Thank you for this list. Most of my Switch collection leans heavily toward RPG, metroidvania, horror, and adventure games, but I've recently wanted to start adding more shoot 'em ups and fighting games to my collection because those are genres that I have unfortunately been neglecting on the Switch up to this point. So this list will be of great help in building up my Switch shoot 'em up collection. Death Smiles I & II is a release I've had my eye on recently. While I haven't played the originals, the visuals and theme are right up my alley so I think these games will be must-plays for me. I've also noticed a lot of shoot 'em up collections of older games on Play Asia and I'm curious to check those out as well. Regarding that Cotton and Guardian Force release on the Switch, I haven't played it either though I am also aware of the complaints that people were making about things like input lag in that release. However, I have also seen a lot of praise for that release in a certain way because that release contains a custom Saturn emulator for the Switch and that release became popular in the Switch hacking community because of this because that emulator can be used to run Saturn ISOs on the Switch. A lot of people were happy with how these ISOs ran in the emulator, so it got a reputation for being the best Saturn emulator to use on the Switch. There are some interesting videos on this subject on TH-cam that are probably worth searching for if you find the subject matter interesting.
Some other awesome physical Shmups: Aleste Collection (M2 / Shottriggers, GG Aleste 3 is a masterpiece!) Mushihimesama, published by Limited Run Games, Danmaku unlimited 3, also physical by LRG. And Sol Cresta is also pretty cool, especially the DLC Ships...
Mushihimesama is made by none other then legendary CAVE. There is even Deathsmiles 1 & 2, Akai Katana, Espagluda 1 & 2, Esp Ra De, Ketsui and Deathsmiles 1 & 2 on the system! They should def make a Cave-collection, but won’t probably happen because they could squeeze out a lot of money for just one single release as it is now.
Danmaku unlimited is fantastic. I also like Shinoroubi. You can burn out your eyeballs to the nerves in 5 minutes. The explosions in your retina are still going off hours later.
Great stuff Jim! I've pre-orderd Toaplan shooting garage 3 (zero fire), in case you were not aware, it's out in July. I've got all the games you mentioned, but mostly the PS4 versions. Just need me some Rolling Gunner now. Also, i love Aleste collection from Shottriggers, love me some GG Aleste 3. Great list!! 👍👍👍
Rolling Gunner has some of the most beautiful clouds in the genre I’ve ever seen Check out Neverawake and Drainus. And then I’m also excited for the Dezatopia & Mecha Ritz cart coming out soon and also Graze Counter
I like how andro dunos 2 is a "modern retro non-bullet-hell shmup", That should be a new genre (like the 'modern retro shooters' /'boomer shooters') and it needs a top 10 list
It's like you read my mind, currently in Tokyo and was wondering what shoot em ups were out there for the Switch in JP. I'll look into getting a couple in the next few days, thank you Jim.
I think RAIDEN 4 X MIKADO might be my favorite of the lot! (a very close second is cotton reboot!) also agreed I prefer the original release over the sequel. so many of these I still have to pick up, though. Looking forward to RAIDEN III and one way or the other picking up the raystorm collection and the shottriggers games, though may have to import those. some excellent shmups this episode!
Oh that's an awesome stack of games there. I don't personally do physical releases as digital is significantly cheaper for me, but I almost want to shell out for that japanese Ray'Z Collection, RayForce is an excellent game. Speaking of upcoming releases, I am extremely hyped to see Batsugun Saturn Tribute coming up soon. I'll get it in any way it's available, that's my favorite Toaplan/Proto-Cave game.
Cool vid as always mate🤘🏻Has DoDonPachi DaiOuJou definitely been confirmed by M2 for the Switch? I mean, I hope so, but every time I look in to it I see only PS4 announced🤞🏻 Also, you unlock an extra level (or two?) in Andro Dunos II if you complete the Boss Rush mode.
i have many of these ones...cool games...i also own the saturn tribute by city connection and i dont find it so offensive...ofc the lag is noticeable....guardian force is a very cool shmup and quite playable in there though
Cool input. Rolling Gunner: Overpower is AWESOME. Personally I would have put Crimzon Clover and almost all of the Terarin games in a best shmups on Switch list as up there with any of those.
Let’s face it, most shmups these days are pretty damn good. A list of best modern shmups is way too easy to do but it would be hard to decide which one is the absolute best. As a fan of STGs (same goes for my brother), it makes me very happy.
Great video! I imported ESPrade PSI, but it puzzles me that nobody has licensed it for the West. I hope we can get the Xbox 360 Raider Fighters Aces collection on the Switch! 🤞
Awesome collection of games 👍 I have all these games on switch also and they run perfectly on the system don’t let these crybabies ( the electric underground ) influence you on getting these games. They’re great versions maybe it’s me I’m not that sensitive to input lag
I completely agree. His complaints can be comfortably ignored when it comes to enjoying the games. Radiant silvergun on the Switch runs just as good as the 360 version. I don't notice any difference at all. Same with the other games.
One that really surprised me is Sine Mora EX, horizontal shmup with nice graphics, good story and multi section boss fights. I'm sure in 10/15 years we'll be calling it a hidden gem on the system.
Thanks, really enjoyed this!! I have a question that I’m trying hard to find the answer to, and I’m wondering if you can help… when a game like Rolling Gunner comes out in the arcade, and before it’s had a home release, how do people go about trying to clear it? Like, Do they use notes on their phone or notes in a pad or you don’t see them making any notes, but they’re making notes in their head…? What’s your impression from being on the ground? Thanks! 🙏
Hey, hope you guys are good! Following up to see if I can speak to any of the team about arcade culture (specifically Shmups) in Japan? I’m working on a new angle for Shmups videos for Western players, and would really appreciate speaking to someone on the ground in Japan!
Just got into the switch seeing there is a tine of retro style shmups and beatem ups on it and thata what i really wanna play and 2d plat formers plus nintindo games
Wasn't a fan of andro dunos II at all it has some stupid design choices, bought it on recommendation & i should have used my own judgement. When a boss/enemy has turrets & guns and you shoot them to destroy them the bullets are meant to stop it's basic shmup 101, not in andro dunos II they still keep firing bullets so like what's the point? No idea if it's a bug or they were just programmed that way but it makes playing annoying. For shmup recommendations crimzon clover is pretty much one of the best shooters on the system, it's pure madness with a ton of challenge & modes. Plus it doesn't slow to 5fps like most cave shooters when the screen is flooded with death.
Do not get Akai katana on switch, it has 6 whole frames of input lag, making it literally the worst-performing game in this list in regards to responsiveness, if you really want to play it, get it on pc, also the fact you didn't cover aleste collection and espgaluda 2 is a crime!
I have a PS5 with most of the known "got to have" shmups and was thinking of a Switch but I just can't get past that horrible Dpad for shmups and the flip grip doesn't really help outside of view. And then if you want to just do TV and arcade stick your not getting 4k with the Switch. Also, we don't know if DOJ is actually going to be switch, the demonstration had it comparing from arcade and ps4, it may get the Ketsui and Battle Garegga treatment and not end up on the Switch. Also Rayz Arcade Chronology is getting released through SLG and includes all of them including R-Gear: "The Chronology includes arcade ports of the vertically scrolling shooters, RayForce, RayStorm, RayCrisis and for the first time ever as an official release, the prototype of R-Gear, the cancelled sequel of RayForce"
Look up Nyxi Wizard, it's a gamecube controller that can be taken apart and attached to the switch. There are others available too. You can swap out the mediocre joycons for far better controllers with properly functional dpads.. 4k isn't really an issue on a good TV. Modern tv's have great upscalers built in and to me Mario Kart 8 looks as close to 4k as you can get.
Not only does jim have great taste in games. But has great taste in T-shirts too !! Keep up the great work mad panic gaming !
It'd be awesome if we got some collections of PC Engine shooters on Switch. Especially one that includes Lords of Thunder.
Tyrian, please.
Ich bevorzuge die Sega CD Version von Lords of Thunder. Wegen des Sounds.
Gate of Thunder too!
The next Toaplan Arcade Garage M2 Shot Triggers Release will indeed contain Zero Wing and Hell Fire. It will be released on July 20th in Japan.
I only want Zero Wing if it comes with the PAL MegaDrive version :)
Thank you for this list. Mushihimesama, published by Limited Run Games,

Plenty of shmups this year too. Here is hoping to Compile collection 2 with MUSHA 😁😁😁
Nice stack o' games you got there. Would bet they are still on the shelf years from now, defo gonna pick up that last one based on your review.

Irem just announced shmup collections coming as well. Like 4 or 5 volumes. First edition is out for preorder now I think
Thankf or this vid Jim, been getting back into shooters and this is a perfect jumping on point
Shikondo Soul Eater, hidden gem
Nice to see some shooters in this list that aren't bullet-hell. Non bullet-hell shooters seem to be released few and far between within recent years.
I like how andro dunos 2 is a "modern retro non-bullet-hell shmup", That should be a new genre (like the 'modern retro shooters' /'boomer shooters') and it needs a top 10 list
@@Crcvmbdfl Call them Gen X shooters or better yet, an X shooters. Sounds cooler.
Kinda hoping Mikado do a Raiden Fighters or surprise us with a Viper Phase One port to switch.
It's like you read my mind, currently in Tokyo and was wondering what shoot em ups were out there for the Switch in JP. I'll look into getting a couple in the next few days, thank you Jim.

switch must be the single best shmup console of all time. it's surpassed the saturn, imo.
Oh that's an awesome stack of games there. I don't personally do physical releases as digital is significantly cheaper for me, but I almost want to shell out for that japanese Ray'Z Collection, RayForce is an excellent game.

With a Darius T-Shirt, you didn't put any Darius game in your list? XD
😂....all Jim needs is a pair of coke bottle glasses and he'd look exactly like Hank Hill.

And hey, my brother got Bullet Soul and Shikhondo on the Switch for Christmas. Just thought I’d let y’all know.
I love the shirt but I'm surprised there was no mention of Darius Cozmic Revelation and Cozmic Collection! Those are my most played by far.
Would like to hear your opinion on Sol Cresta !? Nice video Jim!
Great video! I imported ESPrade PSI, but it puzzles me that nobody has licensed it for the West. I hope we can get the Xbox 360 Raider Fighters Aces collection on the Switch! 🤞
Nice reviews keep up the good work !
Great upload Jim
Darius Cozmic Collection and Revelation are amazing Darius collections done by M2.
No dodonpachi or crimzon clover?
Awesome collection of games 👍 I have all these games on switch also and they run perfectly on the system don’t let these crybabies ( the electric underground ) influence you on getting these games. They’re great versions maybe it’s me I’m not that sensitive to input lag
I do like Electric Underground's content, and he has introduced me to a bunch of great games, but damn he can be pedantic at times.
I completely agree. His complaints can be comfortably ignored when it comes to enjoying the games. Radiant silvergun on the Switch runs just as good as the 360 version. I don't notice any difference at all. Same with the other games.

Great video, I play on ps4 but agree with most of your picks, Cave stuff is my favorite but I agree Rolling Gunner rocks.
Switch is king of console shmups all time imo

There’s a genesis game called wings of war that I used to love so much. I wish they came out with either a sequel or rerelease
I thought the M2 Shottriggers version of Dodonpachi Dai Ou jou was only coming to PS4?
Just got into the switch seeing there is a tine of retro style shmups and beatem ups on it and thata what i really wanna play and 2d plat formers plus nintindo games
What’s the best controller for Nintendo switch shmups?
I use a Hori Pro controller, works perfectly.
One day video about your entire Switch physical collection? :P
Switch needs a re-release of Gradius V
I agree!
Rigid force redux is my jam
Don't think I've played that one yet

Hardcore Chocolate, a shop here in Tokyo

I dont see esprade on the switch store
It’s not… physical only. Just ordered mine from Playasia, but you can find it on Amazon or eBay as well. It’s like $50

The Switch is building up a serious collection of shoot 'em ups. Better or worse than the PS4?
About the same. PS4 tends to have better sales than Switch.
The Switch has a very nice list of Shmups. Great video!
Cool
It’s a shame that there was no mention of Azure Reflections, one of the best shmups available on the Switch, PS4, and PC. 😢
