Personally I think that we are right now in a golden age of indie retro style games. Infernax, Panzer Paladin, Micro Mages, Shovel Knight, The Messenger... So many good titles out there
I love this game and agree with your assessment 100%! My friend gifted it to me and I'm so happy he did, it's a blast for anyone who played old school games that this emulates.
Bro i never played any old school games beside symphony of night (but i do play a lot of pixels games) and i really enjoyed infernax truly an experience i did the ultimate good ending and now i am doing the ultimate evil just at the final boss rn
Fantastic game. Loved the progression system and the “good vs evil” moral choice impacts. The codes for extra playable characters also made the whole package that much more compelling. An awesome throwback to my youth.
Like Dennaton and Airdorf, Berzerk studios are the guys that give me hope for the medium. Also, the difficulty for me hit that perfect sweet spot of being tough, but you know exactly how you screwed up and once you get it, it's no longer frustrating.
Speaking of replayability, this game has 8 different endings including one that has you play in Contra mode. They also just made the game 2 player co-op giving the 2nd player a whole different move set and abilities. This game is the shit!
Great video. I gave the game a shot before watching. Didn't die for like an hour and a half or so and found myself getting really really sweaty about not dying, then rage-quitting in the first keep when I died. This game is real as fuck bro. Was looking up vids to see how other people felt and you summed up my feelings so far wonderfully.
I just finish finished Super Cyborg ( A tough Contra hommage NES/ SNES era) and I was looking for a challenging game to keep on. I think im at the right place. I had my eyes on it for sometime. Your awesome review helped my make my choice!
Would say super cyborg is a significantly harder game but infernax is worth it just for the branching paths alone. The divergent sections in my evil run had my jaw on the floor the whole time lol
A game that left a mark of pride on me was Towerclimb, by Davioware & Quazi A pixel platformer where your fragile little character can only climb so far before one fatal slip and it's back to the beginning. It could be compared to games like Spelunky, but with less focus about traps, and more about tricky platforming, resource management, and tracking all of your progress on a death log. It is a journey that kicks one gear up after around 20h or less playtime, and reaching the end left me ablaze on my seat.
As an 80’s kid this game was quite possibly the best game I’ve played that has been released for the past few years somewhere between this and the messenger for me. Nostalgia clearly plays a decent part in the appeal but it is as you say just ‘right’ it’s a perfect example of this sort of game
I agree with you - Everytime I died I would notmally in a fit of rage say " i hate this fucking game"....Then proceed to play for another 30 minutes becuase I loved it so much.
I was playing this game when my sister came in and I was on the ultimate evil ending screen and that was her first experience seeing demon boobs god bless her soul and may he have mercy on mine
(I am writing this before i watched the video), there is a dude who you will talk to while he is sitting down, your character says “it is still customary to stand in the presence of your duke”, from there on out whenever you get near him he will stand up If you keep on walking away (making him sit), and then walk at him (making him stand up), over and over faster and faster He will say, “please, duke, my legs! I cant do this many squats” it made me laugh so hard
One of my favorite things about Infernax was all the 8- and 16-bit era game jokes peppered about. The Castlevania joke about hitting a wall and a turkey coming out, and why would anyone ever eat a turkey that came out of a wall, but tally ho, let's forge ahead anyways! Then there's the gratuitous Mortal Kombat death scenes where the bad guy just keeps stabbing or grinding your corpse even though it's obvious you're already dead. The overall air of snarky reverence for the old titles was really well done, in a game that was really well done. Just the game's title: Infernax. It's so 80s 8-bit/arcade that you're sure you had at some point played and beaten that game...except it never existed until 3 years ago. That's an amazing homage.
I really hope the make a Sequel that is a much larger game . Keep everything the same but expand. Bigger map , different enemies, more weapons, and keep the Is Metroidvania aspect.
I think a sequel to this done in the super ghouls n ghosts style would be sweet. Bit more mobility but loads of super cool weapons to try out, I'd play that in a heartbeat.
I had a similar thought lol since they did this in an 8-bit style, it'd be sick if they did a sequel in 16-bit than another sequel in 32-bit pixel style but not too modern, just like with this one
I'm loving this game. Finally got my physical copy from Limited Run! I'm about half way through and thought I'd look up some videos to see what other people think. Same as me lol.
@@nroc6206 Na. I moved on to other stuff when I finished it. I figured I might go back and play through it again some time and try some different story options... but the backlog is so big it demanded I move on for now. Currently playing Parasite Eve on PS1. :)
I am so meek to play this game, but it is such a wonderful masterpiece that I bought the soundtrack instead. It is in my steam library. Glad that I had the option to support the studio anyway. This game inspired me to take action in real life against the chaos that rises in my city. I am an Israeli, and my city is infested with aids for illegal cannabis, nobody did anything, so I want on an painting all these ads white to tell these criminals they should still think twice before they try up in case they still think nobody would care. I care. I was inspired by Infernax so I care... Not that I beat a mascular demon in it's guts... I would not much be able to do that. This game is amazing.
Hello, chap! This game is so good - well, I loved it - here are my penny's worth: multilple endings - lots of weapons - unlockable characters - player choice - brutal at times - the platformer can be tricky - but I enjoyed - and it feels like an awesome NES game. What sorts of games do you like?
For another amazing platform experience, check out my video about what makes Hollow Knight special? th-cam.com/video/ThU-KYdOI4Q/w-d-xo.html
You should review Mindustry. It's a cool game on steam

I agree, check out some footage of Huntdown as well it's a cool and fun one. 🐕
What I really like is that you can choose your moral route in the game, resulting into different scenarios with other characters and or enemies.

just finished the game and i love it
This game is an underrated gem. I played when they first put the demo out and it was like 2 years later I think when the game finally came out lol
One of the best games I've played in a long time! A hidden gem that deserves more love.
Speaking of replayability, this game has 8 different endings including one that has you play in Contra mode. They also just made the game 2 player co-op giving the 2nd player a whole different move set and abilities. This game is the shit!
This game has been my favorite this year by far.
I binge listen the entire ost while at work, its pretty sick
Infernax was my GOTY for 2022. The various endings, the silly and sometimes challenging extra modes... it's amazing. The soundtrack is baller too.

Kid Chameleon my favorite platformer of all time, nice review gonna check this one out.

Funny i finished this and the contra homage brought me back to super cyborg. Doing the same in reverse order lol
Would say super cyborg is a significantly harder game but infernax is worth it just for the branching paths alone. The divergent sections in my evil run had my jaw on the floor the whole time lol
I'm STILL trying to beat the final boss of Super Cyborg on normal difficulty...
@@MarquisLeary34 good luck! I've been grinding this boss for a couple of hours

Great Review. This game really piqued my interest so I snagged a physical copy for the switch. Looks really good & fun 🔥
I agree with you - Everytime I died I would notmally in a fit of rage say " i hate this fucking game"....Then proceed to play for another 30 minutes becuase I loved it so much.
I remember i did all the endings in this game except the redemption ending where you do the good ending with positive karma but evil character.
Same
I love how this game doesn't shit on you for going casual either
Yeah - Agreed - it's a beautiful use of the mechanic that some how made me feel a bit guilty for entertaining going casual. Wonderful game!
too bad, more games should shit on casuals
I always liked how it gives you the option to change difficulty when you die. Like it doesn't force you, but if the game is too hard, you can change.
It's a mix of Zelda 2, Castlevania and Faxanadu. Good sense of humor, fun, plenty of chest codes. Worth the price
I was playing this game when my sister came in and I was on the ultimate evil ending screen and that was her first experience seeing demon boobs god bless her soul and may he have mercy on mine
The game is definitely not for kids
Played the crap outta it over the last week, it's one of my favourite games of all time now
As far as I'm concerned there's no flaws in its design
You should also enter the Konami code in the title screen as well. 😉
One of the gems on Gamepass right now
I have the option of playing it on ps5 or switch but I want it physical. Do I buy the Switch or PS4 version?
Well done! I’m buying it today.

Aw man i missed that lol
They even added an achievement for it, called "One More Rep"
Man, this game is unexpectedly funny sometimes
Great video
Sound track is crazy 🤪

Nintendo switch has all these great games physical also with is amazing to me.

I'm streaming it atm, got it for Christmas, great game so far
I love how retro has made such a comeback. I don't even bother with triple A tbh.
Beat this game. Started on a metroidvania kick. Downloaded Ender Lilies. DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Loved it. Cant wait to play the sequal.
i just seen this on netflix actually lol, it looks pretty cool
Thanks bro, will finnish Blasphemous 2 (last boss now) then this 💪

Brilliance, quality, class.
It kicks ass that’s why, now get in the game and get to the end!
This game was made with ambition
Only critique I have is that it needs a precise jump
thats actually also a strong point man completing those jumps with out a single checkpoint in the dungeon felt aswm

This game shows that you do not make games for a dime.
Wow, I sat on this for almost a year before playing it. Whoops.
It’s a great game! I hope you enjoy it! Let me know what you think
@@RoyMcCoy I got the platinum over my days off. I liked it quite a bit, and with all the extra characters, it's a great deal for twenty dollars.
Definitely a fun Metroidvania
I’ve played the *_SHIT_* outta this game on Netflix (yes; this game is on Netflix!)
Great game !!!
Wow. Was this review written by an AI?
It’s as fun as The Messenger
such a cool game XD

The true example that you do not make good games for a strong buck!
