the ability to speculate is a big part in developing a fan culture where people can theorize together. And it doesn’t matter whether or not they are right. It just matters that people are actively thinking and discussing your franchise (in a good way).

I agree. I love that they do this and a few folks really hate it cause they "HAVE TO KNOW" lol. But not knowing is part of the fun. I always tell people when it comes to fanfiction or theorizing about 40k. It's a lot like the goldy locks position of a habitable planet. You don't want to be too close to the sun or too far away. To little liberty with it and it will contradict itself (this is done on purpose by the 40k writers btw.) To far and your not talking about 40k anymore. So know what is relevant to the universe and don't venture too far, and you're good.

Heres my take on that place the space marine found himself in at the end. I think it’s the realm of the emperor. Each chaos god has their own realm of chaos and the emperor stole power from the chaos gods and has likely become a chaos god himself, so it would be fitting that he has his own realm, where the space marine found himself inside. Also, the emperor’s psyche became shattered into a lot of different pieces of himself, so seeing all those skeletons on thrones makes me think that it’s the scattered bits of himself within his realm. He’s known to occasionally reach out and save people like the sisters of battle or influence battles to turn them into victories, it’s not far fetched that he would save one of his Astartes from the warp by bringing him into his own realm.

    Hmm this was good one.
I had heard some good theories of the psykers as for the orbs.
For the psykers the mask and hoods where some kind of psy hoods to help focus their powers and the two being bonded psykers, as they both had upposite hands bound (kinda connected sacrifice). Making the stronger by sharing their power and able to react to each others actions better.
As for the spheres one good theory that those are Yu'wath origins as that was xeno empire on north west portion of the galaxy known of their very powerful psykick powers and heavy warp based technology.

I’m blown away by what TH-cam has done for the 40K fan base, been there since the beginning 87, I was 11. It was just me and my five friends and we, especially I, was just engrossed in it. I took the rouge trader and compendium books with me to high school with me (codex’s weren’t out yet). We didn’t know anybody else who even knew what the hell 40k was, we were closeted nerds. 2nd edition really established the game, and set the ground rules moving forward. But even up through 2010, it felt very niche, but now……WOW, there are so many fans now, most have never even played, they just love the universe. It’s really awesome seeing people fall in love with something that’s been a huge part (and mostly a secret) of my life. Thanks again to the TH-cam community, you’ve made an old fan grateful.

What was frustrating 20 years ago was, I was constantly trying to grow the fan base, and the barrier to entry financially for young “let’s face it, male, teens) was extremely high. As it was for me when I was their age (a box of 10 Terminators in 1990 was $30), a box of 30 marines was $30, guess which one we all got? I purchased every piece of literature produced, game related or novel. None of these kids could do that, so I would hold lore sessions with them, educating them on what was actually happening. Now with TH-cam, they have access to all of that, I think it’s awesome, and am grateful for the new fans. On a side note, the actual hobby has priced themselves out of anyone but the middle aged dad and above. GW should (and is sorta trying to branch out) from the modeling side. The IP is their greatest asset, if they do it right (and they’ve been cautious (which isn’t bad) to answer that. Could be 1980s Star Wars brand value

The two chapters you brought up are the extreme edge cases the Salamanders actively support their members retaining blood relations or even families as they believe it makes them better at protecting the Emperors great works.
While the Space Wolves have a much different belief system around psycho conditioning and especially Librarians that doesn't align with moving away from your roots or tribalism. I think the orb is old Yu'Vath tech used as a portal to the warp. Also why the praying guy ( inquisitor ) got killed is because a possessed psyker can not only kill you and everyone else in your party, but the entire ship, depending on the psykers powers. Demons can use their full potential. If an inquisitor suspects that there may be a possessed person on a planet, they may decide to destroy the entire city och even end all life on the planet just to neutralize the threat. And he doesnt say take the alpha. Its "who is here*

Regarding the 'shot' which seems to hit (destroy?) the tentacled Warp entity:
I've always wondered if the shot is meant to be understood as coming from the plasma pistol, which the lead Astartes managed to get inside the orb before firing. The pistol exploded and destroyed his hand, but may have still fired its plasma into the warpspace, right at the entity in its vulnerable state.
    Regarding the end:
it's definitely not a different galaxy, at least, as 40K lore is clear that the Milky Way's Immaterium is disconnected from any other warpspace which may or may not exist in other galaxies.

Small things that need explanation for newcomers to WH40K and easy to hit. Anyways, as I said, great breakdown of this amazing short. Syama Pedersen (the creator of this short for anyone else reading this who is new) is an amazing animator.

You're a legend mate. Thank you. I'm very lore aware although this vid still got me quite confused & wasn't sure if I'm missing something or is it just opened for interpretation.

To be fair. The original artist that made this made it the way he did so your imagination can fill in allot of the blanks. So i tried to provide a very very basic frame work of the universe its set in for folks. After that its all up to you guys :D.

The white space marine helmets denote Veteran Status and are usually associated with Company Veterans, which would form the Company HQ element in an IRL military. There is also the 1st Company of a Chapter, which is comprised entirely of Veterans. The Space Marine with the white coat and laurels on his helmet is a Captain.
The Iron Cross looking thing is the Crux Terminatus, a sign of Veterancy that allows a Space Marine to wear one of the few coveted Terminator Armours of the chapter, if the mission requires it.
I cant determine if the Marines are part of the 1st or 3rd Company. I guess they are part of the 3rd Company, as the knee pad is one of the places some chapters denote the Company they are part of. The I inside the Crux Terminatus should thus signify the affiliation of those Space Marines with the Holy Inquisition. What throws me for a loop are the white shoulder pauldrons, usually they denote the 1st Company, but they could just denote Elite/HQ status.
So summarize: The Captain is likely the Captain of the 3rd Company and his bodyguard is a Company Veteran with likely hundreds of years of service and countless battles.
The Space Marines have 5 "roles", usually denoted via a symbol on the shoulderpad: HQ, Elite, Troop, Assault and Support

I was going to say something similar, but that depends on this chapter being fully codex-compliant. The tactical symbols on the squad's shoulder-pads says they're not as way out there as the Wolves, but they might be similar to DA or BA, *mostly* compliant, but with differences, such as different veteran markings, or different company markings.

Not exactly in real life. From the platoon onwards military units are led by comissioned officers in most armies, which mostly means you need to attend officer school. Veterancy will generally only allow promotion to non-comissioned officer status, the highest ranked and experienced of which will assist officers in command tasks. So you can have the platoon or company commander have no combat experience, the positioned attained purely by their education as an officer.
This is a bit of a running trope in pop culture - Band of Brothers illustrates this during the Bastogne part, where new West-point grauate commanders are shown struggling to command their troops, and Generation Kill also shows some of this "veterans led by newcomers" friction.

Having just finished "the hunt for voldorius" it occurs to me that the orbs seen are something similar to the prison cell of the bloodtide, and that there is something a whole lot worse inside of it
