    I have heard everybody and his brother, including the very best doing Bach’s version, many times. Why? I am mesmerized by this one Vivaldi concerto beyond any other musical work. I’ve even listened and watched it performed more often than I have The Rite of Spring. What is incredible to me is that this performance tops them all. Minimal instrumentation, top musicianship and done by disarmingly talented young musicians?! Wow! To say nothing of the work done to make the recording of the magical sounds coming from each instrument blend perfectly. I am in awe.

Amy Lidell Weil is a professional violinist, having earned a Bachelor's degree in violin performance from the Jacobs School of Music at the University of Indiana. Gregorio Lopes is an electrical engineer at Zipline International in San Francisco, having earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering at Stanford University. (Zipline International designs, manufactures, and operates delivery drones.) Nathan Melzer is a professional violinist, having studied with Li Lin and Itzhak Perlman at Juilliard.

    This is so perfect. And those kids! That's who Vivaldi wrote this for! He was the music instructor for a Girls school in ITaly. ''Many of his compositions were written for the all-female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children. Vivaldi had worked as a Catholic priest for 18 months and was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740.'' [Wiki] I think ''abandoned children'' is a 1700's euphemism for unmarried pregnant girls.

    • @dr.atlantis2194
      @dr.atlantis2194 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no. Abandoned children stands for those children abandoned by poorest parents on specific door, actually a window, called "la ruota" (the wheel), made of two bays separated by a wooden wall. When a parent put a baby in the road faced bay, they pull a rope ringing a bell. At the inside, someone turned the wheel a get the baby, exposing the other bay to the road, ready for another child. This kind of wheels were very common in all medieval towns. Venice Republic government gave some money to whom would adopt one of them. To avoid scams (someone could adopt a baby and then abandon they again to get the money), babies were tattooed on a shoulder with the name of the adoptant.
      A variant is that the babies were put on display to anyone would get them. This was called exposition, and is the origin of the very common Italian surname "Esposti".

      I believe that many of the girls in these schools were the children of noblemen and various members of the aristocracy who had brief affairs with chambermaids, etc. Such immorality (amorality?) was commonplace in those days, and numerous children were abandoned to such "homes," which were well supported by the upper classes. They could afford musical instruments, the best teachers, and other things associated with a fine education.

    It's startling how, despite the presence of the piano, this fine performance manages to sound (for the most part, anyway) so satisfyingly appropriate. I think that it must be owing to the fact that the keyboard instrument is outnumbered by so many string instruments...!
