Welcome to the club! I got obsessed with shmups about 2 and a half years ago and haven't looked back since. Now I'm making TH-cam videos about them lol
I'm on the same boat as you dude. Only a few months ago I saw a video by youtuber Shmup Junkie. The passion and excitement he shows when speaking about shmups was infectious. I gave them a try and I was hooked. I love the pick up and play, arcade feel to them. Edit: Also, do yourself the biggest favor ever and get Crimson Clover World Explosion EX. You welcome in advance.
Great video! I have played most of these shmups.. some very good games mentioned here.. I can also recommend: Drainus, Akai Katana Shin, Steredenn, Black Bird, Squad 51 VS The Flying Saucers...
Steredenn and Drainus are the best. I'm not into Bullet Hell Shmups. The backgrounds look too simplistic and you cannot appreciate the game because you've got to pay exclusive attention to the bullets.
GG Aleste 3 on Aleste Collection is one of my favourites. An original game made by m2 but has that 8 bit aesthetic. Shout out for Sorcer Striker/Mahou Daisakusen, another m2 conversion and a brilliant game, the orchestral arrange soundtrack is incredible, this one is digital only which is criminal.
Gg Aleste is SO good. still probably my favourite M2 st release. Wish we could get pt. 2 wirth Snes and Mega drive titles and a new game. Loved DM as well, very hypnotic.
Thank you mr rabbit! Ive followed you for soooo many years and didnt expect this video from you! It is amazing! Im a bullet hell feind.. mainly did ikaruga on xbox and all the raiden in arcades. I am glad to see so many more! You are amazing and i am looking into some more of these picks! Thank you!
MUSHA on the Switch Sega Genesis stream is what got me hooked on shooters a few years ago. And then I discovered GG Aleste 3 and I've been a big Compile fan ever since.
Love seeing you posting content again my brother! keep this coming! I wish Hitogata Happa was still available on steam. it's a crazy bullet hell shmup! more retro content plzzzz Steam has so many Shmups that are fantastic. There is even a "shmup creator" that looks like you can make some pretty beautiful games!
Great list! The Shmups/STGs that I've been spending the most time with over the last few years are: Star Hunter DX & Devil Engine. They both lack online ranking but have fantastic challenging gameplay. Like Andro Dunos II, as side scrollers, they look and play great in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch.
I appreciate this video, good job. However, some constructive criticism, the volume is inconsistent throughout the video and I found myself going between 18% and 50% volume.
Glad to get some newbie friendly reccs I've loved shmups since the 80s, but remain real bad at them. Never 1CCd, but can make it to level4 in gunbird2 consistently.
for a great game for newer shmup players, check out sorcer striker (aka mahou daisakusen). the first game by raizing, who went on to develop the legendary battle garegga. sorcer striker is the international version, easier than the japanese one. gorgeous pixel art and one of the best game soundtracks ever. you can emulate it in mame or retroarch. iirc there's also a good ps4 port by m2 shottriggers.
Thanks to you, I've added some good shmups to my eShop wish list. I'll be waiting for those to go on sale. Have you heard of Radiant Silvergun? It's on sale for $11.99 in the Nintendo Switch eShop. I hear it's an excellent shmup. It was originally released on the Sega Saturn.
12:02 Sine Mora EX Looks like my kind of shmup. I love story telling and world building in a shmup. Not to mention a time mechanic in which you crash when the time is up is clever. You kind of play offensively or be patient and find opportunities to attack. I saw a gameplay which is good. I am playing Kinja Run though. It did have a story which is subtle and was from Blade of Cats: Run... Kinja Run is more of a runner involving obstacle dodging then a wave shmup that comes in stages and has growth progression involving levelling weapons and heroes. I got screen recordings of it and it looks and feels good so far. Take a look at my channel if you have a chance.
Ya gotta check out crimson clover world explosion on the switch if ya haven't already. The TATE mode on it lets you turn the switch vertically and use the bottom joycon. Not the best way to play it but I appreciate that they gave you the option. but really its just a fantastic cave style shooter made by a top level cave player.
Might as well throw in a reminder of the other CAVE games on modern platforms: DoDonPachi Resurrection (NSW, PC), Akai Katana (PS4, NSW, PC), and Espgaluda 2 (NSW) (the weirdest, and my fave)
Ah, more people falling into this same hole that I've fallen down into lately. You've already got a great selection of good games, I'd recommend a few more: Espgaluda 2 on the consoles, Psyvariar Delta if you like bullet grazing mechanics, Graze Counter GM for an easier time with the same mechanics, and Crimzon Clover World Explosion is just absolutely AMAZING. There's so many great games you can lose yourself into with this genre, just pure distilled fun.
@@AlphaPapa69 strikers difficulty settings are monkey, child ect. Very unrewarding games that push new players away from an already niche genre. Regardless of difficulty settings.
yeah i love arcade old shmups.but now the futire and survival of the genre remains in the indie developers.Igni is a game you should check is a Konami new shooter that is in development for a while
I would recommend the Touhou series if you are looking for "bullet hell" games. Just make sure that the one you're getting is a bullet hell since there are some fighting and deck builder-esque entries in the series.
Just played some Einhander today after work actually. Splendid hori shmup. Quality game, but there are other great horis like Gradius 5, Thunder Force 4, Border Down and a lot more. Not to mention hundreds, if not thousands of great vertical shooters too. So many great games were made in this genre.
Skyforce is indeed a poor shooter. its like one of those free rpg grind fests, but not free and doesn't have the gameplay to make up for it. I wish people wouldn't keep falling for them.
Welcome to the club! I got obsessed with shmups about 2 and a half years ago and haven't looked back since. Now I'm making TH-cam videos about them lol
This is a type of content I would LOVE to see you do more of. Big fan of Retro Slot and DCP as well, thank you for the great video!
Epic collection I also have become obsessed with this genre. Long Live the Shmup!

Shmup Junkie’s awesome
You must try the Dodonpachi & ESPGaluda series, as well as the fantastic Radiant SIlvergun !
And also Blasing Star.

"Welcome to the party pal." We are finally at the dawn of the second shooter renaissance and I am here for it.
Really cool seeing someone get into this genre and waste no time on the filler!
Great video, Briar! Love seeing a notification that you’ve uploaded! As always great pod this week too! Love me some Retro Slot!
Don't forget these. Crimson Clover. Raging Blasters Gunnail. Hazelnut Hex. GigaWing. Gleylancer. Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo. Moon Dancer. and Eschatos. Great Shmups action
What system are each of those for? I'm trying to look up crimson clover and nothing pops up
@@jedimojojojo1603 It's "Crimzon Clover" (with a 'z' not an 's'). All the titles listed are on the Nintendo Switch and Steam.
Switch and Steam
You’re the man Briar! Easily my favorite content creator, love DCP, and your channel, big inspiration 👍🏻🥹
I just received Graze Counter. Horgihugh Mushihimesama. Sophstar Akai Katana all this month with more on the way
I just got Sophstar and Graze Counter. Fun games!
@@darkridearts I picked up Star Gagnat Cosmo Dreamer Like Dreamer and Neko Army this week

Great work Briar! Been following on DCP for some time, cheers man 🤘🏻

Hey briar. Love the vid dude. Hope you do more like this in the future

if you let it... sky force will sink its teeth in you and wont let go. Great game, just has a slow start than your typical shoot em' up.
I appreciate this video, good job. However, some constructive criticism, the volume is inconsistent throughout the video and I found myself going between 18% and 50% volume.
Welcome to the fandom! Cheers! :D
I'm obsessed with shmups too. Subbing :)
Glad to get some newbie friendly reccs I've loved shmups since the 80s, but remain real bad at them.

No mention of the full extent of the jam, despite Dangun Feveron? Missed opportunity, imo.

classic treasure a must play
1 year later, you need DoDonPachi DOJ, Batsugun, Raiden 3 and 4, Toaplan garage releases and Akai Katana.

I recently released two SHUMPS in the Microsoft store. Alien Annihilation & Chopper forces.
Might take a look though I prefer Kinja Run at the moment.
1yr later...I can't find your clears/gameplay of any shooters? Is your gameplay on a different channel? Send a link to them👍
"VERY depressed furries." 😂 Love that game tho.
Great channel, subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Try playing on a crt. Also try a korean style arcade stick with them.
This was so good
Do also get DoDonPachi + DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou (DOJ). Danmaku Unlimited 3 and finally Crimzon Clover as everyone else recommends.
Great video Briar!! But your list was missing a specific game we talked about on SideQuest with a certain shame mechanic 🤔🤔🤣
My bad
better to take shumps on switch or ps4 ? i have both and play only on tv .. there is difference in performance ?

Definitely check out the neo geo shooters Blazing Star, Pulstar, Zed Blade and Strikers 1945. They are great.

Those shmups are relentless Quarter munchers. Far better games to spend your time on. GG

Thank you! Will do!
I never understood the SHMUP abbreviation...
To me a shoot em up is a S.E.U. as in S.E.U.C.K (Shoot Em Up Construction Kit - Old 16bit prog, so SEU)
The most anticipated video of the year!
Sky Force is the favorite shmup of people who don’t really play shmups
I would recommend the Touhou series if you are looking for "bullet hell" games. Just make sure that the one you're getting is a bullet hell since there are some fighting and deck builder-esque entries in the series.
g darius remake upgraded graphics woill make all the rest of games look like a joke
