    Fantastic Job Chris, WAY better then I did.. :-) So glad you're putting that card to use. Did you try to get the other one working?
    PS: A note about using these cards in 3D Printers. If you find the card will not communicate or intermittently communicate, you may need to make sure the Printers firmware does not shut power down to the sd card slot when Idle.

      @@ChrisRiley I've had a go with one of these card but it was the more limiting W-02 version (The inability to create the windows shares is frustrating).
      However, I also had problems with Repetier not powering the card correctly and so it would not work at all with my discount controller and RAMPS1.4 combo.
      I found *this* info:
      www.rc-cam.com/forum/index.php?/topic/4058-marlin-reprap-with-toshiba-flashair-wifi-firmware-patch/
      which describes changes to Marlin to get it to work. I don't know if this has been implemented as default on the latest versions of Marlin but I did think to try it on Repetier (I've yet to find time to do that)

    You always have interesting subjects on your channel. I looked into these SD cards several years ago to put in my DaVinci 1.0. After reading about all the steps required I just decided to load/unload the SD manually LOL. Nice step by step though for those that want to use one. One editing suggestion. Zoom in when typing, it’s hard to see on an iPhone screen.

    Nice tutorial. Often times folks will consider printing from the on-board SD card as more reliable than dealing with the GCODE transmission over serial/USB from OctoPrint. Having the WiFiSD card definitely gets you out of the SD card shuffle, but when OctoPrint serial communication is reliable, the extra features from OctoPrint push me to use that every time.

    It's best to define a DHCP area in your router to push your DHCP devices into a block. Got example I set my range from 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.100, then I use 1-10 for network devices like routers and access points and 101-255 is for blocks of fixed ip devices in groups so it's easy to find later like my octoprints are all in the 192.168.1.150-160 range, ip cameras are all in the 200+ range etc. That way I can just assign it a IP in the block for the type of device and never worry about it

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to show the networking stuff a couple of different ways. None of them probably meet best practice by far. I am really just banking on the user not having a very big network most of the time. :) What your explaining makes total since and probably much safer. I could probably do 5+ videos on just this stuff. :) Thanks for the tips.

  • @DevilbyMoonlight
    @DevilbyMoonlight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very interesting I had no idea those cards existed, but anyway heres an 'old timers' tip which may be useful for those instances where its not either possible or desired to install a network scanner or indeed java I prefer to find out whats on a network 'old school fashion' by typing in a small single line looping bit of code from the command line, as I can usually get this done quicker than downloading a canned tool, this is easier in linux but can also be done from a windows command prompt (not powershell) with admin permissions, in such a case I do an 'ipconfig' to see the network address & subnet mask in order to define the limits of a loop, (omitting the network and broadcast addresses and also the default gateway if its at the exact beginning or end of the address range too) then I just run it from the command line followed by an arp table lookup, for a simple example, if the network address is say 192.168.1.0 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 I would use something like this: 'for /l %t in (1,1,254) do ping -n 1 -w 50 192.168.1.%t' then after its finished type in 'arp -a' at the command line to have a list of all connected hosts on that subnet, this technique will work for subnets or subnetted address ranges of 254 hosts or less -

    Great content as usual Chris! couple of issues using an IP scanner to find the address. You do not want to use any IP that is in your Routers DHCP range because it can lead to IP conflicts. Also opening up a cmd prompt on your PC and using ipconfig /all will tell you want your IP range is since it's commonly either 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x but there's other ranges used on some routers as well, just looking at your gateway address will let you know what your current range is easier.
    Generally speaking for this kind of thing, and for most users who aren't well versed in networking basics, it's much easier to just define a DHCP reservation which would be a lot easier overall for people.
    keep up the great work!

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Great tips! I try to show this a bunch of different ways, none really meet network best practices. DHCP reservation is always the easiest for me.

    • @PerMejdal
      @PerMejdal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisRiley DHCP reservation is the best way. Because you manage all your IPs one place, and avoid IP conflicts. But the setup is different from router to router. In this case, you could have skipped assigning a fixed IP, by adding flashaircard as your drive, instead of 192.168.1.40.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome video. It's 2021 already and I just had the same idea of trying to use one of these Wifi SD cards on my Creality Ender v2, I searched TH-cam to see if it had been done already and voila, your video popped up. Unfortunately, it looks like the Toshiba Flashair SD card is no longer available or it's selling on Ebay for $100+. There are other brands like ez Share available on Amazon, but it's doubtful that they would have the WebDAV compatibility that allows you to map a drive to them in Windows. @Chris Riley Coming from a Formlabs Form² 3D Printer with built-in WiFi I was quick to notice the drag that is, on a Prusa i3 MK3S, getting off the PC just to fetch the SD-Card, head back to PC to transfer file to SD-Card, and then heading back to 3D Printer to load and print it so this tutorial was a blessing.
    Question though... For like half an hour I was scratching my head why the fuck I'm able to see the SD-Cards contents in Windows 10 and wirelessly upload a file but the file would then not appear on the 3D Printer BUT would do so when returning on the PC and checking there - By accident I would find out that once wirelessly uploaded to the WiFi Card already installed on the Prusa I'd have to unplug and reinsert it before the Printer would notice a change in the SD-Card - Not the end of the World but it's kinda bothering me xD
    I already changed the Printers SD-Card Settings to [flashAir], mentioned in the conversation with @RJ_Make, though I have no idea what it does and it doesn't help with this "issue".

      I get a lot of questions on these cards. I don't really remember having to reload it, but that might be the case. I have been meaning to test this card again. I will give it a try and see what I come up with.

    wouldn't it be a faster method for printing through octoprint from SD? In my case, i'm always getting connection errors when printing larger files on octoprint - but the octoprint "print from sd" funktion is not for me, because it takes hours for putting files through octoprint to to the SD - would that be a workarount to use one of these?

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that't the problem with octoprint and transferring to SD. It's really slow. With this wifi SD card, you could transfer you gcode over via the wifi card, but still see them and control everything from Octoprint.

    Hey Chris, I had a question... I have a Prusa MK3s with an MMU2s, and the SD card is broken and no longer works. I bought a new SD card, a 64 gb Sandisk, and I need help formatting it. I am on Mac, and whenever I plug it in to my Prusa, if gives me a line of o's and just shows me a back arrow and then says there is no SD card installed. I have read/write lock off, I just need to know how to format it to get the printer to read the files on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dave, it needs to be formatted fat32, but it might be too big. You might try creating a partition on it, like a 16gb one. Sorry, I know nothing about MAC.

      @kraken3d718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisRiley signal strength is good , o double checked all the settings. Card is easily connected via ip address or flashair in the web browser. At first I thought it might have been chrome and an incognito mode issuebut that really didn't seem to affect anything I tried both ways and even opened Microsoft edge if you can believe it! Sometimes if you drag the files over it actually does save it to the card but it's not visible until you unload the car and reloaded which kind of defeats the whole purpose. Firmware up to date on the card as well. I'll keep messing around with it, even did the same thing as a mapped drive but dragging straight from the computer is no issues

      Well the upload works fine while in the printer; but the printer doesn't see the files. I wonder if the issue is the 64GB? The Prusa and my Palette 2 both do not see the card.
      lol: third update- formatted the card to Fat32, the Palette can read the card but the Prusa still can't at 64gb (I assume that is to much for the old Mk2) Upload works fine with the files I linked above, however for the Palette to actually see the files you have to turn the unit off and back on. Maybe this is as good as it will get but seems like there would be an alternative? Any idea what might cause that?
